Candy in Australia was amazing. I would have the same stuff made in the UK and it didn't taste the same. I think it's the AnZac milk. I remember that I had never had such delicious milk as the stuff I had down there. Kalona milk from Iowa comes close

Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:22am Doug Schulkind:

Dried Penis Horn was great. At least their early stuff, before they sold out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/18/14 10:23am Cecile:

James I'm not a jelly bean fan, and to me Jelly Bellies were worse than regular ones. Too much flavor. hahahahaha

Give me a good Jolly Rancher any time.

hahahhaha, stanley and doug
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:25am listener james from westwood:

@Cecile: Shockingly, they actually have Jolly Rancher brand jelly beans. I don't recommend them; they didn't stay down for me.
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:25am earrie:

The easter eggs hunts were always jelly bean hunts. I thought jelly beans were some kind of eggs for some time.

Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:41am listener james from westwood:

As work-singing goes, the recordings of women pounding corn (or grain) and of the post office singers, both played on FMU, both made in Africa IIRC, are my mental go-to's.

Broccoli just needs to be treated gently — and garnished with cilantro, don't you know. Quite tasty.

Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

I am making pizza tonight. I make pizza every Friday night. Because Friday night is pizza night.
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:47am ndbob:

hmm - to me nothing goes well with broccoli - there are green veggies i like - snow peas, green beans, asparagus - but nothing can make broccoli palatable to me, let alone tasty - I'd rather eat at McDonald's:)
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:49am βrian:

And all hail Sweet Mother Kale, of course. A nice chiffonade, lightly steamed. then dressed with almonds, lemon, and olive oil.
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:49am listener james from westwood:

It's also pizza night for my dad, although he gets it from, of all places, a local chicken jernt that makes great pizza, too.
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:50am listener james from westwood:

I've been adding a handful of kale to berry smoothies lately. Need my vitamin K where I can get it. Also slivering it into miso soup instead of seaweed.
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:51am Van in DC:

Any listeners down around Acapulco? Pretty big (7.5) earthquake not far away from there
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:52am ndbob:

ah - a double cheeseburger, small order of fries - though I would definitely prefer broccoli free Asian food
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:52am listener james from westwood:

ndbob: I don't know if broccoli roasts as well as cauliflower or Brussels sprouts do, but that might be an option. Roast it, squeeze of lemon, bit of extra virgin olive oil, some herbs....
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

You know, I am in pretty much a constant rage about Ken Burns' 19-hour documentary "Jazz," which refused to recognize or acknowledge the influence or even existence of jazz beyond American borders. How absurd and outrageous!!!

Somebody, talk me of the ledge!

Been a lotta earthquakes in the past couple of weeks, no?
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Our next selection will be finnish even before it started.
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:53am listener james from westwood:

It seems there have been.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/18/14 10:53am Uncle Michael:

Doug, at least Burns hinted at the fact that some white people played some jazz, allegedly.
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:53am ndbob:

@James that might make it more palatable but not sure @Doug i've heard you say that - I thoroughly agree - in fact I've quoted you re that
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:54am Van in DC:

Yes there has been Doug. And this one hit just minutes ago.
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

I was so mad, my first WFMU Marathon premium after that "Jazz" documentary came out was a compilation of amazing improvisation from around the world. I called it...

Jazz Burns Ken
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/18/14 10:55am northguineahills:

Ken Burns also didn't cover any jazz after 1958, either.

Meanwhile, there's this (which hits a little close to home):

That's not quite right. Ken Burns had Branford Marsalis badmouth Cecil Taylor for about 30 seconds. That was post-1958.
  Fri. 4/18/14 11:00am Cecile:

That's what you get when you have Wynton Marsalis as your jazz guide.

and speaking of marimba bands - I used to have some Guatemalan marimba band records from the 1910s
  Fri. 4/18/14 11:02am Cecile:

Branford actually did a nice doc where free jazz was covered respectfully. He is not the traditionalist his brother is.
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

And Stanley Crouch and Albert Murray. Jeez! Could Burns have assembled a group of smaller-minded people? (Rhetorical question, no need to respond.)

Branford was pretty awful toward "free jazz" in the Burns doc. Maybe he felt the need to apologize.
Avatar    Fri. 4/18/14 11:04am holland oats:

how many times does wynton say "it's like gumbo" in that thing, maybe 30?
  Fri. 4/18/14 11:05am Cecile:

I heard he really liked Ornette and Steve Lacy. I never saw Jazz so I don't know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/18/14 11:05am northguineahills:

Hasn't Branford played w/ William Parker?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/18/14 11:06am Holly in NC:

@ndbob - I bet my mother could've converted you with "Aunt Edna's Broccoli Casserole" - 2 boxes frozen chopped broccoli (defrosted) mixed w. an entire large box of Velveeta, cubed - topped with 1 cylinder of Ritz crackers (crushed) and a whole stick of melted butter. 50s white trash food at its finest. Haven't had in years but I bet I could still eat the whole (9x13) pan.

btw I LOVE broccoli. After ages of lightly steaming, roasting, sauteeing etc I've been rediscovering loooonnnng braising (i.e., making mush) which is sinfully good. I get plenty of vitamins elsewhere :-)
  Fri. 4/18/14 11:06am Cecile:

Good Finnish pronunciation, Doug

OK, now I'm really leaving. May try & comment from phone, but will be throwing balls for a hyperactive lab so probably not.

You're right - that was something else on the trombone, speaking as a trombonist...
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 11:08am listener james from westwood:

It's OK; the trombone had a safeword.

Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 11:09am βrian:

"Hyperactive lab?" You mean meth?
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 11:09am ndbob:

@Holly hmm.. I don't know - I cant handle velveeta, but some slightly less processed cheese food would be fine - I'd certainly go with the Ritz crackers and butter though:) Yesterday was one of the rare two green veggies days for me - asparagus and snow peas

Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

In every man, a little bit of dog.

Not so sure that David S. Ware getting signed to Columbia was a good thing. Pretty sure Ware didn't have positive things to say about it. I could be wrong, but that is my recollection.

See ya later, ngh!
