Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:21am Marley P. Dogg:

Anyone do anything fun this weekend?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am YETI BOB:

@D(iL): Similar - had a few friends over for an outdoor barbecue - lamb skewers with fresh eggplant & cherry tomatoes from the garden, which were really good. And then went out with my wife (who is a very good sport!) for a kayak trip on the Chicago river yesterday - still exploring and trying to find the best spots to launch a boat. Got caught in the rain, and had to paddle through an "aeration station" which was like really turbulent and wild rapids. Urban kayaking is an adventure!

@Marley - yes :)

well I avoided taking anything with aspartame in it. but I did weaked and had some soda with some good old-fashioned high fructose corn syrup.
  9:28am dano59:

I went tubing on Cayuga Lake and stuck around late into the evening playing guitars on the beach. Perfect summer night.
  9:29am David in London:

Yeti Bob, fresh garden veg is the best. I’m not quite as convinced by the aeration station passage though. Yikes. Still, it’s a good title for your next concept album....

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am The Oscar:

Oof, something about the lyrics to "Don't Make Me Over" just hits me like a ton of bricks every single time. So good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am YETI BOB:

Oh, it was terrifying and I'd rather not repeat the experience! We didn't know about it in advance. If I had looked it up I would have read: "The Devon aeration station presents a hazard. When operating, three blowers force air into injectors on both sides of the channel. Do not paddle in the aerated water. It reduces the buoyancy of both boats and people and the currents can result in conditions equal to Class 3 whitewater. Paddlers are advised to turn around and head back the way they came before reaching this station." But we (foolishly) did it anyway, and survived. I had to paddle with all my strength to fight the machines.
  9:33am dano59:

Excellent Bacharach one-two, joe i mean!
Avatar 9:34am TDK60:

Bloom, it's a Bacharach/David tune, first done by Dionne Warwick I think.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am YETI BOB:

"All Kinds of People Love Burt Bacharach" by Jim O'Rourke is a really fun album. Especially if you grew up with these songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

On TV Dionne said Bacharach gave a tune to someone else & got her upset & said 'don't make me over' cause that was the slang in her hood - & Bacharach riffed on it...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am sphere:

hullo. Pete sounds a bit like Richard Thompson on this one.
Avatar 10:07am Really Lisa:

Curious, what did the guys in the English Beat (The Beat) think of this rendition? Crowd sourcing here, instead of der Google.
Also, hello all.
  10:07am Rick A.:

I never understood the mania over Purple Rain in the summer of 1984. I know Prince is talented singer, songwriter, guitarist producer. However, the film is not really that interesting. I guess it has an intriguing look, dark palette. However, as he proved with Under the Cherry Moon, Prince is not a great actor. There is always Pennies from Heaven as a polarizing 80s musical.
Avatar 10:09am Joe McG:

@ReallyLisa: I wonder if anyone ever asked Dave Wakeling that question? I'd be curious myself/ @TDK60: I was amazed by how boring PT's book was considering how interesting he is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Mike Sin:

I should revisit this live Townshend LP. Back in the '80s, when I was smart as hell and knew it all, I could not stand the version of "Barefootin'"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am YETI BOB:

@ReallyLisa: There's a nice story on the Wikipedia article about the song. Basically, Pete Townshend called up Dave Wakeling to ask him how to play the song - it's in an unusual tuning
  10:09am Rick A.:

Really Lisa, I saw the English Beat a few years ago at the Highline Ballroom, partly at Joe's recommendation. Dave Wakeling talked up the Townshend version, saying how much he appreciated his version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am sphere:

I think Purple Rain was more an act of self-mythmaking than actual fiction, and since Prince obviously thought he was godlike, that vibe really blew people away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am YETI BOB:

quoting from Wikipedia:

"I got a phone call at 11 in the morning, and somebody gave me the phone and said, “It’s Pete Townshend for you.” And I said, “Of course it is, he phones about this time every Saturday doesn’t he?” [Laughs.] I thought it was somebody making a joke. I picked up very sarcastically, 'Oh, hello Pete.' And he said, 'Oh, hello Dave, this is Peter Townshend here and I’m sitting with David Gilmour, and we’re trying to work out your song 'Save It For Later,' but we can’t work out the tuning.' They presumed it was DADGAD as well, and couldn’t make it work, and so I had to explain that I’d made a mistake and it was not DADGAD, it was DADAAD. And he laughed and said, 'Oh, thank heavens for that! We've been breaking our fingers trying to get our hands around these chords.'"
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:10am Hughie Considine:

I saw the English Beat without Ranking Roger and just couldn't get into it. Obviously spoiled from having seen them in their prime.
Avatar 10:10am Joe McG:

@Rick A and Yeti Bob: Great info!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'ma be blunt: Prince is/was the most broadly Talented artist I can think of as both Musician & Performer... but I never felt I needed anything by him. I feel like MTV ruined him. He was caught up in his identity crises & I wish he'd just been an Artist & gone deep. ...So how arrogant is that ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Mike Sin:

re: Townshend's autobio
The only rock-star autobio a bit more boring than that one was Clapton's. What these guys think it very interesting about themselves varies widely from what I think makes them interesting.
Avatar 10:11am Really Lisa:

A wealth of knowledge here, thanks Rick A and Yeti Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am YETI BOB:

"I'm sitting here with David Gilmour".... love it!
  10:12am Rick A.:

Sphere, you have a point. It helped that Prince did not have much dialogue to reinforce the silent mystical prophet vibe. I didn't really buy it then and I don't buy it now though the guy is talented.
  10:12am Bill W:

The PENNIES FROM HEAVEN film is not bad, but I think it pales alongside the original BBC series with Bob Hoskins (if you don't mind super-bummers).

  10:16am The Butterman:

Iggy as Sam Elliot.
  10:16am Rick A.:

The Blues Brothers is probably my favorite 80s musical. I was only 14 and the film taught me who John Lee Hooker and Elmore James are among others. Given my love of Robert Altman's work, I really like Popeye, another polarizing musical. It has an awkward pace, sometimes too frenetic and other times borderline catatonic though Altman created perhaps the most authentically animated world with live action actors.
Avatar 10:16am Joe McG:

@waters7: Ha ha ha, you're welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am The Oscar:

Pauline Kael wrote that Prince is shot in Purple Rain the way Joseph von Sternberg shot Marlene Dietrich, which I think is probably the perfect key to why it's so popular/compelling.
  10:17am Rachel Bo Bachel:

@RevRab: "A Meeting By The River" is a really good Ry Cooder record (collab with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt), I listened to that one over and over back in the 90s.

For me, the best part of the Blues Brothers was the segment featuring John Lee Hooker. It felt so real, so much like a gig that he might have played back in the late 40s.

A Meeting by the River is one of many superb recordings engineered by Kavi Alexander, whose Water Lily Acoustics label famously uses Tim de Paravacini's tube gear. Kavi lives and works in Santa Barbara, hence the venue.

If we're doing movie recommendations, I nominate "Blue Ruin" . If you like tension-filled revenge movies (a la "Oldboy") you'll love this one.

Cooder's Jazz and Bop 'til You Drop are both great albums.
  10:36am U know better <3:

New rule : if you can't pronounce it, don't play it. There are too many resources available to us today to learn the proper translation of a word, name, person, place, or thing. It reads as privileged and can be seen as a disrespect to the artist, especially when being read by said white dude playing a song dug from the crates to the city of New York!
