With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

oooh overtime! i'm ready, Sir Stork! it's snowing & Sunday in a *very* quiet place!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm adamdoesit:

Mr. Max Roach's rhythm of liberation and consciousness is the beat for me today. I am most definitely in it for the overtime duration. I dunno how you're going to get through it all though, Stork -- you're gonna have to go at one smoking Roach clip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Irene Trudel:

Do we get prizes for hanging around for the whole show? Probably won't but askin' for a friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Fuzzy:

Howdy spodiodi! And a hearty hello to the rest of the Stork Clubbers!
Avatar 12:12pm hyde:

i just found out that Buell Neidlinger plays on a David Grisman bluegrass record and i am consumed with curiosity
  12:12pm Linda Lee:

this will be *fantastic* & i plan to have the show *on* today.
Avatar 12:13pm coelacanth∅:

i've stayed for the duration of 1 or 2 of the marathon tributes before.
i probably can't today though, unfortunately
  12:13pm Linda Lee:

i'm pretty sure hangin out *is* the prize, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm doctorjazz:

Buell also did some great albums under his own name, labeled "Buellgrass", a mix of jazz and Bluegrass, that are terrific.
Avatar 12:16pm coelacanth∅:

i wish it was snowing here so i wouldn't have to look for excuses to not go anywhere.
+ i love the snow.
Avatar 12:16pm hyde:

@Doc i had no idea!
Avatar 12:18pm hyde:

@coel i am not convinced we even have winter in the northeast anymore. i still have lettuce in pots on my porch that is green and growing
  12:18pm Linda Lee:

hey, just use the show as your excuse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Doug Schulkind:

Beautifully put, Linda Lee!
Avatar 12:18pm Stork:

Sounds cozy, Linda Lee! Perfect time to let Max take you hostage. adamdoesit, you are a smithy of words! Irene - I can't give your friend anything but love through music! It's amazing just what left out today. There outta be a pickup show in future to fit in all the stuff not picked for today.
Avatar 12:19pm Stork:

hyde, that is indeed intriguing.
Swag For Life Member 12:20pm spodiodi:

thanks, Uncle Michael & doctorjazz!
Avatar 12:21pm coelacanth∅:

hyde you might be right.
i, personally, like all the seasons and all weather so it's depressing.
  12:22pm Linda Lee:

hyde, i spent 35 years in catskills winters & they have, in recent years, gotten very odd. snow dearths & dumps instead of the steady 6 month ground cover that keeps the aquifer healthy. this isn't good for the metro areas requiring catskills water, like n y c.
Avatar 12:24pm hyde:

@LL yep.
Avatar 12:24pm coelacanth∅:

i like the idea of growing food outside all years though. it didn't work for me. the 3 pots that i didn't take inside are long ago dead.
  12:25pm Linda Lee:

where are you, hyde?
Avatar 12:27pm Stork:

This is one of the best, most engaged pieces I've ever heard Archie Shepp play.
Avatar 12:27pm hyde:

@LL boston. We dont even really have ice here this year. most nights it gets to like 25 at the lowest and most days have been mid thirties or forties. Last year was a record for fewest nights below freezing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Asheville Jon:

Avatar 12:34pm Stork:

Oops, sorry for that extra vowel, chresti!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm adamdoesit:

@stork Agree -- that was shapely Shepp.
@LL Even 5-7 years ago, the cold stuck. This time of the year would have been consistently below freezing. Now, not so much. Good thing there's no such thing as climate change, hey?
@chresti Hi, chresti!
Avatar 12:39pm chresti:

Hi adamdoesit!
It's supposed to be in the 80s in a few days, here, in SoCal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm doctorjazz:

@hyde, you sent me to the record racks, looking for that Neidlinger band, but I couldn't find the records. They're in there somewhere, Swingrass, and Buellgrass, I'll turn them up eventually. Andy Statman on a fabulous mandolin on them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm doctorjazz:

Roach is one of the few, amazing artists who started in the Swing Era, was a creator of bebop, but still maintained a curiosity and ability to expand into new sounds, playing free in his later years.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm doctorjazz:

Hot Dawg is a great album, absolutely!
Swag For Life Member 12:47pm spodiodi:

also, re: Clifford Brown, assuming everyone knows, but his (step?)-son (Clifford Brown, Jr.) is a dj on KCSM here (in SF/San Mateo)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm doctorjazz:

What kind of music does Clifford Brown jr. Play, Spodiodi?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm adamdoesit:

Thank you, doctorjazz!
I've been keeping Whitney Balliett's collected writing by the bedside. It's interesting to watch his position on Roach shift over the years, from admiring annoyance with his "typewriter insistence," to reverence for a continuously-evolving elder statesman. Here's a snippet from 1990: imgur.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm doctorjazz:

Never heard this Gil Melle (in fact, not familiar with him). Like the track, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm doctorjazz:

Thanks for that, Adamdoesit!
Swag For Life Member 12:54pm spodiodi:

doctorjazz, a bunch of jazz -- the whole station does... i can't really speak to what kind of jazz he plays, but it's all good
Avatar 12:54pm coelacanth∅:

hmm...speaking of Clifford Brown.
dr.jazz i appologise for not downloading all that Clifford Brown you sent my way. it wasn't for lack of appreciation and certainly not for lack of interest. it just was lost in the mess. i saw it there after it had expired.
but Thank you anyway.
Swag For Life Member 12:54pm spodiodi:

here's Clifford Brown Jr's page, doctorjazz kcsm.org...
Swag For Life Member 12:55pm spodiodi:

Barkeep! A minute of your time, please.
I find the drink of the house, Stork's Hoochie Coochie Libation, to be altogether lacking in both Hoochie AND Coochie.

How about a double, on the house, just so that I might be absolutly certain?

Clifford Brown was fabulous, but died really young, in a car accident when he was 25. His son couldn't have a lot of 1st hand memory of him, seems to me (but that probably made him even more "bigger than life" in his eyes).

Those lyrics intoned by Abbey Lincoln on "Mendacity" are so apt after what happened in DC this week. And Eric Dolphy's solo depicts tbe chaos on the floor of the Capitol building as well.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm doctorjazz:

@adandoesit-read Balliett a bit back in the day, used to see some of his writing in The New Yorker. My recollection of him (which may be off) was that he was not interested in jazz's movement after The Swing Era, and disliked it. Most of my Jazz Criticism reading back in those days was Gary Giddens; later Ben Ratliff.

@doctorjazz. I read all those guys, among others. But I had to put up with Leonard Feather in the LA Times. Someone pinned him with the nickname "Moldy Fig" for his stubborness in accepting the progressive nature of jazz music. His feet got stuck to the melting pavement on a very hot day a long, long time ago.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm doctorjazz:

@Gerry from Miami, yup, another writer with no interest in anything past 1945 or so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm adamdoesit:

Doctorjazz, there's something to that about WB. The spaciousness, concision, and tone of the great swing musicians, he tends to find lacking in the denser and harder (post-)modernists. Otoh, he digs and advertises the artfulness of progressives as varied as Mingus, Ornette, and Steve Lacy. I think the general trend of his writing is to get his snoots slowly out of the air as he gets older… an admirable aspiration for anyone.

i've got a fistfull of monopoly money. it'll be worth your trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm doctorjazz:

Thanks again, Storkeleh, great show, get some rest!
Avatar 4:51pm northguineahills:

Mr. Burns ("excellent!"), fudged up the jazz and other music docs, but nearly got the country music one correct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm doctorjazz:

(I believe this was originally issued as Browm-Roach).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm doctorjazz:

I didn't have trouble with Burns-sure, he didn't get some things right, but, hey, any attention to jazz is a good thing.
Avatar 4:54pm hyde:

i'm sorry that i wandered away for awhile, but i'm back now and this bday tribute is EPIC! thank you!
Avatar 4:55pm northguineahills:

@dr jazz: Doug has much more acerbic comments then I do about the jazz doc....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm doctorjazz:

I think I remember that, NGH.
  4:57pm ?:

I haven’t seen the Burns jazz doc. A bit hesitant too after reading your all’s comments
Avatar 4:58pm johnc:

I got booted off. I am “?” Haha
Avatar 4:58pm northguineahills:

@dr jazz: including his premium, "Jazz Burns Ken".
Avatar 4:59pm Stork:

To anyone who has to grab their coats, hats or stoles early, thank you for patronizing my shady establishment, and weave your way home safely. Just a song or two more left in my heart for today
Avatar 4:59pm johnc:

Think I’ll change my fmu name to a question mark though. Suits me more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Do NOT get me started about Ken Burn's Jazz (doc). Suffice it to say that I produced a marathon premium for WFMU about 20 years ago. I called it "Jazz Burns Ken."

Haha! northguineahills beat me to it!
Avatar 4:59pm northguineahills:

@johnc: It's not bad, it just pretends nothing happens after 1963 and post-bop....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm fred:

He should do a doc about noise. Nobody agrees about anything anyway in that scene, it would fit right in
Avatar 5:00pm Stork:

Great title, Doug. I actually admire Burns for trying, but he always seems to grab the wring end when it comes to music.
Avatar 5:01pm coelacanth∅:

(on a side note: your coats may be slightly lighter than when you arrived. Thank you for your patronage)
Avatar 5:01pm johnc:

Thanks NGH. That’s peer weak. Things got real interesting in the mid and late 60s, early 70s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm doctorjazz:

The main criticism, if I remember (overall, not Doug's), was that it was too polite, and ignored avant garde jazz, which are legitimate criticisms. But I still think he got people to check Jazz out, who had no clue it exists. I think that counts for a lot.
Avatar 5:03pm northguineahills:

@fred: I'm breaking some rules as a mod for this subreddit, but this comic is for you: i.redd.it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm adamdoesit:

Bartender, what's the damage? No, not to the furnishings, I will settle that matter uh separately. The bill please! I must catch the 5:37 to New Roach-ell.

Thanks, Stork… and accomplices doctorjazz, Doug S., and UM. You guys put a lot of work into making this such a good time.
Avatar 5:03pm Stork:

Love these memories of stealing our parents' booze. I was too scared to - my parents didnt drink enough to not notice the missing volume, So I stole my friends' parents' hooch instead.
Avatar 5:05pm northguineahills:

@adam: jajaja! (been to New Rochelle)/

@Stork: No such pleasure. My parents are teetotalers.
Avatar 5:05pm coelacanth∅:

for the record johnc, "?" has been used as an actual profile name, though i haven't seen it/him/her... in a long time.
try it, maybe it's defunct?
you could always make a variation of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Doug Schulkind:

The vomitatious dreck spewed by Albert Murray, Stanley Crouch, and the Marsalises in the documentary did enormous damage. Burns allowed himself to get suckered. Those three main talking heads over the course of the 19-hour film impose the most rigid, exclusive orthodoxy. And Wynton does it while espousing that jazz is the most "democratic" of enterprises. The oppposite-is-true flim-flammery is positively Trumpian.
Avatar 5:06pm Stork:

What a great fun evening with you dear, dear people! Lend me your ears next Sunday. Better get a receipt, though.
Avatar 5:06pm northguineahills:

That, and I didn't have my first drink until 6 months before my 21st bday......
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Doug Schulkind:

Branford Marsalis' sneering knee-capping of Cecil Taylor is only the filthiest of many transgressions.
Avatar 5:07pm coelacanth∅:

adam may i tag along to new roach-el?
i'd like to get out of old roach hell
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm fred:

Thanks Stork, great tribute and show. And congrats on the new decor, that adamdoesanicelampimpressionwiththatlampshadeon is a nice addition to the club's style

thanks again, Stork!
to the Max!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Doug Schulkind:

I told you to not get me started.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm doctorjazz:

But, Doug, do you have feelings about it?
My general take on music documentaries-the talking heads are just likely to be a waste of time. How much I like a doc is completely related to the radio of music to talk. The higher the ratio, the more I like it.
Avatar 5:09pm northguineahills:

Stork, gorgeous to our ears, thanks!
Avatar 5:09pm chresti:

I swigged from my dad's Gallo red port, when I was a teen.
Avatar 5:10pm northguineahills:

My bad, Doug!
Avatar 5:10pm coelacanth∅:

Doug having known what a dick winton marsalis is has long made me not want to even hear his music. (of which i don't think i'm missing much anyway)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm WR:
