Tusk Festival: Senyawa: Unbounded Sounds From Indonesia

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop‑up player!

Senyawa is a Javanese duo that smashes boundaries of traditional and experimental music. Using home-made instruments constructed from traditional materials like bamboo, they sing, intone and scream in various Indonesian languages. Pitchfork calls their latest album, Sujud (Sublime Frequencies), "an earthy fusion of doom and folk metal." Hear Senyawa as part of WFMU's collaboration with the adventurous Tusk festival - usually in Newcastle UK but this year online and on WFMU.

Above: Senyawa's performance at the 2016 Tusk Festival. You can also see their interview with Derek Walmsley of The Wire filmed just prior to that 2016 festival performance, here. On tonight's show, at 8 pm Garden State time, we'll hear a new performance by Senyawa created for the 2020 Tusk Festival.

Here's more on Senyawa (from https://tuskfestival.com/artists/senyawa/):

The Indonesian duo of Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryada’s recent collaboration with Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))) has perhaps long seemed inevitable – the two bands have always felt linked by some ancient and ethereal aesthetic bond, though with sounds that seem to suggest very different social contexts and historical times. Vast low-end rumble seemingly drawn from the very core of the earth, sublime throat singing and vocalisations colluding to form other-worldly long-form music constructs that inhabit their own reverberant universe. Senyawa appeared at TUSK 2016 and left everyone slack-jawed. Since then they’ve added new constructions to their armoury of self-built instruments and we’re delighted to welcome them back to TUSK.
