Avatar 2:37pm Joe B:

Joe Meek betritt das Spiel!
Avatar 2:38pm Woo:

The German version lacks the punch of the English version but still...
  2:38pm SledDawg:

Whoah! This is Have I The Right is track amazing... a completely different track - shorter and not as aggro!
Avatar 2:39pm Joe B:

hey Sleddawg!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Candy-O'67:

Hey, Woo!
Avatar 2:39pm Joe B:

I should have grouped some of them by new tracks vs. new vocal over the original track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Andrew_in_WI:

The Americans... singing en espanol. I approve of this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Candy-O'67:

That was cool, Andrew. I love that song either way!
  2:43pm ike_p:

oh this is hitting me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Gaylord Fields:

@Andrew_in_WI: After all, they're not called "Jay and the United Statesians"!
Avatar 2:48pm Joe B:

speaking of new backing tracks ...
  2:48pm John Haley:

Hey cat, hardcore show ... once again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Andrew_in_WI:

@Gaylord Mexico is actually the United States of Mexico.
Avatar 2:50pm Joe B:

hey John! thanks, maybe we can get Ralph Nielsen to do Scream in Italian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Andrew_in_WI:

Wow. Loving the strings on this Stones track
  2:50pm Rich Haley:

Can't speak French (for the 'Mooners fans)
  2:51pm SledDawg:

wow - wonder how the foreign buyers reacted to these records? not getting the "real" version would sort of pi** me off I think... esp. if it didn't rock as hard. Also, how were they counted in terms of sales? Different catalog numbers?
Avatar 2:51pm Joe B:

ha! hey rich!
  2:52pm John Haley:

I can go over to his house and ask him...
Avatar 2:52pm Hackensack Slim:

I thought this was Lou Monte for a sec. I guess he wouldn't qualify for todays' show.
Avatar 2:52pm Joe B:

all good questions sled dawg! i think on some occasions, they might have gone to radio only. but pretty sure someone like petula clark, the french versions were the only ones released there etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Andrew_in_WI:

Yeah, when "As Tears Goes By," charted in Italy, which version actually charted?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Gaylord Fields:

I can't adequately express my disappointment that no one has yet to remake the Zager & Evans song as "In the Year 2020"! Hardly any effort is needed, as that song pretty much writes itself (sadly).
  2:57pm Mike From Brooklyn:

@Gaylord - you are quite right.
Avatar 2:58pm Joe B:

Gaylord sounds like a job for Nutley Sam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Gaylord Fields:

@Mike @Joe: Yeah, it's right up his alley! On the other hand, we'd then have a remake of "In the Year 2525"!
Avatar 3:00pm Woo:

I would like to hear Hanky Panky in Italian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Andrew_in_WI:

Ahem, that is SIR George Martin
  3:06pm ike_p:

universal translators offline
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Gaylord Fields:

Stevie gives up halfway — I respect that somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Candy-O'67:

Haha, that was funny, Gaylord! Bless him!
Avatar 3:07pm Joe B:

but he presses on with the same enthusiasm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Candy-O'67:

He sure does, Joe!
Avatar 3:08pm Joe B:

he even went back for a few random lines in italian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Gaylord Fields:

"I'm supposed to read this in Italian AND Braille — yeah no"
Avatar 3:09pm Joe B:

ha! hard to believe he only left the label THIS YEAR after that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Candy-O'67:

Exactly, Gaylord!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Gaylord Fields:

@Joe B: Staying on the same label made it easier for him to drive to the label HQ.
Avatar 3:11pm Joe B:

ha!
  3:11pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

Hellooooo Joe!
Avatar 3:11pm Joe B:

hey Cheryl!
Avatar 3:11pm Hackensack Slim:

@ Gaylord Did Stevie drive ala Ray Charles?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Gaylord Fields:

@Hackensack Slim: On rare occasions, evidently, and probably as well as Ray.
Avatar 3:14pm Dominick:

No Italian translation of the string arrangement?
Jimmy's Italian sounds vaguely Japanese.
Avatar 3:15pm Woo:

Is the rhyming just destroyed in the foreign language versions?
Avatar 3:16pm Joe B:

temps also did it in german, but i haven't heard that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Mike Sin:

"In the Year 2525" sounds a heck of a lot better in Italian! Probably in Spanish in and French as well... ;)
Avatar 3:18pm Joe B:

hey Dominick! ha yes. and some of the spanish and itialian here could be reversed! or very similar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Gaylord Fields:

@Woo: The songs are often rewritten heavily rather than literally translated — sometimes to a degree where they're about an entire different topic. And some languages (Italian, Spanish) are much, much easier to rhyme in!
Avatar 3:19pm Joe B:

hence 1-2-3 Red Light
Avatar 3:19pm Joe B:

hey Mike! ha yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Andrew_in_WI:

Will any of these be in more "obscure" languages? Czech, Hungarian, Swahili?
Avatar 3:21pm Woo:

@Gaylord, thanks for that info. I had no idea. I also had no idea this many songs were done in Italian. Between foreign versions and recording Coca-Cola commercials, these bands never got a rest.
Avatar 3:22pm Joe B:

I wish Andrew. Only one other language will be represented besides the big 3
Avatar 3:24pm Joe B:

the velvelettes actually spoke french, like Lesley Gore and Petula, hence the better final results!
  3:24pm Mike From Brooklyn:

I'm guessing these bands already had a presence in Europe so it made more sense to try to increase the presence there via a local language version, than to try to break into a new market.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Gaylord Fields:

@Andrew_in_WI: Haha! No sales market (or possibilities, as in communist Hungary and Czechoslovakia) in many of those countries, and countries that speak Swahili also speak either English or French.
  3:26pm SledDawg:

So, do you have the English versions of "Sukiaki" or Dominique"? LOL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Andrew_in_WI:

@Gaylord Good point about the Iron Curtain!
  3:28pm Mike From Brooklyn:

@SledDawg - LOL. On that point, I understand that the song Sukiaki has nothing to do with food, so they'd probably have to give an English version a different title.
  3:30pm Mike From Brooklyn:

Wanda Jackson's twang sounds great in German!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Andrew_in_WI:

Love me some Wanda Jackson!
Avatar 3:33pm Joe B:

@Mike - agreed. she has a few others in german also
Avatar 3:33pm Woo:

A little difficulty getting those words to fit in Ring of Fuego
  3:33pm SledDawg:

this just sounds weird!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Artie:

Hola, Jose B.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Gaylord Fields:

@Mike From Brooklyn: "Ue o muite arukou" was initially covered by a British band as an instrumental, and that band renamed it "Sukiyaki" as a familiar word to English speakers — the name stuck in non-Japanese markets even when the Japanese version was released outside Japan.
Avatar 3:35pm Joe B:

@Mike re markets - yes and no. with a lot of the British artists, the requests came from the record label affiliates in the other countries where the artist was established, or taking off. Motown was the opposite - they were looking to break in, and used this as one of several strategies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Andrew_in_WI:

@Joe B any chance she did a Funnel of Love?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Matt Clarke:

Hey Joey B!
Avatar 3:36pm Joe B:

andrew not that I am aware of but it could be out there!
Avatar 3:36pm Dominick:

Lorne showin' how it's done
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Gaylord Fields:

@Andrew_in_WI: I would guess it's unlikely, as "Funnel" was the throwaway B-side of the country hit "Right or Wrong" and only gained much-deserved prominence long after its release.
Avatar 3:37pm Joe B:

the beatles for example - that was requested specifically by Odeon, the emi german label. i always assumed they did it since they had roots there but not the case.
  3:37pm Mike From Brooklyn:

@Joe - Ah ... very interesting.
@Gaylord - Thanks, I'll have to look for Ue o muite arukou.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Gaylord Fields:

Can anyone tell if Lorne has a Quebecois accent?
Avatar 3:37pm Joe B:

hey Artie!
Avatar 3:38pm Joe B:

hey Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Mike Sin:

I'm guessing if the regional affiliates asked for these versions, it was a rather inexpensive affair if the original multi-tracks were at the ready and the artist had some knowledge of the language. If not, the longest part of the process was having someone write out the entire song phonetically!
Avatar 3:46pm JR HTX:

I dich this!
Avatar 3:46pm Joe B:

thanks Candy-O, William in North Carolina and Chris in Fair Lawn NJ, hometown of Menster Phip! for pledging in support of Shakin' Street! thank you so much!
Avatar 3:47pm JR HTX:

Liebth?
Avatar 3:47pm Joe B:

MACH SCHAU!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Mike Sin:

BeatlesGeek question: Joe -- did you play "Sie Liebt Dich" from the "Rarities" LP. It sounded like that weird stereo mix!
  3:49pm SledDawg:

Sie Liebt Dich is an entirely new track, but Komm Gib sounds like the original instrumental track remixed with new vocal overdub? You can hear the two lead guitar tracks clearly...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Matt Clarke:

Oh nice. Love this Cowsills. Cool they did a foreign language record
Avatar 3:50pm Joe B:

Mike it is from the past masters on the 2009 stereo box. Only because i couldn't find my Something New stereo LP!
Avatar 3:51pm Joe B:

I played the version with bernard purdie on drums!
Avatar 3:52pm Joe B:

both german beatle tracks are new vocals only. wacky stereo mix maybe why it is sounding different
Avatar 3:53pm Joe B:

they actually edited in the original yeah yeah yeahs. too bad. would have been great to have Ja Ja Ja!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Matt Clarke:

Cheers Joe!
  3:55pm SledDawg:

Great show! Thanks so much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Andrew_in_WI:

Awesome show Joe B!
Avatar 3:56pm Joe B:

I guess they couldn't translate the handclaps
Avatar 3:57pm Joe B:

thanks everyone! appreciate it! please make a pledge at the top of the playlist page if you can swing it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Matt Clarke:

Great show, Joey B!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Gaylord Fields:

Double-jeu des Hollies toutes les semaines!
Avatar 3:58pm Joe B:

thanks Matt!
  3:58pm Mike From Brooklyn:

Very cool show Joe!
Avatar 3:58pm Joe B:

theme October rolls on next week with Declaration of Dependence: The British Invasion in the 1960s inspired some American bands to rise up and fight their own rock-n-roll revolution. Others turned out to be descendants of Loyalist colonists. Tune in for two hours of British wanna-be band names, terrible fake accents, stolen riffs, valley forgeries and oddities not quite up to snuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm efd:

"valley forgeries"! Nice one, Joe. (also, hi!)
  3:59pm ike_p:

great show - tyvm!
  4:00pm Rich Haley:

Wish I knew how to spell hardcore in another language because that's what this show was
