With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

Not sure if that's relevant, but the "Ich rede wie ein Papagei" might be related to a German language textbook in France. It's the only reason I know Papagei means Parrot, and almost all I remember from these German classes

Hi coel!
RevRabbit, I've read descriptions of circular breathing, and I don't get it, either. I expect it's one of those things, like having sex or riding a bicycle, that you really gotta do to know what it is.
  1:42pm spodiodi:

i think hear that too, doctorjazz

  1:47pm Martinibomb:

gawd i luv stereo total just going ta miss Ms Cactus
  1:47pm Martinibomb:

amazing live band was able to see them a few times - well pretty much every chance I could
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm doctorjazz:

It's not something I could do, and I don't think all horn players can, but you basically inhale through your nose, keep air in your cheeks for blowing into the instrument, and somehow replenish the air in the cheeks with the nasal inhale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm doctorjazz:

Again, Stereo Total new to me, liked that sound.
Avatar 1:49pm TDK60:

Never knew Stereo Total.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm fred:

@Stork: My complete inability to learn German is why I ended up a coder. I've always been more drawn to literary stuff, but mastery of German was a requirement here, so I was discarded to a scientific path
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm doctorjazz:

Drew A TOTAL blank on them, hehehehe.

btw y'all be sure to check out the tribute that Gary Sullivan o Bodega Pop did for The Lolitas, which was basically the predecessor band to Stereo Total, earlier in the week - https://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/101415

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm adamdoesit:

Herr dj, I daresay you've made a few new Stereo Total fans today. I'm gonna count myself one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm fred:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm doctorjazz:

@Fred, read your comment, got a big laugh at the table.

...I'm listening to you & watching Mighty Joe Young on faceborg - does that count ??...

Lhasa, another great loss

Somehow, you're not blowing into the horn from your chest, but filling your cheeks and squeezing them to push air into the horn. You breath through you're nose, using that air to keep refilling the cheeks. Crazy!

Catuaria, live on Irene Trudel's show back in '99. Irene - like I gotta tell YOU, is on GTDR tomorrow at noon EST. Join me there?

Was fortunate to be able to see Vinicius Cantuaria at The Jazz Standard shortly before the latter's demise

i'm really good at walking, but just okay at chewing gum -so that brings down the whole level of quality of my walking while chewing gum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm adamdoesit:

This year, plain old still breathing seems like achievement enough.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm coelacanth∅:

yeah doc, i don't think my brain can do that!
Avatar 2:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Word adamdoesit !
  2:12pm headcleaner:

Never thought to try to learn circle breathing - but I imagine it must work on the same principle as this "fire breathing" business that yogis do (and which I do, when I do yogi-type stuff) - that is, you don't *direct* your longs to start breathing in as you're blowing (which is of course impossible), but you *allow* them to take air in as they naturally rebound from the forced exhale
  2:12pm Dean:

"Ich rede wie ein Papagei" appears on p.131 of Die fernen nächte;
roman, by Walter Pegel, published in 1943. Here's the context:

  2:13pm headcleaner:

You'll never be able to take in as much air as from regular breathing, of course. But you'll be able to get a few sips in -- just enough to get a few more blows out, a bit more forcefully.
Avatar 2:14pm Stork:

Rita Payes is really something to watch - putting down her guitar and picking up the trombone, then back to the guitar. Check her out on YT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm adamdoesit:

If Rita Payes, I'll have another.
Avatar 2:17pm Stork:

adamdoesit flashes the yuks. We knew you would.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm coelacanth∅:

interesting, that sips of air concept. i took some yoga sessions in trade once, and she directed us to keep taking little sips of air until we absolutely (thought) we couldn't hold any more - then release it all in one forceful blow.
...sort of the opposite

Exercise time, gotta run, thanks for the great tunes Stork! Great week all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm WR:

saw Harry Hosono a couple of years ago. he started by saying he was honored that everyone came to see the band and hoped we understood and not be too disappointed that they were just going to be playing their version of American music that they like.

coel∅ - yes it turns out that many things we've trained our autonomous nervous system to do - like walking, breathing, speaking - and for which we think that there's only one way to do them... in turns out there's a whole bunch of different ways to do them

I haven't mastered circular breathing, but I'm a virtuoso at circular reasoning.
