David, do you a link for the Esperanto virtual congress?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, TDK and Marie - I hope the translation was even close.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm David Dichelle:

Here's the link for the Congress: vk.esperanto.net
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm David Dichelle:

Although that's more of a sign-up link, actually. There's probably a better explanatory one somewhere.
Avatar 12:26pm βrian:

I still think the Desperanto is the more likely lingua franca.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Handy Haversack:

Hi, David, Voyageurs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm David Dichelle:

Michael: That is an overview of the organization. In any case, it is the online substitute for the congress that was supposed to happen in Belfast this year. It of course also makes it easier for people to take part from far-flung places - like Leipzig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm David Dichelle:

Hey, there, Handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Carmichael:

Wasn't Desperanto an Eagles song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm David Dichelle:

βrian: If that is another word for English, you may in fact be right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Handy Haversack:

David, am I safe in assuming that  Saint Barthélemy is too small to count for Random Road?
  12:31pm Marie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm David Dichelle:

Handy, it is on my list but I haven't had a real look/listen yet. Hard to tell.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Handy Haversack:

Exactly, Michael!

Kate's feeling much better. My fever spiked overnight, which was kind of crappy. Not feeling so great today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Threemoons:

HH sorry to hear that....treat yourself kindly...glad that Kate is on the mend also...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm David Dichelle:

Sorry to hear that, Handy. Hope you're both better soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, all. It could definitely be worse. I decided to take an actual sick day today, too. Been in and out most of the morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm David Dichelle:

Ah yes, a bit of Spanish in the wild mix.
  12:42pm headcleaner:

What attracts me to learning languages is precisely ... the challenge of mastering their illogicality and nuttiness. That, and getting to pretend I'm on a spy mission when I go down to the corner to order coffee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm David Dichelle:

Headcleaner, well put - which have you been learning lately?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Michael 98145:

@hc, think of it as anthropology

Now i'm curious. How did they blend the Slavic languages into Esperanto?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Brian in UK:

David, you must mind your manners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Brian in UK:

...when posting comments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm David Dichelle:

Brian: The lines are hard to cross here - of course, it has happened on occasion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm David Dichelle:

Michael: The vocabulary is taken primarily from Romance and Germanic but also some Slavic and bits of other languages. The grammar is artificial, although definitely anchored in European languages, but also regular and leaves lots of room for creative word-building and the like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm David Dichelle:

Headcleaner: Sounds good. Let's hope such things become more possible sometime soon.
  1:11pm Kpx:

Hey Carmichael , efd is filling in for (you know who) so its safe to amble overthere for this afternoon if you feel like it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Kpx!
  1:20pm headcleaner:

We're all riding a "barco" right now
Avatar 1:20pm βrian:

Did somebody get in trouble with "you know who"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm David Dichelle:

Does barco work in Catalan as well?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Handy Haversack:

I had the FM broadcast on as I made lunch, and luckily got to hear efd play K8's band!

Though it's hectic, I kind of like when a show on the streams and one on the FM command my attention. Flipping back and forth is like being in the car as a kind and jumping among radio stations back when there were more than one decent radio station!
  1:27pm headcleaner:

Had to look it up ("barco") but apparently it does. I'm still at the "cafè amb llet" stage, learning to mouth phrases, get the gist of written texts, etc. I figure if I can manage not to trip over the various double-l realizations by the time I get there, I'll be doing a fairly decent job
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm David Dichelle:

Handy: Yes, WFMU is today's car radio with good options. (Don't get me started on the local radio here.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm David Dichelle:

Hold on, which is K8's band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Phillippe:

@Handy if I had to multitask on that level for my work soundtrack given my current workload, my head would officially explode. I would be given a certificate and everything
Avatar 1:30pm TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm David Dichelle:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm David Dichelle:

Headcleaner: Well bona sort! (At least that's what I just found)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm David Dichelle:

Thanks for the link, Brian - looks interesting.
  1:35pm headcleaner:

