Hahah I'm a hipster about it, @Doug. I'm kinda too young to have really get into cassette, though I did walk around school listening to my tape walkman. I'm still waiting for the CD Renaissance!

UM, I'm of that generation. Also of the generation where you could notch the side of a floppy to use the flip side. We jam econo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/10/15 9:07am Uncle Michael:

I preferred cassettes with shells that screwed together so that I could affect repairs as needed.
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

So many times, I got out my mini-Philips head screwdriver and opened up a cassette to detangle the tape and reassemble. It almost always worked. I LOVED cassettes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:09am ausmanx:

home taping is killing music, they told us...
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Why is that ausmanx, the feller whose pledge put WFMU over the top in reaching its goal? Why, yes. Yes it it!
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:10am Van in DC:

Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:12am Van in DC:

beats me :)
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:12am Doug Schulkind:

Nice, Van! My wife and daughter gave me an iPod for my birthday almost 10 years ago. Dirty little secret: I never touched it. I'm just not an iPod kind of guy. I don't have a single MP3 on my iPhone either. I'm a weirdo.
Avatar    Fri. 4/10/15 9:12am duke:

@Van finding any particular song may be a problem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:13am doca:

I like having music on the phone for when I'm not at home or exercising or stuff like that. But I don't know if music was really made to be listened when you're hurrying on the street.

Morning!
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:14am Evan in NC:

@duke I had a hard enough time ff'ing and rw'ing to find a track on my 90 min cassettes. Wore most of them out that way

Morning all...
So Doug, when you are planning for a show, do you listen to tape or vinyl mostly?
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:17am Evan in NC:

Hi there! They made the kiddos come back a day early from Spring Break because of the blizzards of '15 and my first period is doing a silent (and invisible) protest. I've got two hours to listen to your show! Thanks, truants!
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome V Priceless and Frank from VT!

@Frank
I don't even have a working cassette player right now. So that answers that question. #embarrassed
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/10/15 9:18am Brian in UK:

Howdy Doug 'n sound hounds. I was playing a mixtape only last night. Idris Mohammed aka Bill Evans, Stacy Lattishaw & Johnny Gill.
@ausmanx, yes hometaping is killing music. I still love that phrase.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/10/15 9:19am Brian in UK:

Doug that last station check sounded pre-recorded.
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

I hope you are making them listen to these not-too-Taylor-Swiftian selections!

It's Brian in UK in the (virtual) flesh!
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:19am Van in DC:

I actually still do have a combo radio / cassette / CD player I use daily at home
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

I hope you don't think I'm a joik for playing these next three tracks...
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:20am Van in DC:

It's probably older than some FMU listeners :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:20am ausmanx:

i don't have ipod or phone either, Doug. but did buy one of those USB cassette players to play old tapes. Chris Forsyth's PEEESSEYE had a six-tape monster which was just too essential... as for killing music, of course downloading is supposedly killing music now, and it's the same corporations complaining about it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:21am Parq:

Hey, all. Miss cassettes too, although I still have a player, yet don't use them any more. Tried making mix CDs a couple of times, but it's just not the same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:21am Parq:

Uncle M @ 9:02: Rat own.
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:22am listener james from westwood:

When I worked in an office that couldn't get WFMU in any format, my iPod was vital to filling in the gap. I downloaded FMU archives and threw them onto the iPod, then listened whenever. So much better than listening to other commuters or coworkers.
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:22am chromaphone:

Love the sound of cassettes. So warm and inviting. Been digitizing a slew of recordings of another fav radio show from a while back and the warmth seems to translate decently to CD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:23am Hugo:

Tapes are still big in Africa. I have a small collection from Kenya and Malawi. Back when I was living in Thailand, cassettes were the medium. CDs were quite expensive, but things have changed since then. I do have an Ipod, too. Anyone remembering the minidisc recorder? I have two of those.
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:24am Van in DC:

This music is poifect for the blooming cherry blossoms and magnolias and dogwoods here
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

Yo yo yo, Parq! And hey-O, chromaphone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/10/15 9:24am Brian in UK:

Anyone remember the bootleg Thomson Tapes around the Middle East.
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:25am Van in DC:

8 tracks were awesome. Right in the middle of a song - kaTHUNK

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:25am ausmanx:

Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

Yo-hoo, Waterloo!

Nice hearing that dog barking at the end of that marimba piece! I love those "real life" sounds underlying field recordings.

