Hi Larry & everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Funky16Corners:

@Brian - We got almost no snow, but we're right neext to the ocean so we tend to miss these big snow events
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Matt!

Avatar 3:09pm Vincent The Soul Chef:

Still frantically looking for that Al Hirt record too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Matt from New Orleans:

Hey Vincent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Funky16Corners:

Did you ever imagine that there would be an Al Hirt album that was hard to find? You can thank De La for that.
Avatar 3:10pm Sem:

Hiya, Larry, and Testifiers. Cooking, and listening to the cookin'.
Avatar 3:10pm Hubig Pie:

Me thinks that a judge ruled Sugarhill records owed some royalties and instead they declared bankruptcy, is that close to right ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Sem!
Avatar 3:10pm Erica:

Hi Testifiers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Funky16Corners:

HubigPie! Erica!
Avatar 3:11pm Erica:

Ready for the Sample show part 1
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Funky16Corners:

@HubigPie - I don't know any details about that, but it's so early in the sampling days anything is possible
Avatar 3:13pm Erica:

Happy whatever night of Hanukkah left Larry! Haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Erica!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Matt from New Orleans:

Larry there’s a DJ night in Brooklyn called Soul in the Horn founded by Natasha Diggs & DProsper
Avatar 3:13pm Erica:

I lost count Larry. Sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - Cool! I didn't know that
Avatar 3:14pm northguineahills:

Larry and Testifyers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Matt from New Orleans:

Tonight’s the last night Erica. It’s number 8.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Funky16Corners:

NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Mike Sin:

Close mics on the drums in the '70s really lent itself to sampling. Push up that low end and bass drum pounds!
Avatar 3:16pm Erica:

Thanks Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Mike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Yvang:

A french rapper sampled "Me & The Biz" as well in the nineties www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Funky16Corners:

@Yvang - When I was doing research I was shocked on how many of the sampling songs were themselves sampled
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm doctorjazz:

We got about 5 inches of snow-not as bad as the prediction, but still a pain to clear this morning. (I try to remember being a kid and happy that it snowed).
Avatar 3:19pm SquigY0:

hi Larry! I'm ready to sample your warez
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Yvang:

First and second hand samples...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm doctorjazz:

Last night of Chanukah, hopefully my daughter will make latkes again (she's been raising my cholesterol all week).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm doctorjazz:

I get to look cool when my daughter is listening to current pop, and I tell her what they sampled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm doctorjazz:

Saw Liquid Liquid in the 80s, at Danceteria, I believe.
Avatar 3:23pm northguineahills:

*drools* latkes (the only decent jewish deli here is temporarily closed and thrice as expensive as NYC anyways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Funky16Corners:

SquigY0!
Avatar 3:24pm northguineahills:

I saw Liquid Liquid when they reformed in around 2012.
Avatar 3:25pm SquigY0:

*bows*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - No latkes yet this year... (sad face)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm dutchtheo:

This Shack up was covered by A Certain Ratio.
That was James Black, drumming with Eddie & Inez
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Funky16Corners:

BTW My in-laws live up by Albany, they got 27 inches of snow.
Avatar 3:26pm SquigY0:

that's like a Tuesday for Albany though ain't it? :D
  3:26pm CalZone!:

Howdy LG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Funky16Corners:

Well, they generally get a lot more than we do, but that was severe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Funky16Corners:

Cal!
Avatar 3:27pm Erica:

The Magic Number by De la Soul also sampled Peg by Steely Dan.
Avatar 3:27pm SquigY0:

HA! nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Funky16Corners:

California, knows how to party!
Avatar 3:28pm northguineahills:

Put as if I wrote it myself, Larry! (except, I got to funk via hiphop)
Avatar 3:28pm Erica:

Sorry my post took too long.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm doctorjazz:

Home have are the best (but Trader Joe's will do in a pinch).
One great thing about having my daughter shelter with us on the COVID world, after fleeing Manhattan, is that she loves to cook.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Funky16Corners:

Maybe I'll do latkes next week
Avatar 3:30pm northguineahills:

I randomly djed w/ Martin Moscrop of A Certain Ratio. I showed up, and my dj partner said, you have no idea who's going on after us!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Funky16Corners:

That's cool!
Avatar 3:32pm SquigY0:

oh what's Golden is a jam. as is this! though so bassy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Funky16Corners:

Love Jurassic 5!
Avatar 3:34pm northguineahills:

(for y'alls out there, cook/dj for hire. you just have to put up w/ my quips). Will work to get the bloody hell out of FL.
Avatar 3:34pm SquigY0:

I'm trying to get INTO FL. perhaps we should trade :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Funky16Corners:

I'm worried that when it all goes to shit Florida is going to be all retirees and secessionist kooks
Avatar 3:35pm northguineahills:

I have some Jurassic 5 on wax for sale.

Sounds fair, SquigY0!
Avatar 3:35pm SquigY0:

certainly won't be boring company :D
Avatar 3:36pm northguineahills:

FL will be back in the blue once the retirees die off....
Avatar 3:37pm northguineahills:

The cities here are actually nice, but once you step outside, it's either Karen suburbia or the deep south.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Funky16Corners:

It's like that outside of Atlanta, too. I was shocked at how quickly the landscape devolved once you drove out of town
Avatar 3:38pm SquigY0:

one day Karen's gonna speak up for herself
Avatar 3:38pm SquigY0:

...to your manager
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm doctorjazz:

All right, time for my MRI, catch y'all later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Funky16Corners:

Central NJ is a native habitat for the wild Karen
Avatar 3:39pm SquigY0:

gl doc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Funky16Corners:

Good luck, Doc!
Avatar 3:39pm Erica:

Karen suburbia? I'll bet all those people would want to speak with your manager. Haha!
Avatar 3:39pm SquigY0:

good thing is limited managers so they gonna have to wait, then will want to speak to your manager's manager cause they had to wait so long
Avatar 3:40pm Erica:

The only Karen memes I like are the cat Karen memes.
Avatar 3:42pm Erica:

"Where's your spray bottle now Karen?"
Avatar 3:42pm SquigY0:

Also a Terrentino favorite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Funky16Corners:

Yes!
Avatar 3:43pm Erica:

Kill Bill.
Avatar 3:44pm Vincent The Soul Chef:

Also sampled by Above The Law on "Untouchable"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Chef! Please fee free to add on if I missed anything important.
Avatar 3:51pm northguineahills:

I've mentioned it before, but Gainesville is the libbiest lib town I lived in (and I lived in Brooklyn). But, once you go outside city limits, it's Deliverance Kuntry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Funky16Corners:

It's that way in a lot of places, and the MAGATS talk about the cities like they don't count. I wonder why...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Funky16Corners:

This is my favorite break of all time. I was shocked when I finally picked up the LP how different the track is compared to the 45
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Funky16Corners:

Wisconsin's own, Harvey Scales!
Avatar 3:58pm northguineahills:

I suppose we're going to get the Amen of all Amen breaks....
Avatar 3:59pm Sem:

Saw recently a short video on the Amen break. Now your show. On a roll!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Funky16Corners:

Not this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Brian in UK:

Is this an advertisement for Hades?
Avatar 4:00pm northguineahills:

@Sem: jinx!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Funky16Corners:

Hell would never be this funky...
Avatar 4:00pm Sem:

Maybe for dancing fools, BiUK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Funky16Corners:

BTW, if you're not suitably funked up, the next track will do the trick
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Brian in UK:

Tony Toni Tone's Sons of Soul is a bit hit in this house. I couldn't keep it to myself.
Avatar 4:02pm SquigY0:

oh man, I've been trying to funk responsibly!!
Avatar 4:03pm northguineahills:

No one else gets my Tony Toni Tone jokes/references.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Brian in UK:

My ex girlfriend is a whore, cracks me up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm dreamyandseedy:

NOTHING can touch ZAPP
Avatar 4:05pm Erica:

Sorry we don't ngh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Funky16Corners:

BTW the vocoder guy on this track is Roger Troutman, who appears on California Love by Tupac and Dr Dre
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Dreamy!
Avatar 4:05pm SquigY0:

NICE!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm dreamyandseedy:

those first 2 ZAPP albums, every single track!!!! so damn good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Funky16Corners:

Absolutely! I have to shout out to my man Chris in DC who put me onto Zapp back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’m not sure I ever read why Larry, his brother, shot Roger and then killed himself
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, very sad story
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Brian in UK:

Shake it like a polaroid picture and get sued.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm dreamyandseedy:

if anyone follows dust to digital on IG they had a cool video of Roger singing part of I heard it thru the grapevine, he was wearing this stunning gold outfit
Avatar 4:11pm northguineahills:

I borrowed my bros' Disney + (I think it was that streaming service), just to see the Beastie Boys doc).
Avatar 4:11pm northguineahills:

@Brian: Like Atlanta's finest, the Outkast?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Funky16Corners:

I have Disney +, I'll have to look for that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Brian in UK:

Thought Ms Jackson was in Alabama.
Avatar 4:13pm northguineahills:

@Larry: Make sure you have tissues around, (for joy and sorrow).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Funky16Corners:

I believe that.
Avatar 4:14pm northguineahills:

Ms Jackson, is supposed to take place in AL, but the OutKast are definitely from the home the dirty South, ATL...
Avatar 4:16pm SquigY0:

bonus Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Brian in UK:

Larry, now you mention it I used to have Smack Water Jack. Wherediditgo?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Brian in UK:

Is that Cheech & Chong?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Funky16Corners:

The title "adapted" from Cheech and Chong
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Funky16Corners:

BTW this is Chuck Brown's Soul Searchers, later pioneers of the Go Go movement in DC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Funky16Corners:

I really cannot understand how this song was not a huge hit
Avatar 4:24pm SquigY0:

questionable subject matter in the title?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Funky16Corners:

Maybe, but it was the 70s where you could walk into any mainstream shopping mall and buy a roach clip, so who knows
Avatar 4:25pm northguineahills:

I might have to scour this playlist later to see if I have any of these rekkids, still (to sell)
Avatar 4:25pm Vincent The Soul Chef:

This LP still eludes me, although I do have all the singles from it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Funky16Corners:

Here it comes...
Avatar 4:26pm SquigY0:

there's dat beat!
Avatar 4:26pm northguineahills:

I thought a roach clip was just a bobby pin...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Funky16Corners:

Lots of biggies to come next week, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Hi Larry, late but love what I'm hearing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm doctorjazz:

Just finished, haven't had one of those yet (closed mri), man, terrible, endless test. If you ever need one (the closed, whole body kind), I recommend learning/practicing meditation. I think you that's what got me through without asking for a break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Hopey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - I have a tendency to claustrophobia. The idea of a closed MRI gives me the chills
Avatar 4:29pm Erica:

Hi Hopey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Funky16Corners:

Here's an example of a record that was not only sampled dozens and dozens of times, but also imitated/re-created widely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Funky16Corners:

The drums in Fools Gold by the Stone Roses for instance
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm doctorjazz:

I'm not so claustrophobic, but that can make one claustrophobic. And, it was ordered for lower back pain-it required lying on my back on exactly the spot that hurts. Just did my breathing, counted/focused on my breathing, I think it really helped.
Avatar 4:34pm Vincent The Soul Chef:

Oh, I should add that none other than Peter Murphy also sampled "Ashley's Roachclip" on "Roll Call Pt. 2" in 1989...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Funky16Corners:

Really!?!? I'll have to look for that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Brian in UK:

doctorjazz, did they let you take some music into the chamber?
Avatar 4:36pm Vincent The Soul Chef:

@Larry: Yep, on the album "Deep"... or the 12" single for "Cuts You Up"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Oh wow, I haven't heard Misdemeanor in YEARS. Great pick, Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Funky16Corners:

Such a great record!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Brian in UK:

Two Fools Gold bands. First supporting the much maligned Dan Fogelberg. Second from the West, great African rhythms and singing in Hebrew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Funky16Corners:

I wrote up the Foster Sylvers track a while back: funky16corners.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm doctorjazz:

@BiUK, nope! They gave me headphones that I assume was to block out some of the noise (didn't seem to, but I didn't try with them off), but no music (20 years ago I had an mri of my knee, not as bad. First, only the one goes in the machine. And they did let me bring music to listen to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Phillippe Bastille:

howdy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Brian in UK:

I am seeing Jeremy's flute as a snake charmer and the womans legs as the snake. do I need a laydown?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Funky16Corners:

Did anyone see this used in Shrek as the Pied Piper's music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Phillippe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Funky16Corners:

Shrek, of course, written by Jeremy Steig's father, William Steig
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Funky16Corners:

@Brian - I see that as an acceptable explanation
Avatar 4:45pm northguineahills:

Any Dilla samples?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Funky16Corners:

Not that I know of
Avatar 4:49pm northguineahills:

I know I have hiphop that sampled the Beach Boys, but, I don't have access to my rekkids, and the track is eluding my brain...
Avatar 4:49pm Vincent The Soul Chef:

I still say that the UK remix of "Pump Up The Volume" is far superior to the US version...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Funky16Corners:

Did someone sample 'Do It Again' by the Beach Boys?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Funky16Corners:

@Vincent - LOVE Pump Up the Volume
Avatar 4:53pm northguineahills:

@Vincent: I have that version! (UK)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm dutchtheo:

Thanks, Larry! Air.. www.whosampled.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Brian in UK:

I was blown away when I realised that I had one track on DJ Shadow's Entroducing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Funky16Corners:

A lot of that Shadow stuff is unspeakably obscure.
Avatar 4:56pm Vincent The Soul Chef:

@ northguineahills: Yup. 4AD catalog no. BAD 707R... it's the only one that matters :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Brian in UK:

The album was barely released over here so how did he hear it. Completely nuts, bit like this station!
Avatar 4:58pm Vincent The Soul Chef:

Another fantastic show! I hope I'm off next Thursday :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Matt from New Orleans:

Thanks Larry. Great stuff. Looking forward to part 2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Yvang:

Thanks Larry for unearthing the roots!
Avatar 4:59pm northguineahills:

Thanks Larry!
Avatar 5:00pm Erica:

Can't wait for part 2 either Matt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Great show! I look forward to listening to the whole thing in the archives.
Avatar 5:00pm northguineahills:

Oh, yeah, I have psyche record mix by Shadow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Brian in UK:

The crazy English took Endtroducing out live.

Thanks Larry.
