Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 9:43am Parq:

Robert, I don't know this for a stone-cold fact, but my understanding is that all of the money Nachum raises is sent into the general fund, so I assume the station total does include the JMAM pledges. Hava nagila!

  Fri. 3/18/16 9:51am Listener Robert:

I remember close to 40 yrs. ago I was collecting donations in a small group of us for $ to affiliate us with an organiz'n, and suddenly I looked at what I had in my hand & announced we were over the top. I wondered how that happened, & later figured I must've erred by counting some of my own out-of-pocket change making -- like the puzzle about the extra shoes or something.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 9:52am Jeff Golick:

Hey, Doug. Just in time for DSW to soothe my soul.

I know the station needs money; I know you, Doug, have been dealing with some immense family issues; but I just this morning left my iphone on the Long Island Rail Road, so everything is now crap.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of the Brothers Koch, I did a double-take yesterday morning when I heard that Morning Edition on NPR was brought to us, in part, by Koch Industries.

That is some bullshit right there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 9:54am doctorjazz:

Bring it on! Free jazz lives (on FMU!)
(the Ware is actually beautiful!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 9:54am Brian in UK:

Once you click the + it will confirm just below the dropdown that you have pledged to Doug's show.
  Fri. 3/18/16 9:55am Listener Robert:

So that's what I was trying to figure here, i.e. excluding the possibility of double counting. If the total Nachum announced a few mins. ago was just raised today, i.e. none of it having figured already into the thermometers on WFMU's front page, then that's extremely impressive.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 9:57am Listener dc 108581:

They're taking over everything. Anybody see the article over at huffpost about how the Republicans may be planning to run 3rd-part candidate, ensuring no one will get enough electoral votes enabling congress to appoint the president?? THAT shit is scary.
  Fri. 3/18/16 9:57am Listener Robert:

I've met David Koch about 3 times since 1980. He's a fun & interesting guy. We didn't quite overlap in our rugby-playing years in NYC, though.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
Nachum's totals each day do get entered into the pledge thermometer. Not sure if all of his total from today is in yet. Today is the last day of the marathon from JM in the AM, so it's always a huge final push for them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 9:59am Parq:

I would say that if the thermometer jumps perceptibly in the next hour or so, that'll be our answer. As for NPR, I'm not the least bit surprised. On the contrary, I'm sure someone over there passionately argued that it would be unfair and partisan not to take their money.
  Fri. 3/18/16 10:00am Listener Robert:

Thanks, Doug, and yes, I know the pledgers always seem to have a sense of drama & suspense about it, leading to back-loading of the pledge totals on all the shows, not just Nachum's.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:00am listener james from westwood:

NPR is dead. It died to me when its Planet Money segment was sponsored by Goldman Sachs. They started that segment BECAUSE of the mess fucking Goldman Sachs created!

Pledge to radio that is never a mess. (Except for the old Wreck This Mess program.) Pledge to WFMU for radio that is free from the vampire squid and its blood funnel.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:03am Alex In Illinois:

Back in the late 1980's, when I lived inthe NYC area, I used to listen to a show called "Wasted Vinyl". I think it was freeform. It is where I first heard Najima Ahktar and learned about Asha Bosley. I might call it a precursor to Give The Drummer Some.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 10:04am Parq:

Alex, that was Rob Weissberg! He changed the name of the show to Trans Pacific Sound Paradise at some point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 10:04am joe:

'ello folks
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:05am Alex In Illinois:

I forgot to mention to everyone that "Wasted Vinyl" was on WFMU. I think I pledged support during that show. I think I still have an old WFMU listener's guide from back then.
  Fri. 3/18/16 10:05am Listener Robert:

Writing of David Koch reminds me: I was always skeptical about Dave Emory's series, but still found it interesting. I wondered whether he'd ever get around to fingering ME as part of a conspiracy. Not quite, but one day he mentioned people that I knew, and that's when I switched from listening to his show seriously to listening for laughs.
  Fri. 3/18/16 10:06am Mr C:

I would like to belatedly thank Brian in UK for introducing me to my new favorite holiday, World Sleep Day.

Of course, were you to ask my kids, they'd say that for me EVERY day is World Sleep Day. I love to sleep, you see.

Meanwhile, my phone is now headed back under the East River on the LIRR, and the joke's on them because she didn't pay a fare.

Also Thanks for all the great shows over the years.
When I started listening to WFMU many moons ago, I worried that Give The Drummer Some would be nothing but drum solos (such a show could exist on WFMU). I'm glad I overcame my fears.

@Artie Haywire...know the feeling, spreading the Swag-for-life pledge around, but it doesn't feel the same, you know the money is already contributed. Seems silly, but you lose something in the process (but, FMU gains, probably the best way for them to have income stream throughout the year).

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 10:45am Artie Haywire:

Bare-chested, on horseback, and ably herding a field full of variety wildlife.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

Great to see you, Lane Grey! There aren no "wrong" shows, of course, because all the $$$ goes to WFMU. But there is a "right" show, and I'd love it if y'all would pledge "right" now!
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:45am Lane Gray:

I gave twice to Bryce, and just emailed Joe to have him reassign it, to Michael, Doug and Debbie
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:46am Jeff Golick:

Phone-miserating with you, @βrian. The music is helping.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

Yeeks, Jeff Golick!
  Fri. 3/18/16 10:47am βrian:

Ach, for me a phone is really a watch that has the ability to text. A $38 special.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:49am ifny:

Ok ok you got me, I'll pledge again. This album sounds fantastic. What's that phone number again? (Can't use Instapledge from Canada since it doesn't believe in provinces.)
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:49am Jeff Golick:

My main phone uses these days: texting grocery lists; reading political articles; listening to WFMU. Not in that order.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:50am listener james from westwood:

Still waiting for my clients to shake money loose; hoping the morning mail brings $ so I can help UM or even this show if it arrives in time!!
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:52am Lane Gray:

Wfmu has already gotten three times what I gave to KKFI and the station in Knoxville whose call I've forgotten,AND WAMU (I was raised on public and community radio).
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:53am ifny:

Found it. 1-201-413-9368 for the not-in-Americans.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:54am ifny:

Now I'm going to cross my scissors and hope that I win!
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

@ifny
I'm sure you can pledge online from Canada. Others have accomplished it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 10:55am Brian in UK:

@ifny I never need provinces from here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 10:56am Brian in UK:

....just inside leg measurement.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:56am ifny:

@Doug Not when I tried last week -- the drop down menu only gives states, which messes up the billing profile for Canuckistanians. I'm happy for others who succeed where I have failed however!
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

Now atop the playlist page, art from our Grand Prize, EXPEDITION, a book of sumptuous collages by Evan "Flash Strap" Crankshaw. Pledge $75 to be in the running for the grand prize.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:58am ifny:

@Brian Ha! I just measure by the sunrise.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:58am Lane Gray:

Be back in half an hour. ISIHAC awaits
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:58am βrian:

By golly, ifny is right. There's no option to select a province, even when Canada is selected as the country. Wha??
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 10:59am Brian in UK:

@Lane 76 Trombones to the tune of All Things Bright and Beautiful.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 10:59am ifny:

@ βrian: don't say it too loud. You'll ruin my reputation.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 11:01am Lane Gray:

theme music to I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue is from the film Monte Carlo or Bust as an adaptation of Haydn’s Austrian Hymn. It has another name as a jazz tune:
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 11:02am Hugo:

There was a great version of Mathie Grove by Fairport Convention on their Liege & Lief album. I haven't heard this one before.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 11:04am βrian:

I hope all the pledged funds don't have to go toward fixing the web site. What a slurry of offal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/18/16 11:04am Brian in UK:

Hello Hugo, guessing this was recorded a few years before the Fairports.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 11:06am Lane Gray:

"The Schickel Shamble"
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

@Hugo
Mathie Grove has also been recorded with the titles "Lord Daniel's Wife" and "Little Musgrove."
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 11:07am Lane Gray:

Oops. I'd thought you were commenting on the theme. I'm still on my first cup of coffee. That's brilliant
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 11:08am joe:

@ifny don't want to speak for Doug but one option of what you might do is put the correct city in and select any state than leave a note in the comments field that you are in Canada.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 11:10am chromaphone:

I was listening to Fairport Conventions "Matty Groves" just the other day which is great.

Hi guy.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 11:14am Flash Strap:

god her phrasing on this is identical to Porter Wagoner's usual affectations. Sounds exactly like the way he sings "Cassie"

makes sense, of course
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 11:14am ifny:

@Joe I believe the problem with that is that it messes up billing -- you must have the same address that your CC has or it will automatically not approve the submission. So it wouldn't allow the donor to complete the transaction. Although since WFMU's interface is custom, perhaps they customised that plug-in. I didn't get that far so I don't know. But then, it is always a nice excuse to phone in and talk to the super friendly phone volunteers :)

In a novel by Phillip K. Dick, they do shoot down "God". Well, they shoot down an alien satellite that transmits visions to people.

I think the T-Shirts should list the on-line streams on the back, or maybe even the front, so that more people will know that they can listen to WFMU around the world.
Avatar Fri. 3/18/16 11:35am βrian:

I have to say I'm not impressed with the T-shirt this year. I love the simplicity of the Woof-Moo design. So it goes.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/18/16 11:49am Parq:

I realize this is a side point, and overly serious, but I can't let that crack about "so much hate on the left and the right" pass. The notion that the left is motivated by hate as much as the right is bullshit the right dreamed up. They realized that they had gone so far into the realm of childish, hateful behavior that they only way they could save face with America was to spread the lie that both sides are equally as bad.
