Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Handy Haversack:

Oh, Mary, a question I keep forgetting to ask you: Do you know what happened to the band Novella? We picked up their albums this summer, but the most recent is 2017, nothing since. Do you know if they endure?

Lisa, spodi, Tardy Bastille, Sylvia, βrian, fred, David: to all: yo!
Avatar 12:04pm βrian:

Just noticed some gravlax and capers in the fridge. Sandwiches for lunch, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Phillippe Bastille:

would the winds associated with this storm be called Gale Winds, Gail Winds, or Gail Gale Winds?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Handy Haversack:

And sleet for dessert!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey spodiodi. Hope all's safe and well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Phillippe Bastille:

sleet and ice are likely all we'll get
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm fred:

I went to Paris for the first time in a month and a half. Weird seeing all the bars closed. I never realized how many bars there are in this city
Swag For Life Member 12:07pm spodiodi:

i'm ready for snow, but i'm expecting none :-B
Avatar 12:07pm Mary Wing:

Salut Fred, aussi!
Avatar 12:08pm Mary Wing:

Mmmmmm, egg nog, I am so ready for it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Handy Haversack:

There are a few bars in Paris I would happily teleport to the instant I am vaccinated.
Avatar 12:09pm βrian:

I imagine a Parisian bar sans fumée would be quite nice.
Avatar 12:09pm Sem:

Hello, Mary, and greets to the 100% from the suddenly polar shores of the mighty frigid Bay of Fundy, -10C and wind today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Phillippe Bastille:

Is that little bar still there on Wagram? I forget what it's called or exactly where it's at. On the other side of the street probably.
Swag For Life Member 12:10pm spodiodi:

greetings, S'em
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm fred:

@Handy: double check before teleporting, the way it's going they might have turned into real estate agencies
Avatar 12:10pm Mary Wing:

Howdy Sem! Get thee to the long johns drawer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm David (in London):

I'm braced for more of this delightful drizzle we've been having.

All hail the (rather chilly) Semulator.
Avatar 12:12pm βrian:

I remember that when it was going to hit 20 below, I needed to place a garbage bag full of warm water over the truck battery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Handy Haversack:

βrian, we went to Paris when we were first together, me and Kate, in 2000. I had won some money, and it was the first time I ever left the country. We went back in 2016 for the first time, and by dead reckoning, I found a bar we had loved on the first trip. There was a major heat wave going on, and when a set of music ended, it seemed like the entire bar got up to outside and smoke. I had quit smoking just five months before, and I was still feeling it pretty bad. When the bar emptied, I said to the (very pretty) bartender, "Tout le monde fume, et moi, je ne fume plus." And she reached out, cupped my cheek, and said, "Ah! Le pauvre!"

Which I very much enjoyed.
Avatar 12:13pm Hubig Pie:

Leave it to Ivan the Tolerable to perform the most tolerable of Christmas carols
Avatar 12:14pm Sem:

Right you are , Mary. Trap door in the back and all.
Hello, DiL, into each life a little....

Yo, the 'spod'di.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Mary, Handy, Spodi, everybody, hi! Sitting here with a shawl over my shoulders, so nice and cosy.

This carol is wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm fred:

@Phillippe: Wagram is way too upscale for me. My tip for people coming to Paris is to take a side street from the big ones, then a side street to that. Chances are you'll find a nice place that caters to "the help". But stay on the main streets if showing off and paying a lot is your thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Handy Haversack:

(Gotta make the lunch salad now but can't take the speaker with me because Kate's teaching. Wednesday keeps messing with me!)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Phillippe Bastille:

@fred that's pretty much what we did. We walked up to the touristy part for a day or two, spent the rest of the time walking in the opposite direction. Absolutely loved it. Best vacation ever.
Avatar 12:20pm Mary Wing:

Handy, re: Novella, I don't see anything new since 2017 either, and their Facebook page seems pretty sparse, so I'm guessing they are on hiatus for now.
Swag For Life Member 12:20pm spodiodi:

Revolution Rabbit -- sweet little ditty :)

Thanks for the Novella info, Mary! Love those two albums.
  12:33pm David in London:

I was in a small record store in Hayling Island in October, and they had a poster in the window for a local all-female Slade tribute act called Slady. They looked ace.
Swag For Life Member 12:34pm spodiodi:

haha
Avatar 12:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I shall lay back & think of England.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm fred:

I wish there would be a band by Black women covering Black Flag. There's probably at least one out there. Probably better at puns that I am too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Carmichael:

OK, made it off of Skype. Good morning Mary and 100 percenters.

