HI Kitten Sparkles!
Avatar 3:00pm Kitten Sparkles:

Playing a previously unreleased (by me, anyway) LIVE DEVO tape that I recorded on a reel to reel, from a board feed on August 2nd, 1977 @ the Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco. Probably in the second hour...
Avatar 3:01pm Kitten Sparkles:

Hi, DD!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Mr Fab:

The vortex? Suck me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Carmichael:

Whoa, I loved going to Mabuhay!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Rich in Washington:

DEVO!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Mr Fab:

And what was the name of that band that Sheena spun after Otis' nude, lewd, rude show? Why, the Titty Twisters Orchestra, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm StringOFperils:

"eternious" history!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Otissss:

Hello Kitten and pals, tuned in, sitting at the bottom of the vortex. Lots of light down here to work by thankfully. Oh what's that in the darkness, it's
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm StringOFperils:

Whoa!!?? What!? DEVO off the board, to open reel in '77. I think I need to hear that.
  3:13pm Kurty:

Torture
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm StringOFperils:

I bins bitch-slapped.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm StringOFperils:

Srry, I shouldn't use that language on here....not even ironically. Sorry
  3:18pm Debbie Davenport:

My souly feels so holy...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Mr Fab:

I request this whole Harry Perry album, if it all sounds like this. Like the Kipper Kids set loose in a Casio factory
  3:30pm pdmillar:

Hi Don, MIDI rocking here in ridgewood
  3:31pm novakscene:

Who, me?
Avatar 3:32pm Kitten Sparkles:

If that is indeed who you are...
Avatar 3:33pm Kitten Sparkles:

IT IS MY CHALLENGE!!!
  3:35pm novakscene:

I may not be me but I am definitely challenged.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Mr Fab:

Ha, I first discovered this song on a cassette whilst perusing an Indian grocery store. Figured with a song title like “I Am A Break Dancer” I couldn’t go wrong. (Those tapes smelled like curry for the longest time...)
  3:36pm Martinibomb:

hola Kitten Sparkles!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Mr Fab:

Again, gotta pour some beer out for the late great Jac Zinder for hippin me to the nutty side of Bollywood.

Avatar 3:46pm Sem:

Present, along for the goings-on. Hello, all.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Rich in Washington:

for the longest time - anytime I'd see references to it online - I assumed that Tom Dissevelt and Kid Baltan thing was relatively modern. The name Kid Baltan sounds like someone's hip DJ name or something. I had no idea it was an Ur-Electronic thing.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Otissss:

I know huh, like the music... the name sounds modern, like Tom and Kid on Warp records.
  3:51pm Martinibomb:

My cat likes this music
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Mr Fab:

yeah, those cats were pioneers, goin back to the '60s. Perhaps the 'Kid' name was a reference to westerns. they were big in them days.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Mr Fab:

i mean Tom D and Kid B, not martinibomb's cats. Tho they may have pioneered something. Avant-garde mice chasing.
  3:53pm Martinibomb:

I only have one cat for the record
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Rich in Washington:

Cats like Meowsique Concret
  3:55pm novakscene:

Noh Idea?
  3:56pm novakscene:

Lesh is more!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Mr Fab:

MB: you only have one cat for the record. But we have many records for the cat.
  4:04pm Martinibomb:

^Aaaaaaaaand Otis has many records about cats
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Mr Fab:

Japanese Noh drama dudes are like, i don't want noh drama, baby.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Mr Fab:

save the drama for your (Yokohama) mama.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Rich in Washington:

HA!
  4:05pm Martinibomb:

Mr Fab are you coming to the WFMU Karaoke party? ME and the missus are doing Jackson
  4:08pm Debbie Davenport:

You're smooth Kitten Sparkles. I have trouble telling when I'm listening to an album with layers already on the track or if you're doing the layering.
Avatar 4:11pm Kitten Sparkles:

DEVO comin' up fairly soon!
  4:12pm Martinibomb:

ooooh baby!
  4:12pm Debbie Davenport:

yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Carmichael:

Heya Sparkle Cat and Noh lovers. I loves me some blips and blops.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Mr Fab:

Hey i have Friday off, think i can make it to the party. "Jackson," great choice!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:19pm chresti:

Hi Kitten and sparklers! Home from work!

Who's gonna sing "How I Wrote Elastic Man"?
Avatar 4:23pm Kitten Sparkles:

If it's August 2nd, 1977 it is!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:24pm WR:

This devo recording is so deliciously raw. Lovely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm StringOFperils:

@FAB > I was wondering the same thing last week. Who will tackle 'How I Wrote Elastic man'?
  4:26pm Debbie Davenport:

"Deliciously raw", yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Carmichael:

You Got Praying Hands!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm StringOFperils:

Dance The Poot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm StringOFperils:

Nice artyfact!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Rich in Washington:

That guy's doing a great Murray Saul impersonation! One of their Ohio entourage, I wonder?
Avatar 4:33pm Kitten Sparkles:

That was me saying "LSD"!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Rich in Washington:

Early DEVO sure got tight by '77. Just like playing the Reeperbahn hardened the Beatles, I think playing Cleveland and then New York really honed their chops.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Rich in Washington:

I hope before I die we get to hear those tapes which both Mothersbaugh and Casale say exist: the fully Eno-fied version of Q: Are We Not Men?

