Hi simply hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm

This John & Mary stuff was heavily parodied by Stan Freberg with his John & Martha series.
BUT ALSO parodied by my father in a series of ads of a local Savings Bank:

Cook records needs a good compilation!

The actual title of the Emory Cook track is the screen-busting: Turntableful of Sound Effects, Announcements, and Horrifying Background Moods for the Making of Seductive Soap Operas

Parmegiani! I hear him a lot via Fabio.

TDK60:

Hello, first time here maybe.
Avatar 3:40pm
Mr Fab:

Hullo, TDK, this is a new show, only a few episodes in.
Avatar 3:41pm
TDK60:

Oh, Mr. Fab. Everything's glittery, shiny new.
Avatar 3:43pm
Mr Fab:

Even I have to remember that we have Saturday programming now - had to dig "Wired Up"in the archives. In which I learned that Heart had a groovy early '70s glam record. Only it wasn't *that* Heart. I was confused for a sec.
Avatar 3:47pm
Domenic:

My family is very amused about what i'm listening too.
Avatar 3:48pm
Mr Fab:

I like to sprinkle some Parmegiani over my spaghetti.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
Rich in Washington:

I was thinking the same thing, Fab.
It's making me want to order an eggplant Parmigiana pizza from my favorite pizza joint.
Avatar 4:02pm
Kitten Sparkles:

On the other side of this album are some recordings of earthquakes, but they arent audible - youre just supposed to watch the tone arm wiggle around!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm
Webhamster Henry:

These howlers are VLF radio signals. You used to be able to detect them by hooking a really long wire up to your computer's joystick port and reading the port.
Avatar 4:08pm
Carmichael:

How long is "really long", Henry? 20 feet?
  4:11pm
Dave in St Albans UK:

I used to own a book that explained Howlers and Whistlers, atmospheric disturbances at VLF. A bit too technical for me at the time. My receiver tuned down to 40 Hz but without a decent long wire I never managed to hear those eerie sounds. Always fascinated by them though.
  4:16pm
Dave in St Albans UK:

I meant 40Khz! Just read this "Frequencies of terrestrial whistlers are 1 kHz to 30 kHz" so that explains why.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm

Hi Kitten and fantastic people!
Avatar 4:21pm
Kitten Sparkles:

Got a LOT of Musique Concret today. Hope nobody minds...
Avatar 4:23pm
Mr Fab:

As it happens, I'm auditioning cartoon sound fx to add to the Sheena stream. THis show not only doesn't interfere, it goes quite nicely with what I'm listening to.
Avatar 4:25pm
Kitten Sparkles:

yay!
Avatar 4:25pm
ARB:

Hi Chresti! Looking forward to our cookie date at the end of next year when it's predicted to be safe to go out in public
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
Webhamster Henry:

@Carmichael it was more like 100+ feet. Radio waves are pretty weak, and the wavelengths are long, so a long wire really helps. I couldn't do it - I was in an apartment. But people with farms could.
Avatar 4:26pm
TDK60:

Well, at least it ain't Music Cement.

It was in 1996. jhhl.net...

Rich in Washington:

I used to work with a bunch of electronics nerds and one of their collective 'government projects' (things you do on company time, w/company material but aren't technically allowed) was building receivers for howlers, whistlers. But when I mentioned doing arty things with the audio, they thought I was weird. Like, 'why the hell would you do THAT?'.
Avatar 4:50pm
TDK60:

Rich in Washington: Was that WFMU & WKCR "war" event taped?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
Webhamster Henry:

@TDK60 It might have been - it was actually produced on the WKCR side. I started it off with a program I wrote that blasted Hanna Barbera sound effects in a kind of random order through a home made audio studio to phone line interface that was designed by Negativland.
Avatar 4:55pm
TDK60:

I meant you, Henry. Thanks.
