Hi everyone!

I remember downloading photoshop from Napster , it took a day +

365 days first year was 2003.

DirectConnect C++....that was like the dark net...not really a blog per se tho, but there was chat, and it was global
Avatar 🥁 7:12pm tim abdellah:

OMG this is hilarious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Gary:

Hey everyone, what's your earliest music blog memory?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm melinda:

this is good fake beatles
Avatar 7:16pm StringOFperils:

How I used to make that dial-up modem scream...good (lonely) times.
Avatar 🥁 7:23pm tim abdellah:

I need to find a good mp3 of the dialup modem sound. I want to make it my ringtone :)
Avatar 7:24pm StringOFperils:

Nice! Good idea.
Avatar 🥁 7:29pm WR:

There were predecessors to bittorrent, focused on sharing live and OOP recordings of particular bands. Not like the blogs being discussed.

I participated in some Livejournal blogs, I participated in a couple that were Japanese music focused. When? I dunno, pre-2007, after 2000.
Avatar 🥁 7:38pm WR:

Looks like 2002-3 was when I learned of music blogs. I recall I found the 365 day project in March / April of 2003, The LJ based blogs sometime after that.
Avatar 🥁 7:39pm tim abdellah:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Gary:

There were about 10 or so Japanese blogs that I followed early on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Gary:

The next track is from the first cassette that Peter Doolan posted to Monrakplengthai, back in 2008, I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Doug Schulkind:

The great Monrakplengthai blog: monrakplengthai.blogspot.com

A most wonderful place to be!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Webhamster Henry:

Doug's Mining the Audio Motherload was exhausting in its scope. I wonder how many of those links still work?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Gary:

Henry! It would be decidedly worth combing it to find out :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Webhamster Henry:

The whole blog is full of great material still!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Doug Schulkind:

@Webhamster Henry
It was exhausting to produce. I usually did my writing for those posts 1-3am. I just couldn't sustain it. I bet fewer than 10% of the download links are still active.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:03pm chresti:

That blog has Meesak Nakarat
Avatar 🥁 8:04pm WR:

I did not consistently visit the blogs I knew, many of which disappeared 2008 - 2010. I did not know of any the great "world music" blogs until recently (thank you WFMU) or I would have likely been more attentive.

That's right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Gary:

It's incredible
Avatar 8:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

We desperately need to wrest the Interwebz from Monopolies. But if I discover a Station - I want its stream address to put on a playlist in iTunes. That also has my EQ settings for every pair of speakers in my trap... If I discover a Podcast - I try & Subscribe - & get it delivered automatically - thru iTunes... If I wanna communicate ...crapdammit ...Evil Zuckerland is where the most people are. Blogs are a bit more like the Decentralized promise it was all supposed to be - but getting my attention there @ the right times would be the hard part...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Moroccan Tape Stash is overflowing with devastating music like this. Plus incredible notes, translations, and links to other sites for additional info. A massive resource! And maybe the greatest place to go for all the Najat Aatabou you could ever possibly desire.

Yes - So much of Najat's catalog is unavailable internationally, I really wanted people (outside of Morocco) to know how amazing she is. So was happy to share those tapes.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm chresti:

Did you tell Richard Hell about your show, Gary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Gary:

Najat! -- Chresti, I did not

Regarding blog music sharing, what about sensitivity regarding the music of active musicians.
  9:03pm Marie:

Loving the show--thanks Gary and all!
Avatar 🥁 9:04pm tim abdellah:

@WR - yeah, it's a good question. Some folks who used to blog are now more active producing and putting out music from places/people they earlier blogged about. Sahel Sounds, Awesome Tapes From Africa, Snap Crackle Pop (now active at Hive Mind Records)
Avatar 🥁 9:06pm tim abdellah:

Also Haji Maji and Excavated Shellac
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm Ike:

Just tuned in and missed whatever you said about the Burmese Food Fest in Queens. I try to go to that when I can -- years and years ago, it used to be just once a year in the back yard of a church in Briarwood! I've never gone to Briarwood for *anything* else!

  9:22pm jacob:

What would be truly awesome, would be if y'all could link to every blog you mentioned that's still online in the show notes. I'm here furiously googling and in most cases coming up empty handed...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Doug Schulkind:

I actually bought this Ramata Diakité record in a store, like a respectable citizen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Gary:

Jacob! I should have added those links in when I was creating the playlist. I'll tell you what, I'll go back to this after -- this weekend if I have a chance -- and do just that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Gary:

Okay, I'm trying to add a few of them now ...
  9:26pm peter:

WR - yeah, many of the musicians whose music i've shared are still performing, and in speaking with several them they've told me that as regards their old recordings, they got paid once and maybe a second time when their song hit, but never saw anything past that, so they had no qualms with it circulating in this way (i even had a. tinnakorn attapaiboon in for a guest post!).. i've spoken with a couple of labels who own the rights to my posts, as well, and they had said with their limited plans to market outside of thailand, they had no problem with it either.. i think it's probably a different story sharing newly released music that artists are still hoping to earn money from, but i haven't gotten involved with that.. i know that Sahel Sounds have a model (for their WhatsApp series at least) where i believe basically all the earnings go straight to the artists.. but they're a real live label now, so
Avatar 🥁 9:26pm tim abdellah:

Ooh - where did you get that, Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Doug Schulkind:

@tim abdellah
At a small record stall in the shadow of the Sacré Cœur in Paris.
