@David sorry to miss your show but the week caught up with me early.
See you played Souad Massi, Deb is one of my favourite albums. She seems to have gone a bit western recently recording a track with Paul Weller.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 8:53am David D:

Hi Brian, yes, Souad Massi is fantastic - can never be played enough! The track with Paul Weller is lovely as well.

Hey there, Stanley!

$75 or more will get you automatically and without further ado the amazing CD compilation of the Best of Give the Drummer Radio!

You are co'rre'ct, hyde.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

Hey, put out the Waterford crystal. MR C IS HERE!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:30am hyde:

i don't mean to be diacritical
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:31am David D:

Yes the Marie Rottrová track is about love having a thousand faces. These types of "translations" are often sort of "readaptations" to say the least.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:31am Scraps:

Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:32am melinda:

Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:33am David D:

Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:39am David D:

Next prize up for grabs (pledges $20 or more): The Washington Phillips and His Manzarene Dreams CD+Booklet playing right now...
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:40am Scraps:

Is it all Christian?
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:40am David D:

Okay, the booklet isn't playing, I don't think.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

Let me yank a few wires and see if I can play the booklet. Actually, it's 76-page hardcover book!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:42am David D:

Here is a link to the Washington Phillips:
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:42am David D:

Those hardcovers sound the best - just drop a hard needle on it.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:46am hyde:

it's so true. i give money to a bunch of worthy nature type non-profits, and it constantly annoys me how many extra solicitations they send me. i'm already a member! stop harassing me! spend your money on conservation!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:48am Jeff Golick:

"If you like Brazilian music..." aka "If you like music"
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:49am David D:

Next prize available to pledges $20 or over: Novos Baianos - Acabou Chorare (CD), as can be heard right about now...
  Fri. 3/10/17 9:49am Lore:

Thanks again & always for all the education & inspiration, Doug!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

Inspiration is a two-way street, dear Lore.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:50am Brian in UK:

@hyde I got the same with Wateraid, after asking them to desist it seems to have worked. Preaching to the converted.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:50am David D:

Or to summarize winners will be drawn for the following three items in just a few minutes!

Hawai'i Authentic The Pre-War Era Vol.2 (1927-1936) (LP)
Washington Phillips Box Set/Book (CD Box Set)
Novos Baianos Acabou Chorare (CD)
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:51am David D:

The Box Set there refers to the largish hardcover book
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:52am Brian in UK:

David trust you are wearing a suitably sparkly getup.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:52am hyde:

@Brian what i want is a simple opt out, like an "i will never give you money beyond the annual fee, so don't waste money on mail" box
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:53am David D:

Brian: That would be a first! But if it helps...
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:53am Jeff Golick:

Whenever I hear Phillips now I think, "Dylan *must've* heard this dude."
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:54am Brian in UK:

Jeff you read my mind, something in the intonation.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:55am Jeff Golick:

Yeah. The whole gestalt, really.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:55am Webhamster Henry:

Hi drummer somers! Nice show and his morning. Washington Phillips is always welcome, as is anything Brazilian.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:56am Webhamster Henry:

My computer is crashy so I'm tapping this on on my iPad.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:56am Brian in UK:

Dylan listened to the Anthology of American Folk Music which covers '27 - '30. Not sure if WP was present.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 9:59am David D:

Last chance for the first batch of giveaways. $20 or more to be in the running:
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:00am Brian in UK:

Listening blind you would be pushed to take this for Hawai'i.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:00am David D:

Could have been homesick Texan transplants.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:01am David D:

Although the accents do not add up.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:06am Brian in UK:

Stand up for Middle Volta.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:06am listener james from westwood:

It ain't a party until the Black Lodge Singers herald a mouse pledge!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:08am David D:

Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:13am David D:

And next prize up for $20 pledge-grabs:

Liquid Liquid: Optimo (LP)
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:13am βrian:

I'm still wiping the sleep from my eyes. Good morning, Drummer Givers.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:14am David D:

Good morning, βrian!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

Here, βrian, have some Liquid Liquid to wipe it away.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:19am βrian:

Coffee in hand, loving the A & M. I read they were school yard sweethearts.
  Fri. 3/10/17 10:20am Listener Robert:

One thing you might want to do to save fundraising cost -- maybe you've thought of this already -- is to not send physical mail solicitations to those who've been donating exclusively electronically.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:20am David D:

Where's that pledge link again? Oh here it is...
  Fri. 3/10/17 10:23am Listener Robert:

I used to send checks, but in recent years only PayPal, and thought that if you responded to the trend, you might save by not physically mailing the solicitation. Of course it's possible some donors may go back to checks, or may keep a physical mail address and change e-mail address, but I don't know whether that justifies a routine letter mailing.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:24am Lewis:

and it is 924 in the central time zone, the ground is frozen once again and the sun is shining..
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:24am Brian in UK:

I think Manu Chao made Amadou & Mariam sound too Western and rocky when I saw them, gone back to basics more now.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
The poobahs at the station have debated this. They understand the cost of physical mailings, but at this point I think they feel it is still critical to reach everyone possible. That is my understanding of the issue.

Oh, and Good Morning!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy, Lewis! All snow-covered here in Pittsburgh after a 60°F day yesterday.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:27am Brian in UK:

You know what it is like people like to have a hard copy in their hands (stop sniggering at the back).
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:27am Little Danny:

Go Doug go Doug!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:27am Andrew Waterloo:

I could make it an opt out question in the member profile.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:28am βrian:

17°F and bright blue skies over the isthmus today. Sunbathed cat at my feet, working from home.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:28am melinda:

I like getting the mailing.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:29am David D:

Next prize revelation (in more ways than one):
Owiny Sigoma Band - Nyanza (CD)
  Fri. 3/10/17 10:29am Listener Robert:

The poobahs might try a controlled experiment, half & half, but they may consider it too risky.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for the pledge, Andrew Waterloo!

@Listener Robert
We are nothing if not risk averse. We are pioneering and innovative, but risk averse.
  Fri. 3/10/17 10:31am Listener Robert:

But it did get me that membership card, which I can use at Monty Hall if & when they ever try selling liquor as a private club.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:31am βrian:

Sometimes you gotta risk a verse. Love letters come to mind.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:31am Andrew Waterloo:

I like getting the mailing too, but I'll go online to read the information on the brochure while holding the brochure. But, I also understand the value of that physical connection with the mailing. Not something fans of vinyl can argue against.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:32am Jesse K:

Morning all!
  Fri. 3/10/17 10:32am Listener Robert:

DS, that doesn't doesn't describe Field Marshal Freedman at all. If it does, it's a side of him I'm unaware of.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:32am David D:

Hey, Jesse!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:33am βrian:

If Monty Hall were in Wisconsin, they'd have a liquor license in a New York minute.
  Fri. 3/10/17 10:33am Listener Robert:

Instead they're in NJ, & it's taking a Wisconsin minute.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:34am Lewis:

well played Listener Robert!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:35am βrian:

Lewis, you are a philanthropic force of nature!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, Jesse Kamoutsky!
  Fri. 3/10/17 10:36am Listener Robert:

What I meant, Doug, is that had I been thrust into Ken's position 30 yrs. ago, I'd've immediately set to cutting things back because we couldn't afford what we were doing. Instead he took a good deal of risks, and the results are before us.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:37am βrian:

Ach, Crazy Time begins on Sunday! Makes me sleepy already.
  Fri. 3/10/17 10:37am Listener Robert:

With me we probably would've quickly been down to carrier current AM in Upsala's bldgs., & then gone completely when the college went down.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:38am David D:

Pledge $20 to be in this hour's drawing for Owiny Sigoma and Liquid Liquid - $75 to automatically get the Give the Drummer Radio compilation CD and to be in the grand prize drawing!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:40am melinda:

Nice selection, Mayuko.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:43am Uncle Michael:

Third Man gets any cooler and I might start liking Jack White.
  Fri. 3/10/17 10:44am Dean:

"Demotica" is Greek for "garage." And that WTMAB record is killer.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:45am David D:

And here are all three items for this hour's drawing:

Why The Mountains Are Black: Primeval Greek Village Music 1907-1960 (2 LP)
Owiny Sigoma Band - Nyanza (CD)
Liquid Liquid: Optimo (LP)
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

Heya, Dean the Translator!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:45am Alex In Illinois:

WFMU fund drives and college radio fund drives are so much more fun than the Fund drives of any NPR station.
Fri. 3/10/17 10:46am Bruce in Boston:

Love this sh*t
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:46am listener james from westwood:

The audacious wisdom of buying the frequency in the mid-90s before Upsala College could sell it to non-freeform hands should never be taken lightly. It enabled so much.
Fri. 3/10/17 10:48am Dave in Vermont on the phone:

I dare say that was a little ecstatic
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:48am Lewis:

The largest single donation I have ever made was part of buying that license... money well given!
  Fri. 3/10/17 10:49am Dean:

I wonder whether there's a record store somewhere in this land called No More Records...
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:50am Artie Haywire:

The soul freezing horror of this "No More Records" song!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:50am Lewis:

It is not hyperbole to say that the money I give to WFMU is at least as responsible for my quality of, and success in, life as money I have spent on a shrink.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:51am Carmichael:

Heya Doug and drumbos. The best of luck marathoning!
  Fri. 3/10/17 10:51am Jeff g.:

Shaving to GTDR, as I'm doing now = one of my happy places.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:52am David D:

Thanks, Carmichael!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:54am Uncle Michael:

Lewis, I'm going to start signing off with "I'm afraid our time is up".
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:55am Lewis:

unimaginable sounds have become common place in my life thanks to GTDS and WFMU.
  Fri. 3/10/17 10:55am Dean:

When he promised "a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage," Hoover was under the influence of Kalymnikos Issos.
  Fri. 3/10/17 10:56am Dean:

So sorry to hear this about Tony!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

New slogan alert:

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO: A chicken in every garage!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 10:57am David D:

This ZNR is great - need to know more...
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:00am Little Danny:

That ZNR track was sublime!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:01am listener james from westwood:

Favorite quote from a marathon past, not one during Tony C's shift: "There are songs out there whose Google results only come from Tony Coulter's playlists."
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

Sublime knows sublime, Little Danny!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:04am hyde:

my reason is basically that i wouldn't know what to do if there weren't no wfmu
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:04am Kris Holmes:

woohoo, MJH, Mr & Mrs Holmes singing along in bed over morning coffee to this.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

Big love to all the Holmeses!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:06am Kris Holmes:

baby baby baby baby!!!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:06am Alex In Illinois:

The combination of music on this show is reason enough. But, this interactive listener community, and the other shows on the Drummer stream kind of pushes things over the top.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

All roads lead to Tony, Listener James. Tis so true.
  Fri. 3/10/17 11:07am Listener Robert:

James, I now have a comparison for that transition: the purchase of WNTI, Centenary College, to U. of Penn, who affiliated with NPR. Now their staff has essentially re-formed as Newt Radio on stream. They had the good fortune to have been ousted at a time when streaming audio was already a thing, and a friend who was a supporter of the arts who'd recently purchased the Newton Theatre. But would streaming even have been such a thing now had it not been for WFMU? Yeah, probably, but may have taken years longer.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:09am Stanley:

I always prefer it with the fuzz
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:09am Andrew Waterloo:

Not just a place to discover music, but also a community of music enthusiasts who are dedicated to discovering, sharing, and cataloging every nook and cranny of music imagined or not.
  Fri. 3/10/17 11:09am Dean:

Programmed properly (e.g., this GTD stream) (web-)radio is a medium for communication of information, knowledge, and most importantly enthusiasm about stuff that matters. Totally agree with Alex in IL @11:06.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:10am Uncle Michael:

True fact: KJHK at the University of Kansas was the first radio station online (not first college station...first station), though UNC disputes this. And yes, KJHK is just another sucky college station now.
  Fri. 3/10/17 11:10am Jeff g.:

I am now without fuzz.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:11am Jesse K:

If I may...This great sega song is also on my premium called Name That Name That: Songs that namecheck their own genre
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:12am Artie Haywire:

Jeff G: Insert fuzz pedal between pre-amp and power amp sections of your radio receiver rig. So much fuzz. Everything fuzz. Make interactive with fuzz/wah. Yip!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:12am βrian:

UNC meaning Univ of North Carolina, right? Not the Man from U.N.C.le Michael.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

You absolutely may, Jesse K!
  Fri. 3/10/17 11:13am Dean:

Recently put my money where my yammering mouth is when I subscribed after decades of deprivation to Fanfare ("The Magazine for Serious Record Collectors"). Like WFMU's best, it is both an education and an inspiration. The reviewers are hella smart and knowledgeable. Better, one quickly learns what they like, what they don't, and why.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:13am David D:

There are so many reasons to support this station, stream, and this show in particular. I almost hesitate to mention the great prizes that are available this hour, but I will...

Amanaz Africa (2CD)

Soul Sok Sega: Sega Sounds from Mauritius1973-79 (CD)
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:15am David D:

And that's for pledges $20 and over - for $75 you automatically get the Give the Drummer Radio compilation CD, and are in the drawing for Bobo Yeye : Belle Epoque in Upper Volta (3 CD Box

Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:17am Lewis:

no, the threat is unambiguously existential ;-))
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:17am Kris Holmes:

The Bobo Yeye box is incredible, Numero sent me the vinyl box when it came out & it blew me away, it was all new to me & fantastic. The photos in the book are incredible, the backstory is bananas & the music is outstanding!!!!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:18am Kris Holmes:

The Marathon from Marathon
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:18am David D:

Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

You are never alone when you're with Kris Holmes. Because, like, Kris is with you. Right there. But also metaphorically. too.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:20am Kris Holmes:

we are now out of bed dancing around the bedroom to Clifton heh
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:21am David D:

Sun just beginning to set here, music works for all times of day.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

Give the Drummer Some, driving couples out of bed since 1987.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:23am Kris Holmes:

hahaha, totally, slow start to the day
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:24am Lewis:

@Doug - so if I do the math, GTDS must be up to about 20 DJs...!?
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:26am doctorjazz:

Late arrival, I'll take my demerits (Stoopid meeting...)
Go Drummers!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

Right around there, Lewis!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:26am David D:

Marathon or no marathon, I'm enjoying this set!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:27am Alex In Illinois:

We just need about 10.13 more people to pledge $75 each. Or maybe 10 people to pledge $75, and one to pledge $10.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:27am Lewis:

(and of course you really only need the average song length to 3.5 min (equally music and nerd hear))
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:29am David D:

Hey, doctorjazz!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:29am Uncle Michael:

Please join me at the top of the hour, with or without your wallets (but if I'm being honest, preferably with).
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:30am Uncle Michael:

Yes to your question, Brian.

My dear colleague Irwin!

The check is not in the mail. It's already in Auricle's bank acct.
Fri. 3/10/17 11:36am Joshua in Richmond:

Thanks for the shout-out. I'm looking forward this premium. We listen at our house because the main WFMU stream sometimes just needs to be turned off. This stream is next in line; it's consistent; and it sometimes even has kwela.
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:37am listener james from westwood:

Whoo-hoo! Way to go, pledgers! Way to go, Doug!!
  Fri. 3/10/17 11:37am Dean:

I always admired Tamil script, so much that when I'd vacation as a kid with my parents I'd hunt down the Gideon's bible in the hotel room to find the array of scripture translated into various languages, including Tamil.

Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

I just changed to goal to reflect the $10,000 threshold. I'm not moving the goalposts. I just want to display the magnificence of a $10,000 goal. MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!!

arriving (very) late, but in time for Curtis and Move on Up. Hi everyone!
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:52am Brian in UK:

Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:52am Kris Holmes:

move on up is so great
Avatar Fri. 3/10/17 11:52am Dave in Vermont:
