Flipped the switch... Country music fans knew him as Joe Pain, but his parents, Noah and Ester Trent gave him the name Ernest C. Trent when he came into the world in December 1944 in Harlan, Kentucky. This was not your typical family. There were ten boys and eight girls in all. And when company came to visit, he had to sleep out in the smokehouse so the guests would have a place to retire.

In the crime novels of Chester Himes, he uses the phrase "mother-raper," instead of the presumably prohibited "mother-f*cker." I found the replacement more profane than the original.

Here's what I wrote about Moussa Doumbia on my Favorites of 2007 post on the WFMU blog:

Godfather of Soul wannabes sprang up like kudzu in the 1960s and '70s, and, outside of Chicago and Detroit, the most badass Brown imitators per hectare came from the gritty urban centers of East and West Africa. Anwar Richard and Matata ruled Nairobi, Geraldo Pino and the Heartbeats conquered Lagos, but the heaviest of heavyweight Afrofunkateers may have been Mali's sax-playing, leather-lunged soul belter Moussa Doumbia, who toiled in semiobscurity in the nightclubs of Ivory Coast's capital city Abidjan. Doumbia was a cool cat but no copycat. While others merely reproduced the James Brown sound, Doumbia seemingly conjured, on a nightly basis, the very soul of Soul Brother No. 1 itself. His massive funk workouts featured all the withering, from-the-gut grunts and squeals, but they were layered over a dense thicket of his native Dioula rhythms—along with, of course, skronking horns and skanky guitars. This French compilation of Doumbia's rare singles and one album may be the greatest single-disc trove of African funk ever released.

(I've been accused of being one before).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/2/18 11:31am Funky16Corners:

This Clifford Coulter track is either a rip off of something else or was itself ripped off. It reminds me of a Hammond 45 (the title/artist of which escapes me right now)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/2/18 11:33am JtotheK:

@NGH - since goo(ey); could that in turn be followed by 'chewy chewy'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/2/18 11:34am JtotheK:

@Doug - what is Clifford's relation to fellow drummer DJ Tony?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/2/18 11:37am Funky16Corners:

This Roy Lee Johnson is great. Another one for the want list.

Little Buster!!!
Avatar    Fri. 3/2/18 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

This number has echoes of A Change Is Gonna Come (in my head it does)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/2/18 11:48am Funky16Corners:

Little Buster was a goddamned genius. It's a disgrace that his stuff hasn't been given a solid, well researched compilation.
