Hoover...oh nice!
Avatar 10:15pm northguineahills:

Hooverphonic should cover Hoover quoting Herbert Hoover while sampling a Hoover. Hoover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm Mr. Pumpy:

Jeff, did you grab one of those Chris Forsyth / Dave Harrington First Flight albums? I'm, looking forward to that slab o wax.
  10:17pm Kell Mercer:

This is great!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Mr. Pumpy:

mariano! Just caught you at the end of Therese's show. Life has been hectic. Especially when collaborating on all things Jutt Life...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Mr. Pumpy:

I';m loving the vocal cadence on this Forest piece. It makes me think both Billy Bragg and Jeff Mangum are fans, but perhaps not.
Avatar 10:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...think Forest must've lived one town over from Incredible String Band in Hobbiton...
Avatar 10:22pm Jeff Conklin:

I havent gotten the Forsyth LP yet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Pauly from Clifton:

@Mr. Pumpy, I thought I would have so much time to do what I wanted, like Burgess Meredith in that Twilight Zone episode.
  10:25pm Carmichael:

It was 110 here today. I am destroyed by the heat, and I did absolutely nothing.
Avatar 10:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Just too damn good to turn off - but hafta listen horizontal with the lights off...
Avatar 10:26pm Jeff Conklin:

We had our first real break from oppressive heat here today. Came at the cost of rain and clouds though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Pauly from Clifton:

Humid AF in DC, but didn't get into the 80s...so we've got that going for us, here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Pauly...yeah? Why did you think that...and did ya break ya glasses?
Avatar 10:30pm mb:

Howdy peoples. Great to be here on a chill night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Jeff...they are still up on Bandcamp. First bunch on colored wax, if your into that kinda thang. Great set tonight.
  10:30pm Carmichael:

Methinks this is in D. I know that chord progression. Sufficiently Breathless, Give a Little Bit, etc
Avatar 10:31pm Jeff Conklin:

I avoid colored vinyl like novel coronaviruses
  10:31pm Carmichael:

Elliot, I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Pauly from Clifton:

@Mr Pumpy, was in Baltimore over part of the weekend and had to ditch contact lenses because of stupidness. Luckily I had my specs with me. Gave me pause.
  10:33pm Carmichael:

Nice banjo.
  10:36pm Bob O:

@Jeff why you no likee colored vinyl? is it an aesthetic thing?
  10:36pm phat:

Sigh. Tim Buckley rarely doesn't hit the spot.
Avatar 10:37pm Jeff Conklin:

I mentioned it last week, its a pain in the ass to cue tracks on. Hard to spot imperfections when buying second hand, and probably makes people buy it who shouldnt be.
  10:38pm phat:

Weirdo whole-tone solo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Jeff...ha! I here ya. I've had good luck as I go back over all the years vs standard black, but it was touch and go there for a minute. Unfortunately the uptick in vinyl sales have driven quality down once again, regardless of color. Some of my best sounding records are 30-40 years old and can be seen through if held up to a light.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm mariano:

Oh hey Mr. Pumpy and Pauly from Clifton!
Avatar 10:39pm mb:

Yo DJ JC, i saw some pics on the internets of you smiling. Whats up with that? Everything cool?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Carmichael...thanks, I just had it stuffed.
Avatar 10:41pm Jeff Conklin:

It shouldn't affect most of you since you all disappear at 11 but there's gonna be some website maintenance for a few minutes that may log you off/make the playlist unavailable FYI
Avatar 10:41pm Jeff Conklin:

@mb: Must be an imposter unless my kid was close by.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Mr. Pumpy:

All that said, I have received some amazingly pretty colored vinyl recently which has also sounded amazing. Top notch. And, I also think I'm someone who "should" be buying it. Although, I think if someone's got the coin...they qualify as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Mr. Pumpy:

That was some great Tim Buckley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Rory:

Great track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm mariano:

Ohhh, one of my favorite Pentangle songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Mr. Pumpy:

Avatar 10:44pm Jeff Conklin:

Having spent many many years buying and selling records I assure you there are many who should not be buying them,.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm chresti:

Can you mark it with a sharpie, the difficult to see colored vinyl?
  10:46pm Jordan:

Brilliant pairing, have been thinking for a long time that Jansch and Buckley are each other cross-pond counterparts
  10:47pm Jeff Conklin:

No sharpie on vinyl!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Mr. Pumpy:

That's cool. I look at it from another angle is all. Also as a buyer/seller. Just opinions...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Richy4619:

chugga chugga, chugga chugga, choo-chOO!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Mr. Pumpy:

Ah, yes Jeff. Your child was in tow. I got alarmed b/c this was more than a wry grin. Warmed me cockles, tbh.

No worries Pumpy. I’m in the minority

mariano...I was slicing onions. I do that when I hear emotive tunes.
  10:54pm Bob O:

I saw RT in woodbridge, along with Zara Phillips. Was spectacular!
  10:55pm phat:

I saw RT on that history of pop music tour and it was mind-blowing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm mariano:

Oh I see, Jeff: "It's not you, it's me." Like I haven't heard that one before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Mr. Pumpy:

Great mic control!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm mariano:

Ohhh, Jeff, when I read your comment I thought you meant RT as in the Russian propaganda channel.
  10:57pm s:

More bb noises !
  10:57pm Carmichael:

I did not, Jeff, although Mrs. Carmichael certainly did.
  10:57pm Bob O:

Here is a nice review of Saturday's Richard Thompson's (Free Show) @ Woodbridge HS, by the fine website, Brooklyn Vegan: It's got photos, set list and even some videos.

Hey guys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm mariano:

Birthday Blues is a great album.
Avatar 10:59pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The wfmu.org website is going offline for a few minutes, in a few minutes. If you just sit here on the playlist page, you probably won't notice anything except a temporary lack of updates. I'll likely post again right before we go down, and once we're back in business again! Live audio streams should keep functioning...
  10:59pm Andres:

Hello Jeff and all. Something about Tim Buckley that makes me think of everything that I enjoy about this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm mariano:

Birthday Blues has "Poison" and that birthday song for his mother, really sweet/sad minor key piece.
Avatar 11:00pm Jeff Conklin:

Id say Buckley is a very representative artist for this show!
  11:01pm Tom in Los Angeles:

great set tonight Jeff!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Bob O...thanks! I'm stoked that Richard Thompson lives a town away from me now. I can't wait for things to get rolling again.
Avatar 11:06pm Jeff Conklin:

Cheers, Tom!

  11:20pm Carmichael:

Ha! Saw Kottke a few times at The Palms in Davis CA (glorified barn). He’s a character and great performer.
  11:20pm BnowB:

Thanks for the computer work, this site is Amazing! bravo !!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Brian. That is excellent footage. I'm thinking that was 18/fps? At first I thought it was under-cranked, but you couldn't do that, I don't think, with super-8. Also, the speed of the action is proper, just a bit choppy. Very cool. Have you been into film since?
  11:21pm Dean:

The Palms moved from Davis to Winters, where I heard Jimmy LaFave. I learned recently that The Palms has shut down. Very sad.
  11:22pm Carmichael:

And pleasure to meet you, Mr. Tables. Likewise, thanks >a million!
  11:23pm Carmichael:

@Dean, in Winters (the old Opera House)? Oh my.
  11:23pm Eiderdown:

Tuning in from the app. A fantastic soundtrack for a summer evening drive!
  11:24pm Carmichael:

I saw Fairport at the Winters Palms.
  11:24pm Dean:

Yes, I know. Dang.
  11:25pm Carmichael:

And RT at the old Palms about 6 times.

Brian, that's so cool. I love the look of Super 8!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Richy4619:

@Robert Tables, Kenzo, Yes..next round is on me!! I'm in love with this place. Far and away my favorite site online. The functionality, the community, commitment to archiving... Gonna have to check your show out tmrw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm Richy4619:

Someone called this website's design "brutalist". I had to google that to figure out what they meant bc I didn't see the reference architecturally. What do you think about that label?
  11:36pm modern blaze:

i like to glance. there's so much to see
  11:37pm Andres:

I need to hear more of Townes Van Zandt's music. This is gorgeous.
  11:37pm Dean:

People throw around labels like "brutalist" all the time without having the foggiest notion of what it means. Same goes for "postmodern." But where "brutalist" actually points to a stylistic point in time, "postmodern" means precisely nothing and everything.
  11:37pm Carmichael:

I would say “direct” or “accessible “, from a user standpoint. Sometimes IT professionals tend to analyze others’ platforms with a jaundiced eye.
Avatar 11:38pm northguineahills:

@Dean: your definition of postmodern is correct. And I like some literature/art/etc that is postmodern.

difficulty: what about post-pomo?
  11:41pm phat:

Holy cow this Steve Young.
  11:41pm Dean:

I've never understood what anybody means by "postmodern." It seems completely ad hoc to me. There is no postmodern literature or art. (Okay, there is in a narrow sense postmodern architecture, but that has little to do with literature, etc.)
  11:42pm Carmichael:

Maybe we could rename it “pre future”?
  11:44pm Dean:

I would name it "modernist." We are always, and always will be, modernist.
Avatar 11:44pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Richy I don't think "brutalist" means function over form, but, labels are fun
Avatar 11:47pm northguineahills:

For that matter, post-punk?
  11:49pm Dean:

Punk was brief, a year and a half, maybe two. Post-punk refers to the stuff that came later, wasn't punk, and marketers had a hard time stuffing into a category.
  11:49pm phat:

I've never heard anyone say they liked Leo Kottke's singing.
Avatar 11:50pm northguineahills:

@Dean: then we would have to play w/ post-ad hoc labels such as pre-modernist, sort of like historians label the 14th-16th centuries as early modern...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Dean, while I don't disagree, and some people do use these terms flippantly, it is important to realize all things are relative to those who experience and/or deliver them. Is there a ton of misuse, abuse, and malapropism out there (here), of course, but it is important to keep my first point in mind lest we become semanticist the likes of those who refuse to recognize nuance.
Avatar 11:50pm northguineahills:

Thanks, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Mr. Pumpy:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Richy4619:

@Kenzo Yah. Seems like a convenient way for some younger designers to label the direction. I see it as an oversimplification.
  11:52pm Bob O:

cool show! Thanks Jeff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm Mr. Pumpy:

Damnit. it all looks like drivel now! HA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm mariano:

Thank you Jeff and Crew, fellow semanticists and rhetoricians!
Avatar 11:52pm northguineahills:

well, if you're a designer, you can come of w/ arguments of semiotic semantics....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Richy4619:

Yay Thanks Jeff, Sound folx, Web folx and friends...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Petricole:

'Evening Jeff, all; been lurking. I lost a dear one on Friday. The show tonight has been everything I didn't know (/am not surprised) I needed. Thanks and take care, wanderers of the ghetto.
  11:53pm KWilde:

This has been a great show - great year - thanks Jeff
  11:54pm Andres:

Loved the musical artists who weren't at Woodstock origins of tonight's show. I was likely conceived around the same time although a hemisphere away so that is weird to think about. Anyways a beaut of a show, Jeff, thank you!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Mr. Pumpy:

Petricole, sorry. My thoughts go out to you. Nothing heals but time.
  11:54pm Jeff Conklin:
