Matt, don't recall that part. It was the "5D" tour, with older tunes too. Allen Ginsberg was in the audience. I was 15.

Petty opened his 1989 show I saw with Feel a whole lot better, great
  3:23pm zmzm:

American Dreamer....
Avatar 3:23pm Ross T.:

Need that dose of Rickenbacker.
Avatar 3:26pm TDK60:

You can hear Byrds influence on the first Love LP, also maybe Seeds? Hee.
Avatar 3:27pm Woo:

I liked the first Manassas album, never heard the second one.
Avatar 3:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I think of Love as exactly in between bYRdS & doors.
Avatar 3:28pm Joe B:

woo, don't bother with the second one!
  3:28pm bbyrno:

hey- listening in to hear the cribs live - is that happening today?? so excited :)
Avatar 3:29pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@bbyrno: Yes! Cribs live set coming up a bit later in the show!
  3:29pm P-90:

The guys in Yes always say that The Byrds were a big influence in them in their early days, but one their fans never recognize.
  3:30pm Miles:

"Stellar !" ** ( said w my bEst Brando impersonation )
  3:31pm MFlynn:

Geez this stuff is fabulous!
  3:31pm bbyrno:

yay! thank you!! your show is the BEST how on earth did you get them?? so cool <3<3<3
Avatar 3:32pm Matt Clarke:

P-90: They did cover "I See You." Maybe a more subtle influence than just having a jangling Rickenbacker guitar.
  3:33pm J&E in Ithaca NY:

This is another one with another version released at same time if not mistaken? A little more stripped down?
Avatar 3:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

the bYRdS for those few most crucial years were like a Rawk Miles Davis - riding & driving the changes & evolutions. Bands tend to be like The Beatles, Stones, Who - or bYRdS... They define a specific kind of Kewl - a particular unique harmonic Transcendence both Futuristically streamlined & warm in Tradition...
Avatar 3:35pm Matt Clarke:

J&E: There are a few versions with just Gram singing out there
Avatar 3:35pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@J&E in Ithaca NY: Pretty sure the alternate versions of "Sweetheart..." songs came out later.
  3:35pm J&E in Ithaca NY:

Thanks Matt! That’s the one I was recalling
Avatar 3:35pm Hoboken Jack:

Here for the Desert Rose Band
  3:35pm Jett:

Love the Byrds, one of my fave groups of all time, all incarnations.
  3:36pm P-90:

Steve Howe said that practically everyone in the late-60s London music scene was smitten by The Byrds. Which is cool because the guys in The Byrds had been smitten by the early-60s London music scene.
  3:37pm Miles:

you're one silly Billy, toddo
Avatar 3:37pm TDK60:

I also saw the earlier Turn! Turn! Turn! tour, a year earlier (but didn't want to overload folks' brains above all at once).
Avatar 3:38pm Matt Clarke:

@TDK60: Was Gene still with them?
Avatar 3:38pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@TDK60: You could give Sal Maida a run for the money!
  3:38pm Jett:

Also love the Flying Burrito Brothers with Gram. Great!
Avatar 3:40pm TDK60:

Yes, Matt. Syria Theater, Newark. Dillards opened.
Avatar 3:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Burritos in a sort of tug of war with Keith Richards for Gram Parsons' presence - is my understanding...
Avatar 3:41pm Ross T.:

Folk Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Country Rock all in the best sense given to us by the Byrds.
Avatar 3:41pm Creature Boy:

I think my favorite Chris Hillman penned song is Mack The Knife
Avatar 3:41pm Matt Clarke:

@TDK60: Holy cow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm JohnEBGood:

Go Todd and Chriss. Country Pop ruled around 1975. Delta Dawn, Rhinestone Cowboy, Charly Pride,.
Avatar 3:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hell The Beatles came to the bYRdS for their 1st voluntary acid trip.
Avatar 3:42pm Ross T.:

Yes first Manassas is terrific.
Avatar 3:43pm Matt Clarke:

1st Burritos LP is just tops
Avatar 3:43pm TDK60:

Yeh Matt, I like Burritos too.
Avatar 3:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Flawless.
  3:44pm morphe':

There was a cover band in Bat Ridge Bklyn - 1970s (late)... The Slugs???

Avatar 3:46pm Creature Boy:

Chris Hillman painted that Valley Forge pic didn't he?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Alex of Chicago:

RIP, Charlie Pride.
  3:47pm Sid Griffin:

Todd, cool show! The Pretty Things and The Action both covered the Hillman-era Byrds a fair bit. Most of the songs on Gilded Palace Of Sin were sped up by producer Larry Marks, hence the Gram/Chris harmonies on Devil In Disguise being a bit Alvin & The Chipmunks. The Byrds' version of Miles Davis' Milestones was said to be quite good by producer Gary Usher but Lord knows where it is now. I would kill to hear it...only heard the little bit on that SongMakers TV special. Play some bluegrass, Todd, how about Chris' band The Hillmen? C'mon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Corey:

Afternoon Todd and listeners! Psyched for this one!

  3:50pm David in London:

Hey Mariano.
Avatar 3:50pm Creature Boy:

I didn't realize Larry Marks produced that 1st burritos LP ! the beach boy??
  3:50pm Sid Griffin:

Joe B, did not know Charley Pride was in the NY Yankee system. Cool. Hi Todd! Hi too, Dennis Diken. It is bone cold here in England. Love the show. Chris, I swear to God here, gave me mandolin lessons and he was a great teacher. I filmed two of them. Love these comments too. Erudite listenership!

'Afternoon/evening, Hoboken Jack, David.
  3:52pm MFlynn:

Great Tune Jack! I thought this was Nick Lowe’s song! I’m always wrong.
  3:52pm Rick A.:

I have never heard any songs by The Desert Rose Band. Supposedly, this was Hillman's most financially successful band. It seems heavy on the 80s production.
Avatar 3:53pm Ross T.:

John Hiatt cover
Avatar 3:53pm Creature Boy:

You are now required to play a track by The Hillmen next week toddo . I'm accepting the challenge on your behalf

Avatar 3:53pm Joe B:

@Sid - yes, the Boise Yankees in the early 50s!
Avatar 3:53pm Matt Clarke:

This was a definite highlight of the new LP
  3:54pm SeanG:

John Hiatt rules
Avatar 3:54pm Joe B:

internet says he had a tryout with the Mets and Reds also in '62
  3:54pm Rick A.:

How about something from the Rice, Rice, Hillman, and Pederson albums of pure bluegrass? Their cover of "Friend of the Devil" is really good.
  3:55pm Kuba:

Hello! Greetings from Poland everyone!
  3:55pm Sid Griffin:

The Boise Yankees! I saw Manhattan Yankees, Staten Island Yankees, and a tiny farm team in Virginia who were the Yankees. Never known about the Boise Yankees. Chuck Conners was in the Angels system as I recall and yes, Todd, I will try to stick with music here. I saw Desert Rose twice, they had a lot more grease live than the rather polished C&W hits they enjoyed.
Avatar 3:57pm Joe B:

Chris' bidin' my time album is really good

  4:05pm David in London:

Morphester. My friend John actually lives on Croxted Road, so next time I’m down that way...

Forgive me for keeping the British end up... The Downliner Sect actually released a ‘country rock’ album in 1965, their second, The Country Sect. I believe I’m right in saying that Gram himself actually acknowledged it as the first country rock record. Do shoot me down if I’m wrong on that.
Avatar 4:06pm Woo:

What about Nesmith?
Avatar 4:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sect also did a Lou Reed tune!
Avatar 4:08pm Ross T.:

For what it's worth Rock and Roll comes from Country (and the Blues and so on).
Avatar 4:09pm Matt Clarke:

Woah Beau Brummels mention!
Avatar 4:09pm Woo:

Brummelstones!
  4:10pm Sid Griffin:

Man, Hillman sounds great tonight. Really good stories. Did not know he saw the early Beau Brummell play in L.A. in 1964. Sal was/is such a great singer and what killer songs too. 🎸
Avatar 4:11pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Sid @Matt Clarke: Yeah, Chris mentioning The Beau Brummels as inspiration was a revelation to me as well...did not realize the timeline on that.

ha!
  4:20pm David in London:

Hillman is a top dude.
Avatar 4:21pm Matt Clarke:

@Joey B: From what I can remember having read, each member was able to pick 2 songs. Michael Clarke picked 2 Neil Young songs. Could be wrong if anyone has insight.

