[belated] caps-lock salute for VIOLET.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Scott Williams:

Y'all, in re Rev ^^, he and Violet (Jeff Surak) shared a live performance right here on the show a buncha years back (May 23 2011, it's in the archives!)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm tim from champaign (now washington):

This is really captivating. Sounds very contemporary even though it's from 1967.
Avatar 🎸 3:21pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

A grand day it was, SW.
Also: that Demarczyk piece was stunning.
Also-also: th'Düül!
Avatar 3:22pm Sandy:

oooo time for Scott Williams. what luck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm McGroovey:

Man. Ewa Demarczyk was really getting into that landscape.

Did anyone write down the recipe? I didn't have a pen handy.

Or ...a pen, Handy (if Handy is here)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:22pm tim from champaign (now washington):

According to the internet machine Ewa Demarczyk is known as "The Dark Angel".
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Handy Haversack:

I remember Hitler was a vegetarian, McGroovey, but I didn't write it down. It seemed more pointed than my pen!
  3:26pm Mikey_B:

miss imaginary radio
Avatar 3:26pm Chud:

@Mikey_B, same here! What's Chris M up to these days?
  3:26pm Cubicle Carl:

Nice transition
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:27pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Wait a minute - what late 90s/early aughts band sampled this guitar?
Avatar 3:27pm Chud:

@Tim, AIR, I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thanx to the Boffins or Fates or whomever responsible for the stream flowing strong today again.
  3:27pm Rich from Red Hook:

OMG, I thought for a second Chris M from Imaginary Radio was back. This was his theme song.
  3:28pm ami ad:

Hello DJ. Hello all.
Avatar 🎸 3:28pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Thanks Rich, I couldn't place it, who had that loop of the opening as bed music...
Avatar 3:28pm Chud:

That sweet, sweet deadpan humor of his was amazing
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:28pm steveo:

BEEFHEART!!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:28pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Chud - I think you're right!
Avatar 3:28pm Jeff Moore:

I was trying to remember who used that riff as bed music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm melinda:

@Rich, thanks, I knew I'd heard it as bed music somewhere and it gave me a warm fuzzy feeling.
  3:28pm Layet Johnson:

Same here, Rich!! Thursday’s back in 2015 were always good times thanks to his show.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:29pm VincentNifigance:

Hell of a segue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Imaginary Radio Great Program indeed.
This station thing damn.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Last we heard, he was off to Guam to grow trees, as I recall.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:30pm steveo:

also miss chris
  3:30pm sufferwords:

not Warren Z hmmmm
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:31pm TomDash:

wow - I NEVER listen to this Beefheart - sweet and surprising. This was the first I bought used on vainly (and easiest one to find) back in the 80s. I was expecting the 60s sound, I was disappointed as a judgmental budding music head - my bad...nice tune indeed!
  3:31pm Rich from Red Hook:

Scott love your show and hearing Sonic Boom a few weeks back. I used to hang out with him when he came to NYC. Emailed him and he sent me the nicest response.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm VincentNifigance:

@TomDash those two Tragic Band records have a couple of gems.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:33pm TomDash:

@VincentNifigance - I wrongly wrote them off...was expecting Safe As Milk to Lick Your Decals, and it was nice and cheap - time to revisit!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:38pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Starlight Furniture Co. - was that a weirdo SF/ Bananafish mag label?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:40pm tim from champaign (now washington):

I called it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm mariano:

Hey Scott and all!
  3:42pm bLeubomberune b:

Avatar 3:49pm Hubig Pie:

Banjo pawned to make the rent
Avatar 🎸 3:50pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

This Lonesome Banjo is clearly a spiritual cousin to EUSTIS THE USELESS RABBIT; a dusty old 7" found at a thrift store decades ago. Same vibe somehow. Maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Rabbits are not interested in some fascist utilitarian system of values mahhhhnn.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:53pm brainiac:

The lyrics to Lonesome Banjo are a hidden paean to Marxism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...we hop in Solidarity with our Banjo brothers...
Avatar 3:55pm TDK60:

That World Standard was pretty; banjo isn't always.
Avatar 🎸 3:55pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

to be fair, Eustis the Useless Rabbit was a total plagiarism of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. A tale of redemption, still...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Andrew_in_WI:

I chune my banjo to drop D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm mariano:

Gotta say, I've always been a sucker for that "Summer Breeze" guitar riff.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm steveo:

I once had a surgery to have all the jasmine removed from my mind; full recovery, so that was a relief
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm muckgeist:

Banjo for me will always remind me of Paul Metzger. Banjo raga fantastical exploration of ear ear earballs.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm brainiac:

drop D = Heavy Metal Banjo.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Andrew_in_WI:

@muckgeist I saw Metzger about a decade ago out in Maine. All his records are worth a listen.
  3:58pm Tamar:

Oh my goodness, the first time I have ever liked this song. Go Isley Brothers!
Avatar 🎸 3:58pm Bas NL:

Wow. Good song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm xtrakrispy:

Fuck me. THis rocks.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:59pm steveo:

is this the disco dave sample?
Avatar 🎸 4:00pm Bas NL:

Love the demure drum set.
  4:00pm berbo:

why isn't the entire Isley Brothers catalog on permanent rotation everywhere?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Isleys early employers of Hendrix anybody didn't know. One of the better ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm McGroovey:

Summer Breeze: man, this song makes memories come flooding back. Wikipedia says the Seals & Crofts hit version came out on August 31, 1972, so I'd just turned 9. It was all over top-40 radio for the following months.

