Thanks for the liner notes - mostly don't understand, but there plain as day, talks about the ritual dance circle, trance, and that it was not confined to just the Lakota.

Dean:

I've shared this before, but I attended six performances of Ghost Trance Music at Yoshi's in 1997. They appeared on Leo.

Probably not in the cards for tonight's tribute, but the box of vocal/choral GTM, Syntax, on New Braxton House is amazing. But each "track" is committed to a disk and lasts ~1 hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm
Jeff Golick:

Hi, Dean! Thanks for that. I haven't worked up the nerve to try the syntactic/vocal stuff yet. So, no, none of that tonight. But some hour-long tunes in store, nevertheless.

I suspect the GTM stuff works even better when experienced live, vs on tape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm
marpay:

HI Dean!!
  8:06pm
Dean:

Hello, Jeff, marpay, and all.

Live was indeed fairly astonishing, especially two shows a night, each a two drink minimum. I could observe Braxton "conducting," but also pairs of musicians choosing at any given moment to engage each other independent of the rest of the group.

Syntax is truly remarkable, in some ways like an Ashley opera, because there are lyrics (or at least words) and the texture of multiple voices exhibits both a sense of integrity, as in a fugue, and of variegated distinct vocal styles.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Jeff Golick:

Braxton is a big fan of the tradition, after all. Around the same time as these early (1.0) GTM recordings, he was also working on his Charlie Parker project, and playing standards on piano in a few groups.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
doctorjazz:

Hi-rez listening in transit since the mic break, cool stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
Jeff Golick:

Hey, @doctorjazz! Here's hoping your family is not riding along...
  8:19pm
Dean:

Even earlier he had those two Steeplechase In the Tradition records and two volumes of Seven Standards on Magenta, a Windham Hill sibling. There's also a more recent Standards box on New Braxton House, absolutely killer. And a Tristano set (among many) on which he tickles the ivories.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 8:20pm
doctorjazz:

Me solo, had to use 3 cars to move one of my girls, bit they'll get to listen a bit more, going out to eat after schlepping, will be back later.
  8:25pm
Dean:

As an aside, I suppose that with Braxton one could make up the most inane shit -- "You really have to hear his record of transcriptions of auctioneers scored for bicycle bells" -- and nobody would think twice.
  8:28pm
Dean:

If I remember correctly one of his c.'96 standards efforts was slammed in Cadence at the time. I have it, and it does come up a bit short.

@Dean, the two horns + bagpipes comping up, comp. 247, lasts an hour, so anything goes.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 8:31pm

He also did bebop/Bird albums, which I have somewhere (I'm not here though...)
  8:31pm
Dean:

Bagpipes, hell, yeah. I had the pleasure of hearing Paul Dunmall go all Hendrix on a crowd with bagpipes.

Really regret not getting the NBH box of the complete Bird recordings. I have the hat 2CD set, but would love to hear the whole mess,

Jeff Golick:

Hey, here's another extremely clear and thorough overview of Braxton's various systems and organizational approaches, by Seth Colter Walls: daily.redbullmusicacademy.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Jeff Golick:

Braxton on the Ghost Dance: “The Ghost Dance music, when it was put together, that came about in a time after the American Indian had been decimated, 98 percent of their culture destroyed... Various tribes came together and compiled whatever information they had left. And the Ghost Dance music was described as a curtain – one side is reality for us, and the other side is the ancestors. And the Ghost Dance music would provide a forum to connect with the ancestors. That had a tremendous impact on me.”