Your usual fine work, Todd, thanks!
Avatar 4:33pm Joe B:

That Naomi story reminds me of the two owners of the St. Louis team in the ABA, when they were denied entry into the NBA. The owners turned down the 3.3 million buyout and instead got 2% of NBA TV revenue, netting them about 400 million
Avatar 4:35pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Joe B: Good comp! I read about that in Terry Pluto's history of the ABA: "Loose Balls".
Avatar 4:35pm TDK60:

Yeah Matt @ 4:18, "Sky" off the reunion album is a strong cut.

That Nets team with Super John, The Doctor, The Whopper(Bily Paultz) , Brian Tayler etc. would have swept the Rick Barry Warriors!!

the version of Louisiana Man I saw was on this great ABC tv show called Music Scene ( 1969 one season) hosted by David Steinberg . 10 years After , The Archies, csn&y and of course Charlie Pride all performed live there's also a comedy element in the show & featured lily Tomlin in the cast
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

Avatar 5:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 5:02pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

I saw Kershaw recently on a Johnny Cash Show rebroadcast. He produced a New Orleans garage 45 in the sixties, though which one escapes me at the moment. I talked to him at the last Ponderosa Stomp...I loved chatting with him though I have no idea what he said!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm JohnEBGood:

Super John was from New Haven Todd! New Providence? Knicks or Celtics ?
  5:05pm Miles:

Well the Archies weren't live they had an animated film but THEN weeks later a gospel choir performed Sugar Sugar live which was amazing
Avatar 5:05pm Ross T.:

I remember Music Scene. I would watch it on the little TV in my parents' bedroom as everyone else was watching whatever on the big one. I remember Sly, Janis, Ten Years After, and all the Sugar Sugar stuff.
  5:06pm Gerry from Miami:

@Creature Boy. No, it wasn't Beach Boy DAVID Marks that produced the first Burritos LP. Any blame for botching the job should be laid at the feet of LARRY Marks.
  5:06pm Miles:

@todd the flip side of Louisiana Man ," Make Me Realize" sounds like gram or th birds or somethin!
Avatar 5:06pm Ross T.:

I remember that Miles! Sugar Sugar was a great track -- really in the pocket.

Avatar 5:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

They don't omit lyrics.
  5:36pm Sid Griffin:

When the Byrds were at Ciro's Sonny Bono showed up with a tape recorder and recorded their set. The Byrds were flattered. A few weeks later Cher but All I Really Want To Do after hearing it in the Byrds set. Ouch! Of course here in England the Byrds version was the hit, not Cher's. Great show tonight, Todd!

@Sid Griffin: Yeah, Chris tells part of that in his book. Cher also infamously saw The Velvet Underground in L.A.. She made the scene! Glad you are digging the show!
Avatar 5:39pm Ross T.:

Cher did not care for he VU as I recall reading!
Avatar 5:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Cher on VUs :

Astute in a way...
Avatar 5:40pm Ross T.:

Revolution Rabbit -- you are not alone with the Groovies.
Avatar 5:40pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Ross T: Yeah, her quote at the time was something like, "They won't replace anything except maybe suicide"!
Avatar 5:40pm K8:

@ Rev Rabbit...yeah, but...jeez, Cher.
Avatar 5:40pm Ross T.:

Maybe that's a good review from Cher!
Avatar 5:41pm K8:

@Ross T: Was Cher really that goth though?
  5:41pm Dan Cashin:

Hi@ Revolution Rabbit- where is that quote from?
Avatar 5:42pm Ross T.:

Avatar 5:44pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

I think the Cher quote may have originated in one of the local teen mags but not positive...maybe KRLA Beat?
  5:44pm Dan Cashin:

@Rev Rabbit- Now, prescient would have been, "This band will be replaced by a band called Suicide"
  5:44pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Ahh, I love, love, love Johnny Rivers “4th St”—this set of Dylan covers is tops
  5:44pm Rick A.:

Johnny Rivers covering Dylan, so cool! When I was a teenager, I was addicted to Rivers' Whiskey A-Go-Go, especially his La Bamba/Twist and Shout medley.
  5:44pm Richard Whig:

Fk. this johnny rivers dylan cover is new to me! quite amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm chresti:
