Heino  Aloha Oe   Options Heino    (“…For a two year period or so we used to play Heino over the P.A. before every Dead Kennedy’s show, to annoy the fans who just want to hear punk records. In Hamburg the Mohican studded-leather jacket types at first broke into traditional German folk dances as a joke, but when they realized they were getting more than one Heino song, they threw everything they could find at the sound booth until he was turned off.” - Jello)

German News  The Die Toten Hosen & Heino Scadal   Options Youtube    (“There’s a German band named Die Totenhosen (a popular, funny punk band a la The Dickies) who as a gag had one of their friends come onstage dressed as Heino, complete with shades and blonde wig, claiming he was the real Heino. Then they’d do butcher jobs of Heino songs, making fun of him. Heino sued, claiming exclusive rights to the name, the songs, the shades and the look - he cannot be parodied. To prove that he’d didn’t have exclusive rights to the look, Die Totenhosen packed the courtroom with fans all dressed as Heino! This proved somewhat humiliating, and Heino withdrew and refused to talk to the press about this.” - Jello)

Welcome! My levels are being a little wonky, so let me know if things need to be turned up or down.

Avatar 2:01pm BC Sterrett:

Hey there notso!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Rich in Washington:

Hi BC! Listening while scarfing down breakfast.
Avatar 2:02pm BC Sterrett:

How are the levels?
Avatar 2:02pm BC Sterrett:

Hey Rich :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Kat in Chicago:

Beck sounds like a Sheena's fan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm notsoKWYET:

seems good to me right now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm notsoKWYET:

I'm heading to the store to get some brown sugar but will be listening on the way... back in a bit
Avatar 2:06pm BC Sterrett:

Hi Kat! See you soon Notso :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Rich in Washington:

It's interesting to note that through his long career, Heino never succumbed to the trend of doing covers of contemporaneous pop hits - there's no inevitable Beatles covers, etc.
I guess his target audience wanted more folk inspired music, music from an earlier time, etc.
Only at the end of his run, he covered Kraftwerk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm zivilars:

Holy shit ... It's Heino again!
Avatar 2:21pm BC Sterrett:

I need to hear the Kraftwerk cover!
Avatar 2:21pm BC Sterrett:

Do you have a link?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Rich in Washington:

Oh wow. I only have Heino's 60s/60s LPs. I've never heard Disco Heino. I would imagine there's Teutonic Techno Heino as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Rich in Washington:

Want me to PM it to you or do you want me to put a YT link here? I hate doing the latter - it seems rude to do on someone's show, but will if you want me to.
Avatar 2:23pm BC Sterrett:

I found it! He covers The Model?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm zivilars:

This is also very funny – from the first Otto movie: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Rich in Washington:

Ja. Das Model, auf Das Letzte Album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Rich in Washington:

Oh, I was vaguely aware of this track. Didn't he do something with Rammstein?
Avatar 2:26pm BC Sterrett:

He did! There's live footage with Rammstein on youtube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Rich in Washington:

I played some Heino on my KBOO show last night. I had my Heinos up on my record wall because I found another one in the wild recently but they were creeping my wife out so switched them out but gave a couple of them a spin before reshelving them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Rich in Washington:

The Heino doc is worth checking out. I think I blabbed about it last week.
Sure am digging your deep dives into the Jello portion of the book. I've been listening to lots of older Jello projects lately.
Avatar 2:32pm BC Sterrett:

Wow this cover version is great!
  2:32pm Martinibomb:

Helloooo BC Hi Rich!! Ziv
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm zivilars:

Hi Martinibomb! BC Sterrett, thanks for the credit! :)
Avatar 2:38pm Sem:

BCS, all, hello. Ready for some of the cool, some of the strange, and plenty of outsider.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Rich in Washington:

hey, Martinibomb! How iz?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Rich in Washington:

Listening while updating my KBOO show archive page. apparently I neglected to update the index since May.
Avatar 2:44pm BC Sterrett:

I didn't know you were still with KBOO, didn't you quit some shows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Rich in Washington:

No. Not yet. I am waiting for them to throw me out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Rich in Washington:

JK. My being able to do my show remotely from my home studio has renewed my interest in doing radio there. I was getting tired of schlepping my tired ass to and from the station, driving there in the middle of the night, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Rich in Washington:

Is this live audio from the Oval Office?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Rich in Washington:

I love that track Mao Tse Tung Said by Alabama 3 that uses lots of this audio.
Avatar 3:00pm BC Sterrett:

I'm not really a fan of this record but these are the tracks mentioned in the chapter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Rich in Washington:

Who is this guy talking? The playlist doesn't seem to be updating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm zivilars:

Rich, do you have a link to your KBOO show archive? Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm zivilars:

Thanks, Rich! Will check it out!
Avatar 3:05pm BC Sterrett:

These spoken word segments are from Bubba Free John, aka Da Free John and various other names...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Rich in Washington:

I don't remember this part. These shows are making me want to dig my book out and read the Jello section again. It was so good, but really REALLY in depth. I probably didn't even read all of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Rich in Washington:

That cackling sounds uncannily like that Jim Jones' laughing that was looped by Psychic TV.
Avatar 3:12pm BC Sterrett:

I love this chapter because Biafra goes above and beyond with his interview, ...so much detail and content.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm StringOFperils:

I've been wondering why no one ever seems to play witch conversations on the radio any more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Rich in Washington:

Oh weird. I had to refresh the page to make the playlist appear updated. I wonder what's up with my browser.
Avatar 3:20pm BC Sterrett:

Lol String :)
Avatar 3:21pm BC Sterrett:

There are going to be several spoken word records in the next show or two...
Avatar 3:22pm BC Sterrett:

What is this sudden background noise? I guess it represents drugs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Rich in Washington:

This is fun. It's like the witch equivalent to that 'Groupies' record.
Avatar 3:24pm BC Sterrett:

There is no track separations on Side A.
Avatar 3:24pm BC Sterrett:

Ha, this IS like the Groupies record!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Kat in Chicago:

Rich, I had to refresh mine too.
Avatar 3:30pm BC Sterrett:

Anyone gonna take these witch tests?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Rich in Washington:

I wonder if there's any effects which would pitch 78s up to speed live?
Avatar 3:37pm BC Sterrett:

I pitched it up as fast as it would go on this player...
Avatar 3:40pm BC Sterrett:

Have you ever had a dream that, that, um, that you had, uh, that you had to, you could, you do, you wit, you wa, you could do so, you do you could, you want, you wanted him to do you so much you could do anything?
Avatar 3:41pm ironybread:

"Why in my day we had to buy RECORDS to take stupid quizzes on the Internet!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Kat in Chicago:

Whoopie-doo! I'm psychic!
Avatar 3:43pm ironybread:

BC: omigod I totally had that dream last night I can't believe it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Rich in Washington:

I remember once seeing a longtime KBOO DJ handspinning a record on a turntable with a dead motor in a production studio and he was almost pitch perfect.
Avatar 3:45pm Herk Hilligoss:

It was really me DJ-ing this show all along!!! ah aha ha ha ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm happymaan:

This is great.
Avatar 3:48pm ironybread:

The best thing about playing records at the wrong speed, which is a thing I enjoy, is that there are an infinite number of wrong speeds.
Avatar 3:52pm Herk Hilligoss:

I had a college friend (fellow radio DJ) tell me that she was becoming a witch, I responded, "Aren't you a Christian?" She answered, "Yeah, that's a problem." According to this record if you're a white witch it's ok..
  3:54pm Linda Lee:

hey, if you're really becoming a witch, it isn't. ;-)
  3:54pm Linda Lee:

hi Herk!
Avatar 3:54pm Sem:

Vastly entertaining stuff, thank you, BCS.
Avatar 3:55pm Herk Hilligoss:

Hi Linda! Thanks Sem :)
  3:57pm Linda Lee:

wow. this sounds like dating tips. 'be cool. don't go chasing after it.' ..
  3:58pm Linda Lee:

if he's really into you, he'll chase after you! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Rich in Washington:

I think it sounds better at this speed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm StringOFperils:

Jello. Goodbye. Thanks!
Avatar 3:59pm Herk Hilligoss:

See you next week everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks, BC! Wonderful show!
  3:59pm Linda Lee:

is this the jello itself?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks, Herk!
Avatar 3:59pm Herk Hilligoss:

YEs :)
Avatar 4:00pm Herk Hilligoss:

That's a wrap!
