I'd go along with that assessment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
dale:

the unitedd artists two cd set of best of is essential if you like him. there's a 90s remix of this song on that that's pretty great.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Funky16Corners:

The only thing that set omits (other than non-LP 45s) is his live album for UA, but it is otherwise essential

Hello Larry. This fun raiser concentrates the mind.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Brian!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
Brian in UK:

I went to see Gordon at the Royal Albert Hall, my girlfriend, later wife, liked him. I was neutral. I arrived late due to puncture on my motorcycle. He played about one hour. Maybe it was jet lag, who knows. I felt disappointed but his voice is still demanding of attention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
dale:

i wonder if nick drake ever heard this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
StringOFperils:

I'm sure Joe Boyd did.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
Funky16Corners:

@dale - It is definitely in that vein. I wish he'd done a whole album in that style
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
Brian in UK:

dale who knows what Nick Drake heard. He marched to his own drum.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Funky16Corners:

@Brian - There was an article years ago about albums that were in his collection that were known to be favorites of his, one of which was The 5th Dimension's 'Magic Garden'!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
Funky16Corners:

He was also known to be very fond of the English composer Delius
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm

This is the first recording of the song he had a hit with in the 70s
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:58pm

Delius is frightfully English. 'On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring' is worth a listen.
Oh by the way did I say thanks Larry for all you do.

I first heard Sundown on a mix tape while visiting a friend in northern Wisconsin in autumn and we were driving around in the woods, makes me think of the yellow leaved birch trees.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Funky16Corners:

It is a supremely mellow song. One of those AM radio songs from my childhood that I love MORE now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
melinda:

Oddly, the friend who made the tape didn't include artists' names, so I didn't know it was Gord for some time.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
Funky16Corners:

He has such a rich, amazing voice. It's a pleasure to listen to him sing, like Lou Rawls, or Scott Walker (as baritones go)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