@ausmanx
I, well, I really wouldn't, um, know about that.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/10/15 9:31am Brian in UK:

The tunes are somewhat fractured. Thirty seconds of Steve Earle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:32am Andrew Waterloo:

I was hoping that story ended with a math related punchline.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:32am ausmanx:

i suspect if i lived to 100 i'd want to kill people too. as for Richie, Brian, it was a good innings but of course it's all quite ludicrous the way they're carrying on about it over here, like he was the most important person who ever lived. i mean, even Bradman was just a guy who hit a ball with a stick
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:32am Van in DC:

I thought you were playing country on purpose...
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:33am d¢ pät:

Hello! And hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/10/15 9:33am Uncle Michael:

i'm not crazy about steve solo, but with the dukes, it's a great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:35am Webhamster Henry:

Good morning Doug - I still have a lot of cassettes - mostly airchecks of old , pre archive WFMU shows. I also used to record a lot, and have a pair of binaural mics-in-the headphones that I could walk around town with and capture an eerie, "you are there" quality with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:36am Webhamster Henry:

Mr. Tony Coulter has a regular "played off cassette" Tape Hiss feature of his GTDS show.
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:36am still b/p:

Listening to an old bargain cassette of Tony Bennett's 50s - 60s hits on my Easter ride outa town...when it suddenly occurred to me,"Oh, there's probably a Dolby button on this (very infrequently used) player." Made a remarkable difference, but ya know, for that tape, I could go either way, hiss-wise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/10/15 9:37am Uncle Michael:

I'll probably miss Steve and the Dukes again. The timing isn't optimal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:37am doca:

@Henry: You should pass some of those recorded shows to WFMU to extend its archives
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:38am Parq:

James @ 9:22. My iPod -- an old school 180G rotating disc one -- is still essential to car trips. Haven't listened to the radio in a car in years, except once in a while when I'm passing through WFMU's signal area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/10/15 9:38am Hugo:

@Doug: joik correctly pronounced. As for Hætta, it is pronounced as Hatta - hat-ta.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/10/15 9:39am Brian in UK:

Doug, I think some of the first set got lost in a Wormhole.
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for the tip, Hugo!

Being in the wormhole with all of you is a nice place to be.
  Fri. 4/10/15 9:41am Mark Williams:

I think Brian in UK might be right, Doug. I think what was playing wasn't at all what you had listed. Mind you, it all sounded fine. Fancy that.
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:43am ndbob:

nice first set there Doug!
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

@Mark Williams
Yah, the stream booted me off during the Steve Earle track and started playing John D. Foster's "Taylor's Quicks." Then AndrewC saved the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/10/15 9:44am Brian in UK:

See my comment at 9:19 it sounded like the 24 hour stream. As Mark wrote it was all good, just confusing.

There have been thunderstorms in the area here for the past 12 hours. The lights have flickered a few times. I'm guessing that a teensy power outage was the culprit.

  Fri. 4/10/15 9:48am Mark Williams:

I used to listen to WTOP non-stop as a kid. Back when it was on AM, of course. At 11pm (or was it midnight), CBS Radio Mystery Theater came on, followed by Larry King's brilliant call-in show. (Yes, Larry King was brilliant back then.)

honestly, you have to wonder why people would insist on establishing a major city, by which i mean winnipeg, on a big ass flood plain, especially when they're told [admittedly by the natives, who they always ignored] that it flooded every year.

Weirdly, from the IMDB description: " the seeming absent-mindedness and dim-wittedness of the Columbo character has been replaced with an unsatisfying and pronounced arrogance"

yeah that whole episode is just wrong. it's even worse than the description. I don't remember him being arrogant so much as the whole thing having a garish slapstick vibe, with Columbo being tailed by bumbling assistants and everyone running into each other constantly. And of course, there's a twist halfway through, in total violation of the formula, which is fine as an idea, but doesn't work at all in practice.

I have to tell you that my show has two points of synchronicity with Doug's today...so far.

We had Lou Jacobi over once for Rosh Hashana dinner - my parents had met him at the train station in Baltimore
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 11:50am still b/p:

That was great..Steinski: perfect partner/froster for the documentary...except the doc lets Frank say "fuck" here and there, which makes me tremble and scream like a teenager at the Paramount .
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

@Parq
You've got the Friday Morning Fever.
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 11:52am chromaphone:

Re: Frank and "fuck," my brother and I took my parents to a Frank concert at Universal Studios around the time of "New York, New York." Opening act was a comedian well known from appearances on daytime and nighttime TV talk shows. He was frigging filthy! At that point the hypocrisy of adult rules about polite language was never clearer to me.

Eugene Chadbourne's daughter used to babysit mine. He cooked us Tagine chicken once.

Which one, chromaphone?
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 11:55am chromaphone:

Bliss
Avatar Fri. 4/10/15 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

Jim Henson used to be our paper boy. He delivered the Washington Star in the early 1960s to our house.