Good morning-ish, Mary! And all Whatever'ers! Ready for some snow, everybody?!
Swag For Life Member 12:44pm spodiodi:

Avatar 12:45pm Hubig Pie:

I learned on Jeopardy last night that Brian Jones was a skilled marimba player
Avatar 12:45pm Mary Wing:

Hello S&M&S! Feeling better this week?
  12:47pm Dean:

Per CD's liner notes, "Michi" is for solo marimba.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, Carmichael.
Avatar 12:48pm Mary Wing:

That was Brian Jones playing marimba on Under My Thumb, then?
  12:49pm wfmu listener phillip:

"ready for some snow?" sorry NO.i dont like snow. matter of fact I hate snow!
Swag For Life Member 12:49pm spodiodi:

good morning, Carmichael, S&M&S, Dean, ike, maestro
Avatar 12:49pm Hubig Pie:

According to the writers of the Jeopardy it was indeed, Mary
  12:50pm Dean:

G'morning, all.
Avatar 12:51pm Mary Wing:

And hello Ike and Dean!

I should've checked the liner notes, my bad, heh. It didn't even sound like a vibraphone, really.
  12:51pm David in London:

What’s your clearance Clarence?
Hey S&M&S.
Avatar 12:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Blacker ...Blackest Flag...
Yeah Brian was like his fellow Pisces George in the Fabs : bringing instruments & textures that could go below radar while the upfront Writer Singers do their thing...
Avatar 12:52pm Hubig Pie:

The clue said Mr Jones was a multi-instrumentalist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Carmichael:

He also played the sitar in Paint It Black.
Avatar 12:54pm Hubig Pie:

I liking this Karsh Kay-lee
Avatar 12:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...not like he Mastered each one. Dylan said Mr.Jones could describe the dif styles of all the Bluesmen & demonstrate on gittar - & he's never seen anybody else do that. Has to be a reason Dylan & Hendrix had time for Brian...
Avatar 12:56pm Mary Wing:

Heh, or maybe Brian just had some good drugs?
Avatar 12:56pm Hubig Pie:

Anyone can play guitar
Cept Mick Jagger, of course
Avatar 12:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

As they say in SubGenius - why not both.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Yes, Mary, thank you! Hi, David!
  12:58pm David in London:

Ollie Halsall was a vibraphone specialist before he came the greatest guitarist of all time (IMHO) in only three years.
Avatar 1:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ollie...noted !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Phillippe Bastille:

Ok, heading in for lunch. Who needs what?
  1:04pm David in London:

Rev, I know you like you gee-tar. Give Patto’s ‘Loud Green Song’ a try to hear Ollie having absolute digital epilepsy. He’d only picked up a guitar for the first time about three years earlier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Hi, Spodiodi!
  1:05pm wfmu listener phillip:

OMG! WHAT! harold budd died? oh wow I'm in shock now.

Avatar 1:06pm Mary Wing:

Yes, he died last week, so sad.
Avatar 1:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Something to be said for beginner's mind! & being fresh. Also coming from another instrument sometimes gives another angle... The right Artist finding the right Medium is a glorious thing...
  1:08pm wfmu listener phillip:

I'm stunned! I have literally gigabytes of his music on my ipod touch and soundtracks too

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm fred:

Back when I was allowed to have friends, one of them was a huge fan on In C and collected versions (not sure you could fit 3 in a 3OAK segment though). I wish I could ask him about this one, though maybe I did back then
  1:27pm Really Lisa:

Handy, indeed. I don't treat myself often. So my digital stocking now includes some Bipolar Explorer :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Ike:

I am the bastard child of Fabio and Creamo? Never would have guessed THOSE two, heh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Handy Haversack:

Creamobio!

Sounds kinda gross, really.

Mary, some time you should do fill-ins on either side of your show and do three 3OAKs with songs like this that could never fit into a three-hour time slot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Rock Ridge Chess Club:

What a great set! Thank you Mary
  1:36pm Dean:

Fabioyle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm fred:

Thanks, Rock Ridge Chess Club! I'm just sitting here eating my lunch, though.
Avatar 1:39pm Mary Wing:

Avatar 1:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm fred:

FXO and Irene makes sense. Weirdness and control (though not inheriting the reverb gene)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm fred:

I miss FXO

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm fred:

In C looks like a worthy candidate
Avatar 1:45pm Hubig Pie:

Rock Ridge has a chess club?
According to the Cisco Kid, they all morons
  1:45pm Dean:

I spent most of Saturday listening to multiple recordings of Bach's second French Suite. Very rewarding.
  1:47pm Dean:

Not all at one time, though that might have been fun, too.
Avatar 1:47pm Hubig Pie:

Waco Kid, I should have said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm fred:

Rhys Chatham's guitar trio could be worthy of consideration
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

We like the Irene angle, too, Mary! <3
Avatar 1:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Phillippe Bastille:

a stunning set/pair, Mary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Phillippe Bastille:

  2:12pm David in London:

They had to settle with Wire for lifting the riff from Three Girl Rhumba too as I recall.
Avatar 2:13pm Mary Wing:

Yes, they were totally derivative, but I love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Phillippe Bastille:

Love it regardless who wrote it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Handy Haversack:

Should have changed their names to the Highwaypeople, David!
  2:15pm David in London:

They’ve actually worn better than a lot of bands from that era I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm fred:

I think most of the best music is derivative. It's incremental. There are lightning strikes, but these are sparks, not building blocks
Avatar 2:20pm Mary Wing:

I saw them again last year supporting Alice Cooper and they were stunning, still.

Mad Bass. Wrench in the theory that musicianship & attitude can't mix.
  2:26pm David in London:

Mary, and JJ’s bass sound.
Avatar 2:26pm Hubig Pie:

First song I heard by The Stranglers was Bring on the Nubiles
Avatar 2:26pm Mary Wing:

And here's another one with the same riff, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Phillippe Bastille:

Welp, snow/sleet has changed over to rain. Looks like the yucky stuff is done here. Good luck guys! ({claps hands together in "all done" gesture}
Avatar 2:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Tuneyards from up north Vermont?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm fred:

@Phillppe Bastille: so you don't have to shovel anything? Looks like a major win
Avatar 2:35pm Mary Wing:

I don't know where Tune-Yards call home, RevRab, maybe?
Avatar 2:35pm Hubig Pie:

Webz say no - Oakland...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Handy Haversack:

The first tendril of wintry death looks to be reaching toward north Brooklyn right now. Gonna top up a couple of the bird feeders and secure the other two under the table. I laid in bird seed even before spinach and beer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Phillippe Bastille:

doesn't look like it, fred. It may turn back to snow tonight, but we aren't expecting more than an inch if that happens. Certainly hope that's how it works out. We have a brick walkway which is a total pain in the butt to shovel.
Avatar 2:38pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Good grief, I haven't tuned into Live EmWing in fifteen thousand years.
Avatar 2:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Affernoon RTD !
Avatar 2:40pm Mary Wing:

Th'RevDruid! I've been a shriveled mess of bones, lo these 15 thousand years waiting on you, I declare.
Avatar 2:40pm Mary Wing:

ATTENTION, NEW EELS!

I SAY, NEW EELS!!!
Avatar 2:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...we brought her back JurrasicPark style...
Avatar 2:41pm Sem:

Three inches or higher for me, thx, Mary.
Avatar 2:41pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

A good bone mess should never go to waste!

A lovely playlist here. Long time since Karsh Kale was spinn'd.

Evening Reverend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Handy Haversack:

Thousands of new eels came to attention when Mary yelled!

Rev TD, hey there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Phillippe Bastille:

eels so new they're still under warranty
Avatar 2:46pm Hubig Pie:

All these years I pronounce his last name Kay-lee. I be a big dope
Avatar 2:47pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

the moray the merrier, eel-wise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Phillippe Bastille:

love that new eel smell
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Handy Haversack:

Eel wise but ale foolish, that's me all the way down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Ike:

Dammit, I went to look for an avocado and ginger beer and I missed new Eels! And I didn't even find an avocado! (Not a parody of Handy's "spinach and beer" comment from earlier, I swear. Well, except for the ginger beer. I didn't actually look for one of those.)
  2:48pm David in London:

Liked that Ivy muchly.
Avatar 2:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hell - stuff I used to only read about in MOJO - suddenly was being streamed straight into me on FMU
...& places I liked to get MOJO closed one by one...
Avatar 2:49pm Mary Wing:

Is it Kay-lee, Hubig? I naturally presumed it was just Kale. I could be wrong; would not be the first time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Phillippe Bastille:

gotta step out early. Thanks so much Mary! Go out and have a snowball fight!
Avatar 2:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Kale - spinach - avo
...& one fresh eel if it please your majesty...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

In Welsh, it's spelled Kaledh, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Handy Haversack:

L8r on, Phillippe!

Thanks, Mary! This was great! Despite the encroaching tendrils of wintry death, even!

See you later, Winged Dings! Be well.
