Really digging today's show, Bryce
Avatar 1:27pm TDK60:

Hello Bryce. Just back from voting. I was lucky, the whole process took only 15 minutes. Others in this city have waited 3, 4, 5 hours.
  1:29pm Naila:

Can I ask what might seem like a daft and naive question from the UK. Why are the queues so massive at the polling stations in the US? Are there not many polling stations or volunteers? Every picture you see on the news looks like it must take hours to cast your vote...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm David (in London):

This is going to be one of those shows where everything gets a clicky star.
Hey TDK.
Avatar 1:33pm TDK60:

Naila, brace yourself. There are different election rules, procedures in these 50 states. Then, there's also voter suppression maneuvers. Like in Texas, I think the governor mandated only one early-voting ballot drop box for each county. And many other tricks like that exist to thwart democracy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Naila: There are a lot of instances where multiple polling places were closed. The claim it was due to cost-cutting measures but yeah...voter suppression. Also, distancing requirements. AND there's been a huge uptick if voter turnout.

Yeah, it does look like a mess from the outside...because it IS.
  1:34pm Naila:

Good grief
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm David (in London):

I'm glad you asked that Naila, because it's always baffled me too.
  1:36pm Naila:

Thanks for the useful explanation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Naila - That's not a daft or naive question. In my personal opinion, I think it really varies city to city and region to region based on population density, time of day and how the area in question votes (in person vs mail in, early voting vs day of, et al). There's also the factors that TDK60 described. I live in a state that is primarily mail in voting. The ballot is mailed to every registered voter who has the option of returning the ballot by mail or ballot drop box. There's also a voting precinct for in person voting on the day of the election.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Ike:

@Naila, depends on the location and whether or not it's run by conservatives who want to suppress the vote (say, Georgia) or just an incompetent patronage-ridden Board of Elections (here in New York). That said, I went near closing time to vote early on Wednesday and there was no line. I was done in 5 minutes. Others have waited hours, even the mayor. It varies wildly.
Avatar 1:38pm TDK60:

Early voting in New York City has been massive. The mayor chided the Board of Elections, ordered more voting machines installed immediately.
  1:39pm Naila:

Wow! Thank you. That’s so interesting and really shocking. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised but even so
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Naila - Mean and stupid jerk people have weaseled themselves in charge of things here and aim to keep it that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Handy Haversack:

It is crucial to remember that the system here works just fine. It is also crucial to remember that the system here exists first and foremost to deny the franchise to Black Americans, then any other person of color, and then the working class and poor as much as can be. The system is almost flawless. It's just a racist, capitalist system of oppression and control. And it works every damn time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Having the states in charge is both good and bad. Having the federal government in charge, in the case of the current administration, would be frightening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Carmichael:

I just voted here in California. Heard we have 47% voter participation at this point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm YETI BOB:

@Handy: Hear, hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Andrew_in_WI:

@TDK it surprises me that they actually had extra voting machines that weren't already in use.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Handy: Yes. And of course we were not taught the real reason or the existence of the electoral college. Just that hooey about small states not being ignored. I'm sure they still teach that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Tome:

RagaYagaDoodle !<>!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Ike:

To expand a bit: Voting varies so much from state to state that, for instance, here in New York, we have something called "fusion voting" where candidates can appear on multiple party ballot lines at the same time, and voting on any line still counts just as much for that candidate. (New Yorkers, vote for Biden on the *Working Families Party* line please!) But that doesn't exist anywhere else in the US. (It was common in the 19th century.) Maine has instituted a GREAT idea, Ranked Choice Voting. People can rank ALL the candidates on their ballot instead of a basic, dumb "first past the post"/plurality-wins system. I love it, we need that EVERYWHERE. (NYC will soon have it, but only for certain city elections.)
Avatar 1:43pm TDK60:

Hello David in Londonham. / Handy, I have to agree. More democracy is what's needed, not just electoral but in the workplace and neighborhoods.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm fred:

It's also important to pledge to WFMU. But vote as well. Don't waste time figuring out which is more important: punt and do both
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Not sure if this link will work outside the U.S. www.pbs.org... Documentary on public TV about voter suppression.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm YETI BOB:

Chicago, being a Democratic stronghold, has made voting pretty easy, early voting started Oct 1 and there are plenty of places to turn in ballots. I think it's harder for the red team to play their dirty tricks here. (Of course the "Democratic Machine" gets accused of its own excesses, but I'll take those)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Handy Haversack:

fred makes an excellent point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm tim from champaign (now washington):

In Washington State, the top 2 vote getters in the primary appear on the general election ballot. There are 2 democrat candidates for vice governor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm David (in London):

Ken, thanks, that link works fine.
  1:46pm diana:

Hello! Damn cats! Better now than at 3am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Ike Yes. And boy, the republican opposition to it has been relentless. Sort of sad.
  1:47pm Naila:

Thanks Ken. It works. I’ll watch that later on.
  1:47pm Pip:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Krys O.:

Here in Jersey, I was able to vote by mail-in ballot that I dropped off in a secure collection box in my neighborhood on September 27th.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Bryce:

oh no!!! thanks, pip!! yeah my entire broadcast setup apparently got dashed in an autoupdate, minutes before Showtime, and i had to cobble together a new setup lickety split.

brb! *cough*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm YETI BOB:

I guess the lines are getting closer as we get closer to Nov 3, I'm now reading some reports of 2-hour waits. I'm glad I voted when I did, I didn't have to wait at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm tim from champaign (now washington):

I'm pretty worried about the governor's race here in Washington. It's seems like current governor Jay Inslee is a shoe-in but in driving around my county for work I see only 1 Inslee sign for every 10 of his opponent's signs. His opponent is this jag off sherrif from a rural small town who wants to lock up drug users and clean the scum off the street in Seattle blah blah blah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm chresti:

I've been dropping off my mail-in ballot at a polling place for years. There's a few places I can drop it off early, this year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@chresti - I heard a report that one of the parties was setting up fake drop-off boxes in California. The party that shouts "voter fraud" at every turn.
Avatar 1:53pm TDK60:

At one line I observed that was taking hours, a poll worker shouted that folks with mail-in ballots didn't have to wait in line, just walk up to a drop-off box by the door, and leave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm coelacanth∅:

Handy @140 everything is going according to plan pretty smoothly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Bryce:

@diana - now, AND at midnight! AND at 5:30 am.

*rocks back and forth*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm chresti:

Oh yeah, Ken FHP, LA county sent a card showing the nearest "real" drop boxes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Krys O.:

Ah, my kitties will knock things off my desk to wake me up or they team up and take turns poking me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm coelacanth∅:

i've been talking about ranked voting since around 1979 -when i first heard of people voting "for the better of 2 evils".
another reasonable option would be a vote "for" and a vote "against".
(like, i'm voting for Bernie but i think he wont win so i'm also voting against ronald mcdonald, so clinton might still win)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm David (in London):

Hi Granny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Ike:

@Yeti Bob@1:44, your anti-machine reforms must be ahead of ours in NY. In addition to the patronage BOE issues I mentioned, the Kings Co. Dem Committee suddenly made up a rule against teleconferencing to get out of having a meeting AT ALL due to Covid-19: gothamist.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm chresti:

Hola TDK60. Me too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm David (in London):

Bryce, my 16-year old son listens to FMU now, and absolutely loves your show. He puts it straight on when he get home from school on Friday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm coelacanth∅:

hey Granny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm YETI BOB:

C∅: I like the idea of ranked-choice too and I've been interested in this idea for a very long time. Our "first-past-the-post" system here enourages 2-party hegemony, makes it impossible for a 3rd party to get off the ground.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Ike:

Plus in Queens the old Dem machine put 90-year-olds on the ballots for district leaders without their knowledge or consent. Plus Cuomo... just everything Cuomo. Plus....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Bryce:

time for a paloma. (it's 5:30 am somewhere....)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm chresti:

That's great, David in London and son.
Avatar 2:08pm TDK60:

Ike, the Demz seems like really two parties, uneasily in the same "party." The center-right is scared of the newer left.
  2:08pm ami ad:

Hello DJ. Hello all. hot stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm YETI BOB:

@Ike: Sure, I could point to plenty of failures of the Democrats in Chicago too. I'm just talking about the current election - the fact that this is a Democrat stronghold makes it (relatively) easy to vote here, compared to what I've been hearing from many other parts of the country. I've just got my sights on getting the Orange Menace out of office, we can worry about the rest after that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm coelacanth∅:

Yeti but, sadly, those 2 parties would like to keep it this way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

greetings, David (in London)! howdy, coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm YETI BOB:

@TDK60: And if we had ranked-choice voting, the center-left would probably split off into a new party.
@C∅: Sadly, that does seem to be the case. How is anything ever going to change when th power structures are so fossilized?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm David (in London):

TDK, it's been very much the same with the Labour Party here for the past four or five years.: centrists versus new left 'Momentum' wing.

Hola ami ad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm YETI BOB:

(i meant new-left not center-left)
Avatar 2:12pm TDK60:

Granny, is voting in S.F./Bay area challenged in any way?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Bryce:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm WFMU listener WADE:

Bryce, I'm loving this. I started listening to a lot of classical raga in March to quiet the nerves. Good Stuff. Thanks.
Avatar 2:15pm TDK60:

Yes, David-London. Looks similar. And from my position over here, it looks like J. Corbyn is a victim of smears or gross exaggerations. Do you think?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Bryce:

wade, same here! same time. it's really been helping me to pull all the pieces back together into *some* kind of pile.

  2:20pm diana:

cats can be such jerks. mine like to dance on my head and body slam me around 3:30am. started closing the door.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm tim from champaign (now washington):

I was in my mid 30s when I first heard the Bryce/Billy Jam transitions. That did a number on me. What little brain cells I had at that time were definitely scrambled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm listener:

this show has been an awesome journey, keep it going dear leader Bryce!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Krys O.:

@diana: No closed doors allowed. My cats will knock until the door is open or scratch the hell out of any carpet near the door as if they were tunneling through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm David (in London):

TDK - Corbyn was definitely the target of smears, but some of the very damaging flak he took was entirely justified. Party politics aside, some of his past actions just wouldn't play well with the electorate no matter their political orientation. I had some interface with him about fifteen years ago when I was working in Islington, where he was an MP. Essentially, he was a very good constituency MP, but probably not the smartest choice as party leader. But that's just my take.
Avatar 2:22pm TDK60:

..or, chresti, make the senior prom a tad more freaky?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Krys O.:

I was a 17 going on 18 yo college student when I first found out about WFMU and started hanging out there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm chresti:

TDK60, I didn't have a senior prom.
Avatar 2:24pm TDK60:

Thanks for that explanation, David. Certainly a complex, layered situation with Corbyn.

C∅: Nice! I'm a member of the Chicago Balinese Gamelan. We haven't been able to get together in a while, of course - I miss it!
  2:28pm Stepchild:

Another POV would be “past actions wouldn’t play well” is the essence of smears. The type of thing we’d reject out of hand as the “they were no schoolboys” trope when we see it deployed against police violence victims. But imo, ofc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Bryce:

diana & krys, i actually shut them IN my room at night. otherwise, they'll knock glasses off my downstairs neighbors' shelves.

fringe benefit: mammal blanket
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Michael 98145:

Oh! I so miss seeing live gamelan orchestras
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm tim from champaign (now washington):

That's so cool, Bryce!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm chresti:

Jr, High had the last school sponsored dance I attended.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Yeti Bob - I saw the Chicago Balinese Gamelan at the MCA in the mid 2000s set up in the sculpture garden.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm coelacanth∅:

Yeti that's awesome! i guess you know Webhamster Henry is also in a gamelan group?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Michael 98145:

( @chresti, love your new avatar :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Michael 98145:

all this music is wonderful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Ken From Hyde Park:

10/30/20, Bryce busts his goal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm tim from champaign (now washington):

THere's a gamelan master musician from Bali who teaches at the school of music at U of Illinois. He'd teach a gamelan orchestra class for music students and community students. There'd be a concert at the end of each semester. I'd go see it every chance I could.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm chresti:

Thanks Michael, my Halloween getup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm chresti:

^And I agree, all this music is wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Them's a lot of kitties!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm YETI BOB:

C∅: That was a different ensemble. The group I play with - CBG - was founded in 2017. @tim: Do you mean Pak Asnawa Tutde? He comes up from Champaign to help and advise us. And we play some of his compositions. He's a wonderful, generous man (although at first I was a bit intimidated by him and his directness - "No! You are playing that wrong!")
  2:35pm WFMU listener j:

Nice music for a crappy day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Bryce:

@ken i wish! so close....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm YETI BOB:

And I think I saw Webhamster Henry at the 24-Hour Drone in Hudson NY.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Krys O.:

Never went to the prom and wasn't asked. Dodged that bullet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Michael 98145:

I used to think i would one day spend an entire night watching a shadow play in Bali ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm YETI BOB:

sorry, I mixed up tim & coelacanth∅ for a sec
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm officina:

Beautiful show Bryce.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm chresti:

Awww...kitty cats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm David (in London):

Stepchild - I was in a town in Essex, at our regional office there, when Corbyn visited for the day. To a man and a woman, the building rose, went to the window and started boo-ing. It wasn't that he 'was no schoolboy' or that he'd been smeared, it was that people had long memories for things he'd said and done. And believe me, it isn't a right wing or Tory town. If he couldn't get people onside there, it wasn't going to happen anywhere. Again, just my take on it though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm coelacanth∅:

haha now i'm confused!
... he's in kingston ny, near me. somebody i know personally is or was in another gamelan group near here, and i don't think it's the same one as Henry.
popular stuff i guess!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Ike:

Point taken @YB@2:08. Mainly I'm angry at Cuomo's Board of Elections (for failing so many others, not so much me) and then I just started ranting, sorry. Lots to be done.
  2:40pm WFMU listener j:

@YETI BOB no one else can compare to this station and the fact the DJs here know their music and are not afraid to take risks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm chresti:

I was going to a continuation school in my "junior" year, no proms, plenty of partys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Krys O.:

Nice mammal blanket!
  2:42pm WFMU listener j:

And i live the fact that we can all talk politics on here if we so choose and hate on each other about it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm David (in London):

That's one big pile of cats in that photo. Is it the angry cat choir's annual jazz meeting, tired after their performance on John Allen's show?
  2:43pm WFMU listener j:

I meant not hate on each other
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm coelacanth∅:

oh i just saw the 24-hour drone comment. yeah that would be him
Avatar 2:45pm Solo:

Ha, son of David In London here. Thanks very much to my wizened old father for the shoutout. The show is perfect for unwinding after the school week, that being said I'm on a break now! Thanks for the music Bryce!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm zopa:

Is it okay if we mildly dislike cats?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Michael 98145:

indeed. the fact remains, this is a very strange country.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@ Yeti - I had to look up the name. It is I Ketut Gede Asnawa

It's the 1%ers' world and we're just playing in it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Krys O.:

In a humorous vein, Tracey Ullman does a great imitation of Jeremy Corbyn: youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Handy Haversack:

Hiya, Solo!

  2:48pm WFMU listener j:

@Krys O spit coffee out that was funny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm YETI BOB:

@tim: Yeah, that's the guy! We call him Pak Tutde Asnawa, "Pak" is an honorific and "Tutde" is a different form of his name.
  2:48pm diana:

Thank you! Great show today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Handy Haversack:

Huge fan of your dad, Solo!

Bryce, I'm jealous. This bunch of cats never catpiles. I can sometimes get one to sit by the dog on me, but the three of them are just not friends. We lost the ones that tied the room together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Yeti - oh very cool. Yeah, I bet he is a task master.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm chresti:

I grew up with 3 cats.

Shoot, Krys is right! Look at the dang time.

Bryce, this was just perfect. Thanks so much.

Be well, all! See some of you at Sheila's, I hope -- I'll get the drinks in.
