Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 9:34am still b/p:

Good morning.
Just read that Leschenko was banned in early Soviet Union days because because "the style (tango and foxtrot) was deemed counter-revolutionary...'78 records were smuggled into the country from the Baltics, and specialists would bootleg his music onto "ribs" (used X-ray plates)."

@still b/p interesting story
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 9:39am Gary:

From Google's English translation (speaking of psychedelic): "That success made them do many live performances and television. The rhythms created by "Carlos", for the songs were very psychedelic, highly distorted guitars and rock with strong bases, which made national success that simple."

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/28/13 9:44am Lewis:

hey folks - have you seen this from Salon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/28/13 9:44am Lewis:

hint - black punk rockers from 1974 Detroit...
  Fri. 6/28/13 9:46am andujar:

this Kent Gomez LP is very rare! good stuff.
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 9:47am Gary:

@Lewis It's out now? I think I saw a trailer for it, but a while ago, and then I didn't hear anything more about it. Just looked it up and it's playing at Cinema Village right now -- awesomeness!
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

The brothers behind that Detroit band eventually gave up rock and moved to Vermont where they've been playing fairly awful roots-reggae for the snowbirds. I saw them in a club near Ludlow one Thanksgiving weekend about 15 years ago.
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

I first discovered Kent G from that Lost Classics of Salsa set. Led my to the full LP. Title track of "My Ghetto" is monumental.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/28/13 9:50am Lewis:

@Gary - very cool; looks like the closest it is going to get to me is Duluth (?!)

@Doug- in Salon they formed "Lamsbread, a longtime staple of the East Coast summer festival circuit."
  Fri. 6/28/13 9:53am andujar:

I was digging with my homeboy Bongohead at one of the WFMU fairs. I looked thru just about everything this guy had but figured "why should i look thru the polka LPs?". well then Bongo looked thru them and turned up My Ghetto for like a buck or something.
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

In fact, the track after this Joey Pastrana is from Lost Classics of Salsa, Vol. 1.

Yup. Lambsbread. Their music was really quite awful. These fake rastas playing reggay for a drunk and hooting après ski crowd. We just went in for some beers and were confronted with this bizarre collision of cultures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/28/13 9:54am northguineahills:

Awesome Lewis, I've only read small bites about them,
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

Give Pablo my best when you next see him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/28/13 9:55am Lewis:

@Doug - I can imagine the nightmare and it isn't pretty...
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 9:57am Jeff Golick:

Two of the most hideous words, when put together: "après ski."
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 9:58am Jeff Golick:

(@Doug: I stole your accent aigu; hope you don't mind.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/28/13 9:58am jk:

I'm more into the avant ski crowd
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
Just don't steal my ragú.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/28/13 9:59am jk:

Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 9:59am Jeff Golick:

I'm with you, @jk. There's a band name: The Avantskis.
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:00am Gary:

@ jk ... be careful what you wish for!
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:00am Gary:

Favorited every track of that set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 6/28/13 10:01am Uncle Michael:

@Lewis: I've had Death tracks in my show folder, languishing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/28/13 10:02am jk:

ok, I've never actually been on skis in my life.
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:06am KevinfromBayRidge:

Hey Doug & all Drummersomes! Very grateful to hear your wunnerful tunes. The pop-up (my only way in at work) ceased working yesterday morning and there's nothing worse than an FMU auditory vacuum. Luckily, upon turning on my "machine" ths morning, the connectivity gods had smiled on me again...Whewwww! Day by Day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/28/13 10:08am Lewis:

@Uncle Michael - sounds like you will have lots of time to work through some of that languishing material next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/28/13 10:08am northguineahills:

I've been listening at work via my phone, and commenting via their interwebs....
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:10am Doug Schulkind:

Hi and hello,KevinfromBayRidge!

I think a glitch has been discovered with the pop-up player. When a show joins or leaves the stream, and thus the streaming content switches from the detault random-play queue of tracks to a live radio show (or back), it makes the pop-up player fail. If this ever happens, just close it and reopen.

The authorities have been alerted and will be working to correct the imperfection.
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

You rebel you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/28/13 10:12am Lewis:

WRT the pop-up player: I have found that all I have to do is stop and start again and things settle down...
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

I know absolutely nothing about this group, Perception, but I deeply dig this record. Which I found here:
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:15am still b/p:

At almost every program transition on the stream, the pop-up goes into a roughly one-second intermittency -- on - off - on -off...
Is that the common failure encountered? Sometimes it's what alerts me to what time it is.
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:15am Jeff Golick:

@Lewis: that's been my Perception, too.

FAVING the hell out of this one.
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
You are describing exactly what (I hear) happens, yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/28/13 10:16am Lewis:

@still b/p: the radio popup version of bells in Switzerland...
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

OK, just found this record was also shared at Mutant Sounds, with this description:

Futura label jazz-rock/Zeuhl Music album, issued in 1971. Led by Jeff Seffer (aka Yochk'o Seffer) on bass-clarinet, soprano & tenor saxes, along with Siegfried Kessler piano, electric piano), Didier Levallet (bass) and Jean-My Truong (drums). Shortly after this Yochk'o Seffer joined Magma (on such classics as Mekanick Kommando & 1001° Centigrades) and then later founded Zao. "Colour splashes, melting magma, he plays like he paints and sculpts: he is the melting pot of the dancing lyricism of his compatriot Bartok, the Coltranian fire and the self proclamations of a Monk with a multi-instrumental virtuoso (from sopranino to bass saxophone) and with an endless passion.
Avatar    Fri. 6/28/13 10:21am duke:

Thanks for that link to the Perception recording
Avatar    Fri. 6/28/13 10:22am duke:

BTW, this Bill Evans cut is damn nice too.
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

Evans with Scott LaFaro (bass) and Paul Motian (drums). What a trio. Maybe the best piano trio ever. (A stupid kind of statement, but I'm overcome with exuberance.)
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:24am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:24am KevinfromBayRidge:

I think my problem was on the corp/gov filter end. The GTDS program transition thing is nothing at all, relatively.A simple pause/play solves it.
  Fri. 6/28/13 10:25am trs:

It was quite fantastic.
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for appropriately shouting, Jeff.

Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:28am Jeff Golick:

LaFaro died ten days after those recordings, I believe. Doug, was that from the Village Vanguard recording? He was 25.
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

I broadcast a Scott LaFaro birthday show last year:

Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

If you Google "Yaqub Speaks" you'll find a number of blogs sharing that record. Not sure if any links still work. I'd be happy to provide for anyone who'd like the tracks. (Track #4 is a duet for piano and orgasm.)

Just email me a request!

Rockin Molam!
  Fri. 6/28/13 10:54am Jonathan:

Would ya believe that I recently found an original mono pressing of the "Waltz For Debby" LP in a dollar bin?
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

This Thai gem comes courtesy (of course) of Peter Doolan's amazing Monrakplengthai:
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

That is both a wonder (for you) and an abomination (for the universe).
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 10:57am Gary:

I promised my coworkers a trip to the Korean taco truck when it opens at 11, so I'm bowing out, but will listen to the rest in of the show in the archive. Can't tear myself away from this insanely great Molam, though -- so, so good.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/28/13 11:20am Vivian:

Alright! All my dogs were strays. Why the holdout, Doug? Is it due to the cats?
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

According to writer David Copland, that Zimbabwean version of Skokiaan from '47 was the original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 6/28/13 11:22am pacific standard simon:

The Spike Jones version is sorta, WTF? But you expect that.
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

The cats. The developing maturity of the potential dog's main person. The poop. Mostly the poop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 6/28/13 11:23am Uncle Michael:

It's all about the poop.
Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

One of our cats is really fragile emotionally. When we got a third cat last year (a year after another of our cats died), this dear quivering ball of fur just flipped out. 18 months later, he is still peeing all over the house. I figure a dog is just going to WRECK him. Or maybe he'll surprise us all and become best buds. Oh well.

Avatar Fri. 6/28/13 11:45am Alex In Illinois:

Actually she named the dog: "Zander" -- short for "Alexander".

Last week, I missed the show because I was flying to D.C. that day to attend my sister's wedding in Maryland. There were some Pittsburghers there, because that is where her wife is from.

@ Doug - completely understand. One of my cats passed away last year. My husband offered to pay for the adoption of another cat. However, not sure how my other cat will handle it. I can handle the cat pee, my husband can't - he flips out.
