RIP Don Joyce who sat on a stage in NYC playing carts despite his dislike of travel while a disco ball appeared as Spandau Ballet's This Much is True started playing near the end of a Negativland concert I attended in the early 2000's, and I knew one day I'd loop that on a show.
Avatar 3:39pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Recently I was listening to the Ode to Joy yodelling/banjo fun theme from Coen brothers' Raising Arizona, credited to Carter Burwell, and went digging to figure out what the other part of it is that isn't from Beethoven's 9th, and discovered that the entire thing was directly lifted from a Pete Seeger piece from 1963.
Avatar 3:39pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

And then I dug further and realized that one was lifted from a 1937 piece by Sons of the Pioneers with Roy Rogers.
  3:40pm
Listener Robert:

Negativland had concerts? I thought they existed only in analog tape space.
Avatar 3:41pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

They toured through my lands twice - once in the 90's bringing toasters burning toast during the show.
  3:42pm
Listener Robert:

Oh, yeah, I heard about the toast. So they existed in toasterspace.
Avatar 3:44pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I also toured through their studio once during an OTE broadcast and joined in a bit. Very analog, just rang the doorbell while I was driving by across country in the middle of the night.
Avatar 3:47pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

which makes me think fondly of when I got my station's middle-of-the-night doorbell fixed, although I never got any cross-country drive-bys as a result. I did dangle a mic on a long cord out the window by said doorbell, though, which did get used sometimes.
Avatar 3:50pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Do I miss the horrid ice cream truck music loops outside my window? I did like when the knife sharpening truck would drive by ringing its bell. It always drove by too quickly for me to get out there with my dull knives. Too many stairs.
Avatar 3:52pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Now I'm marveling at how long earlier my 2001 field recordings felt to me when I first did this in 2003.
Avatar 3:56pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

which makes me think of the field recordings I made around then walking through the world trade center concourse (prob. on my way home from client work) which turned out to be marred by static because of what turned out to be a bit of aluminum foil lingering in the mic port of the recorder I'd borrowed from someone who'd done a stage show involving lots of foil in his costume. For future field recording sessions, I kept headphones on.
