Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Chop Scott:

Alright Joe! I've been looking forward to this all week.
  2:12pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

@JB: you know it. I was at one of those United Palace shows where he played “The Sultan”—in my mind, cows jumped the moon & the dish ran off w the spoon, etc. Neil prob hired a dedicated gong tech guy for that tour.
Avatar 2:13pm Joe B:

hey Scott! thanks for being here!
  2:13pm captain mike:

Hi Joe Preferring Neil’s early stuff to his incessant whiny nasal caterwauling of his later period and this is coming from a fellow Canuckster
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Mike Sin:

I love all your themed shows. Probably learn a lot during this one!
  2:13pm Todd in RVA:

So excited to be hearing this show. Neil is in my top 3 of fav bands (other 2 are The Byrds and Velvets) all time. Thanks Joe!!
Avatar 2:14pm Joe B:

@DK - I caught the Sultan in Boston. Missed it at united palace, where Todd-o-phonic, ira and I somehow had better seats than Individual 1!
  2:14pm John Haley:

Hey cat, one of my older brothers who passed away a few years back, was the ultimate Neil fan and I do mean ultimate. He would have absolutely loved this show. It's bringing back memories of my brother ... in a good way ... so thank you.
Avatar 2:14pm Joe B:

@captain mike - plenty of caterwauling to come! you've been warned!
Avatar 2:15pm Joe B:

hey Mike! thanks, we'll find out!
Avatar 2:16pm Joe B:

hey Todd in RVA, thanks for being here!
  2:16pm Todd in RVA:

Percival!
  2:18pm captain mike:

Yikes Joe! Hopefully he turns up his guitar to drown that racket down. Dig Neil’s sonic explosion jams though.
Avatar 2:18pm Joe B:

hey John! hope it is worthy of his fandom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Candy-O'67:

Hey, Joe and everyone! Just tuning in!
Avatar 2:19pm Joe B:

probably should have played the 1965 version of I wonder instead as it is rarer, but I rank it third of the three versions
Avatar 2:19pm Joe B:

hey candy-o! thanks for being here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm medson:

Great tracks so far Joe.
Avatar 2:21pm Joe B:

I probably should have just played the Miriam version of this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Matt Fiveash:

This song is good. Someone should do a full-band version!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Yes:

hey all, happy to be here
Avatar 2:30pm Joe B:

hey Yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Andrew_in_WI:

Loving the Shakey. Good work Joe
Avatar 2:34pm Joe B:

hey Andrew! thanks Joe M!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Mike Sin:

As the amp shorted out, Neil's lucky he showed up with a hollow-body guitar. There wasn't acoustic anywhere around Elektra to throw Neil?! ;)
Avatar 2:35pm Joe B:

@Mike - the guy basically blew him off! here, record yourself, I gotta go hang with Judy Collins!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Gaylord Fields:

Goddamn manager ratting out Rick James to the US Navy! "It's My Time" had hit written all over it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Mike Sin:

This Mynah Birds track is one of those rare instances in which the hype about "mindblowing tracks in the vault" actually delivered! This track is really something else.
Avatar 2:37pm Joe B:

the what ifs are staggering! the motown machine behind a multi-racial super talented group.
Avatar 2:38pm Joe B:

should also mention these two tracks co-produced by r. dean taylor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Mike Sin:

I would have never expected Rick James to pull out so many "Jaggerisms" on "It's My Time."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Gaylord Fields:

@Mike: Rick James is such a good singer on these Mynah Byrds tracks — I'm a sucker for black guy imitating white guy imitating black guy.
  2:40pm captain mike:

Corner of Hazleton and Yorkville site of the Mynah Bird Club back in the day
Avatar 2:40pm Joe B:

guess that is what they were named after?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Mike Sin:

@Gaylord -- the game of "telephone" with all the influences on so many '60s records is what keeps me fascinated!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Gaylord Fields:

@Mike: Some of my favorite records are bands failing at imitating their role models but accidentally coming up with something greater in the process.
  2:42pm captain mike:

House band perhaps Apparently the Mynah Birds did a pet shop ad for mynah bird store in Toronto newspaper too
  2:45pm Rich Haley:

Hi Joe. Just checking in....Great show focused on a one-of-a-kind artist
  2:46pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

Loving it, Joe!!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Matt Fiveash:

Thanks Joe for getting us away from all this day to day running around for a little while
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm WR:

Hi folks. Greetings all.. Missed the Mynah Byrds tracks, will circle back for them.
Avatar 2:59pm Joe B:

hey WR! thanks for being here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Mike Sin:

The Buffalo Springfield box set was such an eye opener for me. A lot of box sets are filled with demos of half-baked ideas or rough versions of songs that were later reworked into the hit or known tracks later. The Buffalo Springfield box set really illustrated just how these guys hit the ground running with a create full of fully realized and great songs.

The Worthy Flip of For What It's Worth?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm chris_in_space:

Do I have to come right out and say it? This show is great! @Joe B are you thinking of doing any other NY ecades over the coming weeks?
Avatar 3:01pm Joe B:

@Mike - Neil is adding more stuff to his site - in september he posted a couple more demos
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm chris_in_space:

*decades
Avatar 3:01pm Joe B:

all time neil guitar solo here
Avatar 3:03pm Joe B:

@woo - you got it. still puzzling they thought Clancy could be a single.
Avatar 3:04pm Joe B:

thanks Chris! no plans for that as of now but good idea. maybe next year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Matt Clarke:

What a raver! Love Neil's playing on this early Springfield stuff
Avatar 3:07pm Hackensack Slim:

"Leave" was incredible! Embarrassed to say that's the first time I've heard it.
Avatar 3:07pm Joe B:

better late than never!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm chris_in_space:

@Hackensack Slim same here with "Sell Out". So good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm chris_in_space:

@Joe B the reverb on your mic is a nice touch! Very Neil.
Avatar 3:10pm Joe B:

reverb credit goes to the Rock n Soul Bunny!
  3:14pm Miles:

this is the 45 version& literally ON vinyl? it almost sounds different from my 45 copy
  3:15pm Miles:

re Mr soul
Avatar 3:15pm Joe B:

maybe there were two versions?
Avatar 3:16pm Joe B:

what's the b side on your single?
  3:17pm Miles:

I don't remember, maybe I'm trippin
Avatar 3:17pm Terre T:

I missed the first 40min of this show- so glad there's archives. Like everyone else I've been looking forward to hearing this show all week:Neil's 60s/early years material- aMazing!!
Damn yr such a great DJ Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Candy-O'67:

Hey, Terre! Great to see ya! I tuned in to Cherry Blossom! It was so fab this week! I was busy and couldn't comment
Avatar 3:19pm Terre T:

Hiya Candy-O'67- aw thanks !
Avatar 3:20pm Joe B:

thanks TT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Matt Clarke:

Expecting To Fly sessions, Joe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Mike Sin:

I missed Mr. Soul as I was down in my home "cafeteria," but for clarity -- the mono mix that ended up on the second LP and the mono mix on the original ATCO single are different.
Avatar 3:24pm Joe B:

@Matt - yes, exactly
Avatar 3:24pm Joe B:

@Mike Sin thanks
Avatar 3:24pm Terre T:

I love the informational notes- on Buffalo Stomp "Skip Spence on KAZOO"- what really? I knew he was a multi-talented /multi-instrumentalist -so thats what they got him to contribute? :)
Avatar 3:25pm Joe B:

@Mike Sin - also re the Springfield box - not streaming, not even on neil's own site. wonder what is up with that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Matt Clarke:

Is Stills on this?
Avatar 3:27pm Joe B:

@Matt - yes stills is on it. maybe should count as springfield?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Gaylord Fields:

Yeah, Russ!
Avatar 3:28pm DA the DJ:

What a great show Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Matt Fiveash:

Joe- dunno who should be alerted about this, but rock & soul stream isn't working when you use the "pop-up player" option. Tried it on two different devices. The 128k mp3 stream works though.
Avatar 3:29pm Summer Man:

One of the all-time kazoo greats
Avatar 3:30pm Joe B:

@Gaylord - Russ is on one of these other tracks but I don't have the Springfield box handy to look it up. I forget which one.
Avatar 3:30pm DA the DJ:

I'm listening that way Matt.
Avatar 3:30pm Woo:

When the Springfield reunited it was great to see how much joy Richie Furay seemed to be getting out of it.
Avatar 3:30pm Joe B:

@Matt F - I am on popup player also. hmmm. DA?
Avatar 3:31pm Terre T:

@Matt Fiveash I've had exactly theee same problem for a few weeks now!
Avatar 3:31pm Joe B:

@Summer Man! yes!
Avatar 3:31pm Joe B:

thanks DA!
Avatar 3:32pm Joe B:

@Woo - yeah, they sounded great. wish they had played around here and done more than a handful of shows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Matt Clarke:

My pop-up player works on Firefox
Avatar 3:32pm DA the DJ:

Sal Maida seemed like he may have had a similar problem. Terre - how are you listening?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Gaylord Fields:

I also have the same trouble with the popup (Safari on Mac), so I've been using the 128k.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Mike Sin:

The pop-up player works fine for me on Google Chrome, but I have had some probs on other browsers in the past. It was either Firefox or Safari, I think.
Avatar 3:32pm DA the DJ:

Using Chrome on windows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Matt Fiveash:

Maybe it's a Safari thing, that's what I'm using too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Matt Clarke:

Alright! Killer playing on this Davy track
Avatar 3:33pm Terre T:

I can ONLY listen on 128stream but not the pop-ups and it seems this problem is exclusive to RnS stream bc I dont have that problem with WFMU terrestrial stream- hmm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Matt Fiveash:

It's just as well, you haven't heard Skip Spence's kazoo properly until you've heard it in 128k mp3!
  3:34pm Todd in RVA:

Pop up player NOT working on Safari browser. Works on Firefox. I alerted Joe McGrath (sp?) as early as Halloween weekend. it is annoying but there are workarounds. The app has been updated and works well.
Avatar 3:34pm Terre T:

Safari here as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Matt Fiveash:

Yah Terre, all the other streams seem to work in pop-up...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm McGroovey:

Oh, the sun just came out, and the Sun Shining song comes on...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Mike Sin:

Little known fact -- The producer let Neil play on this track because he got him confused with Mike Nesmith as Neil and Mike wore the same fringe jacket at the time and had the same hair color.*

*All this is not tue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Gaylord Fields:

R'n'S and Sheena don't work; Drummer and WFMU do for me.
  3:37pm Todd in RVA:

Agreed Gaylord. Same issues here.
Avatar 3:38pm Hackensack Slim:

Mike Sin, Great Story. Whether it's true or not!
Avatar 3:40pm Terre T:

@Matt Fiveash- ha ha good point!
@Mike Sin- I just choked on my water when I read the last line of yr Mike/Neil story!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm McGroovey:

* Sounds like something I heard somewhere from a reliable source, so in a few weeks when I forget where I heard it, I'll repeat it as truth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Mike Sin that is a great story and I'm going to see if I can get my husband to believe it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Matt Clarke:

@Mike Sin: I always heard it was their massive sideburns
Avatar 3:42pm Joe B:

their trousers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm McGroovey:

Then there's the clip (from the Monkees TV show?) oh Mike Nesmith and Frank Zappa impersonating each other, somewhat credibly.
  3:43pm Dave:

I've listened to a LOT of Neil Young in my life, but even so I feel like I've never heard some of these versions. Am I just not as well versed as I think I am? Or are these really some lesser known sides? Either way -- thanks!

Avatar 3:51pm Joe B:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm WaffleMix:

Same albums really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm RevWaldo:

Now I want to hear the rockabilly version of Wonderin'. So thanks for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm McGroovey:

Neil should do an album of redone songs from the eighties albums everyone hates. There are actually some good songs there. That cheesy eighties sound is the problem on a lot of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Gaylord Fields:

Thanks, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm WaffleMix:

Outtakes are great.