Live Show Dubbing hands
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm StringOFperils:

Ha ha ha
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Mr Fab:

both Mark and Jerry had the covids this year, which pointed its' finger at Devo: "Now we must sacrifice ourselves/so many others may live." Luckily, it didn't come to that.
  4:46pm Martinibomb:

I didn't know Jerry had it too!!! whoa
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Rich in Washington:

Oh wow. I didn't hear about Jerry. Dang.
Avatar 4:47pm Kitten Sparkles:

When man did that solo he was running across the tables!
  4:48pm Martinibomb:

oh hey! @Kitten Sparkles can you mention Hologram Teen is a guest on my show 2morrow??? Pretty puhlease with kitten sparkly sugars on top?
Avatar 4:50pm Kitten Sparkles:

What time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Feldpausch:

SO good... Gut Feeling...
Avatar 4:50pm Kitten Sparkles:

And whts the name of your show again?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Otissss:

I was only 8 in 1977, but I would have loved this show.
  4:51pm Martinibomb:

@Kitty "Medium Cool" Thanks mon ami!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Aitch:

In late and straight into Gut Feeling, a big Devo fave, nice
  4:52pm Martinibomb:

I was.... 4 in 1977 and still would have loved this show.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Otissss:

At 8, I would have been at the bar drawing Devo with crayons drinking a Roy Rogers.
  4:53pm Martinibomb:

this ends with Booji boy singing the words get stuck in my throat
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:53pm chresti:

I saw this show at the Starwood, I think.
Avatar 4:54pm Kitten Sparkles:

No, it doesn't - that was the next night!
Avatar 4:55pm Kitten Sparkles:

What time is show tmorrow?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Rich in Washington:

i woulda been 11 when this came out and Dr. Demento really primed me for weirdness like this, but really a couple of years later.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Aitch:

This Devo is marvellous! Fully Eno'ed Are We Not Men??? I NEED to hear that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm StringOFperils:

Hah! This is so out there for late 1977. I bought this when it came out almost a year later, and it was ahead of the game then.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Mr Fab:

Martinibomb's show is Wed. Sep 30th, 4pm - 7pm Eastern
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm StringOFperils:

Not that a lot of 'new wave'haadn't been around for some time already, but not DEVO
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Carmichael:

I went into the military 2 weeks after this concert.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Rich in Washington:

I remember seeing a feature on DEVO on some PBS show, were they were reporting on them like they were some kind of worrisome trend in music (perhaps tongue-in-cheek) and they actually scared the crap out of me, they were so strange. A year or two later, I was obsessed by them, esp. after their SNL performance.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Otissss:

Well, that sure was fun, thanks DB!
  5:00pm Martinibomb:

Thanks @Fab yup! Annnnnd it's my Birthday tomorrow :-0
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, Aitch, there exists master tapes which had all of Eno's contributions. He played and sang all over it, and in mixing sessions, Jerry and Mark just politely faded his tracks down. You really don't hear too much of Eno on the final mix, but he's there.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Mr Fab:

let's go here!
www.wfmu.org...
  5:01pm Debbie Davenport:

Rich, one time I was at a church youth group event and we found out Devo was playing nearby and my friends wanted to go. I was afraid of going to hell.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Rich in Washington:

But Mark and Jerry have variously stated over the years that the tapes exist and both tease the possibility of releasing it as an album.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Mr Fab:

in one hour, i mean, not now. But just a reminder that we have a new show following this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm StringOFperils:

Never really thought of it, but this DEVO material bears so much similarity to Taking Tiger Mtn and Warm Jets
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Carmichael:

I saw them in '82, and they used the treadmills.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Rich in Washington:

My maybe second rock concert ever was DEVO, and I remember getting into fights in school because I liked DEVO. When standing in line for the show, outside PDX's Paramount, I remember dudes driving by in Camaros and pickups yelling shit at us "DEVO ARE FAGGOTS! GO SEE VAN HALEN!"
  5:03pm novakscene:

I was very flipped by DEVO's video for Whip it! I was probably around 11 and it was one of the most perverse things I'd ever seen. A few years later a tape I got from a fellow boy scout with Devo and B-52s convinced me that I, too, wanted to be perverse and I quit the scouts. The scout leader was an octogenarian fascist anyway.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Rich in Washington:

DEVO were America's mutant Boy Scouts.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Rich in Washington:

I also went to the treadmill tour, Carmichael! Fun times!
  5:05pm novakscene:

For a while, "Devo" was short for any who looked punk or new wave. Like "Yo Devo!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Carmichael:

www.youtube.com...
  5:06pm novakscene:

StringofPeril, I definitely hear that early Eno connection a lot.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, totally. You'd get people yelling DEVO at you if you didn't have that feathered hair helmet hairdo or big flared out jeans.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Rich in Washington:

That was effing amazing, Kitten Sparkles!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm StringOFperils:

Slapped my mammy.
  5:07pm novakscene:

Thanks for sharing that Kitten!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Feldpausch:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Aitch:

Be re-listening to that set. Devo were a gateway drug for budding weirdos. look where it's gotten us.
  5:13pm Debbie Davenport:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Carmichael:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Rich in Washington:

The Fluke of the Universe guy was Norman Rose. He did a ton of voicework in the 70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm StringOFperils:

I feel more intelligent now than when we began and now feel confident and capable enough to go to the drug store.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Rich in Washington:

Who does these spots, Kitten? Is it from KDIL? Do you know who made them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Feldpausch:

Did he just say something about comforting a dying child
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Feldpausch:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Feldpausch:

I've been to Wickenburg. This is "on-brand"
Avatar 5:31pm Kitten Sparkles:

Yes - a lot of KDIL stuff on my shows, usually.
Avatar 5:33pm Kitten Sparkles:

And I generally know who made what.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Rich in Washington:

Aitch@5:13: truer words were never said. I daresay every weird thing I got around to was because of trying to find more weird bands like DEVO.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Rich in Washington:

This sounds like the sounds coming out of my nextdoor neighbor's compound on a Saturday night.
