  3:39pm Vespa Jack:

Hi Julie! That's what I first thought too. Are they outside or your own flock?

@3:38 Julie: no, it sounded wonderful for me as a listener, I guess they are enough far away from your microphone, it won't distort or anything like that.

Was it Kim Sorise' show where the dog started barking in the same room/apartment? Loved that too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm listener james from westwood:

Barking and baying! Fred rules!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Handy Haversack:

It's deafeningly loud back here from sparrows right now. So. Many. Sparrows.
Avatar 3:44pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

don’t know if there’s any fans among you, Eddie Van Halen just died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm listener james from westwood:

65. Shit! So young!
Avatar 3:46pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I genuinely like the first Van Halen album & 1984 - so while not a fan, I appreciate his work and while he was seriously ill, he indeed was not an old man, sad stuff.
Avatar 3:46pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

yes, that’s very sad
Avatar 3:47pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Julie, of course we want to hear the birds!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Julie:

Whoa, RIP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Julie:

Avatar 3:48pm Daya:

Dang! EVH died :(
Saw them in ‘78 at the Palladium in NYC when they opened for Journey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Handy Haversack:

I didn't know he was ill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Michael 98145:

Son of Pasadena. Throat cancer ...

:(
Avatar 3:50pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Re: animal sounds, I wish the trees from my backyard (a forest starts from there) hadn't been cut - when I had a window open, I could hear the local squirrels having some territorial disputes, I loved it, though they did mean business.
  3:51pm Dean:

EVH early named his band...ready for this?...Genesis.
  3:52pm Dean:

They played my wife's high school, albeit well before she attended. I saw The Dogs there, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Julie:

that I did not know, Dean
Avatar 3:52pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@3:48 Daya: I am under the impression Van Halen were a rather good live act, especially around the time you've seen them.

@3:51 Dean: hadn't heard that, maybe the surname was a better choice indeed ;)
Avatar 3:53pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Genesis! full circle for us kinda, wow :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm listener james from westwood:

Had to detour briefly to YT to play "Eruption" VERY LOUD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Handy Haversack:

Fair enough, James.
Avatar 3:58pm Daya:

@Cha Cha: It was a three-act show. VH, then Ronnie Montrose, and Journey headlining. Yes, they were really good, and a lot of fun, but definitely blown off the stage by the other two ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Julie:

Thanks to Summer & Michael, Michael in BK, Elwyn & Shannon for their pledges!!
Avatar 4:01pm Daya:

p.s.: Paul Stanley of Kiss was a few seats over from me in the audience, watching the show. Journey was showcasing their new singer, who came out halfway through their set: Steve Perry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Julie:

and thanks to Handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Handy Haversack:

You got it, Julie! Not even possible to afford to give back equal value to what we get out of WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

You are so very welcome, Julie! We love you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm listener james from westwood:

Ooh, lovely cover!
Avatar 4:04pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

like this cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Phillippe Bastille:

Nice cover!
Avatar 4:05pm Daya:

Yes, great cover. Definitely hearing influences of Kate in her voice.
  4:08pm Dean:

That was one heck of a concert! VH opening for Ronnie Montrose, for whom Sammy Hagar sang on the first album, a great rock landmark, and then Journey morphing from cool post-Santana band into kitschy pop band.
Avatar 4:11pm Daya:

Yes, great show! Most people are unfamiliar with the fact that they were a much different band on their first 4 albums, before Perry.
Also, during a solo, Neal Schon saw a friend in the audience and went OFF soloing, incredible!
  4:12pm Dean:

I remember hearing "Kahoutek" on the radio off the first album. Dug it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Handy Haversack:

Bluejay just scattered like two dozen sparrows with a surprise attack from below. It's like Wild Kingdom out here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Julie:

aww that's nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Julie:

those blue jays are tough
Avatar 4:15pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

absolutely off-topic, sorry dear friends - but Dean, are you familiar with the 1970 album MAGNEETTIMIEHEN KUOLEMA by PEKKA STRENG? That's Tasvallan Presidentti accompanying Mr. Streng on that album, and in my opinion Tolonen at his finest (even if it is a bit subdued in some respect for his playing).
Avatar 4:16pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

