Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm fred:

Hello Dave and free ones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Dave Sewelson:

Welcome fred!
  2:47pm Liftoff Music:

This should be a weekly show, great playlist. YK did influence the movement. NYC/brooklyn/queens artists continue to create music in this genre: listen to IndofunkSatish, SnehasishMozumder, Mission:on Mars, and BrooklynRagaMassive !✔️
Avatar 2:48pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Dave: Works OK on iPad?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Dave Sewelson:

Yep...does it appear okay?
Avatar 2:48pm indofunk:

Hey Vin!!
Avatar 2:49pm indofunk:

Yeah, shout out to Brooklyn Raga Massive for continuing the tradition!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm doctorjazz:

Hello Free World Denizens!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm fred:

Nitin Sawhney has done some music for dance. Great with Akram Khan for Kaash, not so great for Vertical Road, and a huge disappointment with Honji Wang and Sebastien Ramirez. Not sure how much I should praise or blame him in each case though
Avatar 2:51pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Dave If it appears OK to you, then it's OK!
  2:52pm Liftoff Music:

Respect to wfmu & Indofunk for sharing this music. The raga
renaissance is here✔️
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm fred:

ADF... I saw them a few times many years ago. Memorable shows.
Sigh... live music...
Avatar 2:53pm indofunk:

Damn! I wish I'd seen ADF!!
  2:54pm E.J.:

ADF, wow!! Thanks Dave!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Dave Sewelson:

Yeah doc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Dave Sewelson:

  3:03pm Cooper-Moore:

Beautiful trumpet sound.
Avatar 3:03pm indofunk:

Thank you! <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm fred:

@indofunk: These ADF shows were in 2003-2005 maybe. I really loved the dhol solo parts, though now I guess it was gimmicky. Getting old sucks this way. They had Adrian Sherwood opening a couple of times
Avatar 3:11pm indofunk:

If you want to hear some non-gimmicky dhol, listen to Red Baraat with my boy Sunny Jain!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm fred:

Talvin Singh, wow. Takes me even further back. I first saw him something like 20 years ago, he did a classical tabla duo open before switching to his more electronic stuff
  3:13pm Liftoff Music:

Takin' us back on a journey! underground d&b/global music movement in nyc influenced by all these artists in 90's
Avatar 3:14pm Sem:

Glued to today's show from the first note. Thank for this, Dave and Indofunk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Dave Sewelson:

Yeah Liftoff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Dave Sewelson:

Yeah Sem!
  3:15pm Irene:

Love these musical choices today! Lots of beautiful stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm fred:

I once saw an amazing performance of Indian percursion with water bowls. Jaltaran? Tuning was moving water from a bowl to another
Avatar 3:19pm indofunk:

Jaltarang indeed :)
  3:19pm Liftoff Music:

Yes to Dave, Sem and Fred. This should be a weekly show, there's new-music like this too out there! @Snehasish @BklynRagaMassive @MissionOnMars @IndofunkSatish
  3:23pm Irene:

I agree Liftoff! There’s a deep well of this beautiful music that should be drawn from on a weekly show.
Avatar 3:27pm indofunk:

Dave's show is a weekly show! He plays all sorts of different stuff :)
  3:28pm Cooper-Moore:

YEAH!
Avatar 3:28pm indofunk:

But Vin, that's a great idea to play the modern stuff that's been influenced by these artists! Maybe an idea for another guest spot....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm fred:

@Liftoff Music: Did Brooklyn Raga Massive do a great version of Terry Riley's In C a few years ago? I might be confused though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Dave, Indofunk Satish & Free worldlings
  3:40pm Liftoff Music:

Yes Fred. BklynRagaMassive "In C" Live (NorthernSpyRecords). https://northernspyrecs.com/

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Dave Sewelson:

  3:54pm Liftoff Music:

Shout out to Sunny & Red Baraat crew, dhol/drummer led band in nyc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm fred:

Is dhol featured in that track? I only know the Asha Bhosle version
Avatar 3:55pm indofunk:

Thanks for the recco, Vin! That song was a last-minute addition based on your comment ;)
Avatar 3:56pm indofunk:

@fred, yup, that's the non-gimmicky dhol I mentioned ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Gina Bacon:

Hey, Happy Saturday, Dave, indofunk, and streamers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Dave Sewelson:

Gina is in the house...

Bandcamp link for the BRM In C.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm fred:

I feel bad about calling the ADF dhol solo "gimmicky". The guy was jumping around and getting everybody fired up. It was appropriate to a show like that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm chresti:

We saw Transglobal Underground at a free concert in Santa Monica a few years ago. They were great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm WR:

Yes, my first intro to the firebird trumpet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm fred:

And ADF and Talvin Singh did get me interested in Indian music (though I'm still baffled by the rhythms)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm chresti:

Some of this music might be considered trip hop.

Thanks Dave and indofunk. I miss Indian dance, especially the contemporary kind like Padmini Chettur. I can't blame covid for her no longer coming here, the fan base is in the 2 digits range
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Dave Sewelson:

Thanks all you listeners!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Gina Bacon:
