A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Trouble:

good morning thursday people!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am YETI BOB:

Another Troubled Thursday! All right, let's do this! Hi everyone.
  9:02am brassaï:

Hello Trouble!
Looking forward to your show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

There's a lot of trouble in the world but ah, Louise Gluck...at least ONE great thing comes out of 2020.

3 LP set of "Private Issue New Age Music in America"? I might just have space on the record shelf for this ... How's the rest of this set?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am word:

Numero Group put out a Guitar Grimoire reissue. Perfect for this month.

Earth Walker! *You're* the original! Praising you with great praise!

It was a great day of radio and community. WFMU is a gift, and I really felt it yesterday. I didn't leave the apartment and was never even close to being alone. Thanks, friend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am YETI BOB:

@TDK60: I don't care much for Bloomberg either, but the man made his billions in presenting information clearly & quickly. (And he's a billionaire who hates Trump, so that's something)

I ordered this Bhajan Bhoy LP after hearing it on WFMU - it showed up in the mail with a few extra goodies and a lovely handwritten note from Ajay Saggar. Really made my day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Deborah:

Good Morning All!
Listening until the moment of transformation to "professor" shows up. Ten weeks left in this semester of hell, except for my Journalism class. Then we talk about communication and yes, WFMU, among other radio stations including the obligatory NPR and the still struggling Pacifica Foundation. Not all that bad company.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am YETI BOB:

I think I heard it on Michele's show. She played the track "Pinecone" (not on this LP) where he improvises along with bird songs.

Brain all the restaurants were wiped away on the beach here in Nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Passaic River Blues: I went to a talk one time with Eric Jackson, who had had a nightly jazz show on Boson's WGBH. He said the first time he played "Astral Traveling" the studio phone rung off the hook with people asking "What IS that?!!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Handy Haversack:

NYers, I just had a paranoid thought that I figured one of you must be able to answer: if we go vote in person on election day, it's like normal, right? One doesn't need to bring a ballot along or anything?
Avatar 9:44am Strandlund:

This is such a beautiful set, Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Trouble and fly fans.

@Handy: You should take advantage of early voting. In NY, it starts October 24, and runs until November 1
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am thedunkel:

good morning Trouble! good morning all!
Avatar 9:47am βrian:

Flooding pics:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am YETI BOB:

@Handy: For early voting, or voting on regular election day, you don't need to bring anything, but having your legal ID is a good idea. Polling places are less crowded during early voting. My wife and I did it this week.
Avatar 9:47am TDK60:

Handy, I recall you just show up. They have your name and address. Bring an ID in case you're challenged. (I think this is correct.)
Avatar 9:47am Roberto:

Oh gawd, Ronnie. One small consolation these days is knowing that the majority does not support The Orange Doofus and he had to cheat to win. In Ronnie's day, his support was demoralizingly overwhelming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Is Trouble talking and we can't hear her??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am YETI BOB:

"If you've voted in New York before, you don't need to provide ID to vote.
If you're a first-time voter who registered by mail, and didn't provide a copy of your ID with your registration, you may need to show ID to vote." But just bring your ID anyway.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Irene Trudel:

Thant's correct Handy. BTW, A Late Show with Stephen Colbert has a great website detailing how to vote in each state: www.betterknowaballot.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am MikeG:

Oh there she is
Avatar 9:50am TDK60:

Also, don't be intimidated by any flag-waving "boys" out there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Irene Trudel:

Ah, the Phantom Power button! It provides power to your mic. I've turned mine off by accident as well. Glad you figured it out. You can always call me if you have problems (I'm a pretty good engineer too).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am YETI BOB:

Yeah, he was born Farell, Son Ra changed it to Pharoah
  9:53am Lucky:

Lol! Get in line, @Irene Trudel! But seriously, that's very sweet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Webhamster Henry:

@TDK60 probably piano strumming because nobody likes to tune autoharps. but it _could have been_ an autoharp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am YETI BOB:

Sun Ra of course, sorry
Avatar 9:54am TDK60:

Henry, to me it sounds more like a piano, strummed.
  9:57am Pamela:

Piano is listed on the personnel list (and it's Lonnie Liston Smith!)
Avatar 9:57am Wallis...:

Pharoah scratchin me where I itch this lovely morning
Avatar 9:57am PKNY:

"Wisdom Through Music". COT DAMN RIGHT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Trouble:

thank you@irene! i will put your number in my phone, my first thought in an emergency is to call andy, but you will be second. you are an excellent engineer!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am YETI BOB:

I was lucky enough to see Pharoah perform with Rob Mazurek's "Chicago Underground Orchestra", truly one of those once in a lifetime things. At the Promontory in Hyde Park (near south side). One day we'll have live music again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am coelacanth∅:

i'm glad the playlist is already long enough to scroll beyond that hideous face. if it weren't i'd have to avert my gaze.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am YETI BOB:

Actually there have been a few venues hosting limited-attendance live shows, I just haven't made the leap yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am coelacanth∅:

Happy Birthday Pharoah Sanders!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Adrian in London:

This Nara track is lovely. I'll check out the full album after the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Irene Trudel:

Happy to help any time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am YETI BOB:

Early voting is a good way to avoid crowds on Election Day, and also any possible screw ups with vote-by-mail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Handy Haversack:

Thanks, all. Just making sure there aren't any new rules with all the crazy going on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Irene Trudel:

Last time I saw Pharoah Sanders might've been a few summers ago in Prospect Park. He basically play his "greatest hits" but it was still transcendent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am YETI BOB:

@Irene: The show with the Underground was all original/improvised.

Handy: early voting ny NYC: www.vote.nyc...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Passaic River Blues:

I'm dropping off my ballot at the Essex County Hall of Records on Newark's MLK Blvd. this afternoon! I'll have YG's "Fuck Donald Trump" playing in my head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am melinda:

@Yeti B that's my plan, vote early with filtered mask. Mail-in voting is an essential option for people who can't vote in person or don't feel safe doing so but it adds more steps to the process where something can go wrong.
  10:13am John Pietaro:

Great show, Trouble, and your posting of He Kills Me is absolutely appropriate to the moment. In the 80s and 90s I was involved in AIDS activism and that Gran Fury poster was vital to the message. We are facing a time of great urgency while national leadership smiles along in the company of the very wealthy, disregarding all scientific and humane concerns. Stinks of Reagan all over again. Frankly, this trash in the current administration is all the more vile and dangerous.
  10:14am Earth Walker:

Brian Thanks for the photos

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Irene Trudel:

There's been a nice weekend jazz series in Central Park, setting up in front of the Shakespeare statue at the 66th St. end of The Mall. 1pm Saturday, October 10 – Saxophonist Nicole Glover with her trio, 1pm Sunday, October 11 – Saxophonist Chris Potter with drummer Nasheet Waits and bassist Joe Martin. Donate what you wish. I've seen some really great sets the past few weekends: www.giantsteparts.org...
  10:15am John Pietaro:

BTW thanks for celebrating Pharogh Sanders
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am PaulRobeson1920:

@Irene @9:49 That is a very good link. Well laid out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Passaic River Blues:

@Melinda: that's a very sound plan. Also, the more people vote early, the less burden is placed on the system on Nov. 3rd. My wife and I just finished filling out 150 postcards to be sent to Maine voters. Beyond beating Trumpolini, the Maine Senate race is so important.
  10:16am Lucky:

@Irene - We saw Pharaoh Sanders maybe a year ago or a little more. The energy level was lower than the classic recordings (of, course), but his tone was still there and that was a magical thing. Similar to Ben Webster, I could just listen to Sanders play themes all day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Ken From Hyde Park:

I'd laugh if Joe Biden debates an empty chair next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am WillCrete:

@YetiBob- Agreed on that Pharoah /Chicago Underground set at the Promontory! Their horns blended in a really deep way along with Mazurek's synth sequences. As I remember it, Hamid Drake and Lakah Khan played together there that same weekend.
  10:19am Earth Walker:

John was in S.F. 80s 90s we lost 3 workers from that bloody aids
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am YETI BOB:

@melinda: Here in Chicago, the early voting site was spacious, not crowded, felt no scarier than going to a supermarket. Early voting has not yet started in NY and it looks like NJ is not doing in-person early voting at all (WTF?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Trouble:

I hear you @john pietaro. I was involved with WAC and was so impressed with the actions and visuals coming out of that hard core resistance scene. we need some of that right now!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am pantz:

Morning Modernos everywhere!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Handy Haversack:

Closest early-voting site is a 40-min. walk for us.

