Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Carmichael:

Heya Mary. Happy NYE Eve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Ike:

Good afternoon, you filthy hippies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Handy Haversack:

Hello, Mary and 100 percent of whatever else!
Avatar 12:03pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Hello Mary, people!
Avatar 12:04pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

almost forgot to tune in, I keep thinking it's Thursday
Avatar 12:06pm david w:

Best 2021 to you, Mary and everyone! (Actually I will also accept "better")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Ike:

@Sylvia, WFMU's schedule is the only thing differentiating the days for me. If I tune in at 9 a.m. (Eastern Time) and Joe McG is on, then it's Monday, Trouble is Thursday, etc.
Avatar 12:06pm TDK60:

Hi DJ Mary W. Happy Feast of the Calendar & Diary Industry Success.
Avatar 12:07pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@Ike yeah, I know the feeling
Swag For Life Member 12:08pm spodiodi:

aloha, Mary Wing and the 100%!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Ike:

Or to tell what day it is, I ask myself, "Which DJ was on last night when I switched off the radio?" So e.g. if it was EFD or Small "Tankie" Change, then today must be Thursday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Handy Haversack:

Right back -- gotta feed the birds!
Avatar 12:11pm Mary Wing:

Hello Carmichael, Ike, Handy, Sylvia, David W, TDK60, and spodiodi! Everybody chant now!
Avatar 12:12pm Mary Wing:

"Small 'Tankie' Change," Ike??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Ike:

Sorry, I shouldn't drag political disputes from there into other comment sections. I'm being a jackass. My apologies. $¢ is playing a lot more political content than he used to.
Swag For Life Member 12:18pm spodiodi:

*chantchantchantchant*
Avatar 12:18pm Mary Wing:

Apology accepted, Ike, have yourself a cookie. :-)
Avatar 12:19pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

maybe I'll get a flute for 2021
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Carmichael:

Good thing you live far away from me, Sylvia ... :)
Avatar 12:20pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

why, you don't like flute, @Carmichael?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Carmichael:

For about 20 seconds, unless it funky flute. Or poopy flute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Handy Haversack:

I had "Ang Sang Wahe Guru" stuck in my head while filling up the feeders, Mary!

Is it weird that it also gave me an appetite?
Avatar 12:25pm Mary Wing:

Poopy flute, ha! That reminds me of earlier in the year, when people would applaud the health care workers at 7 pm every day. There was one person in my neighborhood who would play the trombone, not-reeeeally well, and I wondered why he/she never got any better as the weeks went by, heh. Just blurts of notes, maybe trying to play a tune, but it never improved. Maybe it was supposed to be a poopy trombone tribute?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Ike:

LOLOL @ "poopy trombone"
Avatar 12:26pm Mary Wing:

Handy, the chanting made you one with the universe, and the universe is HONGRY.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Ike:

There's actually a bagpipe player around here who occasionally plays and probably drives half the neighborhood crazy, but I think she/he is actually pretty good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Carmichael:

There can never be a poopy theremin.
Avatar 12:28pm Hubig Pie:

Ana Roxanne > Poopy trombone
Avatar 12:28pm Mary Wing:

Hold my beer, Carmichael. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Handy Haversack:

There's a good piper around here, too.
Swag For Life Member 12:29pm spodiodi:

haha, Mary
Avatar 12:30pm TDK60:

I recall the 7 PM noise. It ended round first week of August. Good neighborly noise. I took improvised percussion instruments. Was sorta wistful to see it end.
Avatar 12:32pm Mary Wing:

I just looked at my journal, TDK60, and I wrote on July 7th that the clapping had stopped a week or so earlier, so maybe your neighborhood kept it going longer?
Avatar 12:34pm Mary Wing:

Heh, I wrote: "Phase 2 of reopening the city means no more love and gratitude for first responders and hospital workers, seriously?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Handy Haversack:

Clapping still going strong on my block. I think there's one apt. that has led the charge -- and has a balcony facing the street.
Avatar 12:37pm TDK60:

I recall it ending by 1st week of Aug. Mary, up here in the Hudson Heights subsection of Washington Heights, Manhattan.
Avatar 12:38pm Mary Wing:

No way, Handy! I am impressed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm fred:

