Hello Doug. Woke up this morning with five hundred kittens sitting on my chest wanting their dinner. Rough or what. Still got to work to spread the joy.
Youngest daughters' birthday today, so let's have some JOY.
Avatar Fri. 1/20/17 8:31am Doug Schulkind:

Really quite depressed....have to convince my 18 year old it isn't the end of the world (and not 100% convinced of it...).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/20/17 8:42am annie:

logging in...and there's this, which may be true... or not: Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore be incapable of fighting in the future.

This famous weapon was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as "plucking the yew" (or "pluck yew").

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, "See, we can still pluck yew! PLUCK YEW!

Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodental fricative 'F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute are mistakenly thought to have something to do with an intimate encounter.

It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as "giving the bird."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/20/17 8:45am doctorjazz:

Don't know if it's true or not, but it's a great story!

I hope you don't consider it spam for me to repeat here what I just commented on the contemporaneous McSorley playlist page: that I'd been thinking since the election what I heard yesterday at the clinic in the waiting room: a hunch that a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised by Trump.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/20/17 9:25am Brian in UK:

Let Luna see the tracks. That would be mad.
Avatar Fri. 1/20/17 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

For one thing, Trump might not save up his pardons & commutations until he's on the way out the door, like Obama now & most presidents of recent times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/20/17 9:30am Ike:

I just tuned in and heard "When That Hell Bomb Falls" and figured the theme was nuclear war.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/20/17 9:31am doctorjazz:

Same thought, if we're not in a major disaster, it will be better than most expect. (There is a pretty good chance Trump will be out at some point, so many conflicts of interest, not that Pence is a big bargain...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/20/17 9:32am Stanley:

Johnny Paycheck - The Cave came on the random car player, earlier... followed, happily, by Nat Gonella and Black Coffee - I love Nat Gonella!
Avatar Fri. 1/20/17 9:33am Doug Schulkind:

The randomly selected music is so good. I'm beginning to think I am superfluous.
     Fri. 1/20/17 9:33am Listener Robert:

We might also not have 2 or 3 more shooting wars within his 1st quarter in office, as I was afraid we'd've gotten w H. Clinton.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/20/17 9:35am Brian in UK:

Avatar Fri. 1/20/17 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

ndbob! Happy belated birthday to you, Sir!
     Fri. 1/20/17 9:40am Listener Robert:

That last bit's very important to me. I'm working with someone to bring a biological to market, and it looks like we're going to start in Mexico. I think in the coming admin. we'll have a better chance to get it to the USA.
     Fri. 1/20/17 9:41am Listener Robert:

Trump over the past 25 yrs. repeatedly came out for legaliz'n of narcotics. Meanwhile Hillary said you could never legalize marijuana because there's too much money in it. She'd know all about major flows of $, of course.

Also, he's sober and doesn't appreciate such things. (I hate that he's giving alcohol-free people a bad name.) And the "Twitter wars" are the symptom pointing to the disease that will lead to more REAL wars.
     Fri. 1/20/17 9:48am Listener Robert:

Ike, if that were true, there'd be a lot more violence among Twitter users already. The Internet's a way of blowing off steam that probably makes people less violent, if anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/20/17 9:48am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/20/17 9:48am Artie Haywire:

The results are great, but the metaphor breaks down. Random choice from Doug's library is like picking a random gelato flavor at Luigi's. Wherein the next four years will be more like dropping a jeweler's loupe on a random patch of a Hieronymus Bosch mural.

A dear friend of ours (who used to live at the corner of President and Clinton streets in Brooklyn) wrote her doctoral dissertation on Willa Cather. I share that mostly to get in the President Clinton thing.