Got to see Mulatu Astatke in Central Pk several yrs ago. Fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am YETI BOB:

@Handy: Too bad they don't have Vote by Boat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Handy Haversack:

Or take the ferry to Manhattan? Can you early vote in a different county? The site is, unsurprisingly, unhelpful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am listener:

good morning everyone, good morning trouble. this is a fun song, the music video is a trip
Avatar 10:28am TDK60:

Handy, you and Kate should film your determined 40 minute walk. Or, an audio soundscape for the field recording underground...
  10:28am Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

This is an amazing track! Thank you for this
Avatar 10:29am βrian:

Here we have assigned polling places for regular voting. There are more options for early voting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am melinda:

@Yeti my early voting site is my city hall, only about 12 minutes away and never crowded during voting. Because it is convenient I also go there to pay property taxes and parking tickets in person for the same reason I avoid mail-in voting.
Avatar 10:30am fm Mike:

Love this song. Hello Trouble and the Modern Gang :)
Avatar 10:30am TDK60:

Handy I received info. in-mail, telling me where my early voting place is, not the same as my usual polling place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am YETI BOB:

We walked 45 minutes to downtown Chicago to vote. It was a beautiful day and we stopped for pizza. It was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am YETI BOB:

@Handy: You can't go to Manhattan. You have to go to your assigned site. Enter your address on this page: www.voteearlyny.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am YETI BOB:

@Handy: There's a form where you type in your address and it tells you where to go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Ken From Hyde Park:

@Handy - "Rockaway Beach" is 2:06, or 126 seconds. Forty minutes is 2400 seconds. So you are just over 19 Rockaway Beach Units from the polling place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Passaic River Blues:

@Yeti Bob: there is some provision for in-person voting in New Jersey on November 3, 2020; however, because the state decided to mail a ballot to every single registered voter in the state and conduct the election primarily by mail and/or early voting (depositing one's ballot at a designated Ballot Drop Box--e.g., Essex County has 24 locations throughout the county), my read is that most New Jerseyans should consider mailing or dropping off their ballots at their earliest convenience. On Election Day, New Jersey voters can also drop off their ballots at their designated polling place or, if you have a disability that makes voting unassisted difficult, or otherwise would prefer not to vote by mail/drop-off box, you can vote in person at your designated polling place via a paper, provisional ballot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am David (in London):

Hello groovers. I see you started the party without me, but I'm here now, so look lively.

Handy, Count Yeti Bob, TDK, Earth Walker, melinda, Brian et al.
Avatar 10:36am TDK60:

One voting rights journalist advocates avoiding mail-in voting, to instead go in-person. Simply due to mail-ins being usually challenged more. (complication: pandemic)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am pantz:

I've been called many things, but never an "et al".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Trouble:

i love that phrase; look lively, it's so wacky. reminds me of a bumper sticker i once saw ' jesus is coming: look busy'

Hi David-inside-London. Is voting as complex in your Realm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am YETI BOB:

Hello Sir David! I have to get to work, will be listening but not chatting so much. WFMU listeners are the greatest!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am David (in London):

Sorry to lump you in like that pantz, I ran out of listing power.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Trouble:

i like that david!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am pantz:

S'alright David. I've been called worse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am David (in London):

TDK - No, not really. I look on at the US system and it utterly baffles me. Here, the local authority (i.e. district in which you live) writes to you sporadically (though you can also do it online) and verifies your name and address. On election day you take the polling card they send you (with your details on), turn up at the local polling station (and they are LOCAL, mine is in a school about two minutes walk away), they check your name against the list and you vote. That's it.
  10:45am Earth Walker:

David. How’s it going Buddy Pal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am ParUbi:

Some neat electronic music on this episode. Very much appreciated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Ike:

@TDK60@10:36, I'd agree for swing states. But for NJ, I can't imagine there will be a ton of voter suppression, tossed ballots, etc. If I lived in PA though, I'd crawl over broken glass to vote in person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Trouble:

you said it@ike
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am David (in London):

Earth Walker, is Buddy Pal a friendlier version of Pay Pal? All good here thanks, despite the drizzle. How's la belle France?

D(iL): To be fair, that's how it is here in a normal year - I vote in a school right down the street. But we've gone off the rails of "normal" in the USA in 2020.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Adrian in London:

@David (in London) I'm similarly baffled. But are dogs outside polling stations as big a thing in the US as they are over here, often being the only good thing about elections?

Also, all registered New Jersey voters can create a "Track My Ballot" account at the State Div. of Elections website, which allows one to review one's voting history and serves as a small way to reassure one's belief in the relative integrity of the system. nj.gov...
For instance, I recently created my account and it shows my voting record back to 2011 when I washed up on the other side of the Hudson. BUT most importantly, it tracks the two prior times I voted by mail-in ballot in 2020--the May municipal election and the July Presidential primary election. In both instances, the site lists the dates my ballot was requested, issued, and received as well as the status. For the past votes, my ballot status was listed as "Accepted," i.e., not rejected for a real or perceived disqualification (improperly sealed, signed, etc.).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am David (in London):

Oh, hi Adrian. Yes, dogs making voting much more enjoyable. Waggy tails take your mind off the awfulness.

Seeing Sen Mike Lee's statement this morning, they aren't even trying to hide it anymore. They're pushing for a fascist regime this January. We have to blow them out of the water with votes.

Vote early, if possible. Drumpf is counting on being ahead on election day and will use it to influence the results. If he's not ahead by Nov 3 he will be less likely to pull a Bush 2000.

Vote Forward is a great option too. We've written 150 letters to people in different states.

It's highly unlikely tRumpf will be ahead based on early voting results. Those tend to skew dem.

@tim She hired research assistants in those cities from among her Twitter followers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Handy Haversack:

David: your earlier comment. The system here works perfectly! You just have to understand what it was designed to do: disenfranchise Black people specifically and all poor and working-class people more generally. And it works exactly as designed.

Friends, we are just about out of here, heading away for the weekend. Great packing music, Trouble! So very, very appreciated, week after week.

Be well, friends!

I just feel that involving more parties intrinsically is a crucial way to ensure a robust and vibrant democracy. Many people don't participate because of the disconnect and charade that the dominant duopoly presents.

Aric . . I dunno . . You tell me!
Avatar 11:35am Sylvia (France-NYC):

@iiibeat in France we have a lot of parties, it doesn't make things better nor motivate people to vote more. As long as we're under capitalism rules, democracy won't be vibrant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am PaulRobeson1920:

Our nations public discourse traditionally took place in print, in newspapers... New York City’s son, Neil Postman, wrote competently and compellingly on the issues we face today. Check him out or not thats ok too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am -Ken:

iiibeat, in NJ at least, mail-in ballots are verified using the signature. Not perfect, but neither was in-person voting. my daughter used to dress up as me and go vote in my place all the time.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am pantz:

While I would agree that more parties would be better for Democracy, we don't have the luxury of throwing our votes away this time around. Certainly it's something to discuss, but only AFTER we get rid of this insane clown and his posse.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Ike:

As for more parties: We need ranked-choice voting first! Fortunately we'll have it soon in NYC for local elections. Unfortunately, it'll *only* be for local elections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Passaic River Blues:

@iiibeat: there are some safeguards. For instance, in New Jersey, one's ballot is printed with their Voter ID registration number. Only one ballot carrying that number will be accepted. If you submit the ballot in person to the Board of Elections, you have to present valid identification. Voters can only submit their own ballots and, if they want another person to deliver/mail the ballot, then the bearer has to provide their name, signature, and address. Now there are various possibilities to circumvent the safeguards, but for it to be more than a negligible one-off instance would require a massive level of coordination as well as an assumption that registered voters would simply not vote themselves. Because, recall, each ballot is tied to an individual registration. ... As to "involving more parties," I think as an academic matter that may have some value. However, in the last 50 years, in my estimation they have had a net negative effect on advancing progressive ends. Nevertheless, most importantly, I can't think of a single valid reason to vote for a third-party candidate in *this* Presidential election as those on offer this year are just terrible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Trouble:

yes i did@the oscar. what an amazing use of this song, not one scene but 2!

Ken . . Still extra wiggle room there . . But . . I guess that some assurance is required.

I've voted 3rd party every election since I could vote. Both sides say the same thing, a vote for a 3rd party is a vote for blah blah blah. The stakes are always high, every election is important. Trump sucks a big one, but you know what George Carlin said. Garbage in, garbage out. These politicians are representative of our society, and that's the saddest reality of the whole situation. Society sucks. Music doesn't. Love you all

Let's be real here. People argue over which archaic political system they prefer to pretend to have while we all live in a feudal technocracy. At the end of the day, everyone needs to do whatever they can to be happy and love life and love everyone else and cope with the shit show in their own way. If that means the lesser of two evils, I think that's a noble approach m if that means fringe, go for it. Nothing matters anyway. Nihilism is 2020

@Sketch: you absolutely have every right to vote however you choose, of course, and I am someone who once was a registered with the Working Families Party and flirted Green in the late 1990s/early 00s and remain an opponent of certain right-ward elements in the Democratic Party. However, I'm not sure how one can credibly construct a well-grounded argument that there isn't a "dime's worth of difference" between (A) Monstrous Half-wit Shitbag who yesterday literally demanded the AG to arrest his opponent and whose incompetence has directly led to the needless death of tens of thousands of citizen and (B) Any Living Breathing Generic Democrat. But, again, I respect your overall POV regarding political/class superstructure governing our lives. And, in any event, people should just VOTE.
