Really quite depressed....have to convince my 18 year old it isn't the end of the world (and not 100% convinced of it...).
Avatar 8:42am annie:

logging in...and there's this, which may be true... or not: Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore be incapable of fighting in the future.

This famous weapon was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as "plucking the yew" (or "pluck yew").

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, "See, we can still pluck yew! PLUCK YEW!

Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodental fricative 'F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute are mistakenly thought to have something to do with an intimate encounter.

It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as "giving the bird."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am ɨӄɛ:

Also, he's sober and doesn't appreciate such things. (I hate that he's giving alcohol-free people a bad name.) And the "Twitter wars" are the symptom pointing to the disease that will lead to more REAL wars.
  9:48am Listener Robert:

Ike, if that were true, there'd be a lot more violence among Twitter users already. The Internet's a way of blowing off steam that probably makes people less violent, if anything.

And Drumpf has clearly become more conservative in his old age, plus you can't take his words at face value -- he's held every possible position on a number of issues. @Doug I can't imagine him winning wither - there's always a "what if" - but Trump stayed away from attacks on Bernie - I think there would have been such a barrage of attacks had he gotten the nomination - that he clearly would have lost
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am melinda:

bob, yeah. I support the congressional reps who are boycotting it and those who are attending, same with those watching or not watching. I don't thing there's one proper response, and whether we like it or not, it's a historical moment.

I am so incredibly proud of my congressman, Mike Doyle. He represents southwestern Pennsylvania and is boycotting the inauguration. Not an simple political stance to take.

  11:16am Dean:

@βrian and @annie: Do it, please! I have fond memories of a now defunct cafe in Montreal in the days before streaming of music. They left random CDs around the place and let the patrons request them, a kind of human jukebox. I remember requesting--and their playing--the Hilliard Ensemble's Gesualdo Tenebrae. Was perfect.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:16am Alex In Illinois:

How about no TVs, and the only music being un-amplified and acoustic, and if it is loud or involves singing, then in the back-room.

@βrian: No, the '90s for me. I can't remember the name of the place. I think it lasted only two or three years. It was in the touristy Vieux-Montréal area. Never caught HE live, but I make a point to collect their recordings.

First thing I tell my daughter when she gets an owie on her finger is "Give me the finger, sweetie."

SNAP has been in a bit of trouble under the outbound regime. Seems proposed USDA regulations aimed at strengthening the criteria for qualifying food products risked eliminating qualified vendors, an unintended consequence.

@annie: For sure, but I think the regs treat a well-stocked mini-market and the adjacent fast food chain franchise as a single business. Current regs don't permit sales of hot food that exceed some threshold, and the proposed ones lower that threshold, iirc.
