Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm spodiodi:

i'm glad it does. i wouldn't have believed if i didn't just see/hear it.... thanks, Julie :D
Avatar 3:20pm Daya:

I had forgotten about this album, and now I remember why ;)
To say nothing of the album title...
  3:21pm Dean:

I think what was going on was Duran Duran and their ilk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Handy Haversack:

Someone else was playing more tracks off that NY album early this year or late last ... Joe B?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Julie:

hiya Dean!
Avatar 3:22pm Daya:

Dean: that and probably some Missing Persons mixed in ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm spodiodi:

aloha, Miles (sorry you missed the last proper one :-B )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm spodiodi:

aloha Dean!
  3:23pm Dean:

Hi, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm spodiodi:

i need my digital fix every hour, at least ... fun song
Avatar 3:26pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

due to my age (80s kid), first song I ever heard from Neil Young was from Trans of all possible ones (transformer Man).
  3:27pm KWilde:

I have to admit my favorite KW song is Kids In America
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Julie:

that whole album is great but I can play that for ya!
  3:30pm KWilde:

Surprise me with one I don't know
  3:30pm KWilde:

Surprise me with one I don't know
Avatar 3:30pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

btw, I made a vague request 2 weeks ago, "play something from blablabla", so, if possible, play any song from Comsat Angels' Sleep No More, pleeeeease. I have no proper stylus for my turntable right now so I can not even listen to it from vinyl.
  3:30pm KWilde:

sorry only meant to say that once
Avatar 3:31pm Daya:

Seconded: Comsat Angels :)
Avatar 3:31pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@3:31 Daya: just knew you would do that, Daya dear!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Handy Haversack:

I *think* that NY album is also the one he said was written so he could communicate with his autistic son? I might be wrong, but this is my memory from another DJ's commentary.
Avatar 3:33pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Neil did some other weird ones, like what that guitar noise album was called?
Avatar 3:33pm Daya:

Hehe :)
I am partial to “Independence Day” and the Aiting For A Miracle “ LP
Avatar 3:33pm Daya:

Waiting*
Avatar 3:35pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@3:33 Handy Haversack: sounds familiar, I guess you are right there.
@3:33 Daya: Fiction is still a very good album, Land really is not except for the Independence Day re-make.
Avatar 3:35pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

speaking of which.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm chris:

any Cars planned, Julie? maybe Panorama?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Julie:

yeah sorry I already had one planned
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Julie:

hey Chris I don't I will get some for ya
Avatar 3:37pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

thanks for this one Julie!
Avatar 3:37pm Daya:

Yes, Friction, and even Chasing Shadows, but they were kind of done by then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Julie:

I had never even heard of this band
Swag For Life Member 3:37pm ike_p:

hi julie! i'd like to request man made by flock of seagulls, since you already played killer in the home on a previous show :)
Avatar 3:38pm Daya:

Independence Day was kind of their big hit, was used in a movie or two...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Handy Haversack:

Suddenly it's a pretty fall day here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Julie:

Sure, Ike!
Swag For Life Member 3:38pm ike_p:

Avatar 3:39pm Daya:

Oh no! Flock of Seagulls! I have ‘history’ with them ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Julie:

yay sparrows
Swag For Life Member 3:41pm ike_p:

daya apologies for any triggers! :)
Avatar 3:43pm Daya:

Oh no, it’s all good! We opened up for them once, and I think that I still have some hair spray in my lungs from the fog in the dressing room! LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm spodiodi:

lol Daya
Swag For Life Member 3:45pm ike_p:

daya, pardon my ignorance as i'm a newbie here, may i ask what band you were in?
Swag For Life Member 3:45pm ike_p:

fwiw i saw them last year, and there was no need for spray...
Avatar 3:45pm Daya:

We were called The Modern Look
Avatar 3:47pm Daya:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm chris:

  3:54pm Martinibomb:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Julie:

I didn't know it was a cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Handy Haversack:

Daya, definitely not a band name optimized for the age of internet searches!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm spodiodi:

The Temptations do the original, Julie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Julie:

ahhhh thanks Spodi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm spodiodi:

had a gf who worked for Motown (i think that's how i first heard it -- from a mix tape) def. check out the Love and Rockets version too (would also work today :)
Avatar 3:59pm Daya:

Handy: our original name was just The Look, but we had to change it, that would have been worse ;)
(I have a cassette tape around here somewhere with a ton of our performances on it, I should try to get it digitized)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm spodiodi:

" "Ball of Confusion"[3] (reached #18 on the Canadian charts in January of 1986)." (LnR's version)
Avatar 4:00pm Daya:

Ball of Confusion (the original) was one of my favorite songs when I was a kid ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm spodiodi:

this is cool. Shaun Cassidy version of Rebel Rebel c1980... wow. cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Julie:

I can't remember the last time I played this album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm woj:

thought of a song for the request hour! ideal's "blauen augen." neue deutsche welle ftw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Julie:

what is this, psychic radio? I'm like one song away from an Ideal song, woj
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm woj:

WOWIE ZOWIE!
Swag For Life Member 4:48pm ike_p:

julie, thank you i feel validated - sir elton can do dark
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Julie:

I love Elton
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Julie:

you can choose another please Woj :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Handy Haversack:

Julie, can I request "Scarred but Smarter" by Drivin' n' Cryin'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Julie:

you got it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Handy Haversack:

Wow. Amazing. That song means A LOT to me.
Avatar 4:56pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Ha, something from Cranes' Self-Non-Self (mini)-LP was actually on my mind for a request. This is way closer to Swans or Einstürzende Neubauten than anything Cranes did later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm woj:

<3 cranes! my kinda 80s...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Julie:

yeah like the CT's their earlier stuff was darker
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm woj:

and beatle robyn. apparently, this is woj corner of today's show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Julie:

yeah this is the "less drum machine" set.
Avatar 5:00pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I had no idea the IDEAL label was called Bi Nuu - well that explains the name of a certain Berlin venue, where I was supposed to see Deutsch-Amerikansiche Freundschaft around 2012, but thanks to my vampirish day rhythm, did not wake up on time to fetch the reserved tickets, oh my. Too late now, RIP Gabi Delgado.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Good afternoon, Julie ... and all Dark Nighters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Julie:

hiya S&M&S
Avatar 5:01pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

label, I meant the Ideal LP title @5:00
Avatar 5:05pm Daya:

WooHoo, another fav: DCD! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah! Haven't listened to DCD in a *while*.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm anne:

Yay! Hi Julie!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Julie:

hiya Anne!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello, darkness and my friends. I have come to listen here again.
Avatar 5:10pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

As is the case with that Cranes one, I also have not heard this (or any other from them ) All About Eve song or that first Dead Can Dance album since late 90s....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Julie:

hiya Ken!
Avatar 5:14pm Daya:

Ok, as for a request, how about "Travels In Nihilon" by XTC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm spodiodi:

hi KenFHP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm woj:

the dawn of madonna
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Julie:

I'll see if I can find!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm chris:

wow, i don't think i've ever heard this Madonna... thanks for the schoolin', ms. DJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm spodiodi:

me either, chris. thanks again, Julie :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Julie:

Daya can you choose another..that's 7 minutes :/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Julie:

i have the english settlement album
Avatar 5:16pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

well, I didn’t know that Madonna song
Avatar 5:17pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Never heard this either but I guess nothing's surprising about her pre-Madonna life, after hearing she was in the audience of a Whitehouse gig?! (Mudd Club's last night)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, that was new to me!

"Borderline": One of my karaoke standards. I ... put my own spin on it. I once terrified a whole passel of passersby in Bay Ridge with it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Ken From Hyde Park:

How-di, spodi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm woj:

if there isn't any danielle dax scheduled before 6pm, how about fizzing human-bomb for the request hour?
Avatar 5:21pm Daya:

Sorry, didn’t realize it was that long.
Maybe "Nobody Takes Me Seriously" by Split Enz
Avatar 5:21pm Daya:

Sorry, I have weird, eclectic strange 80s tastes ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Handy Haversack:

Daya, what's your favorite XTC album? This is a conversation Kate and I seem to have all the damn time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm woj:

hapster!
Avatar 5:23pm Daya:

Probably Drums and Wires Handy
Avatar 5:24pm Daya:

Just way too many good tracks on that album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Handy Haversack:

Solid. Kate's general choice, too. Skylarking gets me pretty good!
Avatar 5:25pm Daya:

Skylarking is definitely the peak of their ‘later’ period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

English Settlement is our fav XTC, too, I think. "All of a Sudden", perhaps fav track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Handy Haversack:

Klaus!
Avatar 5:27pm Daya:

I am always waking around saying/singing “When You’re Near Me I Have Difficulty” ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm spodiodi:

Skylarking for me too, Handy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Are 80's requests still be accepted, Julie? If so, is "So Central Rain" too mainstream an ask?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Julie:

Afraid I'm all filled up, SMS!
Swag For Life Member 5:29pm ike_p:

So this strikes me as a successor to Peter sellers' cover of she loves you
Avatar 5:29pm Daya:

“Skylarking” is ‘notorious’ for there being a huge rift between Andy Partridge and Todd Rundgren over the production. (And for the original cover photo ;) )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

No sweat, Julie! Great show, as ever!
Avatar 5:31pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Oranges & Lemons is not too bad either, the a-side has got an ep's worth of hits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

@Daya that creative tension resulted in a remarkable album. Somehow, I think The Big Express is my favorite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

@Photocopy - there are so many great songs on Oranges, but the production and general sonics leave me wanting them to be something else.
Avatar 5:33pm Daya:

Honestly, it’s difficult to choose a ‘bad’ XTC song/album. IMO, they came closer than anyone to replicating the growth and output of The Beatles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Been listening and enjoying. Veery nice show, Julie. I'm extremely happy that you're in this Tuesday slot now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Julie:

thanks Kevin! I think a few people did not follow me but the ones that did seem to like me!
Avatar 5:35pm Daya:

I like you just fine! :D
(Of course, we were friends first, thanks to Hedwig ;) )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Handy Haversack:

It's been great, too, to get to know Continental Subway, which moved into your Thursday slot, Julie. I hadn't known that show before, and I love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Julie:

it's even harder to get friends to listen!
Avatar 5:36pm Daya:

Yay! I was hoping for/expecting some Rindy Ross!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Ditto heah! And now I can listen to you and Pseu live. Win Win!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Julie:

yes David does a great show!
Avatar 5:37pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

OK, maybe XTC sounds a wee bit too clean sometimes production-wise - no such problem with their "musical cousins" Cleaners From Venus. AAAARRRGGGGHHH. I should have requested Cleaners From Venus.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Handy Haversack:

I found Cleaners from Venus only a few years ago, on Wake and Bake -- what a great band!
Avatar 5:39pm Daya:

To say nothing of “Dukes of Stratosphere” ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

There are days when I think the Dukes is XTC at their best
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Julie:

I like dukes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Handy Haversack:

Just found out Kate's never heard Dukes, so we have some fun exploring to do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Julie:

that's the only one I have, I don't even have XTC albums
Avatar 5:41pm Daya:

WoooHooo! Yes, she’ll love ‘em!
Avatar 5:42pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I am not sure if I have heard Dukes either... then again there might be an XTC album or two I have never heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Handy Haversack:

That Nikki picture is fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm spodiodi:

Rubella Ballet is good for me :) new too. ty, Julie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Julie:

yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Handy, has Kate managed to play amidst all this "Toil & Trouble"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm woj:

who the heck are the cyclones?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Handy Haversack:

Kevin, no, and it's really rough on her. The band has practiced (their practice space is pretty big, and they all wear masks) and recorded (Kate alone in the room for vocals). But not playing out has her really frustrated. She's scheming for the spring, I think, to figure out places to play outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Julie:

some NYC band with like 2 singles. they have a soundcloud
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Julie:

EFD plays one of their songs in his NYU flashback show, and I loved it so I had to seek them out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm woj:

huh, liked that! (efd probably knows the cyclones personally)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm woj:

ok, that's funny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Julie:

I doubt it he was surprised when I showed him the soundcloud
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Handy Haversack:

I caught that, too, Julie! What a great show it was (again).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Yup Handy, Outdoors is the near-term reality.
Avatar 5:52pm Daya:

Wow, that’s a band I had forgotten about, but definitely listened to, Suburban Lawns
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Julie:

I haven't heard it yet but I was listening to the older ones not long ago. But he does seem to stick with one song from the bands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Handy Haversack:

She did some scheming when we were upstate. I think also buying a generator and some rope and setting up in parks is totally legit. Plug in and play. I'll run interference with cops if any try to, you know, destroy people's ability to enjoy life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm spodiodi:

fascists! *shakes fist*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm KevinfromBayRidge:

I know a band or two that have done parking lots, Handy.
Avatar 5:55pm βrian:

I invited a racy Croatian into my glass. Goes well with this tour of the 80s.
Avatar 5:56pm Daya:

Handy, my cousin books bands in CT (College Street Music Hall, Cafe Nine, The Warner, etc.) and they (Manic Productions) are currently hosting a lot of shows on a farm in Morris, CT. Contact me offline, and I can get you hooked up, if you’re interested.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Thank you, young lady for a wunnerful show. I'll be signing off shortly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Julie:

thanks for listening Kevin!
Swag For Life Member 6:01pm ike_p:

Groovy-love that thumpy drum
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm woj:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm woj:

Avatar 6:04pm Daya:

woj: my cousin is Ben, they are partners. (actually Ben is my cousins son, but that still makes us cousins. I’m in Rocky Hill, was in Madison for 15 years)
Avatar 6:05pm Daya:

Ben is the ‘quiet’ one ;) Tall, bearded, glasses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm woj:

ahhhh yep know him too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm spodiodi:

last time i heard this was in the pool room of my favorite bar (sometime over 24 years ago :O :D ) the video was actually playing on the tv too, and i was ecited to be hearing it there and then as well :) ) )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm woj:

gotta watch out for the quiet ones... ;-)
Avatar 6:06pm Daya:

I gave Ben all of my old NH Palace tickets, for their office at College Street ;)
Avatar 6:06pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm spodiodi:

big smiles over here today, Julie * * * * * 5 stars :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Julie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Phillippe Bastille:

Damn, I hate when I get pulled away. Fist shaking at fascists! I miss all the good stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Handy Haversack:

Daya, that is FANTASTIC! I will contact you through the FMU system!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm woj:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm chris:

Avatar 6:10pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@chris :D
Avatar 6:10pm Daya:

Yes, saw SO many shows at the Palace, and the old Coliseum, Toad’s (we played there once), so many good shows!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Julie:

when she said Frankie I expected something dancey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Handy Haversack:

I was briefly distracted as Kate came home and I made her a cocktail (a Contessa). Now we are both ensconced. Though I guess I gotta go get a lighter now ... I thought Frankie said RELAX!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm spodiodi:

i don't even know where one is, chris!
Avatar 6:11pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

you didn’t know that song Julie?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Julie:

nope only know Relax and two tribes I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm spodiodi:

Frankie sez alotta stuff, Handy
Avatar 6:12pm Daya:

Cool Handy! Whatever I can do to help :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm chris:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm spodiodi:

RELAX is wise as ever
Avatar 6:12pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Did anyone else have the laser etched version of this lp?
Avatar 6:14pm Daya:

Yep, I had the laser etched one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm chris:

i wish, Hopey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Phillippe Bastille:

Oh yeah! Fun fact: nearby we have a road called Edwin Raynor Blvd. I think of the Split Enz every time I pass it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm spodiodi:

thanks, chris... i'll give it right back. promise :"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm spodiodi:

i have one friend who has always been notorious for stealing lighters. he's good! really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm spodiodi:

"where'd my lighter go!??!" ... "ask jim"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm chris:

i have two sons who are notorious for stealing lighters. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Handy Haversack:

I used to be that way. I still have the last lighter I bought before I quit smoking! (Four years, six months, nine days ago.) I keep it in my paddling kit. Still works fine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm spodiodi:

he doesn't even pretend feeling bad when he's caught red-handed. amused and proud. *shakes fist at chris' sons* (just lookin out, chris. i'm sure theyre good sons otherwise ;) besides, no one seems to car about my shaking impotent fist(s) )

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Handy Haversack:

Twenty-five for me, spod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm woj:

that isolation ward request was quality. never heard of them before either!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Julie:

I feel like my asthma came from my smoking mother. Of 5 kids, I had to be the sickly one. booo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Julie:

yeah that was from someone who sent me like a dozen. I have played them before though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm spodiodi:

Avatar 6:28pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:25 spodiodi: but you stopped didn't you? I stopped when 16, started again at 20 and finally kicked the habit 17 years ago. If I only could go back and not light even the first one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm spodiodi:

Axel F woooooo yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm spodiodi:

i can still play (some) of this on keys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Handy Haversack:

You've never heard of the banana in the tail pipe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm spodiodi:

i stopped at ag3 34, ChaCHa -- after a few lame attempts and relapses
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm spodiodi:

i've not thought about smoking so much as since when the plague hit though (nor drinking) -- having both seems really appealing at times, these days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm chris:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, I've had more cravings lately than in a year, spod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm spodiodi:

yeah, PiL (thanks again, Julie!) it was hard trying to pick a track off Happy? (i love them all), so i just left it to you. fine choice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Handy Haversack:

Several years ago, Kate's band was playing a gig at Trash in Brooklyn. The other band fell through, so the booker asked a friend if he could do a set to fill the slot. That friend was Kevn Kinney of DnC. I grew up in Atlanta. I saw DnC probably six times? in high school. I had met them. I woke up extra early to get tix to their shows (terrified at the size of the crowd also there and confused by how lame they were, until the Turtles dude, who knew me, told me they were all there for New Kids tix and to go home, he'd print out the first to DnC tix for me before doing any New Kids tix). We went to get our tapes and T-shirts signed when their one crossover album came out. We were *into* this band. For me, DnC and New Model Army were huge influences on me -- aesthetically but also morally, I think, which is politically, in terms of empathy and disdain for icons and other stuff. And they were southern without being horrid and also just rocked. And then I got a whole evening where Kevn Kinney basically said, "Wow, it's great to meet someone who's been a fan for so long. What do you want to hear?" And at the end of the set I got to tell him what his music had meant to me and how grateful I was and how I thought that it had helped me be a better person than I might have, which is pretty good for art. And his wife approached me later and told me how much that talk had meant to him. And it's still one of the best memories of my life.

tl;dr: Thanks, Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm chris:

fucking excellent, Handy. thanks for sharing that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm spodiodi:

that is great, Handy. really nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm woj:

read that all handy. music is awesome. and kevn rules!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Handy Haversack:

They still play. Wow, I loved hearing that. Julie, I got tears here. So happy to get to share it with you fine, fine people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm chris:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Julie:

on the right with the bangs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Julie:

I follow Paulina on instagram and she rhapsodises about Ric sometimes. like they were divorced but obviously real deep love there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Julie:

wait is Ben the one who sings Drive? the kinda blonde guy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Handy Haversack:

Her brother went to college with me, and I came *this* close to meeting Ric and Paulina. We at least got to yell, "Hey, what's up with Bad Brains lately?!" as we drove away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Brian C.:

Man I used to love Stone Roses
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Julie:

I missed these guys somehow. I know Meghan loves them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm chris:

oh man, this album spoke to me so hard. i think i picked it up in 89?
and, yeah, i think you're right re: Ben and Drive, Julie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Yes, Ben Orr sang Drive
Avatar 6:43pm Daya:

Yes, Ben sang Drive
Avatar 6:43pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:42 chris: At least 1989 they were HUGE.

I missed them at the time, and unsurprisingly for me, got into them 10 years later.
Avatar 6:44pm Daya:

Ben has the pink shirt on, with the glasses ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Julie:

I like the one with the bangs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Julie:

not the one that looks like a gallagher the other one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm chris:

lol, Julie. yeah, he and Ben win the chin game. even i can see that.
Avatar 6:46pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:45 Julie: "a gallagher" as in Oasis-ish looking heheh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Julie:

yes, Cha Cha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Julie:

this one came from Mr Nobody I've never heard these guys before
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

I believe the one you like is the drummer.
Avatar 6:47pm Daya:

I have to find my pics of them, I shot a concert of theirs in the 80s some time. I think Squeeze opened, or Paul Carrick solo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Handy Haversack:

Ohhhhh, what a great choice! This whole album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

  6:50pm Mr. Nobody:

Woohoo. My suggestion made it.
Avatar 6:50pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Handy Haversack:

My first concert was R.E.M. on the Green tour.

Yes, early R.E.M. has a better “mood”, imo ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

My last REM concert was the Green tour.