* aargh, typo... Tasavallan Presidentti!
  4:17pm Dean:

I do not know that, PCC2000, at least not by name. Will check discogs for cover...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Handy Haversack:

Sometimes they will imitate a hawk just to scare the sparrows away. Ultimate. Badass.
  4:18pm Dean:

Nope, not at all familiar...except for the record label logo, which to this day has the power to startle me.
Avatar 4:22pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:17 Dean: it is a classic! I am afraid I might have played the album from a not-cheap 70s or 80s pressing last Friday, after getting inebriated. Enough of me - it is a very beautiful album, very SINCERE music in the same way Donovan is. Pekka Streng was terminally ill, and knew it already when making that album. Three years after the lovely 1972 follow-up album, KESÄMAA, he died aged 26.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Handy I have a spare hawk or two up here I can lend you if the blue jays aren't doing the job
  4:23pm Dean:

Thanks for the tip. Will have to acquire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm listener james from westwood:

Aw, I love this love song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Julie:

Pekka Streng will have to check him out
  4:24pm Dean:

And Jukka Tolonen.
Avatar 4:24pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:23 Dean: no worries, one easy way is to get a CD with both Magneettimiehen Kuolema & Kesämaa.
Avatar 4:24pm Daya:

Wow, 3DN! Takes me right back to my elementary school days ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Julie:

is that a Rhodes piano?
Avatar 4:24pm βrian:

Blue Jays in the distance are fine, and for me, evoke the woods of northern Michigan. But, damn, they can make a racket.
Avatar 4:24pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:24 Dean: Tolonen is not on Kesämaa the second Streng album though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Julie:

my sisters had a LOT of their albums
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Julie:

blue Jays was a project by Justin Hayward and John Lodge I think it was
Avatar 4:28pm Daya:

I liked all of their song (with the exception of “Jeremiah...” which was overplayed on the radio, imo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm listener james from westwood:

Julie, this is an honest-to-Murgatroyd quote from the book I just started editing. (The author is piano-shopping.). Perfect timing for this show being on during:

He walks me back into the showroom, to a beautiful black Estonia piano. He sits down and starts to play. First, Elton John’s “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters,” followed by Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The music sounds wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Julie:

my sisters sang Joy to the World to me ALL the time. I love it still.
Avatar 4:29pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Thanks for the reminder Julie, even if it is a megapopular band, I have nothing from Three Dog Night. The situation must change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Handy Haversack:

It The perpetrator was a juvenile bluejay that was just a chick back when lockdown was new. Watched clutches of jays and cardinals come of age back here this summer, not to mention the ongoing orgy of overfed sparrows!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Julie:

I knew THAT Joy to the World before I knew the Xmas carol!
Avatar 4:30pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:29 Julie: sounds like a precious memory!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Julie:

yep. That song and of course Bobby Sherman's Julie
Avatar 4:34pm Daya:

Yep, they were a mega-popular band in the day (doing other people’s s songs), but they had so many hits that were just great listening :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi. Tough news about Eddie Van Halen. Ozzie outlives another one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Julie:

Daya I didn't know for a long time that those were all covers. Who did Joy to the World originally?
  4:37pm Dean:

Hoyt Axton wrote it. Don't know if he rec'd it before 3DN.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Julie:

hey Ken. Yeah poor EVH
Avatar 4:40pm Daya:

I know Hoyt Axton wrote it (I liked him as an actor too, playing Shirley Muldowney’s dad in “Heart Like a Wheel” with Bonnie Bedelia) but I think 3DN did it first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm B R M:

Thanks Julie ... I ❤️
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Andrew Waterloo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Mark Hurst:

Pick me up something, too, Handy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm listener james from westwood:

I bloody well hope we have DJs and events and whatnot at the station again. Seven months ago today was my last Marathon shift. I miss answering phones and stickering postcards and stuffing envelopes and swag bags.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Stanley:

Feel you, James.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Mark Hurst:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Julie:

there's some wonderful stuff on there for sure
Avatar 4:58pm Daya:

And of course it opened with my all-time fav Kate song ;)

  5:11pm Mr Nobody:

This Weather Girl taking me back somewhere. Too bad I can't remember where. I remember the song vividly but I can't think of when or where.
Avatar 5:11pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

This might be my favorite song ever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Julie:

the Wire one?
Avatar 5:18pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

WIRE! It took me a while to realize the first version I jheard of this song was not the original but a 1979 Finnish cover - "Vaihda Vapaalle" by Sehr Schnell (funny name, they weren't German or indeed very fast in spite of being a punk band)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

Yes. Wire!
Avatar 5:19pm Daya:

Wire was a seminal ‘punk’ band :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Michael 98145:

Love it. Bird Sounds of Covidaloca.
Avatar 5:24pm Daya:

Yep, different bands, like Fleetwood Mac ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Julie:

haha covidaloca
Avatar 5:27pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

There is indeed more early Pink Floyd - even they are there as a backing band, I still did not know this existed:

Damn EVH. Never a huge fan of the band but what a player.
Avatar 5:56pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I was never a fan either but this is soooo good. Lovely of you to play this Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm chris:

Avatar 6:06pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Moi aussi ;) I probably have delivered some Danny Kirwan-era Fleetwood Mac propaganda.
  6:06pm Thomas:

First time listener to this show - absolutely awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Julie:

thanks Thomas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm 23 Wolves:

I'm loving this set, and thank you very much for the Eddie tribute earlier, I turned it all the way up. I love 80s music in general and this Spandau Ballet is very tasty!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Julie:

and thank you for your pledge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Julie:

thank you 23 wolves!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Julie:

still taking requests for next week's bonus hour. the bird idea is good but more ideas welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Handy Haversack:

Julie, how about the Witching Hour: all the Pagan and witchy songs you want to fit into it! Hex-a-licious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Julie:

that would be great for the end of the month, Halloweenish!
Avatar 6:17pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Hmmm, I have no other ideas than the one I already made, which was favorite movie moments. Does not have to be exclusively written for a movie, and can also be from a series - like the netflix series The End Of The F**king World has a lot of creative use of previously released music. As for movies, besides an obvious choice like Trainspotting, Morvern Callar is a movie that makes good use of previously released music, from Can to The Mamas And The Papas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Julie:

I don't always remember the songs used in movies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm chris:

i like that, too, Handy. how about songs with a color in the name from projects/bands with a color in their name? fun DJ puzzle: i would fail miserably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Julie:

witches for the 27th for sure
Avatar 6:20pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

No 80s show without Japan. That is just how it is for me.❤️❤️❤️
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Handy Haversack:

Julie, I picked up purple Doritos, vegan cheese, and hippie peanut butter: you want any of that from the store?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Julie:

ooh purple doritos sounds amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Julie:

is the hippie peanut butter made with real hippies?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Handy Haversack:

They are the best! All yours!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Julie:

this sounds nothing like the Thompson Twins I remember
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm chris:

notes of patchouli and nag champa in this hippie peanut butter?
Avatar 6:23pm Daya:

Agreed, this sounds vaguely XTC-ish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Handy Haversack:

Instead of sugar, Julie, yup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Julie:

okay I think it's gonna be birds next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm chris:

nice! looking forward to birdie hour, and witchy hour as well. :)
Avatar 6:28pm Daya:

Birds! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Handy Haversack:

"Like Cockatoos"!
  6:30pm Dean:

Heard Japan live at the Whisky around the time of the second album, and interviewed their then former guitarist, Rob Dean, when he was playing with Vivabeat.
Avatar 6:32pm Daya:

I just remember the song “This Is Japan” from that era ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Julie:

there's a band called Like Cockatoos?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Handy Haversack:

And, er, "Swan, Swan, Hummingbird."
Avatar 6:34pm Daya:

Yay! Romeo Void! Love Debora Iyall!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Julie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Handy Haversack:

Are you doing only band names? Or songs too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Julie:

I'm not sure. last time I did bands maybe I'll do songs this time

I do love The Chameleons!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Michael 98145:

guess so!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Julie:

No really?
  6:39pm Marci:

All we need to hear is The Monochrome Set ❤️
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Handy Haversack:

Oh, Julie! Meant to tell you how much Kate and I love Johanna Warren. We heard her on your show, and we picked up /Chaotic Good/. So good! Thanks for that discovery.
  6:40pm Miles of Middle Texas:

✨❤️
Avatar 6:41pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Alongside The Sound and Comsat Angels, The Chameleons are incredibly underrated or at least were back then. The Chameleons and The Sound did have at least some cult following in continental Europe, but perhaps overlooked in their native UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Handy Haversack:

Cha Cha, you have to stop bottling up your emotions! It's not good for you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Julie:

You're very welcome Handy! @Marci sorry I don't have any right now
Avatar 6:42pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:41 Handy Haversack: where have all the hearts gone...

(I stole them all)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Julie:

these guys I actually saw live a few years ago but missed them in the 80s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Handy Haversack:

What a sound!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Julie:

should I do an all 80s show?
Avatar 6:44pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:44 Julie: should I answer that question with hearts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Julie:

some people hate 80s music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Handy Haversack:

New Model Army has plenty of songs from the eighties ... and so do the Pogues!
Avatar 6:46pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

If you'll give an all 80s show even half as good as this - you'll know what to do!
Avatar 6:48pm Daya:

Cha Cha: love the Comsat Angels! Saw them in the 80s in New Haven, hung out with them backstage, and then the club tossed us all out (including the band) because the employees wanted to go home ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Julie:

wow I don't know that band at ALL
Avatar 6:48pm Daya:

I’m up for all 80s! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm chris:

yeah, me too, up for the all 80's show. this hour of 80s has been great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Julie:

okay not next week but the following, and I'll make the 4th hour 80s by request
Avatar 6:50pm Daya:

The Angels definitely flew under the radar, unfortunately
Avatar 6:50pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:48 Daya: even if I am a bit "never meet your heroes" sort of a person, I'm still so happy for you! Unfortunately I never saw them - they did do a few shows at least either late 2000s or early 2010s or something... The Chameleons (or more like The Chameleons Vox) I have seen at least - no regrets. Loved it.
Avatar 6:52pm Daya:

They were awesome, down to earth guys. They invited us backstage, shared their buffet with us, rolled and smoke a few with us, then we walked the streets of New Haven until late. Definitely very cool guys!
Avatar 6:52pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:50 Daya: yet the Comsat Angels were probably the biggest of the underrated three (Comsat Angels, The Sound & The Chameleons) as they had some chart success with the later version of "Independence Day"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Michael 98145:

Thanx again, Julie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Julie!
Avatar 6:53pm Daya:

Yes, “Independence Day” was their ‘hit’ :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm spodiodi:

thanks for the Van Halen, Julie \m/
take care, everyone <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm chris:

thanks, Julie. see ya around, all. :)
Avatar 6:54pm Daya:

Thank Julie! Great show as always, highlight of my week :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Michael 98145:

Ooh, Pogues
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, Julie!

Be well, Ensouled Ones! Always great to see you all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm chris:

and a happy b-day weekend to you in advance, Handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm chresti:

Hi Julie! I was listening in the shower!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Julie:

hi Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, chris!

Hi. chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm chris:

Saved by Zero never gets old for me. and we've all heard it a million times. classic stuff here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Julie:

yeah I wanted to end with a real hit.
Avatar 6:57pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I am excited about the all 80s show! If I can make requests, please play something from Comsat Angels' Sleep No More album and/or something from The Sound's All Fall Down album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Julie:

Cha Cha I will try and find both of those. But the last hour of that show will be requests so save something for then :)
Avatar 6:59pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:58 Julie: yes, I wrote that with the request hour in mind
It's been a blast. Thanks Julie and all you kind souls wandering through this dark night, please stay alive and well, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Michael 98145:

Ta!
Avatar 7:00pm Daya:

Yes, Comsat Angels, and something from All Fall Down!
