Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:20am Van in DC:

Good morning Doug! Did you see the Library of Congress music news yesterday? You like Ornette Coleman, right...?

"The Shape of Jazz to Come," Ornette Coleman (1959) was honored.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:25am Doug Schulkind:

Wow! Thanks for that, Van. You know my maternal grandfather once worked at the LoC. I love that list of recordings. Ornette is brilliant and that Cachao record is amazing. Hard to get past "Bacon, Beans and Limousines" on the list!
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:28am Van in DC:

I love visiting the LoC on occasion during my daily lunch time trek around the mall area here :)
Avatar    Fri. 3/22/13 8:29am duke:

I'm glad to see that the successful marathon has allowed WFMU to upgrade to the latest DJ technology.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:33am Doug Schulkind:

See if you can hear the difference in today's tin-can cast today, Duke!
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:34am Van in DC:

I wonder if the programs referenced by the LoC article will have any impact on available musical blog items that we all love so much around here? Specifically the federal copyright thingy to pre-1972 recordings?
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:40am bobdc:

Doug, what did your grandfather do there? I'm actually a bit of a metadata geek by trade, and the LoC has been doing cool stuff on that front for 200 years.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:45am Doug Schulkind:

He was an administrator. He was a linguist by trade. Not sure how that came into play at the Library.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:47am Van in DC:

Knowledge in every form comes into play there Doug! I had an amazing behind the scenes tour given by my drinking buddy Director of Rare Items & Collectibles a few years back :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/22/13 8:47am listener james from westwood:

that control center has a "child tested safety plug"—makes me feel bad for the child!
good friday to all, and happy post-marathon tidings to you, doug!
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:49am Doug Schulkind:

@Listen James from Westwood
All of WFMU's equipment is tested by children first. Station policy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/22/13 8:52am Uncle Michael:

Hi Erella
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:53am Van in DC:

Is that Still B/P? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/22/13 8:55am Parq:

Nice photoshopping. You should get some made for real and use it one of next year's 'thon premiums. (Premia?)
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:57am Doug Schulkind:

Aren't premia some kind of huge rodent? (Not that WFMU shouldn't consider offering them for the 2014 marathon!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/22/13 8:58am Uncle Michael:

I like how the pictures on the front of the player have been done too. I recognize Sharpling. Who are the other two?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/22/13 8:58am Uncle Michael:

Premia is good eats.

Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/22/13 9:05am Maggie B.:

Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:05am Doug Schulkind:

I just learned that an asbestos-besotted tarantula is on the loose in Cardiff. Best that I stayed home.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:07am dçþät:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/22/13 9:08am Parq:

"Asbestos Besotted Tarantula" would make a good name for -- well, no it wouldn't, but it's still an elegant turn of a phrase.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Well the article Listener Holly sent me calls the poor thing "contaminated," be we all know the tarantula enjoyed every minute of it.

See here:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/22/13 9:14am Parq:

"Snort some random tarantula" -- hah! Great conversation. Someone should be putting all this on the web. Oh, wait ..

"Child-tested safety plug". BZZZZT.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

Don't worry, Shaun. We recycled all the children who failed the test.
Avatar    Fri. 3/22/13 9:18am duke:

@Shaun I'm glad to see that they stopped doing animal testing and decided to test it on children instead.

This Suwweli f-Riyadu thing is really wailing. Pretty amazing
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

This song would be more than twice as good if it were twice as long.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:19am Shaun:

@Doug Gonna require a few lifestyle changes but friends were muttering about a spider intervention, so...

Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

Happy Merv day!
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

"Climax in Morocco" sounds like a film starring the late lamented Harry Reems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/22/13 9:22am Uncle Michael:

Merv day?
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:23am ndbob:

That was great, that Hassan el-Dariouki & al-Makhloufia. THAT'S what a person likes to hear on stream start-up.

Spiders clean up with an 8-step program, right...?

That's not me on the box, but he looks like a good, bright, promising boy.

Road to Ecstasy would include Dorothy La More More More, yes?
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

Coming up in the next set: The greatest pro-marijuana song ever recorded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/22/13 9:29am listener james from westwood:

ndbob, i've got your harry reems tribute right here:
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:31am Doug Schulkind:

You know, I have to say, when I was trying to figure what track to begin the show with, a conversation happened in my head that went something like this:

ME: "Start with that Moroccan thing. It's killer."