Same here, that applause thing stopped the day the first lockdown was lifted. And some of the people applauding publicly were trying to get health care workers evicted as "health risks" anyway. Shows how heartfelt it was
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Ike:

Wow @Handy, maybe the Sunset Park bagpiper and the Greenpoint bagpiper (you're in Greenpoint right?) need to have Brooklyn Bagpipe-Off (Bag-Off?).
Avatar 12:41pm Mary Wing:

A pipe-down, heh.
Avatar 12:43pm TDK60:

Golly, still going in your hood, Handy. Should still be going, for the whole planet. I would now add the chant: "Out! Demons Out!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Handy Haversack:

I had kept meaning to ask the Hivemind whether it continued in general or was localized to this block. This same bldg. was running an unlicensed video shoot for weeks in the fall that took up a ton of parking spots and frequently had trucks idling for hours at a time. It was the first of the new yuppie condo bldgs. on the block. It's a confusing place.

A friend's car once broke down in its driveway, and a stayed with him while he waited for the AAA tow truck. And I guy from the bldg. came up and asked us how long we were going to be blocking his driveway. I asked him if he needed to get his car out, and he said, "No, but what if I decide I want to later? You going to make me call a tow truck on you? Because I will tow your ass away." I told him if he thought his would get there faster to go for it but otherwise to back the eff off.

I've taken our local piper out canoeing at our public events a few times, Ike! And several times came upon him playing on the creek as we returned from evening paddles, with the sun setting behind Manhattan behind him. Dynamite! He would practice under the Pulaski for the echo.
Swag For Life Member 12:45pm spodiodi:

that Carl Stone was making me doubleplusgood
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Handy Haversack:

*I stayed with him^^^

* a guy^^

Sheesh.
  12:46pm chresti>tennis booth:

Hi Mary and wingdingers!
Swag For Life Member 12:47pm spodiodi:

Swag For Life Member 12:47pm spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Handy Haversack:

It's sticking in my last craw, spodi!
Avatar 12:48pm Roberto:

I was wondering if she'd bring up the factory farming issue. It's a big'un.
Swag For Life Member 12:50pm spodiodi:

i can imagine i'd feel the same way, Handy!
Avatar 12:50pm TDK60:

I'm surprised you got words out, Handy. I would've been laughing. "what if I decide I want to later?" Yuppie scuzbag. \\ // Chresti of the courts.
Avatar 12:50pm Mary Wing:

Hiya Roberto! The Space Lady cares!
Avatar 12:51pm Roberto:

You go, Space Lady.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Handy Haversack:

Right, TDK60?

Hey, chresti!

I also know which yuppie was behind the super annoying video shoot. He was standing outside our window talking ridiculously loud on his cell phone one day early fall about how he was "working hard on the script -- and myself." I aimed Continental Subway out the window and cranked the volume.
Swag For Life Member 12:55pm spodiodi:

i love that, Handy \\//
Avatar 12:55pm TDK60:

You shoulda called in Licensing, Handy. But that mighta meant more idling cars..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Carmichael:

Hey spod, Jamie Curtis looks pissed.
Avatar 12:57pm Mary Wing:

Yeah, what is up with Jaime Lee in that avatar?
Avatar 12:58pm Hubig Pie:

When I get drunk I pick fights with my imaginary friends
Avatar 1:00pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

I don't know this Placebo song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Michael 98145:

sounds like a political position
Avatar 1:01pm Mary Wing:

Good morning Michael 98145!
Avatar 1:01pm Roberto:

Jaime Lee? Is that what she calls herself when she pretends to be from Spain?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Michael 98145:

🔔🎇
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Handy Haversack:

That Placebo song was good -- and brutal.
Avatar 1:05pm Mary Wing:

Yeah, but what does Bosco have to do with it?
Avatar 1:06pm Hubig Pie:

Bosco > Ovaltine
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Handy Haversack:

  1:07pm rw:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Phillippe Bastille:

Firsties! Oh, wait, probably not. Hi everyone! Listening in while freezing my keester off doing yard work
Swag For Life Member 1:08pm spodiodi:

lol aloha, Phillippe Bastille!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Phillippe Bastille:

Crap, missed Placebo. One of my all-time faves!
Hey spodi! Handy!
Swag For Life Member 1:10pm spodiodi:

Carmichael, seriously... i wouldn't mess with her
Avatar 1:10pm Mary Wing:

Hiya Sem, rw, and Phillippe! Happy end of 2020, the animus horribus for all time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, Phillippe!
  1:11pm rw:

I like that Mexican hot chocolate that comes in the hexagonal box.
Avatar 1:11pm TDK60:

Well, '20 wasn't boring, at least. [looks around the room sheepishly under his mask]
Avatar 1:12pm Mary Wing:

Oh, that reminds me, I was talking to a woman originally from Grenada the other day, and at one point she called New Year's Eve "Old Year's Day" which tickled me no end. Has anyone ever heard it called that before, or did she just make that up herself?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Michael 98145:

la mauvaise année est presque finie
  1:13pm rw:

Ha! Old Year's Day. Love it.
  1:13pm Mark R:

Remember the old (Chinese?) curse, TDK--"May you live in interesting times."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Handy Haversack:

I just uploaded to my WFMU profile a couple of comforting pix from our ferry trip to Jersey City on Monday. The station definitely still exists!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Ike:

@Mary, ha! I'm not sure but there might be a Grenadian pirate station somewhere on the dial in the Flatbush area. If there is, it might be worth listening tomorrow to see if any of the DJs call it that!
Avatar 1:15pm Roberto:

This song goes to show that all you need in life is a great bass line.
Swag For Life Member 1:15pm spodiodi:

Mary, i came across that Jamie Lee graphic, after Handy and James got me all excited about Screamapillars... i was closing out tabs, when i noticed the 4-frame Jamie Lee mixed in with the results. i thought it was choice, and snagged it -- was being used as the background on someone's twitter page. later in the day i found the original story on some crap news pub from ~2011 -- it just mentioned she was spotted berating a friend while at lunch, and had each of the 4 pics published along with it www.dailymail.co.uk... Don't mess with Jamie Lee Curtis! Furious actress gives her friend a roasting
Swag For Life Member 1:15pm spodiodi:

i love that one, Mark R
Avatar 1:16pm Mary Wing:

Howdy Mark R! Happy new year, pal!
  1:18pm Mark R:

I think this Sault album is one of 2020's best! Happy Old Year and New Year, Mary!
Avatar 1:18pm TDK60:

Ahh, the Toilet Paper Panic of '20...
Swag For Life Member 1:18pm spodiodi:

i'd never before heard Old Years Day
Avatar 1:21pm Mary Wing:

I am going to make 3 buttons of Jamie Lee's faces when I go to my office next week, heh!
Swag For Life Member 1:21pm spodiodi:

haha sweet :D
  1:22pm Mark R:

I'm sure Jamie Lee would be pleased you're using that face as her avatar 10 years later, Spodi. When we lived in L.A., we were going to enroll our daughter in a preschool and she was the Mom who called all the new families to welcome them. Then we moved, so I never actually met her.
Avatar 1:23pm Mary Wing:

Handy, did you ring the doorbell at the station? I want a night light of that neon sign, I do declare!
Swag For Life Member 1:23pm spodiodi:

i'd like to think Jamie Lee ever thinks about me, Mark R.
did she sound angry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Good morning-ish, Mary!
Avatar 1:24pm Hubig Pie:

The great toilet paper panic of '20 led to a spike in bidet sales
Swag For Life Member 1:25pm spodiodi:

and bidet-chat! cheers, Hubig
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Handy Haversack:

Mary, we dropped off some goodies from Greenpoint -- Polish food, Peter Pan doughnuts, a chocolate-pecan pie that Kate made, and some dog treats. We actually got to *see* Scott W. and Matt W. and ... BRUCE!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Michael 98145:

such a night light would make excellent swag!
Avatar 1:25pm Mary Wing:

And you have my playlist open on one of the pumpkin pictures, Handy!! <3 <3 <3 <3
Avatar 1:25pm Roberto:

Yeah, I was glad my daughter made me buy one of those attachable bidets last year.
Avatar 1:26pm Hubig Pie:

Happy Old Year , Spodiodio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Handy Haversack:

