Gary, this weekend we're at the mom-in-laws in Michigan but I've been enjoying the show from Brighton Beach every Sunday morning. While my better half Katie swims a couple of miles I lie there in a semi-vegetative state and soak up the music!
Avatar 10:05am TDK60:

it's the flip side, mon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Gary:

Sweet, I was just in Brighton Beach yesterday, stopped in at RBC Video to pick up some Russian CDs
  10:09am agav:

semi vegetative is the best state to reside in

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Gary:

It's worth a trip, Hyde -- Cafe at Your Mother In Laws has a couple of tables out on the sidewalk, and they've got great Uzbeki/Korean chow
Avatar 10:17am hyde:

@Gary ooh, that sounds good. i did apparently bookmark some Uyghur place called Café Kashkar
  10:17am Woo:

Solid.
Avatar 10:19am hyde:

oh and some other Korean/Russian place called Elza Fancy Food
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Gary:

They also have tables out ... Hey there, Woo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Rob W:

Ah yes Gary, sometimes I pop into RBC Video when Katie's swimming! And yes Hyde, and Gary, we frequent the food spots too! Although haven't been to Mother-in-Laws - need to try that one - thanks for the tip! Sietsema was a catalyst - he wrote about Kashkar Cafe many years ago. We also like the Georgian bakeries and the dark Lithuanian bread that many groceries stock, etc. etc...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Gary:

Seconding all the bakeries and grocery stores there -- lots of unique imports
  10:26am Marie:

Good morning, Gary, and everybody. Totally digging the show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Gary:

Morning, Marie!

"Who killed the barber"!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Rob W:

Our former-Soviet food conversation may seem a bit off-topic - but I can think of one band you'll hear on Solid Foundation whose band name - or at least, the inspiration for that name - brings the musical and geographic threads together! (And that's our Solid Foundation Jamaican music quiz for today kids...)
Avatar 10:32am mb:

hbd Bunny Lee!! Total BOSS

Shoutouts to Jeff Sarge!!
Avatar 10:33am TDK60:

Once long ago, I had very long hair, decided to get a short haircut. The barber complained to me about my long hair, "You look like a girl," as he cut. I said "You're getting to cut it off and I pay you, so?!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am adampsyche:

whoooooaaa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Gary:

Haha, well, I can't think of the band name off the top of my head, Rob, but the last track I'll play today is decidedly on (Soviet) topic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Rob W:

Perfect Gary! By the way, last thing - but I should have said "musical and *culinary* threads, that's more accurate... and, the answer rhymes with anthracite(s)!
Avatar 10:39am mb:

HEAVY MANNERS

Really trying to get out of the house for a short walk. Thanks DJ Gary : )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Gary:

MB, if I have done my homework *correctly* they do, yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Gary:

Mostly as producer
Avatar 10:48am mb:

Thanks. This show is top notch today (as always). Will miss these classic roots and rock when Mr. Sarge comes back, can't lie.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Gary:

MB, check out Mike Sin's Ranking Full Stop on the Rock & Soul stream, right after this show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Rob W:

Yep, Skatalites Gary! But you know maybe that wasn't totally fair because though Sputnik was first, the US was also launching satellites at that time. But according to this at least - old.skabook.com... - those early satellite launches were the inspiration for the name. And yes I second that, if you like today's show you may get a kick out of Mike Sin's Ranking Full Stop on FMU's Rock & Soul stream too dear listeners!
Avatar 10:53am hyde:
