Enjoying this already, and looking forward to the next few hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks Lee - yes, a lot to ponder, Richard. Hope you are sitting comfortably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Olivia!
Avatar 6:05pm mce1965:

I've got my Dylan sunglasses on and am shaking my foot with glee for the next three hours!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm cometothesunshine:

Fantastic, MCE

St. Albans market day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Candy-O'67:

Tuning in, Andrew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Candy-O!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm myron feld:

Never heard this version of "Epistle"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm cometothesunshine:

As Graham Nash said in 1967: Donovan's songs could stop wars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm cometothesunshine:

They are very long indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm cometothesunshine:

You know, I could have tripped out easy on this show, but I've changed my ways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm cometothesunshine:

Usually I save the hits for the end of these spotlights, but I wanted you all to be still conscious.
Avatar 6:19pm mce1965:

Good move
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm cometothesunshine:

I am glad Rod doesn't get to sing on this, my favorite kind of Beck group
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm myron feld:

Not a Rod fan, Andrew?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm cometothesunshine:

Not a super fan of Rod, no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm cometothesunshine:

And I wear that well.
Avatar 6:25pm sw2442:

Remember...neither was Ron Nasty...he declared that The Rutles were bigger then Rod...not God...as that slightly deaf reporter wrote...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm cometothesunshine:

Beatnicks are out to make it rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm myron feld:

A little out of time, but I don't mind. Anyway, Donovan is great. I saw him at Madison Square Garden in 1969. He played on a stage covered in white flowers. Of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm cometothesunshine:

That must have been great, Myron
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm cometothesunshine:

I saw him perform at a Tower Records and I was less than a foot from him, it seemed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm cometothesunshine:

Macca attacka
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Candy-O'67:

Wow, that's so cool you were so close to him, Andrew
Avatar 6:29pm johnyoung1234:

...and her returned the favor by writing the line "Sky of blue and sea of green" for 'Yellow Submarine'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm cometothesunshine:

I think this show is my payback for that proximity.
Avatar 6:32pm mce1965:

Hopefully he had a Mellow Smello about him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm dreamyandseedy:

loving these images! and the music of course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, dreamy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Candy-O'67:

Haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm cometothesunshine:

zop zop zop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Candy-O'67:

I think Paul was right there towards the very end of that song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm cometothesunshine:

He's definitely on that record.
  6:40pm MH:

Never heard this demo version! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm cometothesunshine:

Glad you like it - MH - there are some great rarities on this episode
  6:41pm julie:

I love him so much
  6:41pm MH:

Like this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm cometothesunshine:

He is one-of-a-kind, Julie.
  6:42pm MH:

Sammy!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm cometothesunshine:

Yes, lots of surprises.
Avatar 6:43pm sw2442:

Donovan was a great jazz vocalist...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm cometothesunshine:

such gorgeous arrangements.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm cometothesunshine:

And he is rarely mentioned in the field of baroque pop.
  6:47pm Bud&Me:

❤️❤️❤️
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm cometothesunshine:

Hello, Bud & Me - thanks for listening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm cometothesunshine:

Poor Cow - for all fans of depressing cinema
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm cometothesunshine:

Such a sweet melody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm cometothesunshine:

I love the B section.
Avatar 6:51pm Beantown Doug:

Six years ago, by pure chance, I crossed paths with Donovan at Boston's Logan Airport. There he was, unrecognized by everyone except me. In total surprise I called out his name, "Donovan Leitch!" and he extended his hand to me, a total stranger. We shook, and had a truly wonderful exchange. Donovan assured me he was planning a Boston concert appearance, and two years later I was in the front row.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm cometothesunshine:

Wonderful, Doug. Was Donovan still flying Translove Airways?
Avatar 6:53pm Beantown Doug:

HAH! He had just arrived from China.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm cometothesunshine:

Of course he did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Enjoying this a lot. thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, a favorite of mine too SCL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm cometothesunshine:

Pastoral Pop to the max
Avatar 6:55pm sw2442:

I must ask ask...who is the arranger on these songs.. my guess is Mickie Most or Donovan himself...I'm probably wrong though...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm cometothesunshine:

sw2442 - no, neither arranged the records.
Avatar 6:58pm Beantown Doug:

Jenny Boyd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Kim Reynolds:

Enjoying the Sunshine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm cometothesunshine:

Usually I take pains to mention the arrangers, but they seldom gave credit. It is possible John Paul Johns helped on some, but I believe there were many uncredited people who scored these records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Kim!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm cometothesunshine:

Seems kind of the perfect Sunshine show.
  7:00pm MH:

Who was Mad John?
Avatar 7:01pm sw2442:

Yeah...John Paul Jones would be probably bebe it....he did a lotta arranging for many artists and groups he appeared on...
Avatar 7:01pm johnyoung1234:

There is a Facebook group 'Real Autograph Collector's Club' that someone associated with Donovan is aware of. Donovan has a special offer for members this month for any RACC member that buys a signed item from him through his website. He will sign and personalize LPs, CDs, etc. from the site. A friend of mine just received a really nice item directly from him in Ireland from the site. He even signed the customs form!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm cometothesunshine:

sw2442 - John Paul Jones did many sessions with Mickie Most, especially.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm cometothesunshine:

Nice info, JY1234!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm cometothesunshine:

A seagull flies, a tear in my eye...
Avatar 7:04pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Uh, oh, I missed some essential Donovan! Hey Andrew, everyone. Andrew, do you know if there is a good compilation/b**tleg of those BBC tracks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm cometothesunshine:

I would love to hear the demo of this. I saw someone online had found an acetate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm cometothesunshine:

This is a very wild and swinging Los Angeles production.
Avatar 7:05pm johnyoung1234:

Here is the link: donovan.ie...

Make sure to put in that you are a RACC member in the comments when/if you purchase so you get an extra goodie from him. You could also mention my name (John Young). I've been in direct contact with them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm cometothesunshine:

Nothing official, Cha Cha - not sure about boots.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm cometothesunshine:

Meet me under the whale...
Avatar 7:08pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@7:05 cometothesunshine: what a pity! Sometimes the boots can surpass official releases (Syd-era Floyd BBC stuff comes to mind here) but would be nicer to give the artist some financial reward as well, no matter how little it is nowadays.
Avatar 7:08pm Beantown Doug:

"Celeste" is one of my all-time favorites. It's a major "comfort zone" track for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm cometothesunshine:

Well, there should be an official Donovan set - I would be happy to work on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm PaulRobeson1920:

Warm greetings Ya’ll! Wow a program of scintillating 1960's sounds... right up my ally! Haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm cometothesunshine:

Celeste is coming up, a favorite of mine too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm cometothesunshine:

Welcome, PR1920
Avatar 7:10pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

Loving the show Andrew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks, GGGG!
Avatar 7:11pm sw2442:

I agree Andrew...I would buy an official Donovan BBC set...especially if you produce, compile, master, and write liner notes for it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm cometothesunshine:

Some groovy girls in this set, especially.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm myron feld:

I first heard "Picking Up The Sunshine" on that Gathered By Coincidence set you just posted. Such a great song AND collection!
Avatar 7:12pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

Love Beverly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm myron feld:

*FROM Coincidence", sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm cometothesunshine:

Me too - did you get her LP, GGGG?
Avatar 7:14pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

Yes, I finally did!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm cometothesunshine:

I was really happy to get my copy - it was a UK record store day thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm cometothesunshine:

There is an RSD 45 too, found on my last trip to San Diego (when I stayed with you).
Avatar 7:14pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

Now my fave Donovan track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm myron feld:

Is the Mike Minor who co-produced "You Just Gotta Know My Mind" the same Mike Minor from Petticoat Junction?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm cometothesunshine:

Hmm...maybe Myron
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm PaulRobeson1920:

Hahaha what a show!
Avatar 7:21pm sw2442:

Yah...my second favorite Donovan song...I kinda wish it was longer...
Avatar 7:21pm Beantown Doug:

There's a super promotional film for "Oh Gosh"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm cometothesunshine:

Oh Gosh!
Avatar 7:21pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I guess this is my favourite Donovan album, although I am not exactly a record collector, I simply had to have it both in stereo and in mono (same as Hurdy Gurdy man)
Avatar 7:23pm sw2442:

I've gotta look for that Oh Gosh promo on YT...thanks...
  7:23pm MH:

Though a bit battered, I still have the original box set with all the colourful kid's lyrics sheets
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm cometothesunshine:

It is quite a Gift!
  7:24pm MH:

if you're a garden!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm cometothesunshine:

I am guessing we are the garden (and Donovan is the flower).
Avatar 7:25pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@7:23 MH: mine's rather worn as well, but everything there, actually the inserts are in really good condition. Only regarding the stereo one though - the mono I have is simply the 2 records with no box...
  7:26pm MH:

Yes, "people and flowers are one in the same."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm cometothesunshine:

Indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm cometothesunshine:

He is very underrated as a songwriter, considering the volume of fantastic melodies he composed.
Avatar 7:31pm johnyoung1234:

Lemons!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm cometothesunshine:

When life gives you Lemons
  7:32pm MH:

I remember the tv commercials with Donovan's music...
Avatar 7:32pm johnyoung1234:

Wear your love like lemons...
Avatar 7:34pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Yes he is very underrated as a songwriter, but he seems to have been very underrated as a serious artist in general back in the 60s. He was dismissed - at least to an extent - as a Dylan for teenyboppers; that definition is pretty far from his actual work.
Avatar 7:34pm Beantown Doug:

For me, when things aren't going well, and life gets especially tough, there is "Celeste."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm PaulRobeson1920:

Underrated is one way to view it : ) ... I would argue the culture had been repressed by Nixon era Public Policy's.... Brilliant music wow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm PaulRobeson1920:

Policy* Haha o my...Full disclosure, I studied 20th century American History... a quality SUNY education baby!
  7:39pm MH:

Kate Bush does a nice version of this
Avatar 7:39pm sw2442:

Lord of the Reedy River is another favorite...I'm guessing on Mary Hopkin's version on Postcard, Donovan and maybe Paul are also on it...do you know Andrew?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm cometothesunshine:

Donovan appears briefly in the film If It's Tuesday...performing this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm cometothesunshine:

sw2442 - that would make sense, given the bootleg of Donovan and McCartney from that period.
Avatar 7:50pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

We used to hear this on the radio a bit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm cometothesunshine:

I bet!
Avatar 7:51pm Beantown Doug:

Was Randy Newman working with Waronker by this time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm cometothesunshine:

yes, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm cometothesunshine:

they were friends from childhood
Avatar 7:53pm Beantown Doug:

I didn't know that! Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm cometothesunshine:

Sure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm PaulRobeson1920:

This is wonderful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm cometothesunshine:

yes, some great undiscovered tracks
Avatar 7:54pm Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

I think attitudes have changed about Donovan, a whole new generation is diggin’ him now.
Avatar 7:54pm Beantown Doug:

I'm just a fan, not an insider. I love the insights.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm cometothesunshine:

I didn't know he wasn't cool. I just think his super sincerity was easy to make fun of.
  7:55pm MH:

What a wonderful show so far Andrew! I'm sure something from Open Road is coming up...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm cometothesunshine:

Thanks!
  7:57pm uptown jen:

What a cool version of “There is a Mountain”!
  7:58pm MH:

Donovan liked to drop in a lot of names in his songs. Juanita...
  7:58pm MH:

Pamela Jo...
Avatar 7:59pm Beantown Doug:

Having met Donovan briefly, in an impromptu way, I can confirm his absolute sincerity. The eternal Hippie, he was insistent on wanting to know everything he could find out about me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm cometothesunshine:

I tried to use the live versions if they rivaled or bettered the released recordings.
Avatar 8:00pm Mailman Tom:

I first heard Donovan's music in 1966. Been a fan ever since!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm cometothesunshine:

Hopefully we've made him a few extra fans today.
Avatar 8:01pm Olivia Greene:

Donovan really has the chops - that's especially apparent to me on the live transcriptions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm cometothesunshine:

he's a very natural performer
Avatar 8:03pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@8:00 cometothesunshine: probably, and you have offered some ear candy for old fans - gotta check the first hour from the archives.
This natural and super sincere quality is what makes his music beautiful and timeless.

BBC Folk makes sense, considering the source for American Folk came from the British Isles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm PaulRobeson1920:

Donovan 19 years old in that interview! Same as the average age of the American Solider in Vietnam. 19 years old
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm PaulRobeson1920:

WWII average age was 26. For reference
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm cometothesunshine:

Buffy St Marie had it right.

My favorite Donovan song ever...like Oh Gosh, I wish Lalena was longer...still a special song.
Avatar 8:38pm Beantown Doug:

Agree about Lalena.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm cometothesunshine:

This version is an incredible one. There are three surviving BBC versions.

loving the BBC recordings!
Avatar 8:41pm johnyoung1234:
