If I see a banjo hanging in the window of a music shop on the way home today, and if the store is open, I might end up buying one. My wife said that the sound of practicing banjo or mandolin would not annoy her as much as accordion or concertina.

It's pretty damn cool, that the replacement service is so mobile. If ever one needed one less headache...
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 10:30am Alex In Illinois:

@annie: a cuica is a friction drum. So the sound is not made by striking the surface, but by parts rubbing against each other sort of like a fiddle bow.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 10:31am Gary:

Ha ha ... I remember when I moved from SF to MPLS and the moment when I totally realized it was another culture: At the checkout of a supermarket, the bag boy (an actual bag boy!) asked: "Would you like me to take this out to your car?" I started laughing because (a) it seemed weirdly over-the-top "wholesome" or something at the time and (b) I didn't have a car.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

Dear dear Maggie B. Gulp. Soon to be my only mother.

Hello and welcome, Artie Haywire and chromaphone!

Giant Steps always seems to get the call over Coltrane Jazz which came out just before. I prefer the latter maybe because it was my first JAZZ record.

Dig this lineup:

David Murray - tenor saxophone, bass clarinet
Henry Threadgill - alto saxophone
Olu Dara - trumpet
Lawrence "Butch" Morris - cornet
George Lewis - trombone
Anthony Davis - piano
Wilber Morris - bass
Steve McCall - drums
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/19/16 10:36am doctorjazz:

Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 10:36am Lane Gray:

Hello, Brian!

Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 10:40am still b/p:

Are there musical moments in Ming that recall something from JC Superstar...or has this Trump/Pope thing just got me messed up somehow?

Shirley Scott was married to a sax player: Stanley Turrentine:
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

And the George Lewis trombone solo on Ming was divine. Howdy, still b/p!

Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Scalia loved opera.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 10:54am Lane Gray:

Emmons was a Turrentine buff. Also Stitt (and Jimmies Smith and McGriff), and lifted a famous intro straight from Coltrane
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 10:56am βrian:

Scalia's T-Shirt:

Every dollar an utterance,
every corporation a person,
every citizen a militia.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

Sonny Stitt was a Charlie Parker acolyte (along with a two generations of other sax players). He was called Little Bird in his early days. Switched from alto to tenor to get away from the long shadow.

Doug could you run that one by me again (10:57)
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:04am βrian:

Art Pepper is one of my favorite imperatives.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:07am Flash Strap:

this bed music is amazing
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:08am Doug Schulkind:

Music from your old haunting grounds, St. Louis.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/19/16 11:13am doctorjazz:

Don't think they still make the Squeezebox, company was bought by some company or other.. I have one, but I think here are lots of streaming options out there these days. Chromecast comes to mind...
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:14am glenn:

i want a damon runyon name too.
Avatar    Fri. 2/19/16 11:14am Guido from Cologne:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/19/16 11:15am annie:

Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:15am glenn:

Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:15am Gary:

How groovy is this track?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/19/16 11:16am Carmichael:

Heya Doug and faithful. First day at work this week; I have the worst cold in recorded history.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

This [-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------] groovy.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:17am glenn:

another animal with a drum. this one's cuter and smarter than rob, not that that's difficult.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

See next time, Guidoin Cologne!

Greetings, Carmichael!
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:18am glenn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/19/16 11:20am Mike East:

Just getting over my own cold...and now my two daughters have it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/19/16 11:20am Brian in UK:

Doug, shall I circulate with the Turkish Delight, Baklava & tea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/19/16 11:21am Mike East:

I just ordered some Afghan kebab.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

I am very proud of myself for not playing the wildly wonderful flip side of this record ("Malabadi Köprüsü") which I always end up playing.

@Brian in UK
You should swirl, you dervish you!
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:23am still b/p:

I'm applying many date revision stickers to event signs that I'll be out shtoinking into the (maybe frozen, maybe not) ground at roadsides and intersections shortly. I have to say I'm so glad to have this music for stickering and mental prep for shtoinking.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:25am Lane Gray:

I. Have an ibrik. Turkish/Arabic coffee coming up. I can pronounce the Arabic name but refuse to try to spell it
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Shtoinking? Shtoinking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/19/16 11:26am Uncle Michael:

I hope many of you can make it over to Hinky Dinky Time after Give the Drummer Some. Today we're not spinning, we're twirling.

Shtoinky and Our Gang!
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:28am Lane Gray:

Good morning, Michael. Thinking about a baking steel, especially after most of my pitas failed to poof
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/19/16 11:31am Brian in UK:

@Lane I was given one for Christmas, not christened it yet. The trick is not to boil just keep the liquid foaming.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:31am Lane Gray:

Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:32am βrian:

We saw a wild Turkey in our yard the day after Thanksgiving.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:33am Gary:

Sweet set
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/19/16 11:33am Brian in UK:

Liquid = water + coffee
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:34am Lane Gray:

Oh, you were on the ibrik. Right. Just to the edge of boil. Let cool a bit. Repeat. Serve. My wife spent 14 years married to a Jordanian. My stepson approves of both my coffee and my hummus
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:35am Lane Gray:

Indeed. But my mind had shifted to the baking steel
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/19/16 11:35am Brian in UK:

Lane do you put Sesame oil in the hummus?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/19/16 11:35am Uncle Michael:

Lane, I've made naan but not pita on my steel.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:35am βrian:

Do you go so far as to peel the chick peas? That always struck me as a bit much. Lots of tahini?
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:38am Lane Gray:

Much tahini, as Mrs. Gray loves the sumsum. Use canned chickpeas
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:39am listener james from westwood:

@βrian: One friend of mine peels them, but not sure how widespread it is. She likely wouldn't burn the time if it didn't make a difference. But if it's not for a recipe contest, I say blend'em as is.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michal will be giving personal lessons on shtoinking and other personal hygiene tips on Hinky Dinky Time. Coming up in 20 minutes here on the Drummer Stream. Playlist here:

Off to walk the dawg, drive safely Lane.

Doug, words are useless my friend. Look after yourself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/19/16 11:40am Uncle Michael:

Schtoinking trumps twerking unless it's Trump twerking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/19/16 11:41am Brian in UK:

Doug typo on Michal. Standards old boy.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

This Little Ann number produced by Detroit genius Dave Hamilton.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:42am βrian:

What about Kraftwerking?
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:42am Lane Gray:

No added sesame oil beyond what's in the tahini. Whiz the tahini for a good minute before adding anything else.
  Fri. 2/19/16 11:42am Jeff g.:

I have a belated comment: holding out for Marat/Sade/Trump. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/19/16 11:42am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

Sade will reprise "Smooth Operator" in a duet with Trump at the show's close?
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

Better to shtoink than to symposiate, I always say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/19/16 11:48am Uncle Michael:

better to live to schtoink another day...

Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

Yup. I've got info on other Pittman tracks. Just not "You Hurt Me."

Hey hey hey, it's Ramblin' Ray!
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

And that's Maceo Parker, wailing back in there, of course.
Avatar Fri. 2/19/16 12:01pm listener james from westwood:
