Yeah it is so tough to quit, especially with the increased isolation during Covid. I quit Twitter for good, but Instagram is especially hard. Even though Instagram too is especially pernicious, the constant pressure or wanting to seem like your life is this beautiful perfectly curated, exciting time. But yeah I don't think I could quit everything even though I know exactly how bad it is for many reasons.

@mariano - I'll raise you the fact that I have yet to upgrade to a "smart" phone...the old flip still serves me well. I can call and text, but have no need for social media, snapchat, tik tok, et. al., and just simply avoid all of those trappings that seem to go hand in hand w/newer phones. @mariano - Ha! I don't blame you; I may have to upgrade due simply to the 5G network, which I think is rendering my Star Trek device completely obsolete. Still, as far as the other stuff, it's like smoking - if you don't start, you don't have to quit later.

Sheila, the fact that some listeners don't realize you are playing music by women means that you are playing music at such a high level that people aren't processing it on the level of gender.

I'm still mostly enjoying Instagram – because of the way people can easily discover and follow people they've never met in real life, I've found the other people who enjoy obsessively taking photos of wristwatches, and they've found me.

I can certainly see the downside of that same kind of self-sorting if the field of endeavor were, say, rabid racism and fomenting of hate instead of a being a wristwatch or fancy rat or bunny rabbit fancier.

Dear Sheila,
I am sitting on a screened-in porch in Cape May, NJ, listening to your show while watching the rising, shining almost full moon that is rising. Clouds are slowly drifting over the moon. The air is crisp. I am sipping some Scotch Whiskey (The Dimple Pinch) that my father brought home from Edinburgh, Scotland maybe 25 years ago? Your music is the soundtrack to an eerily dream-like state I am now experiencing.....much gratitude to YOU! xoxleigh

Might be time for you to play for yourself Tyrone Davis' hit "Can I Change My Mind" which recently is being revived at my house. Playing it often. @djsheilab I still think you're making a great decision.
Avatar 5:45pm
Jeff Moore:

@djsheilab: I'm actually unsurprised that listeners can go a long while before realizing that you've been nearly always playing female artists – great music is just great music, and the most obvious fingerprint on your shows is your aesthetic sense rather than the gender of the musicians.

I did note that the last time I did a show playing only female-fronted or women-only bands (not making a Big Announcement about it at the time, because that seemed lame – how many shows have happened to feature only men, there's never an announcement then) – absolutely nobody noticed. They just enjoyed the music.

www.wfmu.org...

There was also a sort of narrative thread running through the show. Nobody noticed that, either. That's fine, too; it helped me as I was stringing things together, and thus served its purpose. What's important is if listeners enjoy the ride. And as always, I'm enjoying the ride of your show today! Thanks for carrying us from the daylight into this disturbingly early evening dark lit from within with song.
