  3:50pm John from Florham park:

@BIUK just wish he would crawl under a rock and go away
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm spodiodi:

aloha, David, all! (been listening as unrelated nonsense allows 8^)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm doctorjazz:

John FFP-you probably know as much as I do about the Coronavirus outbreak of you've been paying attention to the news (because not that much is known). Basically, the main recommendations are isolating possible contacts for 14 days, and lots of hand washing. It seems the serious cases mostly affect the elderly or people with underlying medical problems (not so different from flu in that way)
Avatar 3:53pm Brian in UK:

He is still taking pay and expenses as a European member of parliament.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm spodiodi:

the virus has me seriously contemplating bugging-out of sf for a time
  3:56pm John from Florham park:

@Doctor jazz been doing all kinds of washing already
@BIUK too bad
@Spod find an island with internet access
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm spodiodi:

John fFp - they found it can travel in pipes in buildings, but not cell data streams yet. thinking more arid environs
Avatar 3:57pm Brian in UK:

David, not sure if they are still around but there was a Scottish folk band with the wonderful name of The Whistlebinkies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Phillippe Bastille:

David, you will have to request a special symbol for pledgers to your program, maybe a little subway token?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Webhamster Henry:

@Phillippe I have some old Fahrscheine from Vienna I think. 7.50 schillings a ride!
  4:00pm John from Florham park:

@Spod working from home a lot right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm spodiodi:

  4:02pm John from Florham park:

@Spod tropical island is much better:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm spodiodi:

more fish and coconuts at least. i'm not much of a beach type though
  4:03pm John from Florham park:

Me neither and I lived in south Florida for 35 years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm spodiodi:

plus harder to drive to an island, and i'm with B.A. Baracus
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Phillippe Bastille:

@YH the old NY subway token was pretty cool looking. Could use it for the return trip to Leipzig: img0.etsystatic.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Phillippe Bastille:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm David Dichelle:

Aloha right back atcha, Spodiodi!
Avatar 4:10pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@David D: Not too late to get you a subway token icon for pledgers. Get in touch...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Cmurtha:

This is too similar to turkish to be Kyrgyz, but sounds too different to be Azeri. Uzbeks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Kenzo, I will!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm David Dichelle:

Cmurtha, you got it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Cmurtha:

I love this very soviet sound of mixing synth/electric organ with real drums. Never understood why they could not steal a drum machine, but it worked out well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Cmurtha:

and nice! So strange, the chorus is like 100% turkish, but then after that it became unintelligible to me.
Avatar 4:13pm βrian:

A colleague brought me a bottle of Kyrgyz cognac from his travels. Who knew? It was delicious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm David Dichelle:

Cmurtha, do you speak Turkish?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Cmurtha:

@Brian they make weirdly good canned food to. Not that I recommend canned food as a generally statement, but they Uzbeks stilll make what are basically civilian canned MRES of oddly high quality
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Cmurtha:

Yes David, needed to pick it up for my dissertation (which is being written as we speak). I can speak Turkish very well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm spodiodi:

nice ear, Cmurtha. impressive!
Avatar 4:25pm Listening Out There:

Enjoying the bits of the program I've heard so far...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm David Dichelle:

Wow, good luck with the dissertation - what's your field?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm doctorjazz:

Subway token sounds cool...my wife still has a few.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm David Dichelle:

Hey LOT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Cmurtha:

I do Ottoman History. The diss is a intellectual and cultural history of childhood in youth in the pre-modern Ottoman Empire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm David Dichelle:

Cmurtha: That sounds fascinating. Which years and regions does it involve?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Cmurtha:

I focus only on the Istanbull Elites as I am interested in the texts they collected and their writings. The years are 1500-1720, though most of my source base is 16th and 17th century stuff.
Avatar 4:36pm Brian in UK:

@Cmurtha, I am still confused; Kemal Ataturk took power with attempts at secularism but both times I have stayed in Istanbul the muezzins still give you the early morning call.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm WR:

David, since you asked, GS for Japanese pop music in 60s referred to "group sounds" from their wikipedia page: 「グループ・サウンズ=不良」のイメージが強かった1960年代当時、数多のグループ・サウンズの中でザ.

Running that through Google translate and you can see it was a rock band style, image..
Avatar 4:38pm βrian:

What, no foot rest jokes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Cmurtha:

@brian he wanted to create a secular state on western lines. Which is to say, no religious law, separation where possible of church and state and placing the state at the top of the hierarchy. He never wanted to expunge al elements of Islam from his society and he knew that would also be impossible. He attacked certain elements of "popular" faith that he saw as backwards (visitation to tombs, sufi lodges) both of which trickled back over time. In the call to prayer he, for a time, had it said in Turkish, though that also reverted.
  4:42pm ?:

Howdy from a tram ride in Melbourne!
Avatar 4:44pm Brian in UK:

@Cmurtha we are on a train now; is the metro completed and running now in Istanbul.
  4:44pm The Knave:

... oops The Knave from Five Miles To Midnight here - managing to tune in for the first time..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm spodiodi:

thanks for playing Breakout, David! i have known the DJ FOrmat song which samples it, but not the original until you just played it
Avatar 4:45pm Sem:

Brian, on the Midnight Special?
Avatar 4:46pm Brian in UK:

Sem, night train to Vienna would do for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Webhamster Henry:

Autoharp Alert!!! Patric Couton is another top-notchFrench Autoharpiste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm David Dichelle:

The Knave - great to see you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Carmichael:

Is this Bottle of Wine?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm spodiodi:

sweet tune here too ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm spodiodi:

sure sounds like it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Webhamster Henry:

It's a better vintage of Bottle of Wine.
  4:48pm John from Florham park:

@Cmurtha this is why I find the chats so fascinating on the internet streams, you can get more in-depth then on the regular chats
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm David Dichelle:

WR (above): Thanks for the explanation, something like the Russian VIAs, I suppose.
Avatar 4:49pm Brian in UK:

@WH apologies if I have mentioned this before; there was an English pop group called Pinkertons Assorted Colours in the Sixties had a hit called Mirror, Mirror. They featured an autoharp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Carmichael:

Jimmy Gilmer put a little more ooomph into it ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm WR:

Didn't know until recently that Bottle of Wine is Tom Paxton song.
Avatar 4:51pm Sem:

I must tell you the story of an overnight train ride from Agadir to Tangier, and the joys of 4 Moroccan smokers in a 6 person compartment, BiUK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Cmurtha:

Which metro Brian? I was in Istanbul last year and the airport metros were not finished, but they had bus service. I think the train stations have metros to them, or trams at least. (I shalll return latler)
  4:58pm melinda:

Howdee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Carmichael:

@WR, yes, and a few verses were left out of the Fireballs version, presumably for AM song length.
  4:59pm John from Florham park:

@Melinda howdy back
Avatar 5:04pm Brian in UK:

Cmurtha, yes there were still lines to be finished. I think from the airport into the centre. The Archaeology Museum was overwhelmed with items that were found when digging due to Istanbul's long history. Boats with wine amphoras and much more.
I was amazed that the city stretched out to the new airport on the Asian side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Stanley:

Wow, I nodded off. This woke me up.
  5:07pm John from Florham park:

@Stanley has to be after 10 your time?
Avatar 5:07pm Sem:

Carmichael, I see you are anticipating St. Patrick's Day festivities...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Stanley:

Yes, John. Long day at work, too.
  5:11pm John from Florham park:

@Stanley ouch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Phillippe Bastille:

Thanks David! Logging off to make the Shrove Tuesday pancakes!
  5:14pm John from Florham park:

@PB yummy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm David Dichelle:

Take care, PB, sounds delicious!
Avatar 5:16pm Sem:

Oh, I get it. Comoros. Cool, beautiful.
Avatar 5:20pm Sem:

There is a lovely rhythm to this...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm David Dichelle:

Sem, yes heading westward...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Webhamster Henry:

@DD Thanks for the lead! I was playing a little bit of autoharp in public last Saturday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Webhamster Henry:

Sorry, I meant @Brian/UK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Stanley:

Salif Keita was wonderful live. One of my best gigs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm David Dichelle:

Henry: Do you manage to perform often?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm David Dichelle:

Stanley: Wonderful on recordings as well, I can only imagine...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Stanley:

David - truly one of the world greats
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Webhamster Henry:

@David I perform kind of often, but not on the autoharp. I'm in a gamelan, so I play Sundanese gamelan instruments, and in another band where I play hammered dulcimer, melodica, glockenspiel and tenor recorders and sing a little. I play that melodica with a bluegrass pickup group every week too. They didn't like the autoharp so much!
  5:36pm melinda:

I like melodica but don’t associate it with bluegrass. I guess it could work like a harmonica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm David Dichelle:

Sounds like a wonderful variety, Henry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm David Dichelle:

Hello Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm spodiodi:

nice, Webhamster Henry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Webhamster Henry:

@melissa Yes it is like that - accordion and harmonica.
It goes nicely with the fiddle and bass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Webhamster Henry:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Stanley:

Goy a bunch of 17 Hippies stuff. Great band but could never handle their name very well
Avatar 5:47pm Brian in UK:

Stanley, been thinking of getting one of 17 Hippies albums. Any recommendations?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm David Dichelle:

Yes, they are great in concert too - and they are neither necessarily 17 nor hippies.
Avatar 5:56pm Brian in UK:

David, great variety as ever. Prepare to chew water as you will not be able to afford food for two weeks!! Good night.
Avatar 5:56pm Sem:

Jet lagged from music from everywhere, but in a good, good way.
My stop. Thank you, Conductor DD. Good evening to you, and time zone appropriate sentiments to all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Stanley:

Hi Brian - some of the tracks I have is off 17 Hippies Play Sexy Ambient Hippies but I prefer thealbum with Marc Ribot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm David Dichelle:
