Thank you Andrew...hope your Labor Day is going well...OP had a great show today...can't wait for more Gary and the Playboys...
Avatar 6:03pm
cometothesunshine:

Bit of a late 60s Beach Boys flavor to this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm
Becky Ebenkamp:

I was in OP's chatroom. I hope to hear Jill.

welcome Becky and SW!

Thanks to you and Orange for doing this Lewis marathon. Having a ball with it. Happy Labor Day to YOU, Andrew.

At least Gary is not the Jerry's kid that got painted over in the Keane painting.
Avatar 6:05pm

Thanks, Bill S.

Yes! I need a LD Telethon! They screwed me out of L'Chaim as well.
Avatar 6:05pm

Becky, Gary and the kids had some rough times.
  6:06pm
Dennis:

So what’s the story on the two different versions of this song?
Avatar 6:07pm
sw2442:

I love Tommy Tedesco's acoustic guitar playing on this...
Avatar 6:08pm
cometothesunshine:

Dennis, the other version is apparently an earlier take - only on the stereo versions of his LPs.
  6:10pm
uptown jen:

Yay! My favorite!
  6:13pm
uptown jen:

This song is pure joy.
  6:13pm
Dennis:

I had it on a hits collection - the first GL album I bought
Avatar 6:14pm
cometothesunshine:

Yes, it was on most stereo comps.
Avatar 6:20pm
Nutley Sam:

@Dennis @cometothesunshine I prefer the other version, mostly because I dislike the trombones.
Avatar 6:21pm
cometothesunshine:

Well, it is over now - so the Trombones are out of the way for now.
Avatar 6:21pm
Nutley Sam:

My friend and I used to get into heated arguments about which version. I'm still a bit worked up about it!
Avatar 6:22pm
cometothesunshine:

These things happen when important issues are discussed.
Avatar 6:22pm
Bill S.:

So many little-known gems here today. A wonderful version of Pretty Thing (a fave song of mine) that I've never heard before.
Avatar 6:23pm
cometothesunshine:

Thanks, Bill S. Yes there are a few good versions of "Pretty Thing."
Avatar 6:24pm
Nutley Sam:

Speaking of important, the 2-beat-triplet figure that appears in many GL songs and also the Snuff-produced "Take Good Care Of My Baby" is what I've always called a "Garrett"
Avatar 6:24pm
sw2442:

I have to agree with Bill S....Pretty Thing was great...I had never heard it before today...
Avatar 6:25pm

sw2442 - I have a whole Paul Leka show that is worth checking out in the archive.

"Jill" is one of the best. Gary had an underrated falsetto. Thanks for the great show. Usually I only dream about an all Gary Lewis show. I'm awake, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm
Becky Ebenkamp:

Hi Richard!
Avatar 6:28pm
sw2442:

Jill is totally amazing song...I didn't hear this song for the first time until 2008!!!...I kept listening to it over and over again...great Billboard ad for it too...
Avatar 6:28pm
cometothesunshine:

Becky! I missed it - my power cut out. Will have to dig into the archives for that one. Everyone should check out Becky's Bubblegum OD show here on Sundays. Also, Richard hosts the Whig Out also here on Sundays.
Avatar 6:30pm

Nutley Sam - it is all real, except the trombones.

Doesn't sound like Gary. No doubled voice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
Becky Ebenkamp:

Last one, I mean. And that organ.
Avatar 6:37pm

Snuff lost interest in making perfect records - less doubled voice, Becky.

Jill is so great! I learned it from a DJ at this anarchist station I worked at briefly. This big gruff teddy bear of a DJ who thot my show was ridiculous loved it. He asked for it and sang along and liked and "got" my show after that.
Avatar 6:40pm