OTHER ME: "It's a little raucous. Maybe begin with something more calming and inviting."

ME: "Who're you kidding?! It'll blow them away. You know they'll love it. Jesus, it's amazing."

OTHER ME: "Yes yes, of course you're right. (You always are.) What was I thinking."
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:32am ndbob:

Thanks James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/22/13 9:33am Uncle Michael:

Avatar    Fri. 3/22/13 9:41am duke:

RIP Chinua Achebe. I would occasionally see him at Brown. I read Things Fall Apart as a teenager. It had a big effect on me.

Things Fall Apart was huge for me, too.

that reminds me, heading out to Colorado in a couple weeks...wonder if there will be vending machines in the lobby...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/22/13 9:51am Alex In Illinois:

I read "Things Fall Apart" in my early 20's because I was into African things, and my sister had a copy, and Jerry Harrison had a song by that name. Then I read "No Longer At Ease". I am not sure why I did not read any more of his works.
Avatar    Fri. 3/22/13 9:51am duke:

I think viper is a much better term than stoner. Much classier.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

Same here, Doug! Minus the decades of staying in Vacationland. But I've long longed to see a moose. Once saw a bunch of moose tracks in Nova Scotia, but that's as close as I've come.

Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Hard to say. My first reaction is that it is a stretch to claim that there are "Kentucky roots" in all the different kinds of music to come out of the state. The music from the mountains of Kentucky are surely identifiable as "Kentucky" music. But to claim the music of Helen Humes and Lionel Hampton as authentically Kentuckian sounds like not much more than a great sounding book proposal.

Yeah it's really neat to see the bear but then after a while I start to think of the sad sets of circumstances that cause these guys to be running about in NJ suburbia. starts to bum me out.

@doug Great thanks to you, yeah the whole delirious academic speech about *the unconditional influence of Kentucky music* looks *weird*, I was just searching a great about Music history of the US and I thought starting with this one.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 10:56am still b/p:

Doug, get yerself up to Moosehead Lake or Baxter State Park area for an overnight and a moose lookaround. Seen many many moose. My closest encounter was at about arm's length in Baxter, on a trail that didn't give us much room for going past each other....slowwwwwly...good moose, goooood moose...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/22/13 10:57am joe:

@Uncle Michael I love that idea. I love the whole idea of total chance radio. Something like that or chance games like Zorn and Cage to figure out what to play.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
Yeah, I know I know. There just isn't much moosing happening on the coast. Sigh.

Track # 2 from GE to GI
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

Here are two books on American music that I adore:

Boogaloo: The Quintessence of American Popular Music

and Sonata for Jukebox: An Autobiography of My Ears

Not sure how available they are, but they are fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/22/13 11:04am Michael:

Doug - My wife and daughter and I were driving through New Hampshire, north of Mt. Washington and saw a bunch of cars on the side of the road. We pulled over and saw people crowded around 2 moose – a mother and her young ‘un. From far away they look big – up close like we got they are huge. We looked, took a few pics and got out of there. So, just be careful of what you wish for, moose-wise.

Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

I don't need to pet the beasts. Gazing admiringly from a distance would be just fine. I will however save your phrase "moose-wise" for later use.

@ Je t'adore Doug, merci!

How about that Harvard, eh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 3/22/13 11:12am Uncle Michael:

I just bought those books. Thanks Doug. I haven't quite shifted into baseball book mode for the summer yet.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

This record has another track that is 29+ minutes long. I should have played that one. I don't want this to end.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 11:13am Shaun:

Just thinking you should play this again when it ends.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 11:15am Van in DC:

@Doug - really! Go Harvard! :)
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

If I had any DJ guts, I would do it.

@Uncle Michael
Funny you saw that. Both of those books were summer reading titles. The Sonata for Jukebox especially is wonderful.

I finished Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon recently. It has plenty of references to Funk and Boogaloo as well as a zeppelin named Minnie Ripperton
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

I'm sure you're absolutely right. I have "this thing" about not correcting spellings on record jackets unless I know it's a typo. (Even then I sometimes don't.)

Speaking of books, my sister's book about American Red Cross was recently released. In the beginning, it has a chronology section that includes many events, many of them disasters. If I have the time, I would like to see if I can find a song about each of the disasters. I know I heard one about the Johnstownville Flood of 1889 on this show a few years ago.