Top 40 radio could be so maudlin in the seventies.

Funny that it came out at the end of the summer.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:02pm muckgeist:

@A_in_W - Verily. Love that guy.
An late-80s band of his is worth looking into if you haven't, TVBC. From before Metzger got bored with the rock thing.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Jason from Houston:

〜〜(ノ・ェ・)ノ〜〜
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Andrew_in_WI:

@muck I will check out TVBC. Thanks
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:04pm steveo:

Hmm, Who's that Lady by the Isleys listed as a sample on A Year and a Day -- similar groove, I guess
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm joe mulligan:

@McGroovey very true about the 70s top 40. I have yet to put together a compliation of top 40 tunes from 1976 when I went in the back of a pontiac grand safari with the family from DE to disneyworld
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm McGroovey:

I have a banjo someone gave me. I've never learned to play it. It's in some kind o' D-tuning. Maybe if I tuned it like a uke or a bass, I could do something with it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Handy Haversack:

Sounding great top to bottom, Scott! Gotta make a pet-food run but we'll be back before the end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Andrew Waterloo:

First time listener here. Nice program you got!
  4:29pm JoStrummer:

In one of the earlier Ewa Demarcyck tracks I was reminded a bit of Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm mariano:

You sound like you're in a glass case.
Avatar 4:30pm TDK60:

This sounds better, the 3rd 'this'..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm mariano:

Speaking of Seals & Crofts, do y'all know how they committed career suicide? I just found this out a few years ago: at the height of their popularity, they released an anti-abortion concept album called "Unborn Child." One of the WTFs of music history.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Ike:

I know I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to stick the mic up your nose, Scott.
Avatar 4:33pm TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Scott Williams:

Avatar 5:05pm TDK60:

Handy thanks for relaying Kate's huzzahs to the disc jockey. It warms some of the listeners too. Or should I say, in this season, cools?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm McGroovey:

Prolapse! The best band with the worst name!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Michael 98145:

( that IS a pretty terrible name )
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Handy Haversack:

I feel confident that I can pass along shoutouts from the entire household to you, too, TDK60!

I am appreciative that the weather was not actively death-encouraging in NYC this day.

McGroovey, they had to change their name from Amateurlapse once they lost their eligibility.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

We are not pro this lapse in names. Yet - we are pro Prolapse ...the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm McGroovey:

@Handy hah!

I was about to type that I want to start a Prolapse cover band, and call it Lapse.

But Amateurlapse is better.
  5:11pm ami ad:

@Scott:What's going on,are you seeking answers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm McGroovey:

But actually, "Lapse" is a good name for something.

An Absence of Reindeer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm coelacanth∅:

mariano @4.32 that album somehow ended up in my possession at the time. i stopped paying attention to them.
but then sexpistols and Graham Parker also did (somewhat more subtle) anti-abortion songs that knocked them both down some notches on my respect list. (not that the 'pistols had that much respect from me, but Parker sure did)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm McGroovey:

Hey, who's mangling the Nazz? Blasphemy;

Loving the show Scott.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well that's a nifty drummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm McGroovey:

Fun fact: after Todd quit the Nazz, they basically evolved (eventually) into Cheap Trick
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Krys O.:

That was Stewkey.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Krys O.:

Que?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Baja Joe:

Really really really liked the Prolapse tune. I was tapping me foot the whole time, whilst napping!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Krys O.:

Cheap Trick?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm McGroovey:

I have a Nazz bootleg that has a couple Rick Nielson songs in it. I think the story is that two of the Nazz guys tried to go out as the Nazz with Rick on guitar. That didn't fly. Then Rick started another band (Fuse?) That included one (?) of the Nazz guys, and that eventually became Cheap Trick
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:26pm brainiac:

@McGroovey: Well... sorta. Todd basically joined every band he produced. So back in '82 he was part of Cheap Trick.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Krys O.:

Oh

Well, the '82 Cheap Trick thing was 10+ years later. Todd and Rick were already connected.

I got 86'ed from a bar in Brooklyn once for playing Cheap Trick's The Flame on accident. The bartender was giving me and my buddy dollars to play the jukebox. I wasn't seeing straight when I picked Cheap Trick's The Flame. I meant to play Surrender. When the Flame came on the bartender took our beers, poured them out and said we were done. I can't really blame him.

@Tim: wow, that was harsh!

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:47pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@brainiac - I deserved it. It happened more than 20 years ago but I still remember thinking "Oh boy, I fucked up"

first time ever in the "locals" dive in santa cruz i decided to feed the monster, saw Jimi Hendrix and played "fire". only thing is it was a tribute album with a horrible bowed-string version. the second it started everyone started yelling! "Who played this?!" thought i was gonna get my ass kicked!
