This was kind of an evolution from Split Enz, correct?

Yes, Phillippe...

They were connected. I dig Split Enz, but this album especially is a great leap forward.

Don't know a lot about Joan, but hearing how she ripped off her own sister's material and how competitive and image-promoting she was/is...have left bad impressions.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
Funky16Corners:

She seems like a very intensely self-righteous person in a way that is harder to take the longer it goes on. Humorless, too,

prudy:

did not know that about Joan...sad to hear...her songs recorded in Vietnam while bombs were dropping are haunting...

That all said, watch Don't Look Back some time to watch Dylan be an asshole to her and to Donovan

any time you get into the "agent of change" business as an artist, there's always going to be trouble...

On her website, there's indignant talk of the whitewashing of Jan. 6th, and then we learn she's painted an image of injured and traumatized DC police officer Michael Fanone.

"As part of her effort to keep the truth of that day in the public eye, Joan Baez is releasing this portrait as a limited-edition print.....The edition is available at $350 unframed plus $26 shipping.....A portion of the proceeds will go to The Trauma Research Foundation.⁣"

A portion.

that portion left over from the shipping that only cost $11...

self promotion in service of a cause sounds like

Saying that folk singers had no humour. Phil Ochs could make me smile even at the saddest times.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:33pm

The loss of Phil Ochs was awful.

Larry, even now I get so cross at him even though he had no control of it. One of my heroes.

Yeah, mental illness is a terrible thing in anyone, but when it steals a great artist, even moreso
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm

@TDK60: Somehow it still surprises me how many times you see people with good intentions fall into the "eat their own" mode over minor differences

Surprised that Nick Drake has not been covered more so.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:40pm

Me too. Especially now, that he's better known

I got to see Andy do this a few times. Brilliant.

Franco Twinkie:

I read this: Phil was smitten with Linda Ronstadt(Like everyone else) As if he wasn't there sitting right in front of her, Linda said to a third party in a mocking tone 'Phil want's to go out with me, isn't that hilarious?' Ouch!

You could not give his albums away in the early Seventies.

Discotech Underground:

Drake used a lot of unique and unusual open tunings on his songs so they are not easy to replicate, which might be why there are not more covers of his material.

The world missed the boat on Nick Drake. No matter that he wouldn't/couldn't tour. His music was brilliant and beautiful
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
Funky16Corners:

@Kip - His guitar playing was stunningly original
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
Discotech Underground:

Drake was so painfully shy and reclusive he did no promotion for any of his albums which is why they didn't sell. He only did a handful of live performances, no TV and maybe one appearance on John Peel's radio show and that was pretty much it. Island didn't release any singles from any of the LP's either to give radio something to play.

Kip, small independents like Island & Elektra found some great music that did not always want to be heard by the artists.
