Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

When I was living in my car (a ways back), and I could afford to splurge ... I used to go to this Mexican restaurant with an all-you-can-eat chips+salsa bar (provided one had already ordered a main dish, of course). And then get my carb fix for the week (salsa is also quite healthy, if freshly made)

I really like Indian dance, though I haven't seen much in the past few years. Especially with musicians on the side of the stage, and the occasional improvised interaction with the dancer
  2:58pm Amirtha Kidambi:

Funny you should say, the bells on my feet in this track are from my classical dance days in Bharatanatyam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Dave Sewelson:

sealy, i see you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm fred:

I prefer Kathak, and maybe Odissi, but I do like Bharatanatyam. Contemporary dance too, Padmini Chettur is one of my favorite choreographers. Alas, she no longer performs here, for lack of demand and appreciation
  3:07pm Amirtha Kidambi:

Bharatanatyam is my native tradition as my family is from Tamil Nadu
Avatar 3:15pm northguineahills:

thanks, jn34282!
Avatar 3:28pm northguineahills:

tamil nadu is my favorite Indian cuisine (impossible to find in FL)
  3:30pm Amirtha Kidambi:

Really? There are South Indian communities around Tampa
  3:31pm Amirtha Kidambi:

I can find out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm coelacanth∅:

would what Brian Eno did, as his usual method i believe, be called working with phonemes?... he made up the lyrics based on the sounds he wanted from the singing.
  3:37pm DavidJ:

I’m digging this show.
  3:42pm DavidJ:

I love June. She was a real sweet person and funny as well. Her “Astro Black” is great, too.
  3:47pm Dean:

From a Fanfare review of a recording by the Fine Arts Quartet: "The Quartet by Ruth Crawford Seeger is a classic: four short, marvelously contrasting, pretty-well-atonal movements from 1931, related somewhat to the Ruggles-Riegger-Becker world but really on its own. The more heterogeneous outer movements frame an imitative scherzo and a “sound-mass“ slow movement, the latter looking forward to some of Penderecki. The last movement, in its highly structured phrasing and palindromic form, also foreshadows developments which took place many years later. All in all it's a wonderful work. Regrettable it is that its composer wrote very little after this Quartet."
  3:53pm Dean:

I have a recording, a 4CD set of live recordings from 1999 by Correspondence Quartet, which featured Jessica Pavone and Jackson Moore. Quite something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Dave Sewelson:

DavidJ and Dean you is real listening listeners
Avatar 3:56pm Honeybear:

very enlightening, this last set
Avatar 3:56pm northguineahills:

@Amirtha: I'm in Orlando. All of the Indian restaurants here do north Indian cuisine, and it's usually about $20/ entree. I'm used to Curry Lane in Manhattan where I could get a meal for $5-$6 for multiple Indian cuisines...
  3:58pm Dean:

The Arditti recorded the Crawford Seeger string quartet way t'heck back in 1990!
Avatar 4:01pm northguineahills:

I have this Ruth Crawford Seeger album....

I'm recharging by listening to GTDS, listening to a podcast on 4th c history of church theology, watching futbol (soccer), and American football, and playing puzzle games (i'm fun at parties and can apparently multi-task).

Happy Saturday, Dave and Amirtha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm fred:

Funny how when times are tough social programs must be cut and the poor must pay, but when they're not the rich must get tax cuts as a reward. Not just in the US, it's the same here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm coelacanth∅:

isn't some people getting wealthier the whole reason this epidemic was created?

I saw some pretty nice Karl Marx “All I Want for Christmas is the Means of Production” sweaters this year.

Motorhead and Aerosmith also have songs called "Eat the Rich," though I suspect neither is overtly ideologically determined. I'm a fan of The Dils' "Class War," personally.

www.socialists.nyc
  4:25pm Amirtha Kidambi:

I'm aware. Regardless, it's a good slogan. There's definitely a little metal influence here, but more Sabbath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm fred:

The left in France is depressing, mostly in thrall to a nativist populist egomaniac. Weird that I get more hopeful vision from Dissent than local orgs. The local anarcho-syndicalists are good people, but they're too busy splintering and fighting each other
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm coelacanth∅:

Dean @424 why would you suspect such a thing?
  4:31pm Dean:

Other than the title and refrain, the lyrics to the Motorhead song don't imply any sort of class dimension. Aerosmith...I mean, Aerosmith?

I'm going to have to explore Carnatic metal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm fred:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm fred:

@Dave: the link for the Eat the Rich track in the playlist isn't right, there's an extra "A" in front that breaks it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Dave Sewelson:

fred, thanks i got it now I think....
  4:50pm Amirtha Kidambi:

I hope Bandcamp keeps it up! It's been great for us musicians.

Avatar 4:56pm northguineahills:

I'm a vegetarian when I have the monetary means to do so (but I will indulge in a dish I've never encountered before once)(I'm homeless).

@fred: at least the Left in France is left, as opposed to what passes for the "left" in the US.

merci beaucoup, Amirtha Kidambi , Dave et mes amis!
