i look forward to ribbeting radio.
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 8:55am Doug Schulkind:

There is a chain of contemporary country radio station's called "Froggy 95" or "Froggy 98" (or whatever the station's frequency is). For long stretches mid-state on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, it's all you can tune in. Hid-E-ous.
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 8:56am glenn:

i love all those cottage country radio station names. the bear, the wolf, caribou fm.

anyway, there is a certain magic quality to sitting on a deck on an island 25 miles from nowhere and listening to radio on a saturday night.

morning Doug and everyone!
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

Beautifully put. And with radio, that island need only be in the mind.

Also, I got the parcel yesterday. Thank you!

ah good. i thought it would show up today. did you listen to the c.d.?
Avatar    Fri. 2/7/14 9:10am listener james from westwood:

i used to get a distant-sounding am radio station, somewhere in the 1400s, in the early 90s. 70s and 80s metal. no idea where it broadcast from (i was in northern NJ). i suspect half my reason for liking it was the fact that I could get it, static and all.
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

@glenn
Haven't had a chance to open up the deal. Hopefully later today.

Hey everybody, Listener Glenn sent me an external optical disc drive. Everybody shout "GODDAMM THAT'S AMAZING, THANK YOU LISTENER GLENN." In unison.

I am able to pick up a Polish language AM radio broadcast from my home, but then I found out that their transmitter is walking distance from my home. By "walking-distance", I mean that it is litterally less than a mile away.

You got to hand it to the Brits - they sure know how to make a good ale and even better, a good porter. So below a couple of Norwegian adaptations.

Acquired for the weekend:

Translated as "old boy" and "son of a preacher", respectively. The chap on the bottle is Ivar Aasen, if anyone associates anything by that name. Not distributed internationally so far.

Hey, might be headed for Newcastle end of the month, which must include at least some time for sampling of local products - beyond the Newcastle Brown Ale.

Avatar    Fri. 2/7/14 10:22am Brian in UK:

Hugo, guessing that you will take the ferry across the North Sea. Beers look interesting. There are so many microbreweries here now. The place to go though is the US, never thought I would write that.

Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 10:31am Goyim in the AM:

Speaking of coals to Newcastle, the number of microbreweries in Germany and Austria is exploding lately -- mostly (but not entirely) because there are maybe 3 corporations responsible for most of the hundreds and hundreds of German & Austrian beer brands, and you can taste it. www.mybier.at

From a NYT piece on the book:

“It’s exploded, not just in this country but around the world,” Mr. Oliver said as we drank an aperitif, the Cantillon Rosé de Gambrinus, a gorgeously tart lambic from Belgium that was funky, fruity and deliciously stimulating.

@SeanG
YOU are the person who hipped me to the father/son thing! Thanks. I got email from Fagan yesterday.

Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

69 Love Songs is just brilliance brilliance brilliance. Brilliance.

Thanks for the Olypics tips 'n' tricks. I will explore 'em all after the show.

Doug, enjoying the music this AM. RE watching online Olympics, I don't think you can easily or probably legally. I've contemplated trying one of those cheap laptop TV tuners. Mixed reviews on Amazon. bit.ly...
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 11:37am northguineahills:

Didn't think CBC would work here down south.
Avatar    Fri. 2/7/14 11:37am Brian in UK:

Just back in time to catch the boy from North Dakota.
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks SPaniel!
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 11:38am earrie:

And yet? Cbc noted all day yesterday that it won't be podcasting news broadcasts due to rights issues and the pieces of olympic news. Bizarrrro all around.
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 11:41am glenn:

i'm just waiting to see how long it'll be before they try to arrest some queer positive athlete from another country. not long, i bet. it's going to be a shitstorm.
Avatar    Fri. 2/7/14 11:42am herb.nyc:

i've only seen MAGNETIC FIELDS once, at lowe's theater in jersey city. very beautiful. (the venue too)
Avatar    Fri. 2/7/14 11:42am Carmichael:

If you can change your IP address to .ca, you can get through to Canada's coverage. One of those IP randomizer sites can help you.
Avatar    Fri. 2/7/14 11:44am ndbob:

@glenn I presume they are way too smart to do that - but you never know
Avatar    Fri. 2/7/14 11:44am Brian in UK:

Is Stephin Merritt singing at the opening ceremony of the Olympics?
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 11:45am glenn:

cbc coverage is good for a couple of reasons. it's mostly live instead of tape delayed, and they will show athletes from all over, as opposed to just american or canadian. also the best curling and hockey coverage.
Avatar    Fri. 2/7/14 11:46am Gary:

@Carmichael, are you saying I can find an IP randomizer and change to, say, Russia or Italy, to take advantage of file-sharing sites there that don't allow US access? Because that would change my life
Avatar    Fri. 2/7/14 11:46am herb.nyc:

@brian in UK - good point!
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 11:46am northguineahills:

Most of the times i"ve seen the Magnetic fields, it was in small venues w/ maybe 80 people max. (this was all in FL/GA in the 90s)
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

Here is that Kickstarter project: www.kickstarter.com...

Also, it really is rather amazing how completely and entirely Mick Jagger copied Don Covay.

speaking of CURLING, last night's HEARTY WHITE show had him chipping at some ice. then he said "this is how curling probably got started...". that guy is very off, but in a very good way.
Avatar    Fri. 2/7/14 11:47am listener james from westwood:

you know, i had a teeny hint of van morrison in his vocals in the earlier part. maybe just me imagining where morrison picked it up from.
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 11:47am glenn:

mmm. i don't see how putin can pass the law, warn everybody about breaking it, and then not act on it when it happens, which it will, guaranteed.
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 11:48am earrie:

Hockey on olympic sized ice. Now those are plays.
Avatar    Fri. 2/7/14 11:48am listener james from westwood:

glenn, don't try to penetrate the gray labyrinth of putin's kgb mind. if you emerge, it will be as a changed person.
Avatar    Fri. 2/7/14 11:49am Gary:

Thanks for the vertigo, UM
Avatar    Fri. 2/7/14 11:50am Uncle Michael:

Don't thank me, Gary. It's a gateway drug.
Avatar Fri. 2/7/14 11:51am glenn:

well, these are putin's games not russia's, for better or worse, as somebody said on the c.b.c. this morning.

It's my first attempt at saffron rice. I'm going Latin this time, and only have onions and beans around. If it goes well, then I'll try a thai spin this