That's right, Mary! From a day that I just found my "desk" set-up hilarious!
Swag For Life Member 1:27pm spodiodi:

i wonder how may kids were named Toto in '20
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

There WAS an 'FMU nightlight for swag a few years back!
Avatar 1:27pm Mary Wing:

Do you like the bidet, Roberto? I am seriously thinking of making the splurge in 2021.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Handy Haversack:

This In-Sone is like they looked at Stereolab and were all "You call *that* bachelor-pad music Space Age?!"
Avatar 1:28pm Roberto:

I do like it. It's especially useful for a grumpy old tuchas like mine.
Avatar 1:28pm Mary Wing:

Hiya S&M&S! Yes, the old FMU night light was just black print on a clear plastic cover, though. I want a colorful nightlight this time!
Avatar 1:31pm TDK60:

Or maybe it's slippergaze, at the space age bach pad?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Ike:

I have an old FMU nightlight! I've rarely ever used it. I just took a look and it still works. It's green on clear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Handy Haversack:

Phillippe, you still here? I saw the first winter bird on the creek today -- a bufflehead! America's smallest and therefore cutest (and most deserving of love) duck!
Swag For Life Member 1:34pm spodiodi:

bufflehead looks dressed to kill too!
Avatar 1:36pm Mary Wing:

Oh, it's green and not black? Maybe I never turned it on, heh. I think there was an earlier one with the radio bear on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Michael 98145:

these are some DRIVING tracks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Ike:

Oh right, the bear! I wonder if I have that one in a box somewhere too.
Swag For Life Member 1:38pm spodiodi:

sounds like Rush crashed the song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Handy Haversack:

I'm sure they were polite about it, spod.
Avatar 1:39pm Mary Wing:

I just tried to find an image of the nightlights, but found the creepy meatball T-shirt instead, ha!

I hope the printed lyrics for this song include lots of 0101010100010101001010101010
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Ike:

That and the Chris Ware "Learn Radio w/Jimmy Corrigan" T-shirts are the creepiest ones, IMHO.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Handy Haversack:

spodi, it's why I don't wear anything else!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm fred:

@Ike: That shirt is indeed old, but holds up surprising well (at least mine does) for such a design. Not even cracked yet. I wish I could say the same for its wearer

Hi, everyone. I stumbled across a robot dance party. www.cnet.com... Where's Liz Berg at?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm ɨkɛ:

@spodiodi@1:52, that little kid saying that is what's creepy about it! Creepier than the meatball IMHO. Some DJ said to me (paraphrased) "it's OK because it's a little kid and another little kid, not an adult" and I was like, uh, I'll just get a warehouse item instead, thanks!
Swag For Life Member 2:00pm spodiodi:

Ike, to me, they don't look like kids -- the bags under the eyes are why
Avatar 2:00pm Mary Wing:

Hi Ken! Ha, robot dance party with actual robots is my kind of party!

Happy birthday, Patti Smith!

Hey there, Lisa. Happy New Year!

"Mary Wing will endorse your product (badly)"
Swag For Life Member 2:05pm spodiodi:

hi Really Lisa!
Avatar 2:05pm TDK60:

Happy birthday Patti S!. I got see her a few years back. It was supposed to be a poetry & acoustic-guitar affair. She came out, said she changed her mind, brought her electric band instead. I said to my sitting neighbor: "Damn, I guess I'll stay anyway."
  2:05pm Really Lisa:

Same to you, Handy, thank you!

Swag For Life Member 2:08pm spodiodi:

very nice, Lisa. i *considered* walking around 7am this morning, but laziness kept me safely under the covers

Back from early 2020, maybe, when putting out Australia was still the big thing going.
Avatar 2:11pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@Really Lisa I'm feeling a bit agitated, I'm blaming this last full moon of the year
Swag For Life Member 2:12pm spodiodi:

Avatar 2:14pm Mary Wing:

Hiya Doug! Happy new year, chief!
  2:14pm Mark R:

My wife and I were eating in a nearly-empty cafe a couple years ago, and Patti was there with a friend. The two women next to us were awestruck, and I overheard them talking, and they said they were too shy and nervous to speak to her, but one of them wrote a note and gave it to the waitress and asked her to give it to Patti, but wait til after they'd left. So they left, the waitress handed Patti the note, who gave it a cursory glance and then promptly crumpled it up and kept talking to her friend. I loved her more than ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm doctorjazz:

Lurking as usual, enjoying the music!
  2:16pm Really Lisa:

Sorry to see, Sylvia. I hope that feeling fades asap!
Avatar 2:17pm Mary Wing:

Cool story, Mark R!

aloha, doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm doctorjazz:

Hey, Spodi!
Avatar 2:27pm Mary Wing:

FYI, the talk of eggnog last week prompted me to buy some, and I have enjoyed a glass EVERY DAY since then, calories be damned!
Avatar 2:29pm Sem:

Rum in that eggnog, Mary?
Avatar 2:30pm Mary Wing:

Not yet, maybe on the Old Year Day, though! Actually I don't have any rum, so it may have to be Kahlua and vodka, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Rum or... cognac, Mary?
Avatar 2:32pm Sem:

Cognac, what a civilized eggnog that would make.
The first one, anyway.
Avatar 2:32pm TDK60:

I'm going eggnog wacky up here. Can you freeze it with good result?
Avatar 2:33pm Mary Wing:

No cognac either, my liquor cabinet is pretty empty, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

@sem, indeed! On both counts!
Avatar 2:35pm Sem:

TDK60, just a quick look at the answer to your question. Seems like only unopened containers can be frozen without trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Handy Haversack:

There was brandy talk on some board or other, which (along with some gifted lemons from a neighbor) prompted a couple of Sidecars over here.

I have a poker game starting in 25 mins. What to drink ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

@TDK - fun fact (as Sylvia likes to), the boozy version of eggnog keeps fine and was indeed made so in pre-refrigeration times
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm ɨkɛ:

I need to find an online poker circle for people who are absolutely terrible at poker, LOL.
Avatar 2:39pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

if you freeze eggnog you may end up with vanilla icecream imo
Avatar 2:39pm TDK60:

Thanks Sem and Summer/Mike/Sylvia. I may try it once. A day approaches soon when the cruel neoliberal system removes eggnog from the shelves, around Jan 2. or so. I /know/ they are out to disappoint me.
Avatar 2:40pm Mary Wing:

Yeah, it disappears so quickly off the shelves, which is probably a good thing because I would drink it all damn year otherwise.
Avatar 2:42pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@TDK60 I make this recipe of eggnog, easy peasy thecrumbykitchen.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

@TDK - Sylvia is aghast at your calling Michael "Mike" - ha!
Avatar 2:43pm TDK60:

Thanks Sylvia in Franceland. Will look at that recipe later. Never thought of doing it myself; I'm a New Yorker ya know.
Swag For Life Member 2:43pm spodiodi:

Ike, let me know when you do. i'm beyond bad at almost any card game
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Handy Haversack:

Ha, TDK60, I was thinking that yesterday when people were recommending making their own pizza crusts and the like on Michele's board: but I'm a New Yorker! We have tiny kitchens but the trade-off is restaurants everywhere! Let the pros do it!

And then basked in the comforting knowledge that there's a pizza place at either end of my block!
Avatar 2:47pm Mary Wing:

Truth, who has room for all the cooking gear needed for home-made things like bread and pizza? I will pay others to make it!
  2:48pm Mark R:

Mary, who was it who circulated that story recently entitled "Charles Mingus's Eggnog Recipe Will Knock You on Your Ass"? The recipe called for A LOT of alcohol, but the author claimed it was delicious, which of course makes it much more likely to knock you on your ass, since you can easily drink more than you ought to. Remember when John Lennon got thrown out of that Smothers Brothers club date? He said he'd spent the afternoon with his usual L.A. crowd of drinking buddies (Nilsson, Elton, Ringo, Moonie) and he'd never had a Brandy Alexander before (I found that hard to believe, but whatever), and they tasted like milkshakes, so he was slamming them down, and by the time he and Harry got to the Smothers Brothers show, he was totally plastered and just spouting off really loud in the middle of their show, saying stuff like, "Dickie Smothers is an asshole."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Handy Haversack:

We bake one thing a year, Sylvia -- a chocolate-pecan pie for Thanksgiving. Kate made an extra one to give to WFMU this year, and that should sort us for baking until November 2021.
