Stanley, our daughter just called to say that she was listening to W 'n B.
  9:10am Irene:

It’s tough dealing with an aging pet. My 18 year old kitty Nica gets disoriented an yowls until I come into the room and call her name. Then she settles down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

@mauri
I am headed out the very middle of the sea. (I'll have you home in time for tea.)
Swag For Life Member 9:12am mauri:

Sounds like an adventure. lets go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

At 2:30 this morning I was sitting with our pup out in the backyard in the dirt under the Japanese maple. For some reason, the dog is comforted there. Luckily, she also finds our guest room to be a sort of safe room. If we can get her to follow us in there, she often settles right down. It's the strangest thing.
Avatar 9:15am Really Lisa:

Hello Doug and all.
Listening as I work. Lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Stanley:

Hi Brian - that's great a convert in the family. Alice, I presume?
  9:16am bigplanetnoise:

Goood morning, Really Lisa! Love the new pic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

So glad you're here, Really Lisa!
Avatar 9:18am Brian in UK:

Stanley, yes, she can spot a Jim White song at twenty paces.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Phillippe Bastille:

When our lab was reaching the end of his life, we learned that dogs can get sundowner syndrome. He would be mostly fine during the day but up most of the night, wandering and barking aimlessly. Led to some family strife, actually, because we were somewhat divided on when the right time to put him down would be (he had bladder cancer as well, and walked around the house like a dripping faucet)
Avatar 9:19am Sem:

Hello, Doug, and the far-flung Drummer Some audience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, near-flung Sem!
Avatar 9:20am Really Lisa:

Hi bpn :) You mean my marathon pic on that social media thingy? Thanks! It's how I look before I realize I still have 20 more miles till the finish line :)
Avatar 9:23am Brian in UK:

Anyone for a piece of lemon drizzle?

One day our cat cannot get enough food in him, the next nothing will satisfy him.
  9:27am Irene:

Oh dear, Brian! A couple of years ago when our 19 year old Gracie was in her final months we uses puppy pads all over the place. She’d forgotten what a litterbox was for.
Avatar 9:29am Brian in UK:

I had a wet nose in my ear at four o'clock this morning wanting food. Enough said!!

Wow, this is cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Doug Schulkind:

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Who, do. (Under the Hoodoo Keith Moon.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Doug Schulkind:

Aaron Harris was a big-time gambler, gangster in New Orleans. Jelly Roll Morton tells several other rich and salty stories about him in this series of conversations for the Library of Congress.
  9:36am Listener Gregory:

Jelly Roll would have been the best party guest ever, especially if you owned a piano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Doug Schulkind:

One prominent aspect of hoodoo was the casting of LOVE spells. It wasn't just about causing harm to one's adversaries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

"Gonna have you wriggling about, just like river trout."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

I stayed in a village in Senegal, where the hoodoo was bad juju.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am doctorjazz:

I Put a Spell on You all...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

Cultural anthropologists like the venerable Zora Neale Hurston, who studied Hoodoo, say the word and concept "mojo" derives from "juju."
  10:04am Listener Gregory:

This Johnny Shines song is chilling.

Just read that book review, Doug. Ai yi yi!! My main contact with Crouch's writing was his early, obnoxious liner notes for the first Wynton Marsalis albums. It's difficult to offend people in liner notes, I think, but he did manage it.

Just inserted it. We're all juggling a new playlist system and I goofed that up. (Thanks for noticing!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

Happy you're along for the ride, ken krimstein!

Playing the Afghan one-string instrument the rabab on this cut is Alice Coltrane's brother, Ernie Farrow.

Hi.
My car just got hoodoo'd. It's old, and now leaky. Just got the mechanic's estimate & rying to calculate whether the cost of repair is worth it or not. Yusef helping.

@Jeff Golick
We all end up old and leaky (if we're iucky). Yusef will help all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Jeff Golick:

This is such an unexpectedly strange and wonderful album, Iron Men. Is Muhal on this? It's his bday tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

Very much Muhal on this.
Avatar 11:02am StringOFperils:

This is great! Quite a band.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

Here is the lineup:

Woody Shaw (trumpet, flugelhorn), Anthony Braxton (clarinet, alto sax, soprano sax), Arthur Blythe (alto sax), Muhal Richard Abrams (piano), Cecil McBee (bass), Joe Chambers (drums(, Victor Lewis (drums)
  11:13am Listener Gregory:

An epistle is a letter. Do you think this is a substitution for "apostles"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Jeff Golick:

Interesting, @LG. There are Christian connections to epistles. And I recall from my recent class on SA jazz that the music of the Anglican church, brought to SA via the UK, played a part in the development of the sound there. (I'm sure Mr. Matsuli can say much more about this!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Stanley:

Ah, the African set (smiles)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

Forever after known as the "smiles set."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Stanley:

I'll take a guess - Kenya?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Stanley:

No wait, just seen a French band name. Cancel that reckless guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
The Jazz Epistles one and only record was called "Epistle–Verse 1"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

Go go go with Congo, Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Stanley:

Crossover between Kenya and Congo sound is sometimes confusing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Stanley:

But it good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

During various periods of conflict, many Zairean stars got the hell out and set up shop in Nairobi.
  11:25am Listener Gregory:

The letters of early church leaders are included as Epistles in the New Testament, @Jeff, so that is definitely a possible connection. However, I would think that "epistle" would be a name for a song or album rather than the group itself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Bavon Marie Marie died in a car accident just months after that was recorded.
Avatar 11:34am ken krimstein:

...beautiful eh ya ele

There are groups called The Something-something Gospels, so it kinda makes sense for there to be a Something-something Epistles, too.

Maybe the song is about a Barbie doll.
