Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Not quite a hippie....actually someone who is generally Dead-averse and has been told for decades that "You just have to hear the right stuff". So I'm giving this a shot. Full disclosure: my aversion comes from the fact that I attended a Grateful Dead show in the late 1980's at MSG alone and sober and they did Space and Drums. I wound up in a snack bar with a television watching whatever sports were on that night.

Dead had kind of a unique start - really developing with Kesey & the Merry Pranksters' Acid Tests - LSD Happenings. The band was far from even being the focus : they might play - they might not ! Far from a typical club apprenticeship or residency. Strikes me that the Dead kept this sly orientation to courting the Muse - completely non-aggressive. See what happens. Not surprisingly - a lot like taking psychedelics : you can try & choose the right time & place - but you don't know what the trip will be about until you're on it really? fwiw.

Early on they were still freaking out with everybody else? & then it became about mediating relations between Space & Earth - as it did for everyone the further from 1967 it got... of course for the Dead - it developed that wherever they were playing became the Acid Capitol of the World...

Uh-oh Jon, this "Tennessee Jed" is from the Brent era! Only in the Dead would a guy change his name from "Sommers" to "Kreutzman" for show biz purposes.
