  Fri. 5/3/13 9:08am Parq:

'Morning, all. Doug, dug the Gleason reference. He was kind of a local hero in our house when I was growing up, as my dad had a couple of close pals who were on his stage crew in Florida.

Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

@ausmanx
Mr. Rungpetch would not approve.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

Several of the tracks in this set were downloaded from Gary Sullivan's brilliant Bodega Pop blog: bodegapop.blogspot.com

Coincidentally, I'll be coming from Miami Beach, Florida today and opening with Melancholy Serenade. The June Taylor Dancers are hogging the bathroom.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

The June Taylor dancers had big... toes.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:18am merv:

Top of the morning to everyone -- hate to bear the bad news, but the link for this mix is dead... :(
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

You mean the Saigon Lounge mix? Many of Bodega Pop's links were wiped. If you'd like a copy of this great compilation, send me an email and I will provide.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:21am listener james from westwood:

you know what they say about big toes ....

better balance!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:21am merv:

Yes, that one... Thanks Doug! You're like a dependable mid-90s Toyota... (?)
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:22am still b/p:

Whewoohh...how hinnnky it is.
Good morning. Thanh Thuy music sounded like something Tom Waits would sing over.
Camels have good balance?
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:22am Doug Schulkind:

@Merv
You're gonna make me cry. I miss my '93 Tercel with 250k miles. sniff sniff.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:23am Doug Schulkind:

Be sure to stay tuned for the exciting conclusion of this performance. Coming up in 14 seconds.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

Hiya still b/p. Like the GJ avatar tribute!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:24am Uncle Michael:

Our '92 SR5 pickup is still in service as a work truck here at the Hinky Dinky Time Media Complex. It was purchased new.

Actually, I think I'll be opening with the Kasanetz & Katz All-stars' tribute to minstrel favorites from the Reconstruction. It's a 40 minute set.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:25am merv:

@Doug ...about to hit 200k on our '96 Camry Wagon WITH the fold-down seats in the trunk... Who says you need a mini-van to cart six kids around?
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:26am dc pat:

this set is making the morning. Need to bulk up for the stupid, useless, petty meetings in about an hour...

Is that avatar a reference to the Isle of Man?
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:40am ausmanx:

Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

Morning Alex! And you, too, dc pat.

Here, ausmanx, have some ju-ju beans.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:41am listener james from westwood:

goin' ape for this gorilla mountain!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:42am Uncle Michael:

My show comes on at Midnight in Perth. Yes?
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:42am holland oats:

drumma! drummees!(?)!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

These tracks are what got Mark Fosson a record contract with John Fahey's label. Fosson moved out to the Pacific Northwest, but the label dissolved and the deal fell through. (sniff sniff)

On a happier note: Holland Oats!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:44am ausmanx:

swoon, mr schulkind... and yes, that sounds about right Uncle M... unless you mean Perth in Scotland? but no doubt you're referring to the home town of the richest woman in the world. who I believe is planning to tune in...
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:45am still b/p:

An avatar change results in automatic back-replacement throughout the FMU archive universe, which is a bit freaky, or a bit hinky.

Meanwhile, in the wider universe, Mars needs haiku!

Mr. Cooper, if you're listening. You're up next.

matt's GJ show was great yesterday, dave's too
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

@holland oats
Four thumbs up (and three fingers of tequila) to that.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:58am Matt from Springfield:

Hi Doug and Drummers!
Hi Uncle Michael and Hinky Dinks!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:59am Lewis:

good morning to all - I have been told that it can snow in May in Minnesota. I now have proof. hope the flowers are blooming where ever you are...
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

¡Hola Matt!
  Fri. 5/3/13 10:01am trish:

Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:02am Uncle Michael:

Hola, Springfield Matt!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:04am listener james from westwood:

howdy matt, lewis, and all joining us for chapter 2 of 5!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:04am Matt from Springfield:

Hola all-a!
Still can't get live broadcasts here, but enjoying the Archives--a different but still very great drummer: "Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away."
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:05am Matt from Springfield:

Fiveash's GJ tribute looks spectacular, I'll dig into that later today.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:11am Jeff Golick:

MAN HANDS.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:11am glenn:

yes, you should do that, matt.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

Hello Trish! and Jeff ("in living color") Golick!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:13am Parq:

Matt, Fiveash and Spazz both. Six hours of gloriosity.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

Stay warm 'n' toasty, Lewis. I just had to close the window here. Chilly but bright.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:14am still b/p:

Got to hear George singin' Knock Three Times.....who knew?
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:15am Uncle Michael:

That was a moment.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:15am ndbob:

31 here now but going up to the mid 50s - we are well north of the snowstorm yesterday
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:16am glenn:

i thought knock three times was pretty great, actually.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:18am Jeff Golick:

The hand-tinting on the photo of the lovely lady at left (stink-eye notwithstanding) brought to mind these hand-colored Norwegian latern slides: publicdomainreview.org... The world is full of wonders.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:19am Matt from Springfield:

@glenn: Not going to say No to Ol' No-Show!
Oh yes, and our very own Spazz! What great tributes!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:19am northguineahills:

Stop putting out stuff to waste my time Jeff. Oh, wait, I'm on the internet ;)
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:19am Jeff Golick:

(BTW, if you want me, I'll be at the Public Domain Review for the next 50 years.)

(While listening to GTDR, bien sur.)
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:20am listener james from westwood:

looking forward to hitting the spazz archive later tonight.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:21am Matt from Springfield:

I'll be joining ya from afar, LJFW!

@Jeff G: Public domain is the new black on the Web these days, get into it as much as possible!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:22am northguineahills:

Old Norway looks a lot like Iceland.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

Wow. Beautiful stuff, Jeff G. I call ALL those photos for future playlist-page beautification!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:23am ndbob:

@jeff @matt for sure
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:24am Jeff Golick:

@Matt: I lurv the p.d. In my day job as audiobook publisher, we've mined the public domain for all it's worth. We're sort of mercenary that way.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:24am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: I thought you might say that, so I licked all of them.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:24am Uncle Michael:

gonna tend to some bidnez...I'll probably not no-show
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:25am Jeff Golick:

@UM: good luck to you, sir! May your mic breaks be audible.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:26am Uncle Michael:

thanks Jeff...I'll probably over-modulate
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:29am Matt from Springfield:

Agree, NDBob!

@Jeff G: That's great, public domain = "stood the test of time"!
@NGH: Norway and Iceland (and Greenland, Scotland too in ways) are all very fjordy.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:31am Matt from Springfield:

Color film has been a convenience for much of the 20th century, but I like the really old color photos the photographers mixed themselves (a la Prokudin-Gorskii). Much brighter, more impressionist, more of an "art" than a "document" that way.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:35am still b/p:

Tell my family where I've gone: Public Domain Review. Had no idea my Friday would include "How the Bifurcated Girls Have Rough House in the Dressing room, " and "Fukurokuju Writing with His Head." Feeding my head!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
I just sent a sample of your DNA to Homeland Security.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:40am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: Howard Riley would like a word with you. Or a letter, at least.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:41am duke:

The Public Domain Review seems likely to be a great way to spend time. I'm going to read The Erotic Dreams of Emanuel Swedenborg? Who knew that ol' Emanuel had such a dirty mind?
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:45am Jeff Golick:

The naked tennis players of Edward Muybridge also caught my eye...
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

I hope you all enjoyed to criminally underappreciated (and uknown) Howar Riley Trio!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:45am Van in DC:

This is just Dum?
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:45am listener james from westwood:

man, sounds like the sort of place i'd be lost for some time. like shorpy or letters of note.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

"The Naked Tennis Players of Edward Muybridge," is the title of my first novel! (Anyone know any good ghost writers?)
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:46am northguineahills:

Pow!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:47am still b/p:

"Dirty mind" is a fair substitute for whatever typically would go in the line, "An opinion is like a/an __________ , everybody's got one."
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

Dum and Dum-er!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:49am listener james from westwood:

doug, search the pub.domain review for spirit photography and see if there's a possible coauthor!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:50am Van in DC:

This is Dumming up quite nicely I must say!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

The Dow Jones just hit 15,000. Must be all those gun purchases.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:51am Dead Mime Walking:

This song is making me groove too hard and now everyone at work is staring at me...thanks Doug!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:52am Jeff Golick:

That Shuko shook me up. In a good way.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Red Norvo = vibes
Tal Farlow = guitar
Charles Mingus = bass
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:53am listener james from westwood:

oh, that dow. pride goeth before a fall, and a haughty spirit before a 40% correction.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

@Dead Mime Walking
Hey, my pleasure, but maybe it's just that your fly is open?
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:55am northguineahills:

What just happened there? Why haven't I heard of Shuko Mizuno?
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:56am Van in DC:

Because he/she/they aren't on FMA...? :(

Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 10:58am Dead Mime Walking:

@Doug Just checked...nope. Its gotta be the tunes! If you keep this up, I'll be fired by the end of the day. Minitex Library Information Systems has an explicit policy on excessive grooving.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:02am Jeff Golick:

Jeff Albert seems to have a really good name.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

I just downloaded the Shuko Mizuno recently, but I can't for the life of me, retrace my steps. The old Google Reader could be searched and I'd find it in a NY minute. But now I'm using Feedly (with the demise of Google Reader) and it fucking doesn't have a search function. I'm still looking...
  Fri. 5/3/13 11:07am trish:

Google could have improved Reader search and y'know, bolster its strength. But marketing suggested it go all fakebooky.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:10am ndbob:

I kind of doubt that James
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:13am Carmichael:

OK, good Friday morning Doug and all Super Tentembas out there.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:14am Lewis:

Is this (super Tentemba)related to the ethiopique stuff?
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Buon giorno, Carmichaelanglo!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:15am ndbob:

morning Carmichael!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

Slacka!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:20am Carmichael:

Have to go get my Weetabix. brb ....
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:22am Alex In Illinois:

What's a Syliphone?
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:22am Lewis:

hey @ndbob - can't remember how far west you are in the great state of ND, but I was close to ND earlier in the week at Crookston MN - spent a chilly morning in a blind watching and listening to prairie chickens. Pretty flat up that way and my reference frame is South Florida. No snow though...
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

Form form form formidable!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:23am Alex In Illinois:

THe album is "the Syliphone Years".
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex
Syliphone is a who, not a what. The record label Syliphone is named for famed producer Ibrahim Sylla: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:25am ndbob:

@Lewis - I'm in Jamestown - 90 miles west of Fargo - so south and west of where you were - there are a few hills around here , but mostly it's flat - not quite as flat as Crookston and Grand Forks though
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:25am jill:

Great show, as always Drummer! Happy Friday drumettes.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

Hey there Jill!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:27am Alex In Illinois:

Okay, because Syliphone sounds a lot like a toy for toddlers. "Hey Kids! It's the Sillyphone!"
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:28am Carmichael:

Alrighty then, back to crank out the workload and get some cul-cha!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:31am Alex In Illinois:

@Lewis: Are you a bird scientist? My brother-in-law is a wildlife photographer specializing in birds. Sometimes he spends the wee hours after midnight in a blind to photograph owls.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:34am Lewis:

@Alex i IL - not a bird scientist, but I was visiting one. I run an academic institute for the UMN and we were showing the flag at our most remote campus. Pretty cool trip. I did take my zoom recorder and got some pretty good recordings. Still a newbie on that front and have some learning to do wrt wind...
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:34am Doug Schulkind:

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...

Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

Hollah, Holly!
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:37am Holly in NC:

Is it it's or its? Not "it is", but its looks funny.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of heads off, this new one from Sahel Sounds has just about blown my noggin into the next county. BOLLYWOOD INSPIRED FILM MUSIC FROM NIGERIA. Are you fucking kidding me?!?!?!?!?!?
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

it's its, Holly.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:41am ndbob:

this is good Doug - admittedly an influence I never could have anticipated
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:44am Uncle Michael:

OUTTA MY WAY
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:44am Holly in NC:

Thanks, Doug. Running around as leaving to care for a dog who just had one of ITS eyes removed. Cancer sucks.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:45am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: That sounds bananas! (Do they have bananas in Nigeria?...) All you need to find now is that Micronesian doo-wop and you'll be set! :)
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:45am Uncle Michael:

See ya, Holly. Poor dog.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

Love to the pup, Holly.

In Nigeria they surely have plantains.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:47am Uncle Michael:

Man this is smokin' guitar.
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:48am Uncle Michael:

Doug, may I have this spoken word thing? Por favor?
Avatar Fri. 5/3/13 11:49am listener james from westwood:

yikes, holly, sorry to hear about the ailing dog. hope recovery is smooth!
