A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Avatar 8:53pm austinrich:

This week's program is a bit of a "retrocast." But it's never been heard in this form, and never on Sheena's Jungle Room.

The original programs, where the material from tonight's show was taken from, originally aired in 2017:

(Hour 1 of tonight's show is excised from this program.)
Avatar 9:20pm austinrich:

I remember that horridus (of devilsclub) and I had gotten used to doing these live jams on my show (at the time on KMUZ here in Salem, Oregon), and we usually brought in all our own voice samples and what not. For almost a month, these LP was floating around the radio station, and I kept threatening to horridus that I would use it for a show someday. He didn't seem to believe me, so that only made me want to use it more.

Here's the record on discogs:

Mr.Fab, we will call you Doctor Moreau!
πŸπŸ’‰πŸ€“πŸ€˜πŸ—πŸ‘ΉπŸ’€πŸ‘ΎπŸŒ΄πŸŒŠ
Avatar 9:24pm Sonderangebot:

It sounds even more ominous with the background.
Avatar 9:27pm austinrich:

We never called ourselves that, but I can see what you mean about the "ominous" sound. We just liked the idea of tuning in late at night and hearing this on the radio.
Avatar 9:30pm austinrich:

The KMUZ studios are in a building that would have all the AC and other non-essential services turn off at night. However, we would be coming in at 10 PM to do these shows. I remember at least one night, after performing for about two hours straight, where I almost passed out. I was overheating.
Avatar 9:39pm austinrich:

Here are the potential titles for this segment (so far):

It Wasn’t A Pleasant Sound
Down Underground
I Think That Story Might Interest You
Not To Be Conspicuous
That Small, Dull Red Glow
Running Lights On Dark Nights
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Mr Fab:

MKUltravox- the CIA plan to brainwash British new-romantic groups.
Avatar 9:46pm austinrich:

I would listen to that, Mr. Fab. I have a soft spot for Ultravox, as I'm also a Max Headroom obsessive.

That's what I've been doing so far, Mr. Fab.

Avatar 10:05pm austinrich:

Here's some possible titles from this section:

Immediate And Complete Change of Government
They Clearly Wanted A Victory
How That Was Going To Be Done
Prompt And Decisive Action
Avatar 10:06pm Sonderangebot:

Cutting the Umbilical Cord of Victory (I am so tired)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Mr Fab:

"Noisy And Inconclusive" would be a pretty good slogan for WFMU in general.
Avatar 10:07pm austinrich:

I think you're onto something, Sonderangebot. (Do bots get tired?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Aitch:

It's more fun to annex.

I cannot remember offhand. He had what he called these "Blippo" boxes. And later, a full set-up that was HUGE. Let me see if I can find photos of this evening's set-up.

Here you go. Various photos from both of the shows these were made with:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Mr Fab:

Wowee, that's some serious analogue awesomeness.
Avatar 10:41pm austinrich:

There's a lot of backstory behind horridus of devilsclub, but I'm sure they would rather just draw attention to the sounds. It was always fun to jam with them.
Avatar 10:48pm austinrich:

I just checked, and Patrick is still playing guitar, and still making excellent music! You can find their work at:

Avatar 10:49pm austinrich:

I heard that one Legal ID from the previous station accidentally "snuck" through. Hopefully it was entertaining enough that I don't get in trouble with The Powers That Be.
  10:53pm X of X:

Just got here, almost missed the show! Ah yes, I remember MKUltramegaphone. But I am not clear on the difference between MKUltramegaphone and Mini-Mutations.
Avatar 10:54pm austinrich:

Xeres! Well, it's a good thing I'm going long this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Scott67:

Mr.F, TRASH CULT is having a few Gigs in the new year that you would like. We will have to do a Show about them.

But it is perhaps, the end of the beginning.

  11:08pm X of X:

It's Pearl Harbor Day today, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Mr Fab:

hey, X of X! Yeah, that's why Austin's doing this. he is nothing if not timely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Scott67:

Churchill.
Avatar 11:10pm austinrich:

Well, I'm starting to think that this content doesn't even get to Pearl Harbor. I think that might have been what Part III was gonna be, and then never happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Scott67:

Never in the field of human conflict. Has so much been owed by so many, to so few.
Churchill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Mr Fab:

"And you're ugly, but tomorrow I'll be sober!"

Avatar 11:13pm austinrich:

That's a good idea for a show: famous Chruchill sayings (true or attributed).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Aitch:

I thought that was WC Fields Mr Fab?

Yes Fab, Churchill was a wordsmith goldmine.
Yes my dear, I am drunk.
But tomorrow I will be sober.
But you will still be ugly.
Avatar 11:18pm austinrich:

X: when looked for photos of this show for the chat (see link above), I found the photos I took of our "eclipse" show that we did, way back when. Almost when with that, since everyone was excited about the Antartica Eclipse the other day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm Mr Fab:

It wasn't skipping - just say that you looped it.
Avatar 11:18pm austinrich:

Ha! Good call, Mr. Fab. Can you delete the comment above?
Avatar 11:19pm austinrich:

I love when horridus would make his synths sound like water, or glass. So cool.
Avatar 11:22pm austinrich:

I am reminded: 8 September 2017 was one of the "extreme smoke" days in Oregon. It was hard to breath outside this particular day, and I recall hauling in gear that days sucked.
  11:26pm X of X:

You were going to recycle The Eclipse of Xeron? All I remember about that is my niece didn't want credit for her poetry.

  11:33pm X of X:

Aw sucks! Good show, Austin. Thanks!
Avatar 11:34pm austinrich:

It was good to revisit these shows. I haven't heard them in a long time, and I remembered my contributions being sort of dumb. But they weren't bad!
  11:36pm X of X:

Aw shucks, I meant. LOL
