Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

The composer of the music for Zorba the Greek, Mikis Theodorakis, was exiled to the island of Ikaria, along with 13,000 other poets, artists and communists during the Greek civil war.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:12am Brian in UK:

Doug, Theodorakis is one of my heroes. The late Sixties in Greece when the colonels were is power was shocking.

Just made it for the last boarding call...and the train is still sitting here with the doors open, at 9:17. Meanwhile, this *never* is the case when I arrive at 9:06. Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:22am Brian in UK:

Doug, was Rembetika generally an urban music or did it reach the islands?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Doug Schulkind:

@Maggie
We flew out of Athens about half a day before the catastrophe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
There was a presence of a rembetika history on the island, but that may have been a retro thing and not an organic music from the early days.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am melinda:

hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Goyim in the AM:

@ausmanx: I am a transplanted Marylander, which means (as Doug can confirm) I am accustomed to hotter temperatures. But the Germanic fear of any moving air -- "voss dat a draft? CLOSE ALL VINDOWS IMMEDIATELY!" -- to say nothing of COOLED air makes the situation a different one.
Avatar 9:27am ausmanx:

some of that greek stuff which was recorded early century by the greek migrants to NY was pretty amazing... who's the guy who documented and released a lot of it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

@sinner
Our flight out of Athens left Sunday evening. The fires descended starting Monday afternoon. They were as close as 25 kilometers to Athens.
Avatar 9:27am burke:

Avatar 9:32am ausmanx:

ah, ian nagoski. canary-records.bandcamp.com... wonderful records
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Nothing is confirmed, but many are saying that the fires are suspicious. There seem to have been a number of them that started simultaneously in different locations. Greece has a whole sordid history with arson. It's not pretty.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:37am holland oats:

that straw better not be plastic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Goyim in the AM:

Yeah, forest arson for profit is a thing in Greece and has been for decades, sadly.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:38am Sem:

Felt a shooter of "12" was a good palate cleanser, perhaps only because I'd had several before this realization struck me.

Bottom line: ouzo does not lead to good decisions, but does enhance the feeling of a Zorba the Greek experience.

  9:47am Jeff g., on the LIRR:

Postscript: I seem to have boarded the wrong train, misreading the track numbers. Also, I'm an idiot. This music is helping me feel better about it, though.