βrian - "quem eu quiiser" means "who[m] I like" or "the one I like". "On my boat, with my one and only" is a free translation of the refrain
  1:37pm headcleaner:

Gràcies, ho necessitaré! (I'll definitely need it)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Brian in UK:

Hey stanlé, how is le belle France?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Yvang:

What? Nick Cave has haters?
  2:38pm stanlé:

it's been hot enough to boil a dingo's bum, here. just cool enough now to sit outside
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm David Dichelle:

Hey, it's the Maine man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Brian in UK:

Crack a tube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Brian in UK:

Doug, hope you are eating lobster not looking like one.
  2:40pm stanlé:

that's a bonza idea, Brian. cheers mate
  2:42pm headcleaner:

Yvang - yes it's true - they're very "knowledgable" musically, and fairly stated they run circles around me in that department - but then there's that "Okay, so what have -you- done music-wise? You know, on a stage, in front people?" question I dont have the hear to ask
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Handy Haversack:

Hope all is well, stanlé.
  2:45pm Doug from Maine:

@Brian in UK
Been cool and foggy, mostly. Good lobster eating weather.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm dutchtheo:

Smoky lobster, Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Handy Haversack:

Has Midnight Oil fallen out of favor? They played some of the most blisteringly amazing live shows I ever saw. Still listen to Blue Sky Mining regularly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm David Dichelle:

Handy, one step ahead as ever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Brian in UK:

Midnight Oil, are the standard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm David Dichelle:

Programming note: Charlie unfortunately had to cancel due to technical issues. So 2 more hours of the Subway to follow...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Yvang:

I guess it's difficult to musically cover a country like Australia in just one hour...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Yvang:

2 more hours of Australia? I vote yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Brian in UK:

Oh no, two more hours of Aussie music!!!!
  2:50pm headcleaner:

2 more hours of Australian Cyboogaloo, you mean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Handy Haversack:

Whoa, really?

IN college, not long after my dad had died, one of my closest friends from growing up, who was in college a few more stops up the Metro North, got in touch and said we had plans for my birthday, and he would pick me up and we'd head into Manhattan. He just asked that I not look at the Voice or anything. And I didn't! And managed to keep my head down as we went into Irving Plaza and so it wasn't until I saw a poster at the bar there that I realized we were there for Midnight Oil.

That show was insane. Australians in the crowd were telling us it reminded them of the pure punksplosion shows MO had played ten, fifteen years before. So great. A really wonderful gift. I still have the ticket stub.

Thanks, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Michael 98145:

Yay! better make a trip to the dining and the hygiene cars ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Phillippe:

Nice, this Midnight Oil makes me happy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm David Dichelle:

I know, right?
Avatar 2:53pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I remember sleeping during whatever the opening act before Midnight Oil was, when I went to see them in 1990.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm David Dichelle:

Happy but pensive - this message moved me back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Brian in UK:

Handy, great story, good friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Yvang:

I've heard too much of "Beds are Burning" but Midnight Oil was the best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Kenzo!
  2:54pm Marie:

Hey, thoroughly enjoying the show (busy at work)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Phillippe:

Thanks for a great and thoughtful show David.

Catch y'all behind the bleachers after school!

Thanks, Marie!

This show is only getting started, Phillippe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Yvang:

From busy at work to Men at Work?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Michael 98145:

That was the problem with "new wave" radio, they beat the bed until it was broken down
Avatar 2:56pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I have found the date for my Midnight Oil show, but it doesn't mention the opener. "30 Sep 1990 - Cornell University, Ithaca, NY (USA)"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Michael 98145:

@Diana S, what is life like in Hungary these days? The closest we've been is Slovakia ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm doctorjazz:

Forgot you're doing a double dip show!
Avatar 3:06pm Listening Out There:

I'm filling in for another listener. Making the big $ while doing so...

not quite the effect of Nancy Sinatra. well on me, anyway.
Avatar 3:14pm Erica:

Hi guys! Turns out Larry isn't DJing today. Makes sense that he hosted a five hour extended show last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm David Dichelle:

Nick Cave apparently has boots as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Handy Haversack:

Current Australian bands I have been digging: the Chats; Amyl and the Sniffers; Potion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm David Dichelle:

Hey Erica, yes Larry was nice enough to fill in for this show last week in fact.
  3:16pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks for covering, David. I had a root canal this afternoon.
Avatar 3:17pm Erica:

Guess you can say you're returning the favor. Sorry for not tuning in sooner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm David Dichelle:

My pleasure, Larry - although it sounds like much less pleasure on your end. I hope it went well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm David Dichelle:

True, Erica. Charlie was originally filling in but had technical difficulties, so I'm happy to return the favor.
  3:19pm Funky16Corners:

It was ok. I still can’t feel the right side of my face, but no pain.
  3:19pm stanlé:

cyber-donna!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm David Dichelle:

Glad it went as well as possible, Larry.
Avatar 3:22pm Erica:

Ooh Larry. I had two root canals done so I know the pain. Unfortunately one of mine got infected and the tooth had to be pulled out. The other one is okay though.
  3:24pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Erica! This is my first trip to the dentist since the beginning of COVID, so all things considered, not too bad.
Avatar 3:25pm Erica:

Yeah mine got done pre-Covid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Handy Haversack:

Emergency pandemic dentist visits became our stock in trade for a while. Ferry to Manhattan, walk from 34th and 1st to 51st and 6th ... rinse, repeat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Diana Senechal:

Michael 98145: Really hard to answer that question generally (and via my phone on the train). Beautiful country, great music and literature, and all sorts of things in daily life that I am fond of. Politically not so great, but the government isn’t the same as the country, and I hear many different opinions and perspectives on what is going on. I have been there almost four years and plan to stay.
Avatar 3:28pm TDK60:

After years of hearing loss, I just got a hearing aid, in one ear. Sounds odd.
Avatar 3:29pm Erica:

Speaking of teeth, two of my top teeth kept throbbing for some reason.
Avatar 3:31pm Erica:

Hey that background music was covered by cats and become an internet meme. www.youtube.com...
Avatar 3:33pm Erica:

Avatar 3:40pm Jeff Moore:

William Barton is one of Australia’s leading didgeridoo players and has taken the wonders of this ancient instrument to the world. He regularly performs around the globe, and his album Kalkadungu won the 2012 ARIA Award for Best Classical Album.

Musically, Barton grew up in both worlds having learned to play didgeridoo from his uncle, an elder of the Waanyi, Lardil and Kalkadunga tribes of western Queensland, while listening to classical music through his mother, Delmae Barton, who is an opera singer. It is no wonder William’s music has blended these two traditions.

When he met and worked with Peter Sculthorpe, one of Australia’s leading classical composers, both men knew they’d come across a kindred spirit. Sculthorpe taught Barton how to write for classical instruments using western notation and Barton helped Sculthorpe to realise his life-long ambition of bringing Aboriginal music into his composition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Michael 98145:

@Diana S, hope to visit there. Someday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Michael 98145:

this is fascinating music ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Jeff - yes fascinating stuff.
Avatar 3:47pm Jeff Moore:

[to be clear, the works on Birdsong at Dusk were composed by Barton, not Sculthorpe]

Avatar 4:14pm Jeff Moore:

Memory is a funny thing. I could've sworn that Klezmania had featured in a klezmer break in one of my shows a few years ago, but I had a look back and... neither Klezmania nor the Klezmatics!

But (tacky though it is to pimp one's own shows)... if AFTER this excellent journey conducted by David is over you want to take a trip from drumming rhythms in 2018 back through Benny Goodman in 1938 and then into latter-day klezmer performances... there's such a set in here (the second one):

Just mentioning it because I enjoyed it myself.
