Avatar 3:59pm Mary Wing:

I can remember being at The Ritz when they still showed music videos before the bands came on, and everyone always stopped dancing to watch the video for this. And I mean everyone; it was weird how we were all mesmerized by the video.

Salut, Fred!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm fred:

3 of a kind-ish? is MIA next?

Avatar 4:12pm northguineahills:

I have to admit, I've never heard a Normal cover....
Avatar 4:12pm Jeff Moore:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Julie:

oooh this is awesome. Suzi Quatro covered this too
Avatar 4:13pm Mary Wing:

She would, wouldn't she? :-)
Avatar 4:13pm Jeff Moore:

@northguineahills: Never heard Grace Jones's cover of this same tune?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm fred:

@Mary: 20 dollar, it's slowed down though (and also references The Pixies)
Avatar 4:14pm northguineahills:

@Julie y Jeff: Nopes, I somehow missed both (and I've seen Suzi Quatro live).
Avatar 4:14pm chresti:

I smell a 3OAK!
Avatar 4:15pm Bas NL:

Yello!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Julie:

@NGH it was in the last few years, I think it's in her box set
Avatar 4:15pm Mary Wing:

Nope, no 3oak today, sorry!
Swag For Life Member 4:15pm spodiodi:

SAVE FERRIS
Avatar 4:15pm Jeff Moore:

@ngh: I recommend looking up the Grace Jones one. It's a cultural icon.

I kind of assume more people are familiar with it than the original.
Avatar 4:15pm northguineahills:

@fred: I know that one....(MIA)

Second time this week I've heard this Yello on WFMU this week!
Avatar 4:16pm northguineahills:

@Jeff: will do sir, after Mary is done!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm fred:

@Sylvia: That's "Can't get blue monday out of my head", right? It's almost exactly 4 minutes long, so I use that track a lot at work
Avatar 4:17pm Jeff Moore:

Oh yeah, don't miss any of THIS show.
Avatar 4:17pm Bas NL:

Yello (Swiss) was big in The Netherlands.. Love their album Stella!

Avatar 4:17pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@spodiodi BUELLER!! (I'm team Cameron)
Avatar 4:17pm northguineahills:

Mary is making working from a hotel room superbly fun and chair dancey....!
Avatar 4:18pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@fred yes! that's the one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Phillippe Bastille:

I'm just imagining Mary on a stage, lights swirling around her, headphones pressed against one ear with her left hand, the right hand manipulating the touch pad on her Macbook Pro, a crowded dance floor at her feet. Which is kind of weird since I have no idea what Mary looks like.
Avatar 4:18pm northguineahills:

Sylvia just made me snot myself.... lultz!
Avatar 4:19pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@northguineahills oops :)
Avatar 4:20pm chresti:

A future 3oak for Warm Leatherette, I mean..
Avatar 4:20pm Jeff Moore:

If Mary wore a giant creepy famous club DJ head like the dead-mouse-head guy or marshmallow-head guy, what kind of head would it be?
Avatar 4:21pm Mary Wing:

Warm Leatherette already had the 3oak treatment back in 2014! wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm fred:

@Jeff: Motör?
Avatar 4:22pm Mary Wing:

Hmm, that's a good question, Jeff. Maybe a turducken head?
Avatar 4:22pm Jeff Moore:

@Mary: ELEVEN OF THEM!
Avatar 4:22pm chresti:

Oooo Chicks on Speed Leatherette.
Avatar 4:22pm Jeff Moore:

(Warm Leatherettes in 2014, not turducken heads)
Avatar 4:23pm TDK60:

Hello.
Avatar 4:23pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

oh my, Paula Abdul <3
Avatar 4:25pm Mary Wing:

Hi TDK60!

Heh, Jeff, 11 turduckens would be way too heavy to carry on my puny neck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Julie:

my fill in will definitely need to be a cool down after all this dancing!
Avatar 4:27pm Sem:

Had almost forgotten about Paula.

Almost.
Avatar 4:27pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@TDK60 Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Oh wow, Power Station! This was ubiquitous back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Phillippe Bastille:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Julie:

damn this bring back memories
Avatar 4:31pm Mary Wing:

Still sounds great, right? That Robert Palmer had some voice.
Avatar 4:36pm northguineahills:

This is one of the rare examples of contemporary pop that is actually infectuous.

I was on the phone and missed Paula Abdul!???!!
Avatar 4:36pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

oh yeah, Milkshake
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm doctorjazz:

Gotta run, thanks, Mary!
Avatar 4:39pm Mary Wing:

Avatar 4:39pm northguineahills:

Wow, it's like grad school came back to me (you couldn't escape a bar w/o hearing this song in NYC in 2003)
  4:39pm Dean:

DJ Cummerbund's mash-up of this tune with Rush is off the charts amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B88TVYzhCPY Hat tip to whoever rec'd it on a comment board long ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Doug Schulkind:

That Kelis number kept making me hear Awkwafina's "My Vag" in my head.
Avatar 4:40pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

N*E¨R*D next?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm fred:

The first time I heard Milkshake I was sure it was a cover of a song from the late '80s
Avatar 4:42pm βrian:

So now I've heard Justin Timberlake.
Avatar 4:43pm Mary Wing:

Hi Dean! Will check that link out later, thanks!
Avatar 4:44pm northguineahills:

Justin Timberlake, I actually like. Not aurally offensive, and quite decent. Mind you, I never buy any of his records or play his music, but it good pop music...
Avatar 4:46pm chresti:

Up until now I've only heard versions of Timberlake's get your freak on by Ergo Phizmiz and a Quantic produced cumbia version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm fred:

I vaguely remember a french version of this (j'aime regarder les filles) from the very early '80s or late '70s. Might have been a cover itself, as most mainstream songs were back then
Avatar 4:47pm Jeff Moore:

...and Milkshake is part of a plot/character point in Jane the Virgin. But you all knew that.
Avatar 4:48pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@chresti the Missy Elliott song?
Avatar 4:49pm northguineahills:

First live concert for me, was the Thriller tour when I was 7 when my father took me. I still have images of the MJ look-alikes there in the stadium. It was awesome...
Avatar 4:50pm chresti:

Have not heard the Missy Elliot song, is 'get ur freak on' her song?
Avatar 4:51pm northguineahills:

si, chresti
Avatar 4:53pm chresti:

Gee whiz, didn't know, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm fred:

Hiya Roberto!

A portable CD player or a stereo component?
Avatar 5:22pm Roberto:

Mary Wing shittin' hits!
Avatar 5:23pm northguineahills:

My friend found a Falco poster in a record in a thrift store, and put it up on his front door. The next day we read he died. He never put another poster on his door again.....
Avatar 5:24pm Bas NL:

Stereo component, but very small! About two CD cases wide and three high! Toshiba. Friend's father was importer for The Netherlands at the time.
Avatar 5:24pm βrian:

Well of course he didn't. He was dead.
Avatar 5:26pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

(@βrian I'm laughing)
  5:29pm Really Lisa:

Thank you, Mary! This has been so much fun!
Hope everyone has a safe, pleasant weekend.
Avatar 5:30pm Mary Wing:

Thanks for hanging out today, Lisa!
Avatar 5:34pm TDK60:

True, fun.
Avatar 5:39pm Sem:

I haven't been disco-ed like this since grade school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm WR:

I acknowledge no knowledge of the 80s except some sordid episodes with PIL.
Avatar 5:43pm Mary Wing:

Hi WR, well, it's time for some schooling, then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm fred:

@WR: I remember playing Four Enclosed Walls at my 18th birthday party, and being promptly kicked out
Avatar 5:45pm Mary Wing:

Kicked out of your own party? That is harsh!
Avatar 5:49pm βrian:

The auto-tune always auto kicks me off. [sad face]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm fred:

Well, I shared the birthday with the actual host, so it was fair. I had it coming too, PiL weren't popular, and neither was I
Avatar 5:51pm Sem:

Thx for doing this, Mary. Lot's of fun. See you and all later.
Avatar 5:52pm Mary Wing:

Cheers, Sem!
Avatar 5:55pm Bas NL:

I once DJ'ed and tried to get people out in the early morning... Playing Einstuerzende Neubauten, followed by Gulio Iglesias... The organizer came over with his box of takings for the night, turned it over on my desk and told me to keep going on.... strange and happy days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Alex In Illinois:

Lene Lovich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm fred:

I got even a couple years later, when I was next given a chance to select a track. I played the first part of Steve Reich's Drumming, and everybody went wild. I still was seen out by the jock squad soon after that stunt, but was allowed to linger outside
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Michael 98145:

Love Lene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Love her voice
Avatar 5:58pm Mary Wing:

Hi there Alex!
Avatar 5:59pm Mary Wing:

Oh my gosh, I think I timed the next track perfectly... fingers crossed that it begins right at the top of the hour.
Avatar 5:59pm Bas NL:

Could we organize a party one day with you at the controls @fred? ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm fred:

@Mary: perfect timing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Michael 98145:

:)
Avatar 6:02pm Mary Wing:

Heh heh heh! You have no idea how long I've wanted to do that on a Friday at 6 pm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm fred:

That could confuse some people about which stream is on
(I love Ladytron)
Avatar 6:03pm chresti:

Thanks Mary!
Avatar 6:03pm Mary Wing:

My aim, exactly. :-)
Avatar 6:04pm Bas NL:

Marc Almond!!
Avatar 6:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ladytron too much like the Shut Up Weirdo robot theme same time on the main stream!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Ike:

Cool cool cool
Avatar 6:06pm Mary Wing:

Hi RevRab, that is the same song! :-)
Avatar 6:06pm Mary Wing:

Hello Ike! Just get here?
Avatar 6:08pm Bas NL:

Oww! Long version! Never heard that before!
Avatar 6:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...uh huh. Well played.
Avatar 6:09pm xtrakrispy:

<<--- this duckie is new to the show. he finally paddled over from the "main" stream. quack!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Alex In Illinois:

What could be more perfect than starting a song called "International Date" line on the hour? I mean, because the International Date line is all about time. You know? It's like where the ultimate top of the hour starts.
Avatar 6:10pm Mary Wing:

Hiya xtrakrispy, welcome to dancey Fridays!
Avatar 6:11pm Mary Wing:

Heh. Alex, I played it right at the top of the hour because the show on the main WFMU stream plays that song at the start of their show. I wanted to confuse people about where they were listening. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm fred:

@Alex: but it's only midnight in the western continental european time zone, not all that international
Avatar 6:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Got me Mary Wing !
That's kewl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Ike:

@Mary@6:06, more or less. I think. Fridays can be a little chaotic here....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Alex In Illinois:

Hmmm. I guess that makes it a Continental date line?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm fred:

@Alex: I guess so, since it's not Analytic anyway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm fred:

Bernie again!!! (OK, not that Bernie)
Avatar 6:30pm Mary Wing:

It's Barney, isn't it? I know his name is Bernard, though.
Avatar 6:31pm xtrakrispy:

<— Duckie just realized I forgot to turn on the subwoofer. QUACK! That’s better!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm fred:

@Mary: yeah, it's Barney, but I went with wishful thinking
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm fred:

Though Bernie Sanders knows a thing or two about putting his hands in the air (though not caring isn't in the package)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Michael 98145:

this has been One Fine Party
Avatar 6:37pm βrian:

We still have a Bernie sign in our front yard.
Avatar 6:38pm Bas NL:

Simple Minds! I love this track!
  6:40pm rw:

Mary! Catching the last bit here. Thank you for hosting! Bopping around in the kitchen.
Avatar 6:41pm Mary Wing:

Hiya, rw, the weekend starts now!
  6:43pm Phillippe Bastille:

Mary, this show has been absolutely transcendent, luminescent, and every other -ent!
Avatar 6:44pm Mary Wing:

  6:45pm Phillippe Bastille:

Sure why not?
  6:46pm pencil:

  6:48pm Pierogi Doug:

A simply fantastic show, Mary. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Alex In Illinois:

Lene Lovich, B52s, and this Byrne Eno album, I frequently played in the early 80s
Avatar 6:49pm Mary Wing:

Thanks, Pierogi Doug--I can't believe there are only 2 tracks left! Where did the time go?
  6:50pm rw:

Definitely unguent. Always unguent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm fred:

@Mary: I'm even more thankful for this show given that I can't listen to the regular one these days
  6:51pm rw:

I had to look up unguent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Michael 98145:
