A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar 9:00am βrian:

I'm here for the birds and I'm here for the words.

And yes, the music.
  9:01am Listener Bop Monroe:

greetings from sunny Tannersville.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Trouble:

good morning people of the thursday world!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Handy Haversack:

Good Thursday, Trouble and all the Troubled. High skies here in NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Deborah:

Good Morning!

Why does Ana d remind me of a mix of Nico and strangely, Edith Piaf?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am YETI BOB:

@BopMonroe: Every day I wonder - is that Tannersville PA or NJ? Poconos or Catskills? Of course it doesn't matter but that doesn't stop me from wondering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Aaron Working In Newark:

Good Morning Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Adrian in London:

Good afternoon Trouble. I love Ana D, and keep meaning to buy the vinyl version of this wonderful album, when it's not at a silly Discogs price.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am YETI BOB:

I meant, NY not NJ. There's no Tannersville in NJ!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am bNowb:

What a gorgeous song by - ana d
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am Handy Haversack:

Today would have been -- is? -- my dad's 104th birthday!

I'm sure he'd have liked the show, Trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am Peter from Dover NJ:

Good morning Trouble. Good morning Handy Haversack, Deborah, and Yeti Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Phillippe Bastille:

Good morning!
Hey Handy, how did Kate's appt's go?
  9:10am David in London:

Hello to the Troublesome. Checking in to say hello. I’m painting a porch, so won’t be very chatty, but hey Handy, Count Yeti Bob, bop, Adrian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Mx. Granny (e/em):

hello, Trouble, WFMU crew and folx! This set sounds so sweet and lovely in the gloaming here in SF.
Avatar 9:11am TDK60:

Sufficiently okay morning Trouble, listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am YETI BOB:

Adrian: Just curious, which Ana D record are you referring to? "Galaxia (live on KCRW)" is selling on Discogs for $2.
Avatar 9:11am βrian:

@DIL: Please add some lounging cats to the picture!
Swag For Life Member 9:11am GeoSinPhilly:

Follow this up with Sunlight by the Youngbloods!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Handy Haversack: hey there! 104, what a different world your father grew up in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Trouble:

one of the most amazing concerts i have experienced in NYC was Ana D. It was like a seance, she radiated energy
Avatar 9:12am TDK60:

GeoSinPhilly: The Youngbloods?!! I saw them once long ago. Afraid to share the year, some might faint.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Handy Haversack:

Steady hands, David!

Peter, Mx. Granny, YB, TDK60, βrian, all -- hi!

Phillippe, thanks for asking! She had to have two appts. in Manhattan with two different dentists, but they ended up between them extracting the whole tooth. She's still sore and swollen but doing much better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Trouble:

giant welcome to listeners far and wide. amazing to think WFMU is in the geographical middle of people listening in london and san fran. wowza!
Avatar 9:15am Wallis...:

Checking my Spanish skills: was it "Peace To You" by Black Ice?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Phillippe Bastille:

Ah. Glad she's feeling better. Back and singing again soon I hope!

DiL, you missed a spot.
  9:15am Reno D:

Hey, Trouble, I took your suggestion (a few months ago) to make one’s own yogurt to avoid all those endless plastic containers. I’ve been making it weekly over the pilot light of my ol’ Chambers range. Yum!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am YETI BOB:

@David: May the bugs stay out of the wet paint.

@HH: Here's to your dad. My father would be 94 if he were still here (but he only made 60). I think he'd enjoy the music, but he'd be sad about the state of the world. And he'd be happy to see that I didn't turn out to be a TOTAL fuck-up.
Avatar 9:16am Sylvia (France-NYC):

Hello Trouble, and all of you!
Avatar 9:16am TDK60:

Hola early riser Granny; been a while. / Hi Handy; please relay a "hola" to partner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Mx. Granny (e/em):

TDK60: yep, back at it. Insomnia is much better with WFMU. <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am YETI BOB:

@Reno/Everyone: Yes! Make your own yogurt! All you need is milk and a little yogurt! (Don't buy a silly "yogurt maker")
Avatar 9:18am βrian:

Used to make gallons of goat's milk yogurt in a hot attic. So good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Mx. Granny (e/em):

a thermos can be a good yogurt maker
Avatar 9:19am dougseidel:

do you need a fancy thermometer or anything?
Avatar 9:19am TDK60:

Hiya, painting-a-porch David in Londonville. I painted a door this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Trouble:

great to hear@ reno D. it is soooooo easy, right? and more delicioso without thickeners and plastic containers... i just ordered a gallon of goat milk from an amish farmer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Buddha of Suburbia:

This playlist is WONDERFUL! I went to Spain in my early 20s and in a small village called Malaga, I saw all these Flamenco dance students walking around. They put on a show at the local bar...the guitarists looked unkempt and shady...but it was delightful. The girls danced with so much grace and passion. Thank you for transporting me back there....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Mx. Granny (e/em):

i've never needed a thermometer for yogurt, you can test by feel, the way folx test baby bottles!
  9:21am city 3:

Beautiful music! Thank you
Avatar 9:21am βrian:

@Trouble: Yes, especially the thickeners for me. It's like eating mortar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Adrian in London:

@YetiBob, I'm after Satélite 99, on green vinyl. They're about 30-40 quid, but I missed one for £25 on eBay the other day, annoyingly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Buddha of Suburbia:

OOh! The home made yogurt sounds cool! But I have an acid reflux situation when it comes to dairy stuff. Adrian in London? It's been at least a year since I've seen you around. Hope you are well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am melinda:

Good morning Trouble and moderners
Avatar 9:25am TDK60:

Hello of Buddha of the far northa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Handy Haversack:

Greetings relayed and returned, TDK60!

YB, my dad somehow made it to a week shy of eighty! But similar feelings about how he'd feel about matters. Here's to your dad, too!
  9:26am Reno D:

Wow, a hot attic and a Thermos: brilliant!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am YETI BOB:

I just do my yogurt in the oven, with the heat of the pilot light. Never used a thermometer.
  9:28am David:

I just want to say this playlist is poppin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am YETI BOB:

@Buddha: Yogurt is supposed to help with acid reflux. Especially if you don't add anything to it ...
Avatar 9:30am TDK60:

Practicing my Spanish, I'll guess Ela Minus' tune = The sky is not made of nothing. [si?]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am YETI BOB:

@Buddha: here's some info courtesty of the AARP (which I'll be old enough to join in just a few weeks!) www.aarp.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am melinda:

it all depends on the cause of the reflux, there are many
Avatar 9:31am John from Madison:

Officially up and listening. Thanks..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Peter from Dover NJ:

@ Buddha of Suburbia 9:20. Years ago, I ate lunch in a Spanish restaurant in the Ironbound one day. They had a flamenco dancer on the TV. She was 65 if she was a day. She had soul, grace, and muscle definition most body builders would kill for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Peter from Dover NJ:

Signing off. Be well, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am YETI BOB:

Adrian: There's one on Discogs right now for £18.99, but it has no cover. Hmmm.
  9:34am Reno D:

As a novice, I’ve been using an instant read thermometer. The insulated Chambers oven wasn’t warm enough with just the pilot flame. The Thermowell compartment is too hot (150°), but the surface pilot, using an enameled cast iron pot with a lid, wrapped in a few layers of tea towels does the trick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Speaking of fermentation, I'll be making some sauerkraut this weekend.
Avatar 9:35am TDK60:

I looked up one of those online Spanish-to-English things. They correct me. It's: "Heaven is nobody's." Hee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am YETI BOB:

@Woods: I fermented some mashed chili peppers and made some killer hot sauce
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Priscilla:

What!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am YETI BOB:

YO ICEPACK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Priscilla:

Hola DJ Icepack!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am melinda:

@Woods did you have to experiment much before it worked out? I tried once and it sucked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Handy Haversack:

Nice, DJ Icepack!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am MikeG:

Does Trouble know you have her birds?
Avatar 9:37am Roberto:

Good idea, having Icepack back announce the Spanish language tracks :)
  9:37am Listener Gregory:

I liked that Juana Molina. Very rhythmic.
DJIP!
  9:37am Listener Bop Monroe:

why gramma, what a deep voice you have...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@YETI BOB Nice! I've never done that...and I'm a huge hot sauce fan. Maybe I'll do that next year. The farm stand near me sells these gorgeous Hungarian peppers. Super tasty and mucho de hotto!
  9:38am Listener Robert:

Was that DJ Ice Pack? He knows Spanish now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Mick:

DJ Icepack! Good to hear you live over the airwaves!
Avatar 9:39am βrian:

We have a surfeit of jalapeños, so we're thinking of pickling. Oughta be pretty simple.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Trouble:

yes dj icepack is quite the spanish speaker, i am very proud of his accent!
  9:39am Reno D:

Omg, I’ve never heard dj Icepack’s grown up voice before! Gosh, the years just fly by.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Trouble and DJ Icepack. I hope things are going well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@melida I got into it because I'd discovered this guy named Sandor Katz. So no, the first try worked for me. Just shredded the cabbage, massaged with a bunch of salt, added it (along with some garlic cloves) to a large glass jar. Then (this was a trick I got from Alton Brown), I placed a large ziplock bag on top of the kraut and filled it with water. This forced the kraut down under it's own juices. Then just put a tea towel over the thing and put it in the pantry. Can't remember how long I had it in there before trying it. Two weeks maybe? A month? But it was really tasty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am YETI BOB:

@melinda: It can definitely go "off". I had to throw away the first batch of hot sauce because the wrong kind of microbes got in there. Helps to check in and smell it every day. It's really not too hard, don't get discouraged!

@Woods: I grew chili peppers this summer and my plants were really productive, so I've been coming up with all kinds of things to do with them. Peach-habanero jam was divine.
  9:43am Listener Bop Monroe:

YB, Tannersville NY, here in Rip Van Winkle country, down the road from Hunter Mtn ski area

Just harvested many small hot red peppers.
will try the sauce route.
Avatar 9:43am βrian:

My brother has a designated "kraut rock," which is a large round flat stone he places atop the fermenting sauerkraut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Vivian:

Good Morning folks. Enjoying this conversation about fermenting, hot sauce and such. As I type, drying some peppers. Think they're five spice, a new plant in the garden this year. Love the shape of the peppers, couldn't resist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am YETI BOB:

@Woods: Great tips. Keeping the fermenting cabbage (or peppers) submerged will prevent a lot of problems.

@BopMonroe: I've gotten some great recipes and info from this website (no affiliation) www.chilipeppermadness.com . I just made the Caribbean mango-habanero sauce (with allspice), it's fantastic. And Xni-Pec will change your life!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I'm also fond of quick-pickling red onion and/or shallot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Mx. Granny (e/em):

i always get the best recipes and meal plans on WFMU
  9:46am David in London:

Just had to get down off the ladder to say that “What you been doing? Who you been wooing?” is my new favourite lyric.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Mx. Granny (e/em):

sometimes that's pizza and cannabis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am melinda:

@Woods I have Sandor's book and used his basic recipe. Maybe next time I'll try the ziploc trick. It's frustrating when you don't know where the problem lies.
Avatar 9:48am Roberto:

Uh oh -- is this the backlash coming?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@melinda My neighbor (the organic gardener who gifted me a bunch of cabbage) has a big crockery bowl. I think he uses a plate to keep the stuff submerged. But the bag 'o water trick really does work.
Avatar 9:48am Roberto:

Sounds like a techno backlash.
  9:49am Barba Yiorgi:

whoa, where's Nina?
  9:49am Listener Bop Monroe:

bookmarking site now. love it! thnx YB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am YETI BOB:

@melinda: what happened? mold? funky odor? what was the nature of the failure?
Avatar 9:49am Wallis...:

am I the only one hearing Terry Riley? Freaking out a bit...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar 9:50am TDK60:

Darnit. My fave Terry Riley piece will now be lodged in peoples' memory as a something-not-working-right sound memory. Sniff..sigh..
  9:50am Listener Gregory:

Well, the Terry Riley is fantastic, in any case.
Avatar 9:50am Wallis...:

"We are experiencing technically difficulty...please stand by..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Mx. Granny (e/em):

TDK60: i was just thinking something along those lines! Got to see the live performance of this last year!. WOW.
Avatar 9:51am TDK60:

Granny, can I pretend touch your Ear?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@TDK60 What's the name of that Terry Riley?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Mx. Granny (e/em):

TDK60: well, gosh, why not? I'll go get it!
  9:52am Lucky:

Whew! Good work.
Avatar 9:52am Wallis...:

though maybe it was from the split 7" Simone & Riley put out on Matador
Avatar 9:52am βrian:

Oh, a detachable ear!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Ear it is!
Avatar 9:52am Wallis...:

Woods: it's "A Rainbow In Curved Air"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Wallis...: in my dreams! YES!
Avatar 9:53am TDK60:

Woods - It's "A Rainbow in Curved Air" from the same LP. 1969.
Avatar 9:53am βrian:

"Here, ear! Cmon! That's a good ear!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Trouble:

i guess backlash blues crashed my system. michelle popped music in and now we are back. sooooooo nerve racking!
Avatar 9:54am Wallis...:

was a strong (if a bit jarring) juxtaposition
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am melinda:

@Yeti it didn't smell bad, but it was just salty with no tang
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am PaulRobeson1920:

Good Morning You All!! & a Happy 96th Birthday to Jimmy Carter! Hoorray!
Avatar 9:54am βrian:

What, Michele has found a second L? Mirabile dictu!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@TDK60 Ah, right. Isn't that his most famous thing? I really do love it.
Avatar 9:54am Roberto:

The airwaves couldn't handle the truth Nina was puttin' down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am YETI BOB:

@melinda: sounds like it didn't even start to ferment. that's a little unusual. maybe too much salt?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Jimmy Carter Says Yes
Avatar 9:56am Wallis...:

I'd say In C is his crowd pleaser/encore song
Avatar 9:57am Roberto:

I would have voted for Jimmy if I'd been old enough.
Avatar 9:57am TDK60:

Woods- Not sure, probably among his most famous. Little story. I DJed an art show once, earlier this century. I played 'Rainbow.' A fellow came up, asked what it was, it sounded so fresh. He was shocked it was from '69.
Avatar 9:57am Wallis...:

"Just play the hits, Riley!!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am YETI BOB:

@melinda: I encourage you to keep experimenting, cabbage is pretty cheap.

@Granny: Damn that's a good one. My parents were volunteers for JC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Mx. Granny (e/em):

i got the Brooklyn Raga Massive "In C" in my WFMU loot, and have been listening to it a LOT. WOnderful!
  9:59am Barba Yiorgi:

all this stuff is good. but what happened to Miss Simone? she kinda got interrupted.
Avatar 9:59am TDK60:

I saw Riley once. It was different, his Indian raga singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Trouble:

@ barbara y...computer program that runs my choices to wfmu crashed while nina was singing. i rebooted and am running again. when that happens the board operator at WFMU slaps on music to fill the silence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am YETI BOB:

@Granny: Brooklyn Raga Massive made this great record "Ragamala" with Adam Rudolph's "Go:Organic" orchestra, it's even more massive. Have you heard it?
Avatar 10:02am Dances with Moomins:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am YETI BOB:

  10:05am Barba Yiorgi:

ok of course thnx for explaining, Nina was being so righteously preachful that for an instant I wondered if there was something else at fault. great save, though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Hughie Considine:

This sublime Boswell Sisters song is the theme music for the utterly fabulous The History of Rock Music in 500 Songs podcast. Lovely to hear the whole darn thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Hughie Considine:

@adrian: heartbreaking still, that she is gone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am karlward:

Always happy to hear Trish Keenan. I'm reminded of this quote from her that I think about often: [Psychedelia isn’t] a world only reachable by hallucinogens but obtainable by questioning what we think is real and right, by challenging the conventions of form and temper… I discovered psychedelia and it seemed to have self-help properties that allowed me to let go of an immobilizing working class pride that was cementing a false identity into my psyche, stopping me from transforming.
Avatar 10:29am TDK60:

Love the Broadcast too, Adrian..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Vivian:

@ Trouble, I agree. So young.

Never heard of Broadcast until Irwin was playing it when Trish Keegan died. Always learning about great music everytime I listen to the 'Mu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Handy Haversack:

That was a great set. I don't know Broadcast as well as I'd like to.

Sitting outside and working. I had to put on jeans, and I might need socks and a sweatshirt even!

Question: what's worse than "funk" carioca? Ans: "funk" carioca mixed with peruvian cumbia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am YETI BOB:

@karlward: Thanks - brilliant.

I don't really know Broadcast either, this is amazing. Anyone know what kind of keyboard she played? Really nice sound.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Trouble:

@Vivian, it was so very shocking when Trish died. Ben Graves from the blog toys and techniques came out to WFMU and did a wonderful tribute show to Trish/Broadcast on jan 25, 2011. it can be found in my archives

Crashing can happen for a lot of different reasons many of them outside one's control. That there can be show at all is a minor miracle.

@Trouble Don't worry about the crash. Those of us who are working at home can sympathise strongly, and, let's face it, there are worse things happening…
