I owe, I owe,
It's off to work I go.
With an aching head
From a nice warm bed.
So let's bring on the show.

Just finished stacking my teeter pile of goodies. Oh what joy shall engulf us!

Now that's a shuffle!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 8:42am Doug Schulkind:

Hey, Thelonious, you will be performing during today's broadcast! You better have your fingers gargle with warm lemon water.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 8:48am doctorjazz:

Hey, Hi all! Went to a great show in Manhattan last night (don't get around weeknights much anymore...), great show! Ben Allison, trio called "The Easy Way", album release "party" with Steve Cardenas on guitar and Ted Nash tenor sax and clarinet, drumless trio tribute to Jimmy Giuffre and Jim Hall. Great set at Smoke (Nash is great, gave edge to what could have been a polite sound). (end of mini review)
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 8:52am Doug Schulkind:

You had me at "Giuffre," doctorjazz! Good morning!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 9:15am Brian in UK:

@doctorjazz briefly harking back to Phil Ochs last Monday. I believe I linked an album which really pleased and surprised me how he was holding it together considering that he took his life only three years later. If you would like a copy let me know.

@doctorjazz that Giuffre/Hall tribute sounds aces. have been repeat listening to Giuffre's The Train and the River over the last couple weeks, great LP.

@Brian in UK-that would be great, so nice, thanks! (9:15 post)
I had heard last week on Bob Brainen's show that Steve Bernstein was going to guest, I thought it would just be one of these interviews, though, have to be sure to hear what he programs as guest host, psyched!

Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

Wow, Alex. That makes you a jazz wizard then?!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

Whose Spanish accent is worse, Jennifer Jones' or Nat King Cole's?
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 9:43am Thelonious Funk:

This is definitely sung in Turkish. I was in Ankara about 2 months ago.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 9:50am Alex In Illinois:

Didn't Armand Assante have a bad Cuban accent in the Mambo Kings? I would not know, but every Spanish speaker I knew at the time said so.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 9:51am βrian:

Oh, the gravity is high today. I barely made it.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 9:51am Thelonious Funk:

Hello holland oats!

@Doug Exactly, that's the instrument right there.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 9:53am βrian:

John Banner had an atrocious Spanish accent. Sounded almost Austrian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 9:53am Brian in UK:

Are they building a third Bosphorus Bridge to completely bypass Istanbul?
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 9:54am βrian:

(Not Asturian.)
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 9:54am Alex In Illinois:

I would be surprised, because didn't they just spend a lot on a new Presidential Palace?
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

@Doug hahahahahaha, I forgive you. proceed :D
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:00am Alex In Illinois:

David Sedaris did a review of one of those "Ballpark Buddy" devices. I found that playing a Fela Anikulapo Kuti number would give me time to run to the restroom to relieve myself.

Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

OK, I feel MUCH better.

@Jeff Golick
Are you kidding? That rooster IS royalty. This is being performed at the Royal Roost. (Can't you hear Bird in the background?)
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:08am Thelonious Funk:

What about the crickets from last years show? Last year I clearly remember listening to a Korean folk song on the show and there was lots of crickets chirping, it was very soothing. More animals in studios please or more microphones outside!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:09am listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 10:13am Mark the Sardine:

Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:14am Jeff Golick:

good morning drummers, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 10:16am Brian in UK:

Marimba = languid
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

I adore recordings with the ambient sounds of everyday life in the back/foreground. Roosters, crickets, crying children.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

What languid are you speaking, Brian in UK?

Great morning, Flash Strap, Admiral to the Otherworld!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:19am βrian:

Here's a napkin, in case you want to play ketchup, annie.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:21am Jeff Golick:

The first recording I thought of when reading "ambient sounds of everyday life" was Jim Carroll asking for a Tuinol on VU's Live at Max's.
Avatar    Fri. 10/21/16 10:21am hyde:

really getting down to the nitty gritty on this packing. anyone need a random pile of foreign coins? some old floppy disks? perhaps some dark corn syrup that expired in 2013?
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:22am Jeff Golick:

I'll trade you, @hyde, this ancient, opened, partial box of lasagne noodles for the corn syrup.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:22am βrian:

I could use some bubble wrap to help relieve stress. These ketchup packets are messy.

Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:29am Jeff Golick:

There's a recent book on that pygmy, Ota Benga, that I've wanted to read:
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:29am Thelonious Funk:

@Doug Rolling my sleeves up, gargling fingers with warm lemon water.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:29am Alex In Illinois:

I guess showing Pygmies in a zoo is worse than having them on exhibition at the World's Fair, along with various other peoples on display.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 10:30am Brian in UK:

Doug, I am sure he was not referring to the zoo but a W H Auden quote from the mid Twentieth Century got my attention. "We haunt a ruined century".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 10/21/16 10:33am Artie Haywire:

Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of Artie Haywire, it's Artie Haywire!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:35am Jeff Golick:

Agreed, @Mr C. I've spent a lot of time looking around that cover.

Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 10:36am Thelonious Funk:

Harkness' anarchy period really had petered out by the time I got there. I didn't seem like a mess to me. But then, I was never in a leadership position. Just a rank-and-filer.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome aboard, mauri!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

I have no idea how this track found its way into my collection for this sequence. A complete accident. I am not unhappy in the least, but confused to be sure.

So, if there were shrimp boats in the offing to follow the African jag; my cold that has me sounding like a voiceover person would be instantly soothed.

One wonders if the students at the University of Texas are getting any trigger warnings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 11:14am Brian in UK:

hey mauri have you just come out into the sunlight from the sauna?

Wonder if keel-hauling was an early form of waterboarding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 11:15am doctorjazz:

Nice Angel Eyes!
  Fri. 10/21/16 11:15am βrian:

Oy! I would hate to be at UT, these days!
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 11:16am Thelonious Funk:

Amazing track.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

Hey, can we nudge the pledge thermometer past 15%? Because I can't peek inside the machine, I don't know what the goal is, so I can give you a dollar figure to shoot for. But if you haven't donated yet to WFMU, please consider it a solemn responsibility of public spiritedness to do so.

The alto player is the all-time all-world genius, Kippie Moeketski.

This Bongos Ikwue is the same Bongos Ikwue who provided the track "Show Me a Virgin in a Maternity Ward," on my "African Twang" marathon premium.
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 11:23am Jason Elbogen:

So, Doug I guess--from your comments I just read--that we're all still in the dark about pledges?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 11:24am Brian in UK:

Doug, guessing your total is around $2500.
Peanuts, folks. Cough up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 10/21/16 11:24am Brian in UK:

Channels dipping in and out, anyone else?
Avatar Fri. 10/21/16 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

In the deep dark, Jason. I am so sorry. Ken has sent me the names of some pledgers to some shows, but not yours. And the names he sent he sent last week. So only the shadow knows at this point.

The shadow could pledge, though. I'm just sayin'.

I ope everyone has their next dental appointment made before joining me for a three hour trip to Bubblegum Island at the top of the hour. Following Doug's musically nutritious meal, I'm offering junk for dessert.

Uncle Michael will treat you right, left, up, down, in, out. In fact, he will get non-Euclidian on your listening assess! You won't know which way is up when he's done with you! And all for the price of love.

(Noon-3pm, ET)

Jason Elbogen's exquisite offerings will follow at 3pm. He will play music you never knew was possible, let alone existed.

(3-6PM, ET)
